THE BITTER TRUTH ABOUT ASPARTAME AND NEOTAME"Aspartame/Neotame - the most dangerous substances in our food supply today." - Mary Nash Stoddard [Founder ACSN & Pilot Hotline since 1987-present]
Illegal Actions Gained FDA Approval:
FDA approved the new genetically engineered molecule in 1974, following a spate of criminal acts committed by G.D. Searle pharmaceutical employees and contractors. That approval was rescinded before aspartame got to market, because it was revealed a component of aspartame [diketopiperazine] caused brain tumors. Tests were "falsified." Second approval occurred in 1981 under President Reagan's new FDA Director, Dr. Arthur H. Hayes. In 1983, Hayes' office approved the new molecule for aqueous solution [soft drinks, etc.] and three months later, Dr. Hayes left government, went to work for the NutraSweet public relations firm, Burson Marsteller for $1,000 a day. Hayes continued to craftily dodged all media requests for interviews on the topic. Hayes lost his battle with Leukemia (oft-reported to be Aspartame related blood cancer,) in 2010. His daughter, also a staunch supporter of Aspartame in Europe, died the same year of another Aspartame-related Cancer of the Pancreas. Many government officials connected with these sweeteners have defected - going to work for the industry whose products they were entrusted to approve or reject.
In the laboratory, aspartame produced:
o Brain Tumors o Breast Tumors o Uterine Tumors o Pancreatic Tumors o Seizures o Deaths
These went unreported, as did the deaths and seizures of other animals in the original tests. Tumors were removed then animals put back in test as tumor free, animals who died were brought back to life on paper when results officially submitted by G.D. Searle pharmaceutical to FDA.
Aspartame changes DNA:In tests, the third generation of pups born to animals fed aspartic acid [component of aspartame] were born: 1) Morbidly obese and 2) Sexually Dysfunctional Components of aspartame and its breakdown products can adversely affect the brains and central nervous systems of children and adults who consume it.
"When you harm the brain, you harm the very expression of one's self." - Peter Breggin, M.D. [Psychiatrist - Bethesda, MD]
Reported psychological symptoms:
o Suicidal Depressions o Panic Attacks and Anxiety [PAD] - Manias o Sleep Disorders o Severe Mood Disorders [rages, mood swings] o Brain Chemical Imbalance o Brain Wave Malfunctions [shows up in EEGs] o Personality Disorders o Hallucinations o Aberrant Behaviors
Medicine In Our Food? Aspartame Components & Breakdown Products:
Phenylalanine 50% - Lowers the seizure threshold. Causes mental retardation in some. Blocks production of serotonin [key neurotransmitter which controls: Moods / Sleep Patterns / Satiety ] Cultured in e-coli bacteria in the lab.
Aspartic Acid 40% - Caused lesions or holes in the brains of lab animals. Neuroexcitatory [excites brain cells to death] amino acid. Causes motor-neuronal disorders in studies.
Methanol 10% - Also known as "methyl alcohol", "moonshine", "Sterno." Damages the liver and eye. Two teaspoons can be lethal to humans. [Not processed the same in humans and animals, so lab tests do not show full impact of toxicity] Breaks down into formaldehyde [embalming fluid] and formic acid [venom in insect stings] at temperatures exceeding 86 degrees Fahrenheit. [Body temperature is 98.6 F] Implicated in birth defects and fetal alcohol syndrome in newborn infants. As a constituent of other foods in nature, it is found in combination with ethyl alcohol, which counteracts or neutralizes the toxic affects of methanol as it is metabolized by the body. There is no ethyl alcohol in aspartame, therefore methanol in aspartame is in "free form" and is immediately absorbed into the bloodstream. For every molecule of aspartame, there is a molecule of methanol released. Classic signs of methanol poisoning include: lethargy, confusion, leg cramps, back pain, severe headache, abdominal pain, slurred speech, fainting, visual loss/blindness, labored breathing.
Diketopiperazine [DKP] - Caused brain tumors in laboratory tests. Thirteen out of 320 lab animals developed brain tumors in testing. Aspartame breakdown products cross the blood brain barrier to damage the brain.
Aspartame is known to exacerbate or trigger onset of the following medical conditions:
o Epilepsy o Parkinson's o Alzheimer's o Multiple Sclerosis o Chronic Fatigue Syn. o Lymphoma o Fibromyalgia / Eosinophilia Myalgia o Mental Retardation / Birth Defects o Diabetes / Hypoglycemia o Graves Disease o Heart Disease o Lung Disease o Liver Disease o Kidney Disease o Brain Tumors [astrocytoma/glioblastoma] o Pancreatic Disease o Kidney / Adrenal Disease o Arthritis o Blindness o Tinnitus o PMS o Carpal Tunnel o Lyme Disease o Muniere's Disease o Other: Rare / Hard to diagnose disorders
[Aspartame has been called a "systemic" toxin - which means it may virtually adversely affect the function of every organ of the body. The effects are "cumulative" and do not show up in short term testing.]
Aspartame and the Media: 1990, The Guardian [London newspaper] was sued for publishing headline story - "NutraSweet Faked Tests to Get Sweetener Approved." Later settled out of court. NutraSweet sent intimidating press releases to all U.S. media warning they were suing.
Documented instances are on record where the manufacturers of aspartame, threatened to sue and/or withdraw advertising dollars, from media. Health care professionals, scientists and medical schools have been "bribed" or intimidated into silence.
Aspartame and Flying Safety:Many military, general aviation and commercial airline pilots have lost medical certification to fly based on seizures which occurred while they were ingesting aspartame. Grand mal seizures have been reported in flight in the cockpits of commercial airliners. A pilots' hotline in Dallas,TX was established by ACSN, in 1988 for the anonymous reporting of adverse reactions and safety-of-flight incidents. USAF Flying Safety magazine published warnings re: aspartame use by pilots. Pilot's publications around the globe have warned readers. The FAA will not send out an official memo - because the FDA refuses to recall aspartame as a safety hazard to consumers. Is aspartame the unacknowledged "terrorist" in every cockpit on every flight?
