That's not a dog, baby!
Hi, all! If you didn't read my last post, you might not realize that my recent blog silence has been because I am feverishly trying to finish writing The Brightest Embers, the third and final book in the Broken Destiny series. Shameless side note: book two, The Sweetest Burn, releases on June 27th, so don't forget to mark your calendars!
Anyway, if all goes well, the book will be finished this month, so it's all hands ondeck keyboard until then. In the meantime, sorry for the cobwebs on the blog. At least it means good productivity, right?
However, how could I leave you with nothing but excuses for why I'm not blogging more? I couldn't! Therefore, I give you this hilarious text exchange between a husband and wife. Apparently, the wife is a bit of a practical joker and thought it would be fun to psyche her husband out by pretending that she'd adopted a new "dog." However, as you can see below, this is no ordinary dog ;).
I especially got a kick out of this exchange because from childhood, I have brought home many an unusual animal. There was the chipmunk I thought I could keep hidden in my room as a new pet, and who made his appearance known to my father by jumping onto the back of the toilet while my dad was peeing (I was SO grounded after that one!) Then there were the many stray dogs, abandoned baby birds or lost baby duckies I'd find in streets or other not-safe areas, so I'd take them home while I looked up a local wildlife refuge or no-kill shelter, all while hearing my husband say "We are NOT keeping them, Jeaniene!" because (1) at the time, we lived in a small apartment that didn't allow pets, plus we both worked crazy hours so we were rarely home, yet (2) left to my own devices, I probably would have tried to keep every one of them anyway ;). I also had, at one point, six ferrets, so I really cracked up about the husband's ferret comment in the text exchange below. Click on the picture to read and enjoy!

New 2017 appearances with author Ilona Andrews
Before I get into the new appearances, I have to give a big thank-you to Jennifer L. Armentrout and the staff for ApollyCon 2017. I had a great time this weekend, aside from starting to feel under the weather and thus missing the After Party festivities on Saturday night. However, I'm sure they were as fabulous as the rest of the convention. I look forward to seeing everyone again at ApollyCon 2018!
Next up, as the subject line states, my publisher has added some new, joint appearances on my 2017 schedule. Now, I'm not doing many events this year because I'm trying to get caught up on deadlines, but when I heard that these would be (1) close to where I live, and (2) with BFF Ilona Andrews, how could I say no? I couldn't, you'd agree! So, here are the three new events that I'm adding to my 2017 calendar:

Video snippet 4: how do I plan a series?
The fourth video snippet is now up! In this one, I talk about writing series books, including the Night Prince and other series, and how I decide how many novels should be in each one. The answer might surprise you (although if you know me, it might not ;).
Oh, and if you've watched the other videos and wondered about the opening graphics saying "Midnight Messages," my publisher had this neat idea that they'd set these videos to candlelight and I'd post them at midnight each night during release week. Here's the problem with that idea: unlike my vampire characters, I am NOT a night owl, so I'm asleep well before midnight. I'm also not very technologically-inclined, so while I know there *is* a function that would allow me to save these posts and have them automatically go live at midnight, I don't know how to do it. Hence, my posting these "Midnight Messages" in the morning :).

Video snippet 3 and how I can't count.
Hi, everyone! Below is the third video snippet of me, and according to what I wrote in the previous two posts, it should be the last one, but it isn't. Why? I can't count, or my memory sucks. Probably both.
In all honesty, I was nervous about doing the live video chat that took place right before these were shot. In my anxiety over worrying that I might inadvertently blurt out a spoiler that ruins the book for readers, or drop an F-bomb, or just start uncontrollably babbling gibberish like actor Steve Carell did in Bruce Almighty (you never know, people! ;)) I forgot exactly how many follow-up questions I answered in the post-live-chat videos.

Here's the second video snippet where I talk a little about what readers can expect in INTO THE FIRE, the final Night Prince novel. I open with the scintillating line of "A lot happens in this book!" *eye roll* This is why my job is writing instead of public speaking, people. I can edit what I write to make it sound more interesting. How I would love to have a magic edit button for what I say in public or on video, but alas. In good news, you can play a drinking game based on all the times I say "uh" or "um," so get your favorite bottle ready before you hit play! ;)

Video snippet 1 on INTO THE FIRE
Some of you might remember that I did a live video chat recently where I took reader questions about my books, writing, characters, etc. After the chat, I also had three video snippets shot where I talk a little more about INTO THE FIRE, Vlad, Leila, and what's in store for them specifically. Here is the first video, where I talk about the status of Vlad and Leila's relationship at the start of INTO THE FIRE, and what they're up against.
Oh, and if you've never heard me speak before, here's a disclaimer (or warning, heh): my voice is high-pitched, I repeat myself a lot, I get off topic, and I look away/shake my head when I'm trying to get back on topic...or remember what the hell it is that I'm supposed to be talking about in the first place. So, if you've had a mental image of me as poised, polished, and/or articulate, all with a smooth, lovely voice...be prepared to have that image shattered by the cruel hammer of reality ;).
