A Selection Of Soul Sketches And a Quest Story
I sketch to find the shapes hidden in my soul.
Without training, without the intervention of thought.
Just the pure instinct of pencil moving freely over paper.
And then emerge shapes that mystify, surprise and sometimes delight.
In the days that I have thirsted for my own artistry – my magical words,
These Soul Sketches are what have kept me going.
Pushed me to reclaim my words.
And for that, they are a most wonderful gift to me.

First comes a sketch that works two ways.
First as an Ali...

Saluting Cecil the Lion
This is for Cecil the Lion.
Just as this monkey roamed free from his cage, may Cecil’s spirit roam free and help stop the cowardly and cruel practice of big game hunting once and for all and bring about lasting change.
The wave of outrage worldwide has reminded us again that planet Earth is for man, animal and plant – equally.
We have to harness this energy. We have to all get serious about protecting, preserving and creating conditions so that all may flourish.
In this amazing earth, with o...

Sleepy Summer Song
Summer unlocks itself in mango intensity.
The social stream is not salvation,
On satin smooth afternoons of mellow sun.
My days hold a measure of bliss,
Looking at the sun, smiling in burning light—
Sunlight like lavender.
Red-orange haze under closed lids.
A play of light and shadow.
Serendipity is another name for the season.
The lazy, dazy season.
Season to let go and flow.
In somnolent silence.
Warm flow of long hair, lashed against window bright.
Shining strands touched with gold,
Gl...

A Delicate Balance
Our fates, delicate.
Strung on a single strand of spider web.
Like that child soaring with glee high up on a swing.
Next moment crying, hurt; in utter devastation.
With a ring of mourners.
Kids and caregiving grandparents trying to comfort her painful flightlessness.
But even if she knew of this moment in advance.
Shouldn’t she have been just as joyful on the upswing?
Shouldn’t we?

Stillness Awakened
I am beset by noise in my stillness today.
The whining, tortured cry of the children’s swing in the playground outside.
The water purifier’s song – an incessant twanging.
From a discussion of poetry online,
I turn to the quiet succor of images.
And in the upturned earth of my ploughed being,
Through the dynamic of a noise-making, noise-shredded still—
Come these words.

The Dimming Light of The Grey Sea
I fell down the rabbit hole of moribund-ness all of this and the last month. An unending sea of blankness, lost-ness, probably some depression. What I thought would be a blip, something that would last maybe a week, plunged me deep into the grey sea inside, where I nearly drowned…
I’m beginning to emerge from the miasma of blankness, embracing vulnerability, fallibility and my essential nature. And in the spirit of sharing all the highs and the lows of my creative journey, this is how it sta...

Through Anger and Pain (The Writer Chronicles 4)

Light And Colour in The Dark
(c) Radhika Mukherjee
Writing through anger and one’s deepest insecurities being activated is like trying to transport a lighted candle up a mountain through a hailstorm.
In the middle of a Zen-filled week of quietly working through obstacles and putting words on the page; reaching for the quiet joy of creating and learning to meditate – a huge fight erupted in the Writer household.
Suffice it to say, already a bit off-kilter under the effects of pain and pain medi...
