Kojo the Sea Dragon Gets Lost Launch – Animal Story for Kids
It gives me great pleasure to announce that my 9th children’s book is now live!
Kojo the Sea Dragon Gets Lost is now available to download to your kindle app on your tablet, PC or phone.
I have to admit that my illustrator and I went for a different style with the images and formatting on this book and everyone I’ve read it to has given it their seal of approval.
This fun animal book for kids tells the story about Kojo the Sea Dragon who lives in the Zakari River. He has many family and friends who love him very much. He is warned by his Mom not to go to the Southside of the river as its too deep and dangerous.
One day Kojo is playing a game of hide and seek with his best friend, Kofi the Sea Turtle. Kojo’s not too good at hide and seek as he’s big and always gets found by Kofi. On this occasion, Kojo is determined to hide where Kojo can’t see him and his quest leads him to the Southside. At first he thinks he can just stay there for a little while but an unseen force pulls him towards this dark hole in the Southside. Kojo struggles against this force and almost thinks he’s going to get sucked into it until he feels a tug on his tail…
You’ll have to get your copy to see how it all transpires. Children will enjoy the illustrations in this book and also learn the value of friendship and the consequences of not following instructions.
It’s only 99 cents for this launch period and I would greatly value a review from you once you’ve read it. There’s a special coloring book I would like to give to you if you get a copy in the next few days. Simply click on the link on page 3 of the book and you’ll be directed to get your FREE Coloring book.
Thanks for all your support and I really do hope you enjoy reading this book with your loved ones.

Interview with Children’s Book Author Mary Lee
It’s Author Interview Thursday and I’m so glad you’ve joined me and our featured author today. Before we proceed in delighting in the tasty nuggets of wisdom spread across this interview, I’d like to draw your attention to something. I would like to keep you informed of all the awesome authors coming on AIT over the coming weeks and months plus other interesting developments in the publishing world as I see them. Simply enter your name and email in the box located to the right and it’d be my pleasure to fill you in on the latest on Planet DC. You’ll also get a free coloring book you can share with a loved one in your life. Now unto today’s main event.
Every successful author has their own signature style that is recognizable by their fan base and that helps to keep this fan base loyal and eager to consume all that the author publishes. Our featured author’s many best-selling books are testament to this. She not only writes but also illustrates her books. I admire her brutal honesty and her hard working and professional approach to publishing. She has a lot to share today, so please join me in welcoming Mary Lee.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you ended up being a children’s book author?
I’ve been a Graphic Designer for about 10 years so I’m used to working with Illustrators and Editors. When I was a kid I liked to write and draw but my art teacher told me there was no money in it and said that Graphic Design was a safer choice. I like design but I have a lot of ideas that nag at me. I read an article about self-publishing on Amazon and that sounded like an easy way to get my work out there without being scrutinized and watered-down by a client.
I was also looking to earn an extra few bucks to get my kids an outdoor play-set.
What can a reader expect when they pick up a Mary Lee book?
Adorable characters, teachable moments and something a child enjoys that won’t annoy the parents. Lots of stories have morals but I tend to sugar coat the moral so it’s not too obviously good for you. These are books for very young kids 0-6 so expect lots of cute and lots of color.
What is the process from when you get an idea for a book to the point it gets published?
When I get an idea I like, I’ll make a note of it on my phone. Days, maybe weeks later I’ll come back to my list of ideas and think about which ones a parent might actually want to buy their child and why. Then I’ll write a rough draft. That draft I may toss or hold onto for another few days or months. Maybe it’ll give me an idea for another book. If I still like the draft after a while, I’ll tweak it, show it to some friends and then send it to proofreading.com. Even thought these are short books, professional proof-readers are a must and can save a person from many bad reviews.
Then my favorite part is making the cover. I’ll work on what the characters look like first, do some sketches and then commit to a cover. I think every other illustration is just an extension of the feeling and general look of the cover. Depending on how much time I have and the complexity of the artwork, I may complete a page or two a day. Then I have a couple more people look it over, test it on my kids and upload it to Amazon. A day later it’s published.
What marketing methods are you using to promote your book?
