Tour Stop – BEFORE YOU BREAK

BYB Banner

Hey guys! Today is my day on the BEFORE YOU BREAK blog tour.

I have been quite vocal in my love for Christina Lee’s second book in her Between Breaths series. I was honored to receive an ARC and fell in love with Quinn and Ella. I said this in my blurb for the book: “The emotional, sexy BEFORE YOU BREAK proves Christina Lee has done the unthinkable and made me love Quinn as much as Bennett.” (Bennett is from her first book in the series – ALL OF YOU)

BEFORE YOU BREAK released in ebook on February 18 and will be available in paperback on October 14.

In the book, Ella works for a suicide hotline, which Quinn calls into. I thought those scenes were very realistic and I wanted to hear about the author’s experience with this. She took the time to answer with the following:

I worked in the mental health field for over ten years as a clinical social worker. The ins and outs of crisis intervention and therapy had become instinctual to me—as well as the signs and symptoms of people at their breaking point or sadly, already disintegrating.

I’d also discovered just how resilient people can be. The human spirit is amazing. And we all have the need for human interaction—someone to bare our souls to, and somewhere to belong.

I still keep in contact with many people in the field, so when I initially got the idea for this book, I knew just the person I needed to consult. She has been in crisis intervention for practically her entire career and still works a hotline a few days a week.

She was more than happy to help with some of the finer details I may have forgotten or that had changed over the years, and I hope I did the topic justice.

Thanks for having me, Megan.

Thanks, Christina!

BYBAbout BEFORE YOU BREAK

A sexy, emotional New Adult romance about a bad boy on the edge and a good girl about to lose control…

A college baseball star isn’t supposed to have skeletons in his closet. But Daniel Quinn is hiding a guilty past so dark he refuses to let anyone get close. Except there’s something about gorgeous, studious Ella Abrams that goes beyond the electric attraction between them–something that makes him want to open up.

Ella has suffered enough heartache and guilt to fill one of her psychology textbooks, but she keeps that part of herself hidden behind a bubbly exterior. Until she receives an anonymous call while working a suicide helpline and the voice on the other end touches something inside of her that she can’t ignore.

Soon Ella and Quinn’s physical connection heats up, even as their deep and revealing hotline talks intensify. But by the time Ella realizes that her seductive jock and her sensitive caller are the same guy, it might be too late to save him–or to stop herself from falling too far…

An excerpt of BEFORE YOU BREAK

At the theater, we bought popcorn, Milk Duds, and large sodas. After we settled in our seats in the crowded room, I opened the box of chocolate caramel confections and dumped them in the large tub.

“Um,” Quinn said, scratching his chin.

“Sweet and salty—it’s a must-have for movie watching.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes, seriously.” I picked up a Milk Dud, flanked it with two pieces of popcorn, and then brought it to his lips. “Here. I guarantee you’ll fall in love. You’ll never watch a movie without them again.”

“If you say so. . . .” He dragged the sweet and salty mixture into his mouth but kept my fingers enclosed between his lips.

I held in a gasp while he ran his tongue over my thumb and then sucked on my forefinger before releasing my hand and chewing what remained.

“Agree,” he said around a mouthful of popcorn. “Wouldn’t want to be without them ever again.”

Quinn’s gaze latched on to mine. It felt like a bundle of feathers had been let loose in my stomach. “Guess you’ll have to come to every movie from now on. So I don’t forget.”

Speechless wasn’t even the word for what I felt in that moment. Dumbfounded might have been more like it, or maybe just struck stupid, because I couldn’t even move my lips to form any coherent words.

When the movie previews began, he turned toward the screen and reached for my fingers, interlacing our hands. Then he leaned close to my ear and said, “I expect you to feed me just like that the entire movie.”

This is what I live with

My husband. Oh, my husband. I do love him so. And he makes me laugh to the point of tears ALL THE TIME. It’s the best weight-loss regimen ever.

Anyway, I was researching self defense techniques for book 2 in my series, *hint hint* and this is the conversation I had with my husband.

Me: Hey, did you know that if a man grabs you from behind, you’re supposed to reach back and grab his junk?

Husband: But what if he’s a eunuch?

Me: …

Husband: Like, what if your attacker is Lord Varys?

Me: …

Apparently we watch too much Game of Thrones…

And just because. You know. It’s Jon Snow.

