My 2018 Project Report

Writing annual and monthly project reports was a really beneficial practice for me last year. I have found that going through this process helps me see how well I aligned my time with my goals for the year.

I’m breaking down this report into three parts:

How I spent my time The progress I made towards my annual goals What to replicate, eliminate, and continue in 2019 How I Spent My Time in 2018

Daily Blog Burnout

It was bound to happen.

I have posted something new to this Daily Learning Log every day since November 1, 2017. That is nine months straight without missing a day.

First, let’s look at the negative:

I consistently spend more time on this daily blog than any other project other than email (see my monthly project reports). I get almost no website traffic to these posts (other than the time Gary Vaynerchuk retweeted an article I wrote about his Instagram strategy). The posts focus mostly on wr...

Don’t Wait for Ideal Circumstances to Write (A Writing Lesson from E. B. White)

I really needed to read this quote this week from E. B. White:

I’m able to work fairly well among ordinary distractions. My house has a living room that is at the core of everything that goes on: it is a passageway to the cellar, to the kitchen, to the closet where the phone lives. There’s a lot of traffic. But it’s a bright, cheerful room, and I often use it as a room to write in, despite the carnival that is going on all around me.

In consequence, the members of my household never pay the s...