This isn’t my strong suit and I’m still learning but I have a Facebook fan page, a Twitter page, a blog, and do select days. I’ve used Bookbub, Goodreads advertising and asked a few mom bloggers for reviews.
How do you handle bad reviews?
Depends on the review. If the review is well written and had good points I take it as feedback to improve upon. If the review is barely readable phrases written at 3am by someone possibly drunk, I roll my eyes. If the review is a passionate attack against the book, saying “I hate it” twenty different ways, I admit I sulk a little, whine to my husband and go get my chai tea, fluffy dog and an episode of Madmen to make me feel better.
A word of caution to newbies, never engage a reviewer. There is a pack of negative reviewers that will pounce on you if you so much as inform them they are violating Amazon or Goodreads rules. I wrote a blog post about bad reasons to give a 1-star review, which was mostly comprised of things against the rules and was pounced on with 1-star reviews that said only “I don’t like kids books.” Amazon and Goodreads will never remove these reviews or obscene bookshelves with profanity so my advice, don’t engage reviewers or ever mention the word “review” on a public site. Even good reviews, I’ve read, you shouldn’t engage to just thank them as it makes people uncomfortable. Some people feel they are just writing to other customers to help inform their buying decisions and that it’s a privacy violation for an author to engaging them.
Most children’s book writers employ the services of an illustrator. However, you write and illustrate. What comes first to you – the story or the images?
The story should always come first. It greatly influences what the character looks like, their personality and whom the book is targeted to. Yes I’ve come up with characters without a story before and they are sitting on my computer waiting for a story to come along that makes sense for them.
What advice can you give indie authors with regard to working with an illustrator to ensure the vision of their story is effectively communicated to the illustrator?
Read through the copy with them, page by page and tell them what you were envisioning for the scenes. Don’t be too strict so the illustrator has a little creative freedom. Illustrators can make better work if they feel they have a creative partnership on the book rather than doing exactly what they are told. Make sure they send you sketches and work-in-progress so you can have feedback before something is finished.
Lastly, you get what you pay for. The best illustrators are not cheap. You could have a great relationship and great communication with an illustrator but if the talent is not there, your vision will suffer.
Toy Story or Shrek?
What about “Wreck it Ralph?” Yeah I know it’s the videogame equivalent of Toy Story but I love the Vanellope character. She reminds me of me as a kid.
Which are scarier, Monsters or Dragons?
In recent kids movies, neither. Adult movies, monsters are the stuff of horror. With dragons, if you stay away from their lair, they usually leave you alone.
Do your kids inspire your work and what do they think about Mom the author?
The baby wants to eat my books and my 6-year-old wants to see them and is curious. He’s getting to be too old for them but he still asks to read them as they are done.
You’ve lived in quite a few places in the United States. Which place gave you the fondest memories and why?
I had a particularly delicious and romantic meal in Sonoma many years back that convinced me to have children.
What is a typical day for Mary Lee?
Wake up – scone – brush teeth – makeup – coffee – work – lunch – work – gym – pick up kids – help with homework – dinner - play with trains and Xbox – put kids to bed – Watch “America’s Got Talent” or “Madmen on Netflix” – pass out.
What can we expect from Mary Lee in the next 12 months?
I’m getting into the holiday spirit with my books. A Thanksgiving book is next and then maybe a Christmas one. I don’t plan that far ahead.
Where can fans and readers of your books discover more about you and connect with you?
Any advice for authors out there who are either just starting out or getting frustrated with the publishing industry?
Don’t expect too much or stake your livelihoods on it. Just because someone has a success story doesn’t mean they will be selling any copies a year from now. The market changes constantly and while I don’t want to discourage anyone, I think people should know that the vast majority of authors do not make a living doing it. While several could live well on January sales when everyone is filling up their new Kindles they got for Christmas, they may be eating Ramon noodles come the slow summer months.
I have to admit Mary that that last statement you made is something most people don’t hear about and is the sad reality of the publishing world. Still, I believe you’re a shinning example that with hard work, an understanding of the market and the willingness to pursue various avenues to market one’s books, great things are possible. You can connect with Mary by following her on Twitter by clicking the link below.

Free Kindle Downloads for Kids
If I was a fan of David Chuka, then I would love days like today!