GUEST POST: SJ Pajonas

Nogiku banner

This is my stop during the blog tour for the Nogiku series by SJ Pajonas. This blog tour is organized by Lola’s Blog Tours. The blog tour runs from January 20 till February 2, you can view the complete tour schedule on the website of Lola’s Blog Tours.

So far this series contains two book: Removed (Nogiku series #1) and Released (Nogiku series #2).

For my part of the tour, I asked author S.J. Pajonas to talk about Japanese food, and she chose to focus on izakayas, which are equal to pubs in Japan.

When the work day is over, and it’s time to take a load off, grab a beer and get a bite to eat, the English have their pubs, and the Japanese have izakayas. Izakayas are a staple business in Japan. Every town has at least one, and Tokyo has thousands of them. Usually small and dark, out-of-the-way, tucked into a side alley or even in the back corner of a metro station, izakayas seat a small clientele every night. Their owners are sometimes the only staff, catering to a seated bar of maybe 8 to 10 customers. The larger izakayas will hold a few dozen people, but they are few and far between in Tokyo where there are over 160,000 restaurants.

I’m not going to lie to you, one of my life goals is to live in Tokyo and have the perfect neighborhood izakaya right downstairs where the owner knows my name, and I can get preferred seating. What a dream! That’s probably why for REMOVED and RELEASED, I made Sanaa’s best friend, Miko, the heiress of a well-known izakaya. I wanted a place where Sanaa could gather with her friends and family, a neutral spot that would be theirs until it was time to pick up and leave. A family-owned izakaya was my best idea, and Izakaya Tanaka was born of my many nights dreaming in bed of my own such place.

So, today I got an email from my editor. We’ve been batting ideas back and forth for titles for my New Adult romance coming out June 3.

When I got her email, it was like the heavens opened up and the sun poured down because I loved her title THAT MUCH.

You ready?

Eeeeek! I freaking love it. It fits my book perfectly and well… tons of fun title possibilities for the next two books in the series.

So, that’s all I got for now. Edits are ongoing. But we are ONE STEP closer to getting my book, MAKE IT COUNT, out there! Woot!

Cover reveal – FINE ART OF PRETENDING

I’m SO excited to host a cover reveal for Rachel Harris’s young adult romance THE FINE ART OF PRETENDING. I’m friends with Rachel and hands down, she’s one of the nicest people I have met in this industry. And I’ve met a lot of nice people, so that’s saying something!

This book looks flirty and fun and I can’t wait to read it when it releases September 30, 2014.

So, here it is!

FineArtofPretending_RachelHarris_FINALCOVER_front (2)

Cute, right?

And here’s the blurb:

According to the guys at Fairfield Academy, there are two types of girls: the kind you hook up with, and the kind you’re friends with. Seventeen-year-old Alyssa Reed is the second type. And she hates it. With just one year left to change her rank, she devises a plan to become the first type by homecoming, and she sets her sights on the perfect date—Justin Carter, Fairfield Academy’s biggest hottie and most notorious player.

With 57 days until the dance, Aly launches Operation Sex Appeal and sheds her tomboy image. The only thing left is for Justin actually to notice her. Enter best friend Brandon Taylor, the school’s second biggest hottie, and now Aly’s pretend boyfriend. With his help, elevating from “funny friend” to “tempting vixen” is only a matter of time.

But when everything goes according to plan, the inevitable “break up” leaves their friendship in shambles, and Aly and Brandon with feelings they can’t explain. And the fake couple discovers pretending can sometimes cost you the one thing you never expected to want.

THE FINE ART OF PRETENDING is out September 30, 2014, from Spencer Hill Press.

So You Think You Can Query

So, I’m a mentor in this cool writing contest called Sun Vs. Snow, organized by the awesome author team of Amy Trueblood and Michelle Hauck. Basically, writers submitted a query, the first 250 words of the manuscript, and then a short description of whether their main character preferred sun over snow.

It’s a cool contest and my job, along with many other awesome mentors, was to critique these queries.

It was fun. I really enjoyed it. But I noticed some common problems I’d like to address. Ready? Here we go:

QUERY

1. Simplify. Simplify. Simplify. I don’t need to know your five little B-plots or subplots. I need the bones. Your query really should answer these three questions – What does your protagonist want? How does he/she/it get it? What is standing in his/her/its way?

2. Those questions lead me into my next issue: If you can’t answer those questions, take a good look at your plot. Is your character passive? Is everything happening TO him/her/it? I’m not saying you can’t have a passive character, but it’s not ideal and something you should me aware of.

