Excerpt from Chapter 6 of To Be Heard: A story about Willaimsburg Brooklyn.

“It’s wonderful Belgium beer made from sour cherries. It reminds me of that sour candy War Heads. Do you remember those?” We all nodded unsurely, wanting to agree with everything Delbert suggested. He had that infectious quality. “I do love adult beverages that take me back to child-like nostalgia. I think it’s only right.” He told us all about the bar, the beers, and the people that I just explained. Delbert told us he came to Spuyten Duyvil every day. He told us about the one woman that was always around the bar waiting to get laid by men who could care less about such life pleasures. The woman changed here and there, but was always the same situation.

Connor was notorious for his anything-will-do standards when it came to sleeping with women. “So you’re saying there is always a woman in here that is ready and no one takes advantage of?”

“Oh no. I almost always go home with them, but it’s just because I like the idea of waking up in a strange place.” Delbert said. That statement stuck with me, as did so many of the thoughts that left Delbert’s mouth. The idea of waking up in a strange place.

Exceprt from Chapter 3 of To Be Heard

“That’s how the lower east side immigrants did it. When the Williamsburg Bridge was completed around 1903, this became the most populated neighborhood in the country. The Polish and the Jewish put their possessions on their backs and walked them across the bridge, just like you.”

“My neighborhood was all Chinese and blacks.”

“What part did you live?”

“It’s hard to say, lower east side I suppose, but not really. It was at Market and Madison, right under the Manhattan Bridge.”

“Oh CHUMBLES, that is a weird area.”

“What’s CHUMBLES?”

“CHinatown-Under-Manhattan-Bridge-Lower-East-Side.”

Excerpt from Chapter 4, To Be Heard: A story about Williamsburg, Brooklyn

We took over Delancey Street and then the automobile side of the Williamsburg Bridge. Then the thousands of riders got to Bedford and Morton where Foxcroft took his last breath. The streets all around were gridlocked. Many of the automobiles began honking the horns. Abe on the megaphone started the chant, “Our streets.” Everyone joined in until the honking ceased.

Sometimes the right person has to die in order for the greater cause to live on. Sometimes that’s just how life works. These people cared, cared about what Foxcroft represented, because he represented the best version of what they were. This was an important moment in our short history. Brooklyn came to a halt as we chanted, as we cried. The police sirens wailed as we chanted, as we cried. We would be heard above all these obstacles that represented the opposite of the better good. Our revolution had a heart. It had an identity. We existed. We existed together and whatever tag they wanted to put on us would be just fine, because no matter the title it was still us. It was still we.
