In this case the novel was a sequel to my first novel, "The Last Detail," and the filmmakers could not put together the original cast. Rather than recast, we decided to keep everything we could from the book but change the names, the service, and the shared experience from the past that they have not been able to put behind them.(less)

The Navy itself has changed dramatically, but it was always changing. ("It used to be iron men and wooden ships; now it's the opposite.") When I was coming up it was "Mister Roberts" and "Caine Mutiny" and "Sand Pebbles." You can see the difference. A crew put together a stage adaptation, a musical, for the N.Y. play festival years ago and billed it as the "Anti-On the Town," which I thought was apt. (At a loss to read the semaphore Sierra Hotel.)

“The messenger says, as he approaches him, “Look, Baggs, it didn’t happen on my watch.” The Navy theme song. “Yes?” “Somebody down below in the offices…” “Yes?” “Well, what they did is lose all your records.” Baggs can only close his eyes and wonder what sin it was that now consigns him to limbo.”
Darryl Ponicsan, The Stairway Press Collected Edition of The Last Detail and Cinderella Liberty

“By the time they were free to scrap her, she had a tradition and champions, hundreds of officers and men who had served aboard her and counted those months as the worst of their lives, yet with a perversity of human nature better left unexamined they did not want to see her dismantled. She was like so many Norfolk bargirls: too old and ugly to love, but too many laughs to junk.”
Darryl Ponicsan, The Stairway Press Collected Edition of The Last Detail and Cinderella Liberty

“Some people can't wait to get where they're going; others can't bear the thought of ever arriving. - Darryl Ponicsan”