For the very first time, I’m going to be offering something I’ve never offered before. Today, not only do you get one free book of mine that you can download to your Kindle app on your tablet, PC or phone, you get TWO!
Today, you have the opportunity to download ‘I Love My Dog’ and ‘Billy and Monster’s New Neighbor Has a Secret.’
So what are these two books about?
‘I Love My Dog’ is a dog book for kids and was created for young children between the ages of 2 – 8. You and your loved ones will fall in love with the cute dogs in this book.
Your children will have fun discovering the names of different breeds of dogs that are accompanied with an interesting fact.
In this book, children will first of all see a certain breed of dog which is depicted in a cartoon image and then on the next page, they will discover a cute photo of that dog.
This is the second book in the series ‘Animal Books for Kids.’
Below is a wonderful review I saw on Amazon for this book
This is definitely a very fun, informative and educational book about dogs. My kids truly enjoyed reading “I Love My Dog,” especially the cartoon illustrations and all the information giving full detail of each dog. This is a really nice way to teach a child about different kinds of dogs. This was the first book we read under this author, but not the last. We will definitely check out his other children books. If you want to read a really good book with your child, this it is. Buy it now! Iris Morales

Billy and Monster’s New Neighbor Has a Secret is the latest book in the Billy and Monster adventure. I have 3 more books lined up before the end of the year in this popular series of funny books for kids.
In this fourth episode, Billy and Monster get to meet a new neighbor who has a secret.
Billy and Monster live on a beautiful street with some very interesting neighbors like Mr Forgetful, Miss Squeaky and Mr GrumpDaddy whose been banned from the local butchers. Why? Because he always gives them grief when he goes to get some beef.
On a Saturday morning while playing racing cars with Monster, they hear a knock at the door. Billy’s Dad opens the door and they’re introduced to their new neighbors – The FeelGoods.
After an incident involving screams and flowing streams of tears, Billy goes to Sally FeelGoods house to make peace.
And then he discovers that Sally has a COLORFUL secret that leaves Billy’s mouth open as wide as the Grand Canyon.
Below is a review I discovered on Amazon for this book
Our five year old loved this Billy and Monster book. She is still learning to share her toys with her sister and she was completely entertained by Billy not wanting to share his toy cars with the neighbor girl. She giggled at the triple combo fart too. Funny book, great for kids who love to laugh! Rachel

Can I please ask a big favour? Please leave a good review on Amazon after you’ve read it.
You can get these two books on October 1st and 2nd 2013.
Many thanks and have a great day.

David Chuka’s Weekly Update
Hello
Its another Monday and an opportunity to fill you in on what’s happening in my world.
On a personal note, it was my dad-in-law’s birthday over the weekend and yours truly was the MC at the event. He was celebrating his 70th birthday and it was nice to see friends and family from near and far, come to honor him. I’m not even half his milestone and will count myself blessed if I get to his age and look as cheerful and healthy as him.
David Chuka is not a happy bunny…at the moment. I really was looking forward to getting ‘Kojo the Sea Dragon Gets Lost’ published over the weekend and announcing it in this column. However, my illustrator had to do some tweaking. Basically, the illustrations looked awesome but the accompanying text with each image was relatively small.
Now while I have had more than 300 glowing reviews made up of mostly 4-5 star reviews on my published books on the Amazon store, I still get the odd one which is a 3, 2 or on the rarest of occasions, a 1 star review. One review I had with ‘I Love Baby Animals’ stated that they loved the book but wished the text was bigger. It was this review I had in mind when I instructed my illustrator to amend the text on the images so it was bigger. I hope you’ll like the finished product and I also hope to do a special post announcing the launch of Kojo… very soon.
Counting to Ten and Sharing My Easter Eggs will be available as a paperback on Friday. I’m really excited about this development as I’ll be going to do a book reading at a preschool in October and it’ll be nice to not only show the children the book on a tablet but also have them see the physical copy. The cover is slightly different from the ebook version. The ebook version had green skies (Which I think looks cool) but the physical copy will have blue skies. Can you imagine what the world would look like if we had green skies?
