Book Thoughts
Title: Escape! The Story
of the Great HoudiniAuthor: Sid FleischmanYear Published: 2007 Audio BookshelfAudiobook - Available in Print Age Level: 8-12Summary (from back cover): Harry Houdini, born Ehrich Weiss, never did anything by half measure Once he decided to become a magician, he became the King of Cards, the Prince of Air, the Genius of Escape and Prof. H. Houdini. And why not? He could walk through walls, defeat any lock, make elephants disappear with the snap of his fingers an dpick up needles with his eyelids! Or could he...?
Our ThoughtsWith a long car ride to contend with this past weekend, we (Neighbor Girl & Cool Mom) decided to make a run to the library to see what audio books were available.
Wow. Truly, we enjoyed this audio book from start to finish.
Mr. Fleishman spell-binds the listener/reader with a detailed biography on the performer extraordinaire even without revealing tremendous secrets. Harry Houdini was a showman with an incredible work-ethic and the ability to make the most of his experiences. Neighbor Girl and I decided he was a genius in marketing.
Houdini was an avid reader and traveled with a bookcase wherever he went. We adored that the story of how he gave Buster Keaton his name was in the book. We know this story from Matt Phelan's book, Bluffton,
If someone wanted to study Vaudeville, and the beginning of movies...this book along with Bluffton would be a great starter combination.
The reader of the audio book, Taylor Mali, is easy to listen to, and Mr. Fleishman reads the preface and the conclusion of the book with a passion that draws the listener into the story. His personal connection with Houdini's widow, when he was a young teenager; and his love and understanding of magic, brings a charm to the biography that might not otherwise exist.
I would write more about this book, but I'm off to find some Houdini videos.

Co-Hosting the Kid Lit Blog Hop, A New Kitty, and A Book Review

Thanks for stopping by, human friends.

We are thrilled to be co-hosts of the 46th Kid Lit Blog Hop, this week, in celebration of our latest book release as well as our upcoming Book Tour. The Kid Lit Blog Hop exists to develop a dynamic and engaged community of children's book bloggers, authors, publishers, and publicists. Please join in by adding in a post (or two) and hopping around to meet some of your fellow Kid Lit bloggers and authors. We have a couple of things to share before we get to the Blog Hop though.
A New Addition to Neighbor Girl's Family We want to take a moment to introduce you to Lego. Lego stole the hearts of Neighbor Girl and Cool Mom on a recent trip to the local shelter. It took some time to sell Cool Dad on the idea of a cat, but in the end they were successful and have added Lego to their family. Neighbor Girl plans to have him be a regular part of Wordless Wednesdays. I guess it is okay. He is a nice cat.  Although, a bit too nice for me, he needs to assert his dominance a bit more, if you ask me. Stanley says I'm too hard on the cat. Hmmph! Oh well, having cats outnumber dogs on this blog can't be a bad thing.

Lego walks a bit funny because he is missing a leg. It made me feel bad for him until I saw him run for his food - I think he runs faster than I do. Stanley agrees.
A Book Review Title: Come Back Dear SunAuthor: Geena BeanIllustrator: Cheri WebberPublisher: IndependentPublication Year: 2012Pages: 36Recommended Age: 3+Cool Mom's Review:I recently won a copy of Come Back Dear Sun from SeeMomClick.com, and it was fortuitous that I found myself reading the book while I was sitting on the beach: with no phone and no computer. Even though it was an overcast day, the two young ladies who joined me on the two-hour drive to the beach were happy to be together enjoying the waves, the sand, and each other's company.

This book is a cute story of the underappreciated sun. The sun has had enough of being ignored and heads for a new solar system in search of one where the population will spend time outdoors.
Kaylee, our main character, decides she wants the sun back. She reaches out to the moon who fills the role of messenger in the story. While the moon sets out to retrieve the sun, Kaylee and friends tell everyone to get outside.
The book is written in rhyme and flows well. I only tripped up a couple of times where I felt the need to repeat the line to make the rhyme and flow fit well. The pictures are bold and colorful with text placed well and easy to read, despite many dark illustrations.
Overall, it is a cute book with a strong message to spend more time outside.
Learn more about the author, Geena Bean, by visiting her website: www.GeenaBean.comHappy Hopping everyone and enjoy the Hop!Yes, now it is time to hop. Please join in or simply hop around and visit other members of the Kid Lit community. Have a paw-riffic time and be sure to say "hello" as you visit our virtual homes. Kid Lit Blog Hop

Book Review & $100 Book Blast for Lobo Goes to the Galapagos Hosted by Mother Daughter Book Reviews (Ends 10/23/2014)

Lobo Goes to the Galapagos by C. L. Murphy
About the BookTitle: Lobo Goes to the Galapagos (The Adventures of Lovable Lobo) | Author: C.L. Murphy | Publication Date: August 27, 2014 | Publisher: Peanut Butter Prose | Pages:32 | Recommended Ages: 3 to 7Summary: Lobo returns in this adventure, sweeter and a bit salty this time. This lil' wolf pup finds that there's nothing like a little sea air to bring out the best in him and his unlikely tag-alongs. Take a trip to the Galapagos with Lobo and his right-hand raven, Roxy, as they help an injured, new feathered friend return home. Lobo faces some fears and witnesses the joy that comes from helping others in this "birds of a different feather DO flock together" tale.   Our Video Book Review Book Preview   PurchaseAmazon | iTunesThe Buzz"Who knew geography and learning about animals could be this much fun? Lobo Goes to the Galapagos is my new favorite children's book and is highly recommended. " ~ Jack Magnus, Readers' Favorite
"While Ms, Murphy's uniquely whimsical and vibrant illustrative style is perfectly suited for the wild, tropical feel of this colorful book, and easily captures young readers' attention, there is also a subtle, quiet beauty to the storyline's overarching themes of friendship, trust, perseverance, and goodwill. Lobo's tenacious and giving spirit are delightfully captured in this fifth installment of puppy-fueled fun. In fact, it's sincerely so easy to fall in love with "Lovable" Lobo that I'd happily follow this well-meaning, big-hearted, wolf pup to the very ends of the earth!" ~ 5 Star Review, Indie Author Girl, Amazon
"What an adorable story! I read this to my nephew and he couldn't stop giggling at the silliness of Roxy as well as Lobo's cute friends Bobby, Sunny, Coconut and Sandra. The author was very clever in portraying a tale of friendship, adventure and excitement that is sure to enthuse young minds around the world." ~ 5 Star Review, Gina D., Amazon
About the Author: C.L. Murphy C.L.Murphy
While new to the children’s book writing and illustrating scene, C.L. Murphy (Cathy) has been doodling her way through life since she won a school wide poster contest in the third grade. She’s had the pleasure of working as an artist in residence, creating cartoons and painting murals with the children at local elementary schools. She adores the wonder and curiosity of young children. She feels that creating picture books is something that she was destined to do, after years of filing away so many ideas, while raising her two sons. She is a member of SCBWI. She lives amongst the wildlife in an enchanted forest in the beautiful Oregon wilderness with her husband and menagerie. She has always appreciated nature and animals have always played a major role in her life. The inspiration for the Lovable Lobo character came from a wolf that she raised for over 14 years. Check out her book series and discover that you, too, will find Lobo lovable.
