Effie needs a home
As many of you know, I have two dogs, Gypsy and Loki. Gypsy is 15 and a half, so not unexpectedly, her health has declined. The decline has been most significant this year, when she lost most of her ability to see and hear, plus she is unstable on her feet due to hip issues, arthritis (yes, we're doing all the treatments) and other old-age related issues. Because of all this, Gypsy can no longer play with Loki, who is half her age and still has a lot of energy. So, we looked into getting another dog. Our local Humane Society has a program where you can do a "sleepover" with a dog you're considering adopting, so we did that Saturday night with a very sweet dog named Effie.
Effie was SUCH a good girl. So sweet, gentle, obedient, and loving. Effie was shy when I met her in the shelter's "bonding" room, but when she got to my house, she relaxed and wanted to snuggle, play with toys, or just sit near me. My dog Loki, however, reacted to Effie with what could only be called psychotic rage. Seriously, Cujo on cocaine would've been more chill. Loki repeatedly tried to attack Effie, and yes, I'm familiar with the difference between rough playing and attacking. This wasn't playing. This was vicious, and so unexpected. Loki has been around other dogs before and had never acted this way. It reminded me of when my Mom's normally-kind dog got violently protective of her after her health failed. Perhaps Loki thought he had to protect Gypsy in her frail health, or perhaps he just lost his furry shit.
I don't know, but nothing my husband or I did could dissuade Loki, and normally, a mere stern look would send Loki into tail-down repentance. But despite employing several different methods for hours, Loki kept going berserk. This scared poor Effie, as you can imagine. It also stressed Gypsy out to the point that we knew her health couldn't take this long-term. That is why we knew keeping Effie wouldn't be an option.
I slept out on the couch with Effie while hubby had Loki and Gypsy in the bedroom. Even after her frightening day going to a strange house where a crazed dog kept trying to attack her, Effie was SO sweet, calm, and loving. Her tail would thump with happiness every time I looked over at her, and when I pet her, she would close her eyes and give me one of those heart-warming doggie smiles. She slept with her head on my foot, and didn't once bark or act restless even though she was in unfamiliar surroundings. If I didn't know that it would kill Gypsy to go through the time and training it would take to correct Loki's inexplicably vicious reaction, I wouldn't be typing this post because I'd be keeping Effie. But, we can't risk Gypsy's health with added stress when we probably won't have her much longer anyway.
So, I gave Effie back to the shelter the next morning. She cried when I handed her over to the attendant, and I burst into the kind of tears you never want to shed in public because blubbering like that in front of people is embarrassing.
Over only one night? some of you might be thinking. Hey, I get the skepticism, but the protective shell I have that keeps people at emotional arms-length is absolutely missing when it comes to dogs. Especially dogs like Effie, who are so sweet, loving and eager to have a family that she would've been happy to put up with my home, even with its crazed canine occupant. That is why, as the subject line says, Effie needs a home.
Effie is five years old and weighs forty-seven pounds. She's a mixed breed, so while her face looks a little Pitt-y, her body looks like a cross between a (smaller) Gray hound and a Shepard. She has short brown hair with subtle, brindle-like markings and brown eyes. She knew basic commands like sit, stay, paw, come, and she was potty-trained. I've sponsored her adoption fees, so there's no cost to adopt her beyond the filing fees for her rabies tag, and yes, she's up to date on all her shots. Revised beginning AND third chapter for WICKED BITE