This week on Author Interview Thursday, we have Mary Lee who is a very popular author on the Amazon Kindle store. She has written 16 books most of which have hit the Best seller categories. Amongst other things, she talks about handling bad reviews and the reality every author should face about the publishing industry. It made for a very informative and entertaining interview and definitely one you don’t want to miss.
Anyways, gotta run now. Have a productive week and DREAM BIG!

Interview with Children’s Book Author Ally Nathaniel
Drumroll please…Its Author Interview Thursday! Before we delight in today’s interview, I just wanted to ask a big favor of you. At the end of the interview, I have a couple of social media buttons, please click on them and share on Facebook, Twitter, G+ etc. Something shared in today’s interview could very well help a struggling author keep pressing on, so please do share. I have to admit that I have being a big fan of our featured author ever since I started writing children’s books. Most of her books occupy the Top 10 positions on several best seller categories on the Amazon store. Its been said that success leaves a trail and I believe we can all learn something new today from her. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming Ally Nathaniel.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you ended up being a children’s book author?
I’m the oldest out of 6 siblings. I grew up in a Kibbuts in Israel. A kibbuts is a small community where people live and work together. My Mom was an early childhood educator. She used to play with us and rhyme a lot. That’s where I got my passion and love for words and rhymes. Children’s books were always around me. I had a collection which I cherished and used to quote whenever I could, even when I grew up and was “too old” for children’s books. It was only natural for me to become a children’s author since I wanted to give children the experience I had as a child.
What can a reader expect when they pick up an Ally Nathaniel book?
They can expect to have fun, let their imagination go wild and to get a positive and empowering message.
The Girls Empowerment & Self Esteem Rhyming series has been very successful and the first book in the series (Sparkly Me) has been one of the top ten books in certain very competitive categories in the Amazon Kindle Children’s store this year with over 120 glowing reviews. What was the inspiration behind this series and are there more titles in the pipeline?
The inspiration is my daughter, my little princess. As a young girl, I was a tom-boy, so when she started to ask for sparkly things and act girly I kind of needed to “investigate” that through writing. Writing about it helped me like this mysterious area I wasn’t familiar with. I also wanted to inspire young girls to to be fully happy about who they are. I believe that there are too many messages that make girls feel bad about both their body and mind. My goal is to contradict those messages.
Do you believe in writer’s block and what do you do to overcome it?
It happens to people including myself so yes, I believe in it. I personally don’t fight it. Sometimes I can write three books in two weeks and then I don’t write anything for two months. I let my inspiration lead the way.
What has been your most successful marketing method for promoting your books?
Free promotion on Amazon KDP is a great way to get exposure. You have to let as many people as possible to know about it. I also keep mentioning my books on Facebook to implement the message. Facebook, in general, is a great way to create buzz and to let people know who you are and what you do.
What were some of your favorite books as a child?
Where to begin?
Since I grew up in Israel you might not know some of them:
1. A tale of five balloons by Miriam Roth
2. Once upon a potty by Alona Frankel
3. Yertel the turtle and other stories by Dr. Sues
4. An apartment for rent by Lea Goldberg
There were many more but these are my top four. I still have them on my shelf and I read it to my children.
What mistake(s) have you made while publishing your books that you would advise other authors against?
It’s hard to say. The book became a #1 best seller overnight. I didn’t know much about how things work. I was implementing all my new knowledge on the go, I didn’t have a plan, even though it worked. I wish I had someone telling me about collecting leads and point me to all the available and free authors resources out there. Now I have my strategy and much more knowledge and I think I basically did things right with my first book. My recommendation is to find authors support groups where you can get much knowledge and support. I didn’t know there are such groups so I did everything by myself, searching the internet for answers.
How do you reward yourself on completing a book or achieving a specific publishing goal?
I share it with friends. I allow my self to be fully happy and show how proud I’m at my work. Sometimes I take a day off.
Toy Story or Shrek?
Shrek. I laughed so hard the first time I saw this movie that nothing can beat that.
Have your children inspired any of the characters in your books and what do they think of Mommy the Writer?
Sure. The Emma character is based on my daughter. She is a girly girl and her love of sparkly shoes, skirts, t-shirts, tiaras and more, inspired me to write “Sparkly Me”. Her love to dance inspired me to write “Dancing With The Sun”.
