OMG OMG.
On Saturday, I was...

OMG OMG.
On Saturday, I was approached to write a polyamorous web comic, and this is the first character concept sketch to come out of it.
After shooting some text messages back and forth last night so we knew we were at least relatively on the same page about the themes we wanted to pursue, I put together a three page document outlining five characters, some general themes and settings, and then some test dialogue.
Within two hours, I had this image in my inbox.
This is exciting for a few reasons, but none of them as much as I seem to be working with someone now who churns out work as quickly as I do!!
So. Please meet our first character: Brian is an asexual siren who uses his magnetism to be a sounding board for the rest of the group, rather than sex. The artist has shown his Greek heritage in the small bump in the nose. In the colour version, we’ll also see some dark roots with bleach blonde hair. With the clothing, we were going for comfy but also dapper clothing as part of his aesthetic and how he puts people at ease. He is part of a poly triad and together they own and run a bookshop in Melbourne’s CBD.
Well. This is going to be awesome.

Now with added colour! Artwork done by Yana Lehey.
The Car Accident
So, uh, I was just in my first car accident. Someone ran into me in a T intersection. The other driver was really nice about it, getting out of the car and giving me a hug and offering to write down her details when my hand was too shaky to do it myself. I’m okay, the car’s still drivable and I’ve showered and washed the smell of fear and shaky-sweat off.
Soon as I got home, I called or texted my partners to let them know what had happened, and within minutes I was surrounded by this polycule of support that made me feel heard and loved and able to get on with some of my creative projects again.
This is just another PSA in why I am in it for the poly fam.
This is also a caution against T intersections. Apparently they are full of danger.

"Boy: So is there anything I can do to help you out today?
Me: Oh, yeah, there is one thing, if it..."
Me: Oh, yeah, there is one thing, if it wouldn’t be too much trouble. Would you mind making today go a bit slower so I can get all the writing, editing and poly comic outline stuff done today?
Boy: Oh sure, I’ll just reach up and pull the sun back under the horizon…
Me: Oh no, no need to go that far. Just maybe 8am?
Boy: My love? Oh, no, she doesn’t ask too much of me at all.”

January Write Up
This year started with a BANG.
And, by BANG, I mean: me being unconscious from around 10:45pm on New Years’ Eve for the first New Years’ we weren’t hosting in 3 years. It was bliss. The sleeping doubly so. :)
New Years’ day dawned with the usual crew of hanger-on-ers who stayed the night at our host’s place and one overly sociable bird. By the end of the day, I was literally across town and at the beginning of a 10 hour conversation that has flavoured the rest of the month in a quite positive way.
I have a dear… lady-friend with whom I’m allowed to hold hands while walking down the street even though it’s near where she lives.
This month, I have edited two pieces of writing and sent them both off; one a collection call and the other an already accepted piece. As well, I have the beginnings of a new novel in the works.
Complimenting that, I’ve been working near full time hours at work as we get ready to open our IVF theatre at the end of February. SO exciting. I can’t wait to help make such a difference in the lives of so many families.
And as if that all isn’t enough, I’ve so far read 15 books this year, (some of which I’ve posted about here:
F2M (transition)Not Otherwise Specified (bisexual/anorexia)
What We Left Behind (lesbian/non-binary)
But most are on my Goodreads account). This is an astronomical number, and I don’t even know what to do with that.
On the music front, I’ve been listening to the Ghost Musical on repeat and wondering if there’s anyone that I can con into going to see it with me….
This month also brought me a satisfactory label for a gender identity to fit what I’ve been using my words for for years; words that had, more and more, not quite been cutting it of late. I described it to a friend as being aware that there was this whole within your identity that just wasn’t being encompassed by any of the other labels flying around.
It’s nothing more than that, really. The hole is no longer a hole. Joyous!
Finally, January was rounded up by our first ever Australia Day Poly FauxBQ that seems to have reverberated out into amazing or interesting outcomes and epiphanies for almost everyone who was there.

poly people are just as loyal as monogamous people pass it on

She kept having dreams of being underwater. Not, like,...

She kept having dreams of being underwater. Not, like, underwater in the ocean, or the swimming pool. No, this was not like underwater in her grandmothers living room, and she’d forgotten to take off her tutu from the ballet recital she’d been to beforehand.
“Why do you think I dream that?”
Zoe scooped another fry through the tomato sauce, looked up, and shrugged unhelpfully.

saints and homos preserve me i have made a grave error in asking my facebook friends for book recommendations
it’s becoming a carnival of all the most awkward white writer suggestions possible and i may be seriously rethinking my opinion on many, many people
This is why I spend hours compiling queer reading lists.
That’s right, I haven’t just spent the last three hours procrastinating on Tumblr.
Today's revelation:
If I were monogamous, I’d be even less smooth than I am now, because I’d have to gain dating experience by dating only one person at a time.

Can anyone give me queer...
Can anyone give me queer fantasy book recs?
Yes! Some of my faves:
Huntress and Ash by Malinda Lo are both great (Ash is a f/f retelling of Cinderella, Huntress is a prequel set in the same world)
Otherbound by Corinne Duyvis (bi girl mc, high fantasty/sci-fi mix)
Clariel by Garth Nix (acearo character)
Pantomime and Shadowplay by Laura Lam (nonbinary, bi/pan, intersex mc)
Also, if you’re into Urban Fantasy, I’d recommend The Lynburn Legacy by Sarah Rees Brennan, which has side bi and lesbian characters
I also didn’t love Carry On because I found it to be bi-erasurey, but YMMV! It was a cute story. :)
Hope this helps, and that you find something you enjoy!
I hope everyone looking for queer fantasy YA has Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst on their TBRs! Shira Glassman has some f/f fantasy as well (NA).
I’m trying so hard not to repeat anything!
Also the Emelan series by Tamora Pierce (queer supporting characters and as one of the main characters gets older she identifies as a lesbian/excellent feminist medieval fantasy series).
Holly Black always has queer supporting characters in her books, particularly in the Modern Faerie series (gay), The Darkest Part of the Forest (gay, bi) and the Coldest Girl in Coldtown (trans, bi). (All urban fantasy/faeriepunk)
The Bane Chronicles (and related books) have fantastic gay, lesbian and bisexual main and supporting characters. (Urban fantasy)
Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle has a main gay character and a hopefully bi main character (in love fingers crossed!) (Urban fantasy???)
That’s what I can think of off the top of my head!
Edit: wait, wait…
Kristin Cashore’s Graceling/Fire/Bitterblue (bi protagonist in Fire, gay/bi/lesbian supporting characters)
Tamora Pierce’s Provost’s Dog trilogy (feminist fantasy, gay and trans supporting characters)
Ellen Kushner’s Swordspoint, Privilege of the Sword, Tremontaine (have only read first two listed but bi main characters for both)
S. U. Pacat’s Captive Prince trilogy (but of course! Gay/bi main characters)
In Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series (urban/high fantasy) basically all supporting characters are bi including heroine’s love interest.
That’s all I can think of rn without my PC or bookcases to hand. Xx
Agree with all previous recs, plus regarding Sarah Rees Brennan’s Lynburn Legacy series - the bi character goes from supporting to pov character over the trilogy. It’s a fantastic series!