Legal:
ACSN co-founders Turner & Stoddard have both qualified in court as medical Expert Witnesses. Many consumer lawsuits have been dropped or settled out of court since the mid-eighties. The Washington D.C. Supreme Court refused to hear a case brought against the FDA by James Turner, Esq. Aspartame is illegal because it violated The Delaney Clause, which states no substance can be approved that is shown to cause cancer.
In 1995, a stealth law crept across the land, which made it illegal to say anything disparaging about a perishable food product -example: yogurt sweetened with aspartame. Oprah was later sued under this law. [Agricultural Defamation Act]
In 1985, G.D. Searle and NutraSweet Co. became wholly-owned subsidiaries of Monsanto Chemical in St. Louis. Controversial Supreme Court Judge, Clarence Thomas is a former Monsanto attorney.
Monsanto sold their sweetener divisions to current owner, the J.W. Childs Partnership.
1998, Monsanto applied for FDA approval for a monster molecule, "based on the aspartame formula" with one addition: 3-dimethylbutyl [listed on EPA's most hazardous chemical list]. Thus, Neotame becomes 13,000 times sweeter than sugar.
July 5, 2002 - Neotame, Monsanto's super bio-manipulated molecule [newest fake sweetener] was approved by FDA over formally registered objections of the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network and others. Long term effects on humans are unknown.
Aspartame is in over-the-counter drugs like: Tums, Pepsid AC, Metamucil, Alka Seltzer Plus, tooth whiteners, breath mints/strips and more.
Diabetes and Aspartame / Neotame:
Diabetics are most insidiously harmed , because they are told aspartame is their "life line" to good health, when, in fact, just the opposite is true. Remember, aspartame caused pancreatic tumors in the lab. A diabetic may see the real life effects of aspartame on blood sugar by performing this simple test with a finger-stick test kit:
o Confirm blood sugar levels to be well within normal limits. If they are, then continue. Drink 2-3 cans [or the bottled equivalent] of Diet Soda containing aspartame, without stopping. Then, begin to retest for blood sugar level readings approximately one hour later. In this way, the adverse effects on blood sugar levels may be proven. This test is NOT recommended for anyone except individuals who already drink more than 2 diet drinks per day.
The American Diabetic Association and The American Dietetic Association [Registered Dietitians] have been "bought out" by the sweetener manufacturers. [ACSN has proof!]
Parents the FDA does not protect your children.Greed and avarice have made government officials, industry and mainstream science, turn a deaf ear to the truth. Children are at least 4 times more susceptible to aspartame toxicity because of the developing central nervous system. Read labels. If it says:"phenylalanine" don't buy it. Insist your child's pediatric medical records contain this warning - "Never prescribe any medications containing phenylalanine [always present in aspartame and neotame]." Aspartame is a multi-billion dollar a year industry in more than 7,000 food products, chewing gums, children's antibiotics and meds, children's vitamins and pain medications for kids. In the lab, aspartame caused tragic birth defects.
Action Agenda:
o Copy and distribute this Fact Sheet to everyone. o Post this brochure on the Internet. o Tell everyone about this problem. o Ask the next 5 people you see using aspartame if they have had any of the symptoms. o Get off the substance for a period of 4-6 weeks to see your physical and mental condition improve. o If you have sought medical treatment for any of these symptoms and you are/were an aspartame user - have your doctor enter into your official medical record that you believe aspartame may have caused some or all of your symptoms and that you are ceasing use of the sweetener and want to be "monitored" by your health care team as you get better. Very important. o Join over 10,000 concerned consumer members of Aspartame Consumer Safety Network worldwide who are fighting this battle to educate the consuming public about artificial sweeteners that masquerade as "natural." o Take all aspartame products back to the store and exchange them for healthy "real" food. This sends a message back to the manufacturer that we will no longer tolerate neurotoxins in our foods and children's items. Register a powerful complaint where it counts. o Write letters to the FDA and food manufacturers who use aspartame. Copy the editor of your local newspaper, stating your displeasure about the conspiracy of silence and illicit cover up of the facts by government and industry. The tobacco industry got away with it far too long. Let us learn a lesson from that and vow not to repeat mistakes that let them get away with it. The "real villains" in today's society are those who poison our food supply and that of our children - for profit. ____________________________________ Published by:Aspartame Consumer Safety NetworkMary Nash Stoddard, Founder and President Mary Nash Stoddardmarystod@airmail.net

STATEMENT TO PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL ON FOOD SAFETY - MARY NASH STODDARD

Aspartame Consumer Safety Network to:
President's Council on Food Safety Hearing
December 8, 1998
Dallas, Texas
The Aspartame Consumer Safety Network is a coalition of consumers and health care professionals [over 10,000 strong] around the world who have a common concern. That concern is for the safety of our food supply and the health of those who consume it. We are specifically concerned that after several decades of coverup regarding the health and safety effects of the controversial artificial sweetener, aspartame [produced primarily by the NutraSweet Kelco Co. of Deerfield IL, a subsidiary of Monsanto Chemical and others].
Our network produces a 200 page Toxicology Sourcebook [Deadly Deception - Story of Aspartame] to support our allegations that this substance is unsafe for human consumption in our food supply. It contains numerous independent studies showing harm – ranging from birth defects to brain tumors.