Your character should want something. I know you might say, “But Megan, sometimes things just happen to people.” Yes, I get that. I’m aware. But this is a BOOK. This is fiction. Make that character active because the reader wants to ROOT for something along with the character. Make me CARE that your main character wants to get into college, or solve a murder or survive a zombie apocalypse. Google “passive characters” and there are tons of tips on how to fix that.

2. I don’t want to know about what your character WAS or HAD BEEN DOING. I want to know what the book is about – the plot. Sure, you’ll need to include some background on your character to make the plot relevant, but focus on the catalyst that sets the story in motion. THAT’S the hook.

FIRST 250 WORDS

1.  Hands down, the biggest problem I noticed was too much telling. Too much exposition. Don’t shove background information down my throat in the first 250 words. SHOW ME instead. Shove me right into the action and through that action, give me your characters thoughts on another character, or a place, or whatever you are trying to convey. Your character is smart? SHOW ME how he grins triumphantly at that red A on his test. Your character isn’t smart? SHOW ME as he glares at that red D, then crumples it in a fist and tosses it into the trashcan as he trudges from the classroom. ACTION ACTION ACTION.

2. Introductory sentences: What was it with you guys and these things? Haha. This was so common in the entries and is really not necessary. Let me make up an example:

Alexandria really hated dragons, until the day she met one.

The day started like any other. Alexandria slipped into her red gown and flounced from her dressing room.

Okay, so that was totally simplistic, but you get the point. Why start with that sentence? Don’t set me up like that. Show me in her dressing room as she flounces outside in the warm sun as she takes a walk to her favorite lake. Then she stumbles on what she thinks is a root and Oh look! It’s a dragons’s tail! Eeek! She covers her mouth with a dainty hand!… Yadda yadda.

See what I mean? No introductory sentence needed.

Now, let me end this post with disclaimer: There are exceptions to all of these points. I actually told one contestant to keep her introductory sentence because I liked it so much. So basically, with all these points, sure you can deviate. But have a good reason WHY. You have to know the rules to break them, know what I mean?

So, you might disagree with me, and that’s okay! I just want these things to be something you keep in the back of your mind.

And honestly, the talent in Sun Vs. Snow was fabulous. I had a blast and I’m rooting for all of you!

Go Team Sun! :)

Interview with Stina Lindenblatt – plus a GIVEAWAY!

I’m really excited to host author Stina Lindenblatt on my blog today to talk about her debut New Adult romance, TELL ME WHEN, out now from Carina Press.

Stina and I share the same agent, but we became friends before I ever signed with Marisa Corvisiero. I love Stina because she’s smart, honest, loyal and a talented writer. I’m super happy for her because she had a fantastic release day on Monday.

In author-speak, release day is our “book birthday” so I asked Stina some questions about her very first book birthday.

How did you sleep the night before release day?

Because I wake up at 5 a.m every morning, I easily fall asleep at night as soon as I close my eyes. So the night before my release day I had no trouble falling asleep. Unfortunately I woke up at 3 a.m, like a kid waiting for Santa.

Tell us what your release day was like. What did you do?

Like I mentioned above, I woke up at 3 a.m, but I didn’t rush out of bed. I tried to go back to sleep and gave up after an hour. So I read until 5 a.m. Except I was reading the NA book ALL I EVER WANTED by Rhonda Helms, Lexi Ryan, Marilyn Brant, and Caisey Quinn and didn’t want to stop reading. I figured nothing was really going on yet for my release date, so I kept reading. And reading. And reading.

An hour later I decided to check out my Twitter interaction feed. I spent the next eight hours (minus 2 hours for lunch with my hubby) going through all the tweets. Between my blog tour, release day blitz, giveaways, the wonderful efforts of author Rachel Harris’s street team, and all my amazing friends (including some equally amazing bestselling authors), my Twitter feed exploded. Yeah, maybe staying in bed for so long to read wasn’t such a great idea.

Advice to other writers on their release day?

Make sure your release day is free of appointments (other than maybe lunch with a loved one). Don’t expect to write…other than comments on Twitter and Facebook. That’s all you’ll have time for. If you’re the kind of person who freaks out at reviews, don’t read them.

The most import advice I can give is ENJOY YOUR RELEASE DAY. You’ve earned it!

What do you want people to feel after they finish TELL ME WHEN?

Hope. Okay, and maybe I want them to feel a little freaked out over what happened to Amber when she was in high school. Then people will hopefully take the necessary pre-cautions to keep it from happening to them. It was part of my reasons for writing TELL ME WHEN.

