It offers a penetrating account of Egyptian culture, the role of women in society, and the profundity of love. The story begins in 1940. Haran Issawi, chief advisor to King Faruk, discusses with his top security men newly discovered intelligence of an assassination plot against him to be carried out by the Group of the X, a proletarian nationalist organization that seeks to overthrow the Egyptian government.

The Lake takes the characters in After Rafaela and turns them into pure evil. I've added a male narrator into the story called Ellis Yannick. I wanted to use the characters from After Rafaela to really drill down and examine what makes people evil. There's evil in all of us as well as good. It's fascinating to research.(less)

I am deeply fascinated by family lines and generational traits. I wanted Aimee Ibrahim - my protagonist in The Hidden to have a daughter who carried on the legacy of Aimee's mother Hezba, the Egyptian Sultan's daughter. Thinking deeply about Aimee's daughter made me realise that she needed her own very powerful story, and so The Unforgiven was born.

On grieving......

Picture Two defining moments shaped my life in those early years. The first was my deeply intense relationship with my teenage best friend, who I will call D, out of respect for her privacy. D and I were inseparable. When our worlds were changing and we were changing with them, D and I found solace in each other. Together we felt we could take on the world. She was, in essence, my first love - a love tha Read more of this blog post »
