Cerulean Bound (Imminent Danger #3) Update!

Okay, before everyone gets crazy excited, no, I have not finished the first draft. That remains a work in progress. But I figured you guys deserved an update after many months of silence, so here it is:

Cerulean Bound has officially crested the 70k words mark!

Now, what does this mean for the book itself?

I am about halfway through the story at this point, which means the book is on track to be about 140k words long. That, of course, would be the word count for the first draft. After extensive editing and chopping and revising, that number will hopefully be down in the 90-100k words range. So there’s still a while to go before the book is ready for eyes other than mine to see it.

On the upside, 70k words in and going strong! B&B season is gradually coming to a close, and NaNoWriMo starts in a few days, so I’m hoping to bang out the rest of the first draft by early December. Then the editing begins.

My very tentative hope is to get the book out next year. I don’t think it’s realistic to expect it in the spring — probably more like the fall — but miracles can always happen, right?

So there’s the update! Happy Halloween to everyone, and if you’re going to attempt NaNo this year, happy writing!

Covers Revealed!

Self-pubbed author Audrey Driscoll is releasing three new short stories — and check out the cover art! It was created by her using Canva, which looks like a really great tool that I will definitely be checking out.

Here are cover images for three short fiction pieces related to the Herbert West Series. I designed these images myself, using Canva, which has been dubbed “The easiest to use design program in the world.” Not having used any other such programs (unless you count Microsoft Paint), I can’t verify that, but I was able to produce what I consider usable images with Canva, after a short and not too steep learning curve.

Each image is followed by its book description, and then my comments on how I put it together, for what they’re worth. Keep in mind that these are simple images to accompany brief, simple stories, and I’m a total amateur when it comes to design.

Chasing Nonconformity by Michelle Proulx

Great new (and beautifully written!) review for Chasing Nonconformity

Davetopia

Chasing Nonconformity by Michelle ProulxBalancing an eye for the absurd with actual danger, Proulx creates a science-fiction tale that is light and fast without being shallow or cloying.

This novel is the second in the Imminent Danger series. Thus, ‘spoilers, darling’.

Still annoyed after the revelation that Varrin’s thoughtful gift was actually a marriage contract, Eris Miller wants a vacation more than ever. However, Varrin’s ship, the Nonconformity, is in the clutches of the annoyingly benevolent galactic government, and Varrin seems even more determined than his usual arrogant, entitled self to get it back. Meanwhile, on Rakor, Varrin’s father – the Emperor – dispatches two lethal killers and a bad poet to bring his son home, whether he wants to return or not.

This volume continues in the same vein as the first one: real peril mixed with farcical situations. Punk tribble-analogues face genetically superior warriors. Alien music turns out to be a…

Chasing Nonconformity is one of the 50 Self-Published Books to Read 2016!

Huge news, my friends! Chasing Nonconformity has been voted one of the 50 Self-Published Books to Read of 2016!

Granted, it’s #50 on the list. But it made the list! Wooooo!

Thank you so much to everyone who voted. I have no idea if this is an award that will get me more visibility or sales (none so far, lol, but I remain hopeful). But it’s still just really cool to know that someone liked my book enough to nominate it.

Check out the entire list here.

Since I’m in such a good mood, it’s time for a Cerulean Bound update! Writing proceeds at a glacial pace, as I have literally zero free time, and will continue to do so for the entire summer and well into the fall. That being said, I am able to eke out a few hours here and there, in which I get as much done on the book as I can. I’m just under halfway through the first draft, and will hopefully get that finished up in the next few months. So right now we’re looking at an early 2017 release date … although knowing me, that could easily push into mid-2017. Still, 2017! Mark your calendars!

Thanks for reading, and have an excellent week!

50 Self-Published Books Worth Reading — Chasing Nonconformity Nominated!

If you’ve been following my assorted social medias, you might have heard that some wonderful individual nominated my second book, Chasing Nonconformity, for the 50 Self-Published Books Worth Reading 2016 list!

Now, I have no idea if getting on this list actually means anything — more readers, more publicity, more sales, etc. But I’m in this race now, and darn it if I don’t want to win! Voting ends on July 1, so it’s time for a flood of last-minute ballots to swing my victory!

Therefore, if you have the chance, please pop over to this link and vote for Chasing Nonconformityhttp://www.readfree.ly/vote-50-self-published-books-worth-reading-2016-science-fiction/

Thank you in advance if you vote! I would offer to share the spoils of my success, but as previously mentioned, I’m not sure there are any spoils to actually be had. Nevertheless, onwards!

Q1) When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I had just finished Martin’s Song of Fire and Ice series, and I picked up Jim Lacey’s The First Clash and Herodotus’ Cyrus the Great and Rise of Persia, which describe the fatal battle on Marathon between Greece and Persia in the 5th century BC.

Marathon Bay is a 20’ drive from my home, and I’d often visited the tomb where the ancient Athenians buried their dead, so I thought at the time, “wouldn’t it be great if someone did what Martin did for medieval…