Thanks for having me, Megan. I can’t wait for your release day so you can experience the excitement I did with mine.

See? Isn’t she sweet? Now, here are the deets on TELL ME WHEN.

Tell-Me-When-cover

Amber Scott should be enjoying life as a college freshman. She should be pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian. She should be working hard to make sense of her precalculus math class.

She shouldn’t be waking up her college roommate with screaming nightmares. She shouldn’t be flashing back, reliving the three weeks of hell she barely survived last year. And she definitely shouldn’t be spending time with sexy player Marcus Reid.

But engineering student Marcus is the only one keeping Amber from failing her math course, so she grudgingly lets him into her life. She never expects the king of hookups will share his painful past. Or that she’ll tell him her secrets in return, opening up and trusting him in a way she thought she’d never be able to again.

When their fragile future together is threatened by a stalker Amber thought was locked away for good, Marcus is determined to protect her–and Amber is determined to protect Marcus…even if that means pushing him away.

AND, I’m giving away a copy of TELL ME WHEN, five bookmarks supplied by Stina, and because she loved ALL I EVER WANTED (a New Adult romance anthology), I’m giving away a bonus copy of that too!

Excerpt: Cora Carmack’s SEEKING HER

I’m really excited to be participating in the excerpt blast blog tour for Cora Carmack’s SEEKING HER, a prequel to FINDING IT.

I love Cora’s books and am so excited to be on the William Morrow team with her!

Here is a blurb for SEEKING HER:

Jackson Hunt gets his turn in this Finding It prequel novella …

Jackson Hunt hasn’t been out of the military for long, but he needs to get a job and find a sense of normalcy if he is going to keep his demons at bay. The job that falls into his lap, though, is anything but normal.

Becoming bodyguard (and babysitter) to spoiled rich girl Kelsey Summers isn’t exactly what he had in mind, but it’s a chance to travel, to get away. The catch: Kelsey’s father doesn’t want her to know she’s being followed.

She’s vibrant and infuriating, exciting and reckless, mysterious and familiar. When Jackson sees her falling into the same patterns he suffered years ago, he decides it’s time to stop watching and help her instead. But getting to know Kelsey is more difficult than he thought, especially because the more he knows her, the more he wants her.

Best SEEKING HER by Cora Carmack

How it happened

Now this is the story all about how

My life got turned flipped, turned upside down…

Yep, that’s how I feel. Like my life has been completely flipped, and I’m in some alternate universe in some sci-fi movie that I don’t understand because it’s above my head like The Matrix Revolutions.

But, my critique partners assure me I’m still in this universe, and this is just my life. I’m not convinced, but I’m going to go with it for now because it’s kind of cool here.

The story behind how I was offered a three-book deal with William Morrow Impulse/Harper Collins is a little long. (Aren’t these stories always long?) I can’t give every detail but I’ll share what I can.

I started DO THE MATH in the beginning of January 2013. I had the idea of this girl, sitting in her college library, zoning out as her tutor rambled on. Said tutor dumped her and the next tutor assigned to her happened to be her boyfriend’s roommate — a sexy nerd with a pompadour who saw her the way no one else really did. And then things got complicated.

And so Kat and Alec were born. They weaseled their way into my heart and soul, but were placed on the back burner when I had the audacity (in Kat’s words) to have a baby. I took six weeks off to care for my little one and then got back in the saddle to finish DO THE MATH.

I participated in Write On Con as I was finishing up my manuscript (then titled SWITCHING NUMBERS). I received a lot of positive comments from other writers on my query and first five pages. I met my amazing critique partners. After a major, CP-suggested rewrite, I entered the query trenches with a smile and optimism.

Fast forward past several Twitter pitch contests to October. Some really cool things happened. I was offered a publishing contract for DTM and I was elated (really, this was a wonderful pub and a wonderful editor and I was honored). I had a couple outstanding queries, so I sent updates about the offer. Marisa Corvisiero of Corvisiero Literary Agency responded. She hadn’t been able to get to my query/pages in her queue. She said she’d take a look to see if she could help me out.

The next day, I had an email in my inbox from Marisa. And it was amazing. Beautiful. I read it with tears in my eyes because she saw in my story what I saw. She said it was relatable and authentic and clever and that she couldn’t put it down. And I’m going to quote this one line from her email because that’s what sent me over the edge into Ugly Oprah Cry – “So I’m 1% critic and 99% fan. That makes me 100% sure that I would love to represent this book and work with you to grow your career.”