My middle son inspired me to write “Who’s Under The Bed” after experiencing a really long time of being afraid of monsters.
When I need an inspiration, I just look around me, my children are always there…. The inspiration is endless. They are very proud with Mommy being an author. They share it with their friends. They like it when I come to their classroom and tell their friends they are the inspiration and the story behind the story.
Any tips or advice for parents whose children don’t like reading?
For some children reading can bring up feelings of loneliness (they don’t like to be by themselves in the room for example). For others, it might just be hard to read. I believe that reading stories out loud to your children from a young age can make all the difference. That way you can bring your excitement into the story and excitement is contagious. Reading together is also a good way to create a warm and loving environment. Your children will link reading with fun/closeness, which will stay with them forever.
What can we expect from Ally Nathaniel in in the next 12 months?
I have four books that I’m currently working on. I would like to say that you can expect at least eight new books that will empower children as well as their parents. I’m working on a cookbook that will help parents connect and empower their children through baking/cooking.
Where can fans and readers of your books discover more about you and connect with you?
My website, www.allyNathaniel.com
My Facebook page www.facebook.com/playfulkitchen
I encourage my fans to contact me at Ally@AllyNathaniel.com
I promise to respond ASAP to each and every question/suggestion.
Any advice for authors out there who are either just starting out or getting frustrated with the publishing industry?
Don’t waste any time and do it yourself! The worst part for me about looking for a literary agent was that they make their decisions based on how many followers you have or how big is your mailing list. They also judge your work, and for some authors this could be devastating. When you decide to self publish your book you just put your work out there and let the readers judge. There is a good chance they would appreciate the same work a publisher didn’t. Keep in mind that traditional publisher will not do the marketing for you so why give them the control over your art? The bottom line is to try and put yourself out there as soon as possible. The good news are that today it’s easier and cheaper than ever.
Remember – your work can make a difference in the world!
That was such a brilliant note to end the interview on Ally. I think sometimes we underestimate the significance of our contribution as authors in people’s lives. Words are so powerful and one word or phrase or story from your pen can truly change an adult or child’s life. You can purchase all Ally’s delightful books by clicking the link below

Weekly Update
Hello
I can’t believe we’re almost at the end of this month.
Quite a few eventful things have occurred in September. I’m proud of the fact that Billy and the Monster who Loved to Fart achieved the Number 1 position in the Manners Best-seller category on Amazon while Billy and Monster: The Superhero with Fart Powers achieved the Number One spot in the Superheroes Best-seller category on Amazon. Both books are still in the Top 10 in both categories so do get a copy for yourself or a loved one and let’s push them back to Numero UNO!
I’m also super-excited to announce that my next book ‘Kojo the Sea Dragon Gets Lost‘ should be published before the end of the month.
To the right is an image from the book. I’m currently putting the finishing touches with my illustrator. If you have any questions or comments about the image, I really would love to hear about it. This beautifully illustrated book will be ideal for 3-8 year olds. Look out for the big announcement sometime in the next seven days.
Do sign up to my Newsletter so I can inform you once its live.
This week on Author Interview Thursday, we have Ally Nathaniel who has several books in various Best-seller categories on Amazon. She has something special to share and you don’t want to miss it.
I’m currently reading the first book in the Captain Underpants series and it’s so hilarious. Will put up a review once I’m done.
Do have a wonderful week and DREAM BIG!

Interview with Children’s Book Author Adam T Newman
Guess what time it is? Its Author Interview Thursday! If Author Interview Thursday was a TV program, then I would be its biggest fan
Our featured author in the hot seat is a guy who loves what he does and was born to do what he does. He’s worked with the best in Hollywood and knows what it takes to create productions of the highest standard. I was blown away by his warmth and willingness to share from his wealth of experience. He’s doing something most Indie Authors aren’t and I know you’ll love to hear what he has to say. Please join me in welcoming Adam T. Newman.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you ended up being a children’s book author?
When I was a young boy I was caught in the middle of divorcing parents and would often escape to my room where I would read, play with my toys, watch cartoons and get lost in my imagination. People often think the grass is greener on the other side, but in my imagination, I discovered the grass could be PINK, BLUE or POLKA DOTTED. It didn’t matter! Story telling and making people laugh were things that seemed to come natural to me. After college, I landed an amazing job as a graphic designer for a children’s animation studio in Los Angeles, got married and had two amazing kids.
