Grimm End #8: The Attack (Beta Edition)
By the time the sun had risen, a small crowd of people had been milling around in the mausoleum. Daniel had immediately gone to wake up their mother, Matthew and Jason. And Bramwell had summoned the Sheriff. Jason and the Sheriff both went to work examining inside and outside of the mausoleum.
Sara looked at what was left of the front of the vault where Thomas was laid to rest just the day before. She had picked up the plate that had his name and the years of his birth and death. Whatever they had used to bludgeon open the vault bent the plate and distorted the etched words.
She didn’t know why someone would steal his body. What would they want with it? Daniel had suggested that they would hold it for ransom. She didn’t think so. If they wanted to hold someone for ransom, the usual way would be to grab someone who’s alive, not someone who’s dead.
Daniel notice Gwen standing at the edge of the forest. She had stopped by to see if he wanted to take an early morning walk with her. Daniel told her the situation.

Grimm End #7: The Body (Beta Edition)
Jason and Daniel pushed their way through the crowd that had gathered around the statue. Many in the crowd were sobbing or holding their hands over their mouths in horror at the legs that were sticking out from under the statue. Jason flatten himself on the ground to look under it.
“Daniel. Quick. Down here.” He called frantically. Daniel joined him on the ground.
Daniel saw that the statue was actually teetering on its base above the girls but hadn’t actually fallen on them. The weight of the statue should have brought it down right on top of them, but it was almost like it was hovering over them. He looked at Jason and it was obvious that Jason didn’t understand what had happened either.
“Help me pull them out.” Jason said and grabbed the legs of the nearest girl. They slid her out from under the metal figure of Charles Monroe and carried her a few feet away. It was the girl that had been sitting on the bench. Daniel noticed that even though she lay unconscious, her hands were clenched into fists by her sides. She didn’t have any injuries that either one of them could see.

NaNoWriMo
Every year in November, National Novel Writing Month challenges participants to write 50,000 words in 30 days. I participated in 2006 when I wrote my first attempt at a Grimm End story. I managed to crank out about a dozen words above the 50,000 mark and ended up qualifying as a winner for the year. However, I did no planning ahead of time and ended up with some interesting ideas but not much of what you would call a novel.
In the years since then, I haven’t taken the time to participate. The 50,012 words that make up that first attempt still sit in a folder on my computer untouched since that last day of November in 2006. I’ve tried to jump start it several times but only succeeded in creating entertaining, but fairly useless, scenes that lead nowhere.
This year, I have done an abundance of planning and have what appears to be a workable list of 60 or so scenes that I want to flesh out and may, by the end of November, end up with a decent first draft of my first novel.
I know that some authors look down on the NaNoWriMo exercise. I feel that, while I will not end with a finished novel, for me it is a good exercise. I can disconnect my inner editor and allow the writer in me to pour out a large number of words in a rough form. The creation of the first draft of a written work is my biggest weakness. However, I know that I can shape just about anything into something entertaining through editing later.
If you are in the mood for writing a boat-load of words in November, come join us. If not, I’ll see you in December when it is over.