In 1987 I presented testimony to a Senate Committee looking into the safety of aspartame in Washington D.C. At that time there was more than enough evidence to indict this sweetener and remove it from the marketplace because of health concerns [as it was following its first approval in 1974 because of the brain tumor issue]. Today, we can show even more proof in the thousands of adverse reactions reported to the Food and Drug Administration and others. Seventy-eight percent of all complaints to the FDA are about adverse reactions to aspartame
Today, I ask you to reconsider the decision to continue to label safe that which some scientists have proven in the laboratory to be a neurotoxin and carcinogen. Please do the right thing and keep our food supply free of harmful chemical agents.
Fake foods, whether they be fake fat, fake sugar or otherwise are not natural and carry with them the potential for great harm. Chemical sweeteners have no place in our lives if we wish to maintain maximum good health. Some studies show they actually encourage weight gain. Many healthy truly natural alternatives exist for use as sweeteners.
Our organization takes the stand that carcinogens such as aspartame [aka NutraSweet, Equal etc.] are potentially toxic and do not belong in our food supply, and we remain dedicated to educating others as to these hazards. In the lab, animals died. Others developed brain tumors, pancreatic tumors, uterine tumors and mammary [breast tumors. This also includes the new sweetener known as Neotame, which is waiting approval from the FDA. Neotame is 8000 times sweeter than sugar and will be produced by Monsanto's NutraSweet Kelco Co. It has virtually the same formula as aspartame with dimethylbutyl [listed on the EPA list of hazardous chemicals] added.

RELATED PRESS RELEASE:
Dallas – December 8 – ACSN — Dallas-based Epidemiologist, Mary Nash Stoddard, a founder of the world's burgeoning anti-aspartame movement in 1987, will deliver findings regarding thousands of adverse reactions to the world's most controversial sweeteners at a special Hearing of the President's Council on Food Safety in Dallas today. The Aspartame Consumer Safety Network operates an adverse reaction hotline and database and is the clearinghouse for information on the sweetener.
Representing a constituency of over 10,000 concerned consumers, Stoddard calls for an immediate 'Moratorium' on all aspartame sweeteners until their absolute safety can be assured by independent research. A precedent for this type of action was set in 1992 when the Food and Drug Administration called a 'Moratorium' on silicone breast implants. Ms. Stoddard first testified to the U.S. Senate in November, 1987. She later submitted formal petitions objecting to the FDA's support of the sweetener asking that aspartame be recalled and re-tested as a drug, which is how it was discovered.
Seizures, loss of vision, vertigo, suicidal depressions, heart problems, etc. are routinely reported. Reactions in many consumers are reported to cause bizarre psychological symptoms as well. In tests, lab animals developed: Brain Tumors-Pancreatic Tumors-Breast Tumors and Uterine Tumors. These were covered up. Federal Prosecutor, Samuel Skinner was bringing criminal charges against the makers of aspartame [G.D. Searle, now a subsidiary of Monsanto Chemical Co.], but excused himself at the last minute – defecting to Searle's law firm, Sidley & Austin. The lawsuit was then dropped by the Federal Prosecutor's Office.
Aspartame [aka NutraSweet/Equal] is 10% methanol (wood alcohol) by weight and breaks down further in heat and in the body into: formaldehyde, formic acid and a brain tumor agent, DKP. ###

STATEMENT OF HON. MARY NASH STODDARD AT WASHINGTON BRAIN TUMOR PRESS CONFERENCE (Nov. 1996)
My name is: Mary Nash Stoddard. Today I speak as the Founder of the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network. Our organization consists of thousands of concerned consumers and has links to health care professionals and scientists around the world. It was founded in 1987, based on my personal experience with a child. As the parents in the movie, "Lorenzo's Oil", I searched to find the truth. Because my background was in media, not in science, I conducted my search as an investigative reporter might. And, also because I am the widow of a wonderful husband who was diagnosed with Brain Cancer Oct. 9, 1984 and died three months later in 1985 at age 42. I learned that along with finding "the truth" connecting Brain Cancers with Aspartame consumption, came a compelling sense of responsibility to share it with others. Therefore, I've worked daily, on a voluntary basis, with individuals seeking help for their serious health problems. The adverse reaction reports pour in to our Dallas office via mail, email and telephone from all over the world. Many people report symptoms that mimic common diseases of our time which seem to have reached epidemic proportions since the advent of Aspartame, such as: MS; Lupus; Epilepsy; Chronic Fatigue; Lyme Disease; Alzheimer's; Lou Gehrig's Disease; Graves Disease; Post Polio Syndrome; Fibromyalgia, etc. Even Gulf War Syndrome, which I seemed to suffer from in 1985, while consuming Aspartame. I had all the reported symptoms. All these conditions usually diminish or completely disappear when Aspartame sweeteners (better known in the U.S. as NutraSweet and Equal) are eliminated from the diet for a period of 2-4 weeks. Extremely disturbing, and pertinent today, are reports of severe neurological symptoms. These include: aggression, suicidal depressions, aberrant behaviors, unexplained sleep disorders and extreme mood swings.
We are here today to discuss the Brain Tumor issue. Yes, ACSN has reports of Brain Tumors in our files. One from an airline pilot - a heavy user of the sweetener - who suffered a rare form of Brain Tumor. After neurosurgery, he has lost the use of one hand and "flies a desk" for the airline.
Another, amazingly, came from a public liaison officer with the FDA (who did not wish to be identified for obvious reasons). Her daughter developed a Brain Tumor during a concentrated period of heavy dieting to fit into a tight wedding dress. She was left unable to perform as a concert pianist, and her life wilI never again be the same. She was using lots of Aspartame sugarfree products to help her lose weight.
