Interview With Children’s Book Author Linda May Kallestein

Today we’re having an interview with Linda May Kallestein  who is a co-owner of the publishing firm Kallestein Publishing. Mary KallensteinEven though they’re a new publishing firm, I have been very impressed by the success they’ve had thus far. The first book she published is now a best-seller in 3 categories on the Amazon store and is currently number ONE in the Alphabets category. I enjoyed interviewing Linda. Let’s welcome Linda.

Tell us about your latest book and what formats is it available in?

The last book that has been published is a picture book for toddlers called “Baby Animals”. It is exactly what the title suggests: a book of photos of baby animals. Each new animal section starts with a question of what a particular baby of an animal is called. The next page reveals the answer and a photograph. Several photographs of other baby animals in the same species follow.

The book is currently in Kindle format only and can be purchased on Amazon at http://amzn.to/Xr2svA

What other picture books have you written Linda?

Kallestein Publishing is a very new company. We have published 2 books on Amazon in the Kindle format:

Baby Animals - http://amzn.to/Xr2svA

-a Spanish edition of Baby Animals called Animales Bebe - http://amzn.to/156FSxQ

Animal Kingdom Alphabet - http://amzn.to/UL6QJ7

These are the first two books in a series called “I Love Animals – Fact” Picture Books.

What makes your picture books unique?

Kallestein Publishing loves animals. We are developing two main series that reflect this: “I Love Animals – FACT” and “I Love Animals – FICTION”. We will have several sub-series in each main series and will target all ages, from baby to adult.Animal Kingdom Alphabet Cover

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

As long as I can remember. I have always written something or another. My first attempts at writing was poems, which later developed into song lyrics that actually were used by choirs in Norway where I grew up! As an adult I did a lot of writing as a freelance journalist, before writing fiction in screenplay format. I am now focusing on books, both fact and fiction. I consider myself first and foremost a storyteller. The messages I feel strongly about are conveyed through diverse formats to reach different audiences in different ways.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

For me it is being true to my calling. I have tried other careers (even successfully!) but it wasn’t until I stepped into my calling as a writer (or storyteller as I prefer to call myself), that I felt completely in balance with my soul. It’s tough being a writer. Some days everything flows. Others it’s all uphill. Making a decent living from it takes years. Other days it is like being in Paradise. Being a storyteller has opened doors to areas in life and the world around me that never would have been opened to me otherwise.

It requires dedication and the conviction that THIS is what I was meant to do in my life, in order to keep going year after year. I love it

Where do you get your ideas?

I am one of the blessed storytellers that has so many ideas that even if I lived 10 lifetimes, I wouldn’t have told all the stories I have ideas for. Every new day brings new ideas. I observe life going on around me: people interacting with each other or nature, people dealing with life in general. Life is my greatest inspiration.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I love to travel. I love going to intimate music performances. I love watching movies. I love making and eating good food with great people. I love reading. When not writing, I live my life. For me, life is research.

Do you have kids (or grandchildren) and are they an inspiration to your picture books?

I have two sons, but they are now 16 years old and 20 years old. My oldest son, Elias, is a professional artist. He is the other half of the Kallestein Publishing. Elias is our illustrator and graphic designer. He also suggests story concepts or characters. We discuss the illustrations and the overall design, but he does the actual visual work.BABY Dog

Where’s the best place you been to on holiday?

I don’t have one favourite place. Any place off the beaten track with a backpack is a holiday I love. Kenya and Zanzibar are two current favorites. Otherwise I love urban holidays to New York and London.

Anything else that you’d like to add Linda?

I am passionate about human rights and animal rights, both of which are reflected in my work.

I am originally from New York, but moved to Norway when I was 11 years. Currently Oslo, Norway is my base for travels.

Thank you Linda for spending time with us and answering our questions. I personally learnt a lot and look forward to more children’s books from you and Kallestein Publishing.

Book Launch – Counting to Ten and Sharing My Easter Eggs is LIVE!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls…I’m happy to announce that the latest book from David Chuka is now live!Counting to Ten

Counting to Ten and Sharing My Easter Eggs can now be downloaded to your kindle or kindle app for 99c/99p. This is a book for little children who are just learning to count and read.

The general concept of the book is about a little girl who is looking forward to Easter and has been given a basket of Easter eggs to share with her friends. I believe 3 things will make this book a winner with your little ones.

First of all, it has the most cutest images which are very different from the ones I have employed on my other books. These images will greatly appeal to the 0-5 year olds.

Secondly, children will enjoy counting to ten as this book has interesting rhymes that will make counting a fun and enjoyable experience. A snippet from the book.

