The Last Detail is unique, as it turns out. I can't point out any current Navy fiction. The Navy itself has changed dramatically, but it was always changing. ("It used to be iron men and wooden ships; now it's the opposite.") When I was coming up it was "Mister Roberts" and "Caine Mutiny" and "Sand Pebbles." You can see the difference. A crew put together a stage adaptation, a musical, for the N.Y. play festival years ago and billed it as the "Anti-On the Town," which I thought was apt. (At a loss to read the semaphore Sierra Hotel.)

It started as a parody of Nora Ephron's "I Feel Bad About My Neck," and like that one it has aspects of a memoir, but it falls short of a true memoir because it omits necessary elements. What it does cover as memoir has the benefit of blessed brevity.

You're referring to the movie adaptation, Sharon. Often in book to movie adaptations major changes are required for any number of reasons. In this case the novel was a sequel to my first novel, "The Last Detail," and the filmmakers could not put together the original cast. Rather than recast, we decided to keep everything we could from the book but change the names, the service, and the shared experience from the past that they have not been able to put behind them.

"Last Flag Flying" revisits the characters from my first novel thirty-four years later. The first, "The Last Detail," was Vietnam era; this one is Iraq war era. Never a loss for wars.