On June 21, 2010, my life was turned upside down. I lost one of the most beautiful and amazing people I have ever met, my mother-in-law, Lois. On her way to her aerobics class that day, Lois was killed in a horrific car accident.
Darkness surrounded us and I knew as a husband, father and son, I still needed to be strong and supportive for everyone around me. I tried to keep myself held together by channeling my creative energy and I focused on writing a silly story that Lois would have LOVED to laugh with and read to all her grandchildren. I shared the story with Mike, my father-in-law. He was just as an amazing person as Lois. He LOVED the story and loved what I was doing in honor of Lois. Unfortunately, before the book was finalized, Mike passed away of a heart attack while driving home to see us for a family dinner. Time stopped once again. It was then I decided to form MiLo Ink Books. Mike+Lois = MiLo. Lois was an extremely talented calligrapher, which is where the “INK” came into play.
What have been some of the highs and lows of running MiLo Ink Books?
Being an independent author and running a start up company had many challenges. I quickly discovered that it was extremely difficult to get my product out there. Success doesn’t happen overnight and I knew it was going to take a lot of hard work. One thing I thought would help was to reach out to schools. I put together a school presentation, where I read my book, joke and interact with students. I use my humor and “author status” to speak to the kids about INSPIRATION. I explain how you can be inspired by something good or even something bad. I also have the pleasure of introducing Mike & Lois to all these fresh faces. Since I started my tour (I have been to over 50 schools), I have received many fan emails from parents thanking me for inspiring their children. Many parents have even sent me books their children wrote after hearing my story. It is so rewarding to know that I have the ability to help shape so many great young minds.
Distribution is something I have found to be most challenging. Stores do not greet independent authors with the open arms as one may imagine. There are many services out there that can help, but they can cost a fortune, with no guarantee. I feel blessed with all that I have accomplished so far, and love meeting new fans from across the world! Everything has to start somewhere and MiLo Ink Books will continue to grow, I can promise you that!
What can a reader expect when they pick up an Adam T. Newman book?
Readers can expect a book that is filled with imagination, creative humor and stories that parents and their children can relate to. Captivating illustrations are a must and my stories are all told in rhyme. My books invite parents to be silly and interact with their children, use silly voices and help create childhood memories that will last a lifetime.
Can you tell us the process from when you got the idea for ‘How to Catch a Cold’ to writing, illustrating and publishing it.
When I write, I like to create a blueprint, or map, of the story. I start with the title, jot down a few scenes, add a few lines I know that I want to have in the story and I take it from there. As I write I do not restrict myself. I know and understand that I will fine tune and edit later on down the road.
After “How to Catch a Cold” was in a completed stage, I created an audio version of the story. I added some sound FX, used silly voices and added a little music. Once the audio version was complete, I played it for my kids and took notes of their reactions. Listening to the audio allowed me to critique and make further changes. I remember there was a joke that didn’t work as well as I had originally thought. There was also a remark that could be interpreted as being inappropriate, and there were a few small scenes I felt were unnecessary.
The next stage is the tweaking stage, where I cut out parts, rewrite and condense.
Once the story was in its final stage, I sent it off to my editor.
After the story was finalized, I started my pagination and story-boarded all the drawings I wanted to have illustrated. I then sent the story off to my illustrator and allowed her to generate some of her own ideas. Shortly after, I sent her my storyboard to use as a guideline. While my illustrator began the drawing process, I began to set up my printer and distribution arrangements. I also began building my webpage, Facebook page and even started putting together a marketing plan and promotional ideas. Once all the illustrations were finished and approved, I laid out all the files, set up my documents and submitted them to the printer. Weeks later, I received my copy of the book in the mail and the rest is history.
Do you believe in writer’s block and what do you do to overcome it?
I definitely believe in writers block. If I’m stumped, I remind myself that there is no wrong answer and I attempt to write through it. Sometimes, instead of complete sentences, I write a few rhyming words, or a general idea. These are words that I may never even use in the story, but it helps me get over the hump. When I am really stumped, and the first method doesn’t work, I flat out stop what I am doing and take a nice long break away from writing. Sometimes a nice break is just what the doctor ordered. More than often I find that some of the simple ideas I jotted down the day before, spark an even bigger, better idea.