I was going to wait until after I'd completed my copy edits to post this, but I kept getting emails that said (paraphrased) "Can we pleeeeeez have the third chapter nowwwwwwww?"
*grins* Yes, you can.
I've also revised the prologue and first two chapters that were already posted, so I'm deleting the old versions and putting the new, updated version all in the same place. Smart Bitches podcast interview
A little over a week ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sarah from the Smart Bitches, Trashy Books blog in a podcast interview. Now, I say *I* had the pleasure honestly, but poor Sarah had to listen to me ramble, lose my train of thought mid-question, and say "you know" every other sentence. Adventures in pet parenting
Sorry for the blog silence lately. I've been working on revisions for WICKED BITE, which are due in exactly a week. As usual with revisions, many scenes have now been tweaked and/or changed. So, to everyone contacting me to say "I just signed up for the newsletter, can I still get the third chapter?" the answer is yes and no. No, I'm not doing a new newsletter with the chapter. But yes, you can still get it. You'll just have to wait since I've made some slight changes to Chapter Three (and some tweaks to Chapter One, too) during revisions. I'm going to post all three revised chapters on my website after my editor approves the changes. This will probably be at the end of this month, or the beginning of next month.
Revisions haven't been the only thing keeping me busy. As many of you know, I have two dogs, Gypsy and Loki. I'll be the first to admit that they're spoiled rotten because I cannot say no to a cute doggie gaze - it's my kryptonite. Pity my husband, who had to do most of their training because of this, but don't let him fool you. Aside from making sure that they don't chew our furniture out from underneath us - I am convinced that Shiba Inus are part termite because they LOVE to gnaw on wood! - he is putty in their furryhands paws.
Anyway, Gypsy turned 15 in February, so she is close to the end of her expected life span. This means that whenever something is off with her, I pretty much panic because I don't know if it's a temporary illness or The End. As a senior dog, she already has some limitations due to arthritis, being mostly blind and being partially deaf, but she's still her spoiled, happy self most days. However, a week ago, she started panting, staggering and falling. We took her to the vet and found out that a bad ear infection caused vestibular disease with nystagmus. If you don't know what that means, neither did I! I've since learned that the vestibular apparatus allows dogs to "determine if they are upside down, standing up straight or falling...all while allowing their eyes to follow moving objects without becoming dizzy..." Nystagmus is a compulsive back-and-forth rotational eye movement. So, according to the vet, having her vestibular out of whack with nystagmus made poor Gypsy feel like she was horribly seasick while walking on ground that kept moving and/or disappearing beneath her, all while her eyes compulsively kept jerking to the right (sounds awful!)
Thankfully, it's not permanent, but its debilitating effects last a week to ten days. That's why this past week, between trying to revise my book, I've also been crawling after Gypsy trying to get her to take her many medications and eat or drink - difficult when the poor girl is understandably VERY nauseous - plus carrying her outside to go to the bathroom since she can't walk. When I say I was crawling after her, by the way, I mean crawling. Since her depth perception is all out of whack, having someone loom over her made Gypsy even more anxious than her awful symptoms already did. That's why I got down on all fours to give her her food, meds and water several times a day, then crawled after her when she'd stagger away because her nausea meant she didn't want them. My husband tried to help, but nothing brings out my control-freak nature more than seeing my furbaby in distress, so I insisted on doing most of it myself. We also couldn't restrain her to force-feed her the meds or food since she'd struggle, which, with her bad arthritis, would cause her even more pain and difficulty moving, not to mention add to her stress.
Gypsy is much better now - thank God! - but I have paid for being a control freak. Last night, when I hunkered down to give Gypsy her evening meds, I shrieked when I tried to stand back up. My right knee has apparently decided that I am DONE crawling. If I disagree, I can enjoy a sharp, stabbing sensation in said knee. *grins* Is this my right knee telling me to accept more help when it is offered in the future? Or is it my knee telling me to do some damn yoga to firm up my joints, if I insist on taking everything on myself? I can only wonder...while taking Advil and refraining from any more crawling ;). I'll close with a pic of Gypsy, who is thankfully back on her feet.

This is going to be another short post because (1) I'm recovering from bronchitis, which laid me out for ten days, and (2) I am almost at the end of Wicked Bite, so that's where my main focus is now that I'm not bedridden with fever and hacking coughs. I'm getting a lot of questions about the third chapter of Wicked Bite and the newsletter, so I'm doing a Q&A to help clear some things up.

Buried, new newsletter, new chapter, etc.
Hi everyone! Just a quick note to say that I am barreling toward the finish of Wicked Bite, Night Rebel book two, so I am neglecting both my blog and my inbox. If I owe you an email (and I owe LOTS of you emails) I'm sorry and I'll get to it as soon as I can.
However, in the interim, I have a new newsletter link to share with all of you. Yes, I know - why should you care? Because as a thank-you to my newsletter subscribers, I will be sharing Chapter 3 of Wicked Bite EXCLUSIVELY with them in the next two weeks. So, once again, everyone who signs up for my new newsletter now - or who is already signed up for my newsletter, and you might want to double-check because last year's GDPR compliance requirement purged a LOT of you - will get Chapter 3 of Wicked Bite in two weeks verses in a couple months.