In November, 1987, I was invited to give testimony to Senator Metzenbaum's Committee, holding their third hearing on the safety of Aspartame. While in Washington, I met Major Michael Collings, an outstanding F-16 pilot in the Air Force. During a private conversation, he asked, "Why did you start a consumer group? Do you know what you're up against?" And, finally, "Are you crazy?" (Or words to that effect.) I answered "No." to the last question, and told him I wanted to help other parents understand what aspartame can do to children. He said, "Don't stop there. Help us too. Pilots are losing their careers and maybe even their lives because we are not being told the truth." (Major Collings had just lost his medical certificate after suffering a grand mal seizure as my child had done.)
James Turner and I met with Chief Deputy Flight Surgeon, Dr. Jon Jordan at his Washington FAA Headquarters, presenting our concerns and looking for solutions for pilots. One of the answers was to establish a pilot hotline for the purpose of taking adverse reactions confidentially. The FAA, we were told, could not recall a drug or go against FDA findings that it was safe enough to approve in 1981. Since then, based on our work, the US Air Force published two warnings in their official Flying Safety magazine in 1992. We believe the flying public and pilots have a right to know we have collected several reports of grand mal seizures in the cockpit in flight on commercial airlines.
Based on a review of thousands of case histories in our files, we have concluded aspartame is indeed harming people and destroying lives. Whether we use it or not, each of us suffers economically. In skyrocketing health care costs and higher insurance premiums, from loss of productivity in the workplace and compensations for disabilities, sometimes caused by Aspartame.
As is well-documented now, a defensive tobacco industry has stacks of studies that prove "scientifically" how their product cannot be implicated as the cause of: heart attacks, strokes, cancers and deaths. Now, a multi-billion dollar artificial sweetener industry does the same. Aspartame symptoms (such as those from smoking) do not show up in short term testing. These are parallel issues. Our message has been referred to in print as "alarmist" by both Dr. Robert Moser, NutraSweet's senior medical advisor and Rich Nelson, head of public relations. That's their job. Our job is proving them wrong. They also referred to me as a "Nice lady, but very misguided!" in another interview.
As Founder and Executive Director of the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network, I speak for literally thousands of consumers around the world who urge the FDA to call an immediate moratorium on the sale of the chemical sweetener, Aspartame. In the words of our late friend and former FDA Toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross, "We no longer have dead laboratory animals. We have live victims." -- Hon. Mary Nash Stoddard/author Deadly Deception Story of Aspartame (Odenwald Press 1998)"

THE BITTER TRUTH ABOUT ASPARTAME AND NEOTAME "Aspartame/Neotame - the most dangerous substances in our food supply today." - Mary Nash Stoddard [Founder ACSN & Pilot Hotline]
Illegal Operations and FDA Approval
FDA approved aspartame [NutraSweet/Equal/Canderal] a new, bio-genetically engineered molecule in 1974, following a spate of criminal acts committed by G.D.
• Copy and distribute this Fact Sheet to everyone. • Post this brochure on the Internet. • Tell everyone about this problem. • Ask the next 5 people you see using aspartame if they have had any of the symptoms. • Get off the substance for a period of 4-6 weeks to see your physical and mental condition improve. • If you have sought medical treatment for any of these symptoms and you are/were an aspartame user - have your doctor enter into your official medical record that you believe aspartame may have caused some or all of your symptoms and that you are ceasing use of the sweetener and want to be "monitored" by your health care team as you get better. Very important. • Join over 10,000 concerned consumer members of Aspartame Consumer Safety Networkworldwide who are fighting this battle to educate the consuming public about artificial sweeteners that masquerade as "natural." • Take all aspartame products back to the store and exchange them for healthy "real" food. This sends a message back to the manufacturer that we will no longer tolerate neurotoxins in our foods and children's items. Register a powerful complaint where it counts. • Write letters to the FDA and food manufacturers who use aspartame. Copy the editor of your local newspaper, stating your displeasure about the conspiracy of silence and illicit cover up of the facts by government and industry. The tobacco industry got away with it far too long. Let us learn a lesson from that and vow to not repeat mistakes that let them get away with it. The "real villains" in today's society are those who poison our food supply and that of our children - for profit. ____________________________________ Published by:Aspartame Consumer Safety Network Mary Nash Stoddard, Founder and President www.aspartamesafety.comBlog: Stoddards POVTwitter: marystodFacebook: Mary Nash StoddardGoogle: Mary_Nash_StoddardAspartame Video Collection: The Organic View Radio Show email: marystod@airmail.net ____________________________________ Books / Videos [send a $30 donation per item ordered to ACSN at above address] :

The world owes Dr. John Olney, of Washington University Medical School of Psychiatry, in Saint Louis, MO, a huge debt of gratitude. This soft spoken scientist and researcher , with James Turner, Esq., first uncovered the shocking unreported research study results on aspartame, tucked away in a dismal warehouse. Dr. Olney, the world expert on amino acids, cares more about the truth than popularity with his peers and government officials. We salute Dr. Olney for his efforts and sacrifices on our behalf.

REPORTED ASPARTAME TOXICITY EFFECTS TO FDA & ASPARTAME CONSUMER SAFETY NETWORK
Sent: Sunday, January 12, 2003 11:12 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket # 02P-0317 Recall Aspartame as a Neurotoxic Drug: File #4: Reported Aspartame Toxicity Reactions Subject: Docket # 02P-0317 To: FDA Dockets Submittal
Q. What are the reported reactions to aspartame ingestion? How often are such effects seen?
Answer We will limit our discussion in this FAQ to reported toxicity reactions to aspartame ingestion. Controlled studies showing problems with aspartame ingestion will be discussed in another FAQ.
