A Writing Rule, I Think…

I believe I have stumbled upon one inviolate rule of writing, at least for me:

You should not try and attempt to read a new, powerful piece of fiction while writing fiction yourself.

You need your own voice to be imprinted upon your works. If you reside within the magic world of a powerful word mage simultaneously, echoes of their tone and point of view are bound to seep into your WIP, which might result in a very confused and confusing book.

So what I am doing is either reading non-fiction o...

Rising Above Resistance (The Writer Chronicles 3)

Rise Above And Fly By Radhika Mukherjee

Rise Above And Fly
(c) Radhika Mukherjee

The Writer is down with a headache. Lying in bed, curtains drawn, cold pack on head, she grimaces in pain and frustration.

It was going so well! A beginning had been made but then ‘Bop!’ went the world. She’d hit her head on the upper fridge door handle and now she had a headache, blurry eyes, stiff and sore neck and a generally painful spine.

What is this, she wondered, some sort of karmic retribution for reaching for her dreams? The darkness that come...

The Name of the Writing Muse (The Writer Chronicles 2)

The Wonderful Inchoate by Radhika Mukherjee

The Wonderful Inchoate
(c) Radhika Mukherjee

It was Day 2 of writing and the Writer felt as if it was history test day or a crucial cricket match between Team Writer and Team Muse.

But why do they still call it ‘Muse’ she wondered.

It is not this voice from outside, nor pure whimsical inspiration. It’s words and images and scents and thoughts and plot-lines and emotions and actors all bubbling up from the deep recesses of the mind.

It’s sometimes a movie you transcribe, a scene you paint or a...

The Writer Rebels : The Writer Chronicles (1)

Diving Into the Sea Of Words by Radhika Mukherjee

Diving Into the Sea Of Words
(c) Radhika Mukherjee

There was once a despairing Writer, who hadn’t written a word in years. She sat in her swivel chair, facing her desk and stared blankly at the blank screen in front of her.

One day, at four o’clock in the afternoon, on a Wednesday, after lunch, after chores, after two hours of sitting in mind-silence, the Writer let out a despairing sigh. It was a howl more than a sigh and it blew away the loose sheaves of copier paper she always kept by the...

Something Lovely

A few days ago, I received an e-mail from an author, Dr Vaidyanathan. It was an invitation to attend the release ceremony of his book that I had edited around a year ago. Since I don’t live in Mumbai anymore, I had to regretfully decline the invitation.

But then, something wonderful happened.

The author shared with me how he narrates the story of the book to friends and readers. And I share it here with you, with his permission:

“The book was conceived in 2009, because a friend told me to wri...

Battling Fear : A Writing Game

Ladies and gentlemen! We have THE FEAR!

Fear…

Fear…

Fear…

Fear has arrived and is trying to entrench itself in this contestant’s mind by blotting out all hope, all motivation – all the stories. Over the roar of fear, the soft hum of creativity fades and falters.

And it is a full soul-sucking fear. That proclaims the contestant’s utter worthlessness and current status as burden on the whole world.

Where did it come from?

What gives?

Who will win?

Will the contestant ever break free and reach f...

Time To Put Some Words In The Game

For the past few months, I’ve let life overtake me, rather than overtake life, the world, with my writing.

But today is my declaration day. Today, as in so many days before and so many days to come, I, Radhika Mukherjee, pledge allegiance anew to writing. To my art, my craft.

Let’s go into a little background:

On first November 2014, I started on a path that I then swerved violently away from.

In October 2014, without any prior preparation except wishful thinking and dreaming, without inculca...

Oh November!

I know it’s a bit late to sing your praises November, but what a month you were! It was under your watch that I started writing again. I had my seventh marriage anniversary and birthday, which I celebrated on a beach holiday.

Here I am on the gloriously warm beach:

On the professional front, I edited. I got two editing contracts, and biggest of all – I got a job offer in a managerial position!

On the other hand November, you did not let me focus on NaNoWrimo as much as I want...
