My first really happy memories were after my parents moved to Paris in 1966, when I was eight. I could speak French fluently after 6 months. The city of lights became a giant playground for me. I bombed all over the city in the metro and on the bus to see movies! My father was a Yale graduate. He wanted his son Marc to follow in his footsteps and he reasoned that in order for me to be accepted at Yale, I would need a mastery of the English language and a really good score on the SAT. That was not possible in France or America (too far). I would have to go to one of England’s finest boarding schools. In school there, I studied French, English and Art. After living in Paris for five years, things did not go well. By the time I was done, yes, ...more

To refuse the invitation would lead to the horror of annihilating all relationship connections of recognition , communication, affection and love between that person and his loved ones and being separated from Love and Life and all that's good forever and ever.(less)

The truth is it's more stretched out then blocked. Getting back into reading what I wrote really helps. I Feel The Wonder of it all again and the excitement and the reason I wrote to start with. That helps me get back into the flow.
If it is a certain Passage that I can't seem to write I say to myself, "When one door closes, another one opens." I usually end up working on another part of the book. By the time I am done, I am very grateful that I was 'blocked,' because I wrote something really good that needed to be there in that spot.(less)

“To those who remember what the world has forgotten.
To the children who listen to the whispers beneath their
feet. You are the ones who carry the light into the
darkness.”
Marc Swift

“As cliche as this sounds, no one is going to live your life for you. You owe it to yourself to pay attention to what makes you happy and to do it. You have to trust your inner barometer of pleasure, and tune your life to that.”
Joshua David Swift

“Life is a gift. We don't earn it. We don't own it. Learn to be thankful for the time that you have.”
Joshua David Swift, The Coolness of Josh: Expanded 10th Anniversary Edition

“The present moment is
inseparable from life.
I want the present moment
to be my friend. I want
to be friends with anyone
I encounter now.
I want to be friends with Life.
This is a decision I am willing
to make again and again.
It's one I want to and will
make every chance I get.
Ask: what's my relationship with
Life?”
Joshua David Swift, The Coolness of Josh: Expanded 10th Anniversary Edition

“Kids are supposed to relax on vacations, and enjoy themselves, not sitting in the back seat of a car making peace with death and gripping a rosary because Mom is playing chicken with oncoming cars in the mountains.”
Joshua David Swift, The Coolness of Josh: Expanded 10th Anniversary Edition