Toxicity reactions to aspartame can be divided into three types: 1. Acute toxicity reactions occuring within 48 hours of ingestion of an aspartame-containing product. 2. Chronic toxicity effects occuring anywhere from several days of use to appearing a number of years (i.e., 1-20+ years) after the beginning of aspartame use. 3. Potential toxicity effects that would be nearly impossible for the user to recognize the link to aspartame. In an epidemiological survey which appeared in the Journal of Applied Nutrition (Roberts 1988), 551 persons who have reported toxicity effects from aspartame ingestion were surveyed. The adverse effects found cover a subset of reported acute and chronic toxicity effects from aspartame. What follows is a listing of the adverse health effects which were found.

Many pilots appear to be particularly susceptible to the effects of aspartame ingestion. They have reported numerous serious toxicity effects including grand mal seizures in the cockpit (Stoddard 1995). Nearly 1,000 cases of pilot reactions have been reported to the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network Pilot Hotline (Stoddard 1995). This susceptibility may be related to ingesting methanol at altitude as suggested in a letter from Dr. Phil Moskal, Professor of Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Pathology, Chairman of the Department of Pathology, Director of Public Health Laboratories (Moskal 1990), or it may simply be that some pilots tend to ingest large quantities of aspartame during a flight. Whatever the case, numerous warnings about aspartame dangers have appeared in piloting journals including:
The Aviation Consumer (1988),
Aviation Medical Bulletin (1988),
Pacific Flyer (1988),
CAA General Aviation (1989),
Aviation Safety Digest (1989),
General Aviation News (1989),
Plane & Pilot (1990),
Canadian General Aviation News (1990),
National Business Aircraft Association Digest (NBAA Digest 1993),
International Council of Air Shows (ICAS 1995), and Pacific Flyer (1995).
Both the U.S. Air Force's magazine "Flying Safety" and the U.S. Navy's magazine, "Navy Physiology" published articles warning about the many dangers of aspartame including the cumulative deleterious effects of methanol and the greater likelihood of birth defects.
The articles note that the ingestion of aspartame may make pilots more susceptible to seizures and vertigo (US Air Force 1992). Countless other toxicity effects have been reported to the FDA (DHHS 1995), other independent organizations (Stoddard 1995), and independent scientists (e.g., 80 cases of seizures were reported to Dr. Richard Wurtman, Food (1986)).
Frequently, aspartame toxicity is misdiagnosed as a specific disease. This has yet to be reported in the scientific literature, yet it has been reported countless times to independent organizations and scientists (Stoddard 1995). In other cases, it has been reported that chronic aspartame ingestion has triggered or worsened certain chronic illnesses. Nearly 100% of the time, the patient and physician assume that these worsening conditions are simply a normal progression of the illness. Sometimes that may be the case, but many times it is chronic aspartame poisoning. According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following list contains a selection of chronic illnesses which may be caused or worsened by the chronic, long-term ingestion of aspartame. (Stoddard 1995)*:
Brain tumors
Multiple sclerosis
Epilepsy
Chronic fatigue syndrome
Parkinson's Disease
Alzheimer's
Mental retardation
Lymphoma
Birth defects
Fibromyalgia
Diabetes
Arthritis (including Rheumatoid)
Chemical Sensitivities
Attention Deficit Disorder
*Note: In some cases such as MS, the severe symptoms mimic or exacerbate the illness, but do not cause the disease.
Also, please note that this is an incomplete list. Clearly, ingestion of a very slow poison (as discussed in other FAQs) is not beneficial to anyone who has a chronic illness.
Finally, potential toxicity effects from aspartame including brain cancer (as seen in pre-approval research) and effects on fetal brain and nervous system development will be discussed in other FAQs.
How often are such effects seen?
Until recently approximately 90% of aspartame sales were in the United States (Monsanto 1994). Other countries are now being inundated with aspartame, but it will be some time until they begin to feel the full effects of aspartame toxicity on the general population.
Since the U.S. has some history of significant use, we will limit the discussion to the frequency of effects in the U.S. There have been well over 7,000 aspartame toxicity reactions officially received by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration between 1982 (after aspartame was first approved) until 1995 (DHHS 1993, DHHS 1995). From this figure, we can estimate the number of actual toxicity reactions observed.
FDA officials believe that as little as 1% of the serious adverse drug reactions are reported to the FDA (Kessler 1993). Using a reported rate of 1%, we would estimate that there have been 700,000 recognized aspartame toxicity reactions in the U.S. since 1982. However, there are a number of significant adjustments that must be made before we can accept this estimate.
1. Most physicians are aware of the Adverse Reaction Monitoring System (ARMS) and are encouraged by the FDA to report serious adverse drug reactions (Kessler 1993).
2. Physicians are not encouraged by the FDA to report aspartame toxicity reactions to the FDA (Food 1995). The lay public is generally unaware of ARMS and much less likely to report adverse reactions to the FDA. Therefore, this would lower the estimated reporting rate below 1%. Let us make a small adjustment and estimate a 0.88% reporting rate.
3. It was pointed out by James Turner, Esq. in a letter to the then FDA Commissioner, Frank Young, that no program to monitor aspartame toxicity reactions was created until February 1984, two years after aspartame approval began (Turner 1984). This would probably add at least 1,200 reported reactions (probably much more), so that we should use 8,200 toxicity reaction reports.
In addition, a Freedom of Information act request determined that the regional FDA offices had been told that only "serious" complaints should be forwarded to the FDA headquarters (Turner 1984).
"Serious" complaints were complaints where the illness was severe enough to require the attention of a physician. Since this happened between 1984 (when the monitoring system began) and 1985, we can estimate an additional 300 toxicity reactions would have been reported for a total of 8,500.
3. In 1987, it was brought out at U.S. Congressional Hearings that the FDA had been transferring aspartame toxicity reaction calls to the AIDS Hotline (Stoddard 1987). In addition, it was reported by James Turner, Esq. of Community Nutrition Institute (CNI) and Mary Nash Stoddard of Aspartame Victims and Their Friends, that there were numerous cases of people calling the FDA to report toxicity reaction and they were told that there was no connection between aspartame and adverse reactions and no other information was taken by the FDA. While this may not effect the reporting rate after the start of 1988, it would significantly affect the reporting rate before that time. Let us make another small adjustment and estimate a 0.78% reporting rate.