What has been your most successful marketing method for promoting your books?
My school tour is what has helped me sell the most books so far. I figured if I can incorporate a lesson with my book and put together a memorable presentation that engages and inspires the students, they will then go home excited and from there sales are generated. Word of mouth also starts to spread. Of course, sending home each student with my bookmarks containing info on my book and website doesn’t hurt either.
You’ve worked in several film studios in Los Angeles in the Art and Design departments. What would you say is the major difference between the film and publishing industries and how are they also similar?
There is not a whole lot of difference except for the fact that now I am working for myself and not a huge company. When I work for a studio, there is the job, then there is the approval process. People from directors to lawyers all have a say. Sometimes there are 10-20 people who need to approve and that can take a long time. With my books, I am the ultimate decision maker. I am also in charge of my budget. When you work for yourself, there is more of a reason to make sure it is 100% perfect because your product is a direct reflection of you. Your pride, talent and passion for your projects shine as clear as day.
What were some of your favorite books as a child?
I had many favorites. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, The Giving Tree and Where the Wild Things Are were some of my all time favorites.
What mistake(s) have you made while publishing your book that you would advise other authors against?
I don’t think I made too many mistakes, however I certainly learned a ton with my first book that helped educate me for my future projects. For example, I learned that libraries and schools seem to prefer hardback books. I also discovered that most POD companies cannot print text on the spine if the book has under 45 pages. Since then, I started speaking with a number of printing houses to get around these issues.
How do you reward yourself on completing a book or achieving a specific publishing goal?
I remember being so excited when my book came in the mail. I did not even know it had arrived. My children saw the package outside by the door when they came home from school and ran into my office screaming with excitement. It was one of the most amazing days of my life. I remember taking photos of the book and calling friends. Afterward, even though it was a school night, we got into the car and went out to one of our favorite restaurants for dinner.
What’s your best Disney movie and what do you love about it?
Man, I love Disney movies, and it is hard to pick a “best”, but I think I have to say Finding Nemo. There is nothing more important to me than my family. I saw a lot of me in Marlin, Nemo’s dad, and a lot of my son in Nemo. I loved how Marlin stopped at nothing to search for and bring his son back home.
Did your children inspire any of the characters in your book and what do they think of Daddy the Writer?
YES, as a matter of fact, the main character in my book, How to Catch a Cold, is based on my son. I never mention his name in the story but during my school tour I show the students a photo of my son and let them in on that little secret. Both of my kids love the fact that their daddy is an author. They get such a kick out of kids recognizing me in public, and my son also gets a kick out of seeing himself on books, shirts and bookmarks. In fact, this past year at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, kids kept returning to the MiLo Ink Books booth just to take a photo with him!
You’ve done a lot of presentations at schools and events. What tips do you have for children book authors for getting reading engagements and also offering a memorable presentation?
Getting into a school for the first time is the hardest part. My wife was a teacher for many years and we have a few teacher contacts that helped me get in touch with the correct people. It is always nice to have someone that can open the door for you, but then it is up to you to impress and make a name for yourself. If you do a great performance, the principal, teacher or librarian can then make some calls on your behalf to other schools where they know someone else. The more people talk highly of you, the easier it gets!
Having a presentation that engages, and holds their attention is a MUST. Teachers can read your book, but you as the author must know how to present it. It is important to connect with your audience. Reading in a silly tone and interacting with them are a few helpful tips. Also, do something more than just reading your book. Have a second act. Have something that will make your presentation memorable. I like to tell a story about INSPIRATION using two kids in the audience as the main characters. I keep the story fun and silly but I also have a point to it. Another thing I do is a little number on my name. I do this so the kids will remember my name, and hopefully go home and talk about me with their parents.
What has been the craziest request/question a child has asked you at a school event?
I love kids and it is true, kids say the darnedest things! I have been asked how old I am, do I play with dolls, and I was even asked what type of cell phone I have followed up by what is my phone number. I remember telling that child, my phone number is 123-456-7890. Months later, I ran into that same child at an event in a store and he asked if my phone number was still 123-456-7890. A word from the wise: Kids remember things, so be careful what you tell them!
