All the Wrong Questions Review
While at the London Book Fair earlier this year, I went to one seminar that offered freebies at the end. One of the freebies was a hardback edition of ‘Who Could That Be At This Hour? By Lemony Snicket.
It’s been on my to-do list for quite a while and I finally got round to reading the book in the last few weeks. Below is my review of this book which I posted on the GoodReads website.
Why did I read this book? Has this book added any value to my life? Will I bother reading the next instalment?
These questions and more might be questions you will find yourself asking yourself while reading and after you’ve finished reading this book. It took me a while to get into this book. Because the writing style is unlike anything I’m used to, I found it hard settling into that comfort zone you get into when you’re familiar with a writer’s style and assured that the journey, regardless of the detours, bumps and surprises will be a good one.
The story is about a young sleuth called Lemony Snicket who seems to have graduated from sleuth school and has to prove himself in the real world by solving a case. Lemony has to become the apprentice of S. Theodora Markson. Don’t ask me what the S. stands for as that will definitely be the wrong question. Their mission is to return the Bombinating Beast to its rightful owner in a god-forsaken town called Staind-by-the-Sea. This god-forsaken town has a handful of memorable characters who you’ll enjoy reading about.
I was fascinated by Lemony’s relationship with his chaperone – S. Theodora Markson as it becomes clear there needs to be a reversal of roles. Nothing is as it seems in this book and over the pages I grew to love it. Things eventually fall into place.. well almost. The end leaves you with this dissatisfied contentment. Almost as if the writer wanted to achieve a sense of obfuscation which here means confusion resulting from failure to understand.
Like Marmite, some will love this and some might very well hate it but I’ll let you be the judge and encourage you to have a read.