4. Perhaps the biggest reduction in the reporting rate comes from the fact that Commissioner Kessler's estimated 1% reporting rate for adverse drug reactions involves only "serious" adverse reactions. The rate for reporting *all* drug reactions (if such reporting was done) would almost certainly be no more than 0.5%. Therefore, if we cut our current estimated reporting rate of 0.78% in half, the estimated reporting rate for *all* toxicity reactions to aspartame (including serious or mild) would be no more than 0.39%.
5. During the first couple of years that aspartame was on the market, there was publicity that would likely have increased the reporting rate. However, since the FDA did not have a monitoring system in place until February 1984, the estimated increased number of reports will not be that much. I will reduce the number of reports by 1,000 to 7,500 to take this into account.
6. We now have approximately 7,500 reports at an estimated reporting rate of 0.39%. This totals approximately 1.9 million *recognized* aspartame toxicity reactions in the U.S. between 1982 and 1995.
7. These reactions run anywhere from mild to very serious illnesses. It is very important to understand, however, that 1.9 million represents only those toxicity reactions that have been discovered by users and/or healthcare practitioners. Quite often, I encounter case histories were people suffered for a long time and did not make the connection. For example: "I have suffered from Migraines for years. As soon as I gave up Nutrasweet my migraines disappeared. All those Cat Scans, MRI's for nothing." "Since I last wrote my brother has been off nutrasweet since then. My brothers' lupus symptoms completely went away. My brother has been a physician for over 10 years. His doctor (a specialist) who has been treating him has seen the significant difference and wants to write a research paper on this .. my brothers physician has now started prescribing getting off nutrasweet for his other patients." Therefore, I believe that in addition to the estimated 1.9 million people in the U.S. who have recognized aspartame toxicity reactions in themselves (from serious to mild), there are many times that number who are suffering from some of the symptoms mentioned above and that they do not recognize that chronic aspartame use is the cause or at least a contributory factor. I would estimate that *at least* 7.6 million others are suffering from some symptoms related to aspartame use (many mild symptoms, but many serious ones as well) and do not recognize the connection. In addition to the estimated 1.9 million recognized reactions and 7.6 million unrecognized reactions in the U.S., it is very important to note that aspartame has been used in significant amounts in the U.S. for a relatively short time. A U.S. Department of Agriculture report noted that it wasn't until approximately 1987 that aspartame was used in significant amounts in the U.S. (USDA 1988). Therefore, aspartame had been used for only nine (9) years in signficant amounts through 1995. When one considers that the damage from aspartame is often silent and cumulative (much like chain-smoking cigarettes), one can see that a couple of generations of aspartame use might be disasterous! The FDA and NutraSweet have claimed that the number of reported adverse reactions have declined substantially since the mid- 1980s (Pauli 1995, Butchko 1994). In addition, the FDA recently claimed that the number of reported toxicity reactions for 1995 was only 11 (WSJ 1996)!
8. It is important to realize that during the mid-1970s the FDA was investigating wrong-doings of the aspartame manufacturer and stated the facts exactly as they found them: "[The manufacturer] lied and they didn't submit the real nature of their observations because had they done that it is more than likely that a great number of these studies would have been rejected simply for adequacy. What Searle did, they took great pains to camouflage these shortcomings of the study.
9. As I say filter and just present to the FDA what they wished the FDA to know and they did other terrible things.
10. For instance animals would develop tumors while they were under study. Well they would remove these tumors from the animals." [FDA Toxicologist and Task Force member, Dr. Andrian Gross (Wilson 1985)]
11. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, a number of key government and FDA officials left their jobs to work with companies related to the aspartame industry (GAO 1986). This included key FDA officials such as the head of the FDA Bureau of Foods becoming a Vice President of the National Drink Association and the FDA Commissioner becoming a high-paid consultant for the manufacturer's PR firm, Burson Marsteller (Gordon 1987).
After this period of time, there was no scientific evidence and no amount of serious toxicity reports that could get the FDA to seriously consider funding independent, properly-conducted (e.g., chronic exposure) research. That appearance of the FDA being under the total control of the manufacturer, Monsanto, continues to this day. I include these comments about the FDA to demonstrate why no independent scientist familiar with the aspartame issue takes statements from the FDA such as "11 reported reactions in 1995" seriously. There are many people, including myself who have received that many toxicity reaction reports in a single day during 1995.
The reality is that independent organizations have noted that aspartame toxicity reaction reports given to them have *increased* every year since the late 1980s (Stoddard 1995). It is also important to note that in mid-1995, the FDA admited that it had stopped recording aspartame toxicity reactions (Food 1995).
That may have something to do with why the numbers that the FDA reported to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ 1996) were so small! References Cited

Mary Nash Stoddardmarystod@airmail.netOTHER INGREDIENTS ALLOWED OR PROHIBITED IN PROCESSED ORGANIC PRODUCTS
November 23, 2011
MEMORANDUM FOR THE NATIONAL ORGANIC STANDARDS BOARD (NOSB)FROM: Miles McEvoy Deputy Administrator National Organic Program (NOP) SUBJECT: Request for Clarification of "Other Ingredients" in Processed Organic ProductsNovember 23, 2011 Revision – Supersedes November 15, 2011 Version
The Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) authorizes USDA to establish the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances. OFPA also grants the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) the authority to recommend adding materials to or removing materials from the National List. The National List identifies substances that may and may not be used in organic crop and livestock production. In general, synthetic substances are prohibited for use in organic production unless specifically allowed, and non-synthetic (natural) substances are allowed unless specifically prohibited. For handling, the National List includes the non-organic substances that may be used in or on processed organic products. OFPA requires that the National List contain an itemized list of each permitted synthetic substance, including its specific use and application. The NOP recognizes that additional clarity is needed regarding non-agricultural ingredients used in processed organic products and listed under § 205.605.