Here’s ONE for Tommy who likes all things yummy

Two for Molly and her twin sister Polly.

And thirdly, numbers are isolated on each page so children can identify and recognise them as they read the book.

The first time I read the entire book to my three year old boy, I asked him what he liked about the book. He said he loved the Christmas eggs :-)

I believe your loved one will love this one. Feel free to leave a comment after you’ve read it with your little ones.

Counting Book for Kids – My Next Project

Here’s what’s cooking at the moment. Little Girl Counting

I’m currently putting the finishing touches to a book for pre-schoolers that is geared towards helping them recognize numbers and count from one to ten. What is a bit unique in this book compared to most books on the market is that children’s attention will be captivated two-fold: with the beautiful images on each page (to the right is one of the images in the book which is very different from the illustrations I have employed on my other children’s books) and also the rhyming flow as each number is introduced.

The basic concept of the book is that we have a little girl who has a few things to share with her family…I won’t say more :-)

This should be ready for launch before the end of the week so be on the lookout for this one.

Thank You

Billy and the Monster who Loved to Fart was published less than a week ago and it’s beenMonster Farting Outside Door a good success.

We had a free promo day on Amazon Kindle and had downloads in the hundreds.

What has been particularly humbling has been the reviews some people who have downloaded the book have left. A few are below

Somehow you don’t want to love this book because it just goes against any and all standard you might hold yourself to professionally, but you just can’t help it. In the end, this book has a pretty good, albeit unusual lesson for kids. My own children laughed uproariously at the pictures in this story and enjoyed the actual story as well. –   Ionia Martin

Yes dear readers kids now have a new friend called the Fart Monster. A buddy that lets them off the hook big time. In this imaginative story by David Chuka your child’s imagination will leap to new bounds in giving kids cover for what comes so naturally. The great thing about this is you don’t have to hold your nose to enjoy a fun story that is sure to have you and child laughing out loud. – StevieV

I’m really laughing hard as the character, Billy, in this story is never alone. Wherever Billy goes, his Monster goes. As a single child he has invented his own companion. But Monster is always farting and Billy is always getting the blame. A great lesson of manners for young ones…and old ones! The illustrations in this children’s book are wonderful, the dialog is great. This is a really cute story written by Author David Chuka. I enjoyed reading it and am anxious to share it with my 5-year old neighbor friend, Jake. He’ll love it! A definite fun read for all. – Nancy

You can read all the reviews Here

I’m also happy to say that we’re currently in the Top 20 in the Bestseller category – Comic Strips & Cartoons category on the Amazon Store. Hopefully as word goes round about this book, we’ll climb the rankings.

I just want to say a big thank you to all my family, friends, fellow authors, illustrator, editor and I guess most importantly, everyone who took the time to pay for and download this book plus the wonderful people who left a review on Amazon to testify of their enjoyment of this book. Your investment of time, money and love is truly appreciated.

Thank you.

Billy and the Monster who Loved to Fart is now Available

I’m happy to announce that my long awaited and first picture story book is now available to purchase on Amazon. Billy and the Monster

A little background on how and when this book was written.

It was Boxing Day 2012. It’s early morning and I have woken up and the house is so quiet that you could hear the sound of holiday snores in various tones and vibrations coming from different rooms. My little boy has crawled into bed between my wife and I. I’m laying there and tired of counting sheep (viewers of Sesame Street will remember the episode where The Count came to spend the night with Ernie to understand what I was going through). I finally decide that I might as well go downstairs and do some writing.

I creep down the stairs and I’m very careful not to wake up anybody. I peep in the living room but there’s someone there…sleeping. In the little room just next to the kitchen is a sofa and I make myself comfortable. I begin thinking about a story that’s funny but has a lesson that young ones can learn from. I think of a boy and a monster…who loves to fart. I begin to write and write and write. And after about 90 minutes Billy and the Monster who Loved to Fart is born!

The themes addressed in this book include friendship, doing things in moderation and also developing good social skills. It’s very funny and I know you’ll love it.

Latest Book Coming Out This Week!

I’m currently putting the finishing touches to my latest book ‘Billy and the Monster who Loved to Fart’dad talking to Billy IMAGE 20

This will be my first picture story book and one that I am very proud of. This book is geared towards 4-8 year olds but I can guarantee that older ones and adults will have a laugh or two.

The story is about a little boy and his monster who has a problem with emitting disgusting fumes from his posterior quadrant. A major event at school ends up with Billy having a chat with his Dad. Will he learn how to do the right thing or will monster cause him to forever be the shooting target for people’s irritations?

Keep your eyes peeled out for this one. Definitely one for your library.