::FAINTS::

I spoke to her on the phone and knew pretty much right away she was for me. Her enthusiasm was off the charts and she loved my ideas for the series and future WIPs. I held off saying yes until I spoke to another interested agent. That agent was super lovely as well, but Marisa and I just clicked.

So I accepted her offer — with relish (I’m channeling Rizzo) — the next day. :)

More stuff happened. Some edits. And then one day in December, I sat in Starbucks getting some writing done with the intention of doing some shopping later. And email pinged into my  inbox from Marisa – “Can you call me to chat?”

I called her. I heard three-book print offer with Harper Collins and editor Amanda Bergeron, and I think my brain shut down. I left my laptop open and unguarded (don’t tell my husband) on the table along with my wallet and walked outside in 30 degree weather with no coat to hear her better. My mind raced and my heart beat out of my chest as she told me things I never thought I’d hear in my life (even though I so wanted to hear them).

It wasn’t until I walked back inside 15 minutes later that I realized I couldn’t feel my hands. Or my nose. And I was shaking. But my heart was full and beating hot because I WAS GOING TO BE PUBLISHED.

We accepted the offer sometime later, and I spoke to Amanda on the phone. She was gracious. And lovely. And excited to work with me. WITH ME. HOW IS THAT MY LIFE EVEN? And she sent me a box of books with a note on her stationary I plan to frame. I might even dip the box in silver like some people used to do with baby shoes (does anyone still do that?).

Then I spent my weekend reading Cora Carmack’s books and unable to believe I had anything in common with the person who brought me sweet Cade “Golden Boy” Winston.

So. This is my life. Somehow. A dream come true. And now I’m going to channel Khal Drogo and tell you I’ll kill the man who wakes me.

I can’t wait for you all to meet Kat and Alec and Max and the rest of the gang.

So many people supported me in this journey. My family and friends were there every step of the way, especially my husband. Every hero I write has qualities of my husband because he’s that amazing. And the story of how we met is an NA book waiting to happen.

I hesitate to even throw out names because so many people were so supportive of me (and continue to be). But as far as other writers? Natalie Blitt and Amy Pine who I met through WOC. As well as Jen Meils, Lucas Hargis and Stina Lindenblatt (who gave me that final shove I needed to submit to that first interested publisher). There were others as well and every one of you played a part in this journey.

So, next is Kat and Alec, and then two more books and I hope you don’t get sick of me because I got tons of other characters begging to be heard. :)

Thanks for reading and for the support. It means the world.

Feel free to follow me on Twitter and Facebook, over there in the sidebar —->

Cover reveal – ALL I EVER WANTED

I’m so pleased to be a part of the cover reveal for ALL I EVER WANTED, a contemporary new adult anthology to be released January 13.

The authors involved are Lexi Ryan, Rhonda Helms, Marilyn Brant and Caisey Quinn.

I’m excited about this anthology because all the stories are interconnected. That takes a lot of work and creativity so I have to hand it to these authors!

Here’s the synopsis:

Winterfest is heating up in Abbott Springs…

As the town’s yearly festival kicks off, cold days turn into steamy nights, new flames will be ignited, and old romances will be rekindled.

All About Us by Marilyn Brant—All Sami Abbott ever wanted was permission to be herself. At home, she aims to be the perfect daughter but never measures up. At college, she’s the bold girl who had a one-night stand with sexy musician, Alex Hamilton. When he arrives unexpectedly in Abbott Springs, her worlds collide and she must reconcile the girl she tries to be with the person she really is.

All I Need by Caisey Quinn–All pink-haired rocker chick Everly Abbott thought she wanted was acceptance in her straight-laced hometown. But her best friend and bandmate Justin Cohen is about to show her that what she thinks she wants isn’t necessarily what she needs.

All for Love by Rhonda Helms–All Maya Monterey ever wanted was to belong. Happiest with the Abbott family, Maya’s been secretly in love with sexy pastry chef Oliver Abbott for years. With a flirty new look, she’ll pull out all the stops to get him to notice her. And if her plan fails, she’ll walk away from the only home she’s ever known–and Oliver–for good.

All or Nothing by Lexi Ryan—After years of placing the wrong bets, all Aubree Baxter wanted was someone to take a chance on her. Golden boy Kennedy Hale plays it safe in life and love, but to keep Bree in Abbott Springs, he’ll have to go all in.

And here’s the cover!