When used as a formulated product, some substances on the National List may contain additional ingredients in various categories, including, but not limited to, carriers, stabilizers, and preservatives. Such "other ingredients" are sometimes referred to as inert ingredients, excipients, or incidental additives. For organic crop and livestock production, these "other ingredients" are specifically outlined in the regulations. For example, each ingredient in a livestock input material (e.g. medication, pesticide, feed additive) must meet one of the following criteria:•Nonsynthetic (natural) substance which is not prohibited on § 205.604. •Allowed synthetic substances which is allowed on § 205.603. •Synthetic inert ingredient which is allowed on § 205.603(e), if listed on the Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) List 4-Inerts of Minimal Concern, and used in combination with allowed pesticide activeingredients. •Excipient, only for use in the manufacture of drugs used to treat organic livestock if the excipient meetsone of the following criteria: Identified by the FDA as Generally Regarded as Safe. Approved by the FDA as a food additive. Included in the FDA review and approval of a new animal drug application or new drug application.
Additionally, all agricultural ingredients listed in the ingredients list for feed additives and supplements must be organic.1400 Independence Avenue, S.W. Room 2646-South, STOP 0268 Washington, DC 20250-0201

For organic crop production, examples of products with multiple ingredients include blended fertilizers, pesticides with inert ingredients, and potting soil with wetting agents. However, each ingredient must meet one of the following criteria:• Nonsynthetic (natural) substance which is not prohibited on § 205.602. • Synthetic substance which is allowed on § 205.601. • Synthetic inert ingredient which is allowed on § 205.601(m), if listed on the Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) List 4-Inerts of Minimal Concern , and used in combination with allowed pesticide active ingredients. For passive pheromone dispensers, substances on EPA List 3-Inerts of Unknown Toxicity are also allowed.
Currently, the allowance of "other ingredients" in substances on the National List for use in processed organic products is unclear. Several certifying agents and members of the organic trade have asked the NOP to clarify which "other ingredients" are allowed. Since OFPA requires that each non-agricultural ingredient be specifically allowed, and because the National List doesn't specifically list "other ingredients" commonly found in formulated products, the NOP is requesting that the NOSB specify whether these "other ingredients" are allowed.
NOP Request to NOSBThe NOP is requesting that the NOSB develop a policy on "other ingredients" in § 205.605 substances that is comparable to the comprehensive policy for crop and livestock materials. From this point forward, the NOP is requesting that the NOSB consider the presence of any "other ingredients" as part of their review processes. As substances on the National List come up for sunset review, or as new petitions are considered, the NOP requests that NOSB clarify whether any restrictions are warranted for "other ingredients" in § 205.605 substances. Any third-party technical report that the NOP provides will include information on any "other ingredients" commonly found in the substance under review.
The NOP is requesting that the NOSB specify any allowed "other ingredients" in the background section of their recommendations for substances recommended for listing on § 205.605, so that these allowances are clear to the organic trade, certifying agents, and the NOP. Any "other ingredients" that are not listed on § 205.605, or that are not referenced in the background section of the recommendation, would not be allowed in formulations of substances on § 205.605 that are used in or on processed products labeled as "organic" or "made with organic (specified ingredients or food group(s))".
The NOP recognizes that the NOSB may want to address the subject further in the future with a comprehensive policy for "other ingredients" that may be included in permitted handling materials. Some questions that could be addressed in a future recommendation could include the following:
1. Should all agricultural ingredients that are "other ingredients" be organically produced? 2. Are synthetic preservatives allowed as "other ingredients?"
These steps will allow the NOP to clearly identify which formulated products are allowed under the processing section of the National List. Clear regulations will in turn allow certifying agents and the organic trade to consistently interpret these requirements. The NOP looks forward to working with the NOSB to continue to enhance the integrity of USDA organic products.

TESLA SOCIETY MAGAZINE COVER STORY - ASPARTAME & FLYING By Mary Nash Stoddard

By Mary Nash Stoddard and George Leighton
"Hello, is this the uh ….Aspartame Consumer Safety Network Hotline?"
"Yes, it is, how can I help you?"
"Someone put this article on the bulletin board in our pilot's lounge and it has your number on it. I want more information, but I also wanted to tell you what happened to me. I'm a pilot with (a major airline). Last year, I experienced a grand mal seizure before a trip. Several weeks before that, my jaw had started twitching. I was drinking a diet shake two times daily to lose weight. I had no medical problems before that. My doctor suggested it might be due to the Aspartame in the product, but we couldn't call it that because the FAA does not recognize Aspartame reactions in their regulations. At his suggestion, I quit using the product and have had no problems since."
"Yes, I know about the FAA's official position.. I have met with FAA flight surgeons in Washington, D.C. Off the record they acknowledged the problem but claim their hands are tied until the FDA addresses the issue. So, did you lose your medical as so many others have done?"
"I lost it, but my doctor figured that if we could call my seizure an alcohol-related problem, I could just go through an alcohol rehab clinic and that might do it. Turns out it did. I've never had a problem with alcohol, but we had to go through the motions so that I could keep my job. The Doctor even used some fancy syndrome name and it worked."