What can we expect from Adam Newman in the next 12 months?
I am currently in production with my newest book which I promise will be filled with even more laughter and fun. I am also developing a brand new school presentation that will coincide with my newest book.
Where can fans and readers of your books discover more about you and connect with you?
I absolutely LOVE speaking with fans and meeting new people! I am constantly updating and interacting with people on Twitter, Facebook and have a website where you can read more about me and email me directly.

Any advice for authors out there who are either just starting out or getting frustrated with the publishing industry?
Like any profession, it is always going to be a challenge to succeed. Networking, talking to others in the same field and researching are all very important things to do. It is up to you to work hard and think outside the box. Fall in love with what you do, make it enjoyable, and everything will fall into place. Understand and accept that there will be many bumps in the road, but never lose sight of your goal. A dream is just a dream until you make it a reality!

All the Wrong Questions Review
While at the London Book Fair earlier this year, I went to one seminar that offered freebies at the end. One of the freebies was a hardback edition of ‘Who Could That Be At This Hour? By Lemony Snicket. It’s been on my to-do list for quite a while and I finally got round to reading the book in the last few weeks. Below is my review of this book which I posted on the GoodReads website.
Why did I read this book? Has this book added any value to my life? Will I bother reading the next instalment?
These questions and more might be questions you will find yourself asking yourself while reading and after you’ve finished reading this book. It took me a while to get into this book. Because the writing style is unlike anything I’m used to, I found it hard settling into that comfort zone you get into when you’re familiar with a writer’s style and assured that the journey, regardless of the detours, bumps and surprises will be a good one.
The story is about a young sleuth called Lemony Snicket who seems to have graduated from sleuth school and has to prove himself in the real world by solving a case. Lemony has to become the apprentice of S. Theodora Markson. Don’t ask me what the S. stands for as that will definitely be the wrong question. Their mission is to return the Bombinating Beast to its rightful owner in a god-forsaken town called Staind-by-the-Sea. This god-forsaken town has a handful of memorable characters who you’ll enjoy reading about.
I was fascinated by Lemony’s relationship with his chaperone – S. Theodora Markson as it becomes clear there needs to be a reversal of roles. Nothing is as it seems in this book and over the pages I grew to love it. Things eventually fall into place.. well almost. The end leaves you with this dissatisfied contentment. Almost as if the writer wanted to achieve a sense of obfuscation which here means confusion resulting from failure to understand.
Like Marmite, some will love this and some might very well hate it but I’ll let you be the judge and encourage you to have a read.

David Chuka’s Weekly Update
Hello and a Happy Monday to You!
First of all, I have to share with you something personal. It was my son’s first day in the big school and I had the privilege to walk with him to school today. It only seems like yesterday when he came into this world on a rainy Sunday morning. I wonder if he’ll remember today when he’s much older and all the fuss I put him through.
My illustrator’s almost finished on my latest book and I’ll see the final set of pictures tomorrow. I’m hopeful the book will get published before the end of the month. Kojo the Sea Dragon Gets Lost is a beautiful picture book for 2-7 year olds. It’s a story about a dragon who lives underwater and gets lost while playing hide and seek which kids will relate to. Children will learn about obedience, remembering things and helping others in trouble. Look out for the big announcement soon.
On Author Interview Thursday this week, we have Adam T. Newman who is the author of the popular book ‘How to Catch a Cold.’ I’m particularly looking forward to sharing this interview as Adam talks about presenting at schools and how to get this kind of gigs. He also shares an intimate story of how he got into writing books which will really leave an impression on you. Tune in this Thursday.
Tomorrow, I’m going to post a review on a book I recently finished reading by Lemony Snickett titles ‘All the Wrong Questions.‘ Look out for it tomorrow.
I’m working on the next Billy and Monster book about Halloween and ran into a bit of Writer’s block. I wouldn’t really call it Writer’s block…more a lack of flow. I know what the story is about, the characters and where it ends but getting that first line is proving difficult. Oh well, will keep on trying and will let you know once its complete.
Do have a fantastic week!