"I'm really glad you were able to keep your job. Many of your colleagues haven't been so lucky. I hear some pretty amazing stories from pilots and others on this hotline. Reports of grand mal seizures happening to the captain in flight on a major commercial airline and terrifying safety in flight incidents involving temporary loss of consciousness, vision problems and total disorientation. Not long ago, a call came in to me from a pilot who had a grand mal seizure and 'crashed' the simulator during his test. This event prompted a new flurry of activity among employees of that airline. They are now distributing our information about aspartame with a new fervor. You know, one reason the FAA gave us for not notifying all their pilots about this danger is because it has appeared in several flying magazines, and they tell me all the pilots already know about it."
Hotline callers laugh contemptuously at that piece of logic. It simply isn't true.
Adverse reaction reports on the pilot's hotline are treated as confidential unless permission is given to release names and information about case histories. Since the hotline began in 1988, we have received well over 600 pilot related calls. This is a problem of astronomical proportions with disastrous results if left unaddressed by the American public and the FAA. In the October 14, 1989 issue of The Palm Beach Post, Dr. H.J. Roberts wrote … "Several recent plane accidents underscore the need for further inquiry into a heretofore neglected cause of pilot and driver error: confusion and aberrant behavior caused by products containing aspartame (NutraSweet). For example, did the co-pilot who inadvertently hit the disengage button before the recent USAir jet accident, and then acted 'irrationally' ingest an aspartame diet soda or coffee sweetened with an aspartame tabletop sweetener? I have repeatedly pointed out these and related problems in many scientific articles and addresses over the past three years. They are based on personal observations and a nationwide study. My report on 157 persons with aspartame-induced confusion and memory loss was published last month. The subjects included trained pilots who developed these and other neurologic psychiatric features … including convulsions and visual problems."
The first pilot I met who had lost his medical certification to fly was USAF Major Michael Collings. I met him after hearing him testify at the third Senate Hearing on the safety of Aspartame. I spent time with him again when London's Thames TV flew us into Washington D.C. to tape a special documentary they were doing on the issue. Over coffee one day I asked him to relate more details of his case. I already knew how he traced the problems of tremors and seizures suffered from 1983 to 1985 directly to his patterns of NutraSweet consumption. When his duties took him to remote places where there was no diet soda or diet Kool Aid, he was free of the tremors, and whenever he resumed intake of artificially sweetened beverages, his tremors resumed, growing more severe, and culminating in a grand mal seizure that put him in the hospital and ended his career as a pilot. Collings' tremors and seizures ended on October 6, 1985, the day he quit ingesting NutraSweet. Michael told me how he had not once but twice turned down the invitation to become a member of the prestigious Thunderbirds.
They could not understand his decision, but he related to me that at the time, he could not fly 'wingtip to wingtip' with anyone. They will never know the real reason Major Collings rejected their offer … unless they read it here.
The next pilot I met who had lost his "medical" was Brownwood, Texas pilot, Charles King. He suffered symptoms similar to Major Collings', and like Collings, he only suffered them during his use of Aspartame products. The FAA took his anecdotal symptoms seriously enough to revoke his medical certificate and end his flying days for a few years. However, King fought the system until he miraculously got his license back in 1990. To date, his is our only real success story. We consider it a major breakthrough.
He hasn't lost his license, but he almost lost his life. After just two cups of NutraSweetened hot chocolate, pilot George E. Leighton experienced blurred vision so severe he was unable to read instruments on his panel and very narrowly avoided a tragic landing. Safely on the ground, he related his story to the co-workers in his office. Two of them recounted similar symptoms experienced after brief exposure to aspartame. He claims 'this makes Aspartame particularly frightening to pilots, since in a single pilot IFR, full workload situation, partial impairment of capability can be just as fatal as total impairment (unconsciousness).' Leighton has become somewhat of an Aspartame activist now, investigating suspicious incidents related to flying and attempts to raise the consciousness of the FAA and others about the issue. Recently he wrote this letter to the editor of the US Air Force Flying Safety magazine after they printed an Aspartame Alert to all Air Force pilots:
"I would particularly direct your attention to the potential altitude effects of the methanol contained in Aspartame. To my knowledge, there has been no investigation of its binding to the hemoglobin (like carbon monoxide), thereby inducing hypoxia as suggested by Dr. Phil Moskal. Perhaps your Air Force Flight Surgeons would be interested in pursuing this from a medical viewpoint. I do not have the resources to pursue such an investigation and the FAA is stonewalling the whole Aspartame issue. The FAA's inaction is very likely politically motivated.. As a General Aviation News article points out, Samuel Skinner the boss of the FAA as Secretary of Transportation at the time was formerly employed by NutraSweet's law firm, and Spotlight, April 6, 1992, reveals that his wife is presently employed by that firm. Later, as President Bush's Chief of Staff, Samuel Skinner was in an even more powerful political position with direct influence over all government agencies, including the FDA, the FAA, and your own DOD. Through his own past employment and his wife's present employment with NutraSweet's law firm, it would seem that NutraSweet had a pipeline directly to the top. It should be noted that without the 1977 direct intervention of Samuel Skinner (who was then U.S. Attorney for the Justice Department's Chicago office) and his associates, a grand jury would most certainly have indicted Searle/NutraSweet personnel for fraud and criminal behavior in concealing the deadly effects of the drug Aspartame from the FDA. The drug would never have been approved for use as a food additive and I would not now be writing this. I am continually appalled by the apparent indifference and inaction by various pilot-oriented organizations … FAA, AOPA, ALPA, and others … to the in-flight hazard posed by pilot's ingestion of diet drinks or other drinks laced with Aspartame (NutraSweet or Equal). In the Navy Physiology article, for example, they state: … 'Aspartame can increase the frequency of seizures … (susceptibility) to flicker vertigo or to flicker-induced epileptic activity. It means that ALL pilots are potential victims of sudden memory loss, dizziness during instrument flight (i.e. vertigo), and gradual loss of vision.'This certainly is a direct safety-of-flight item and should be dealt with as such. Instead, the Navy … ' offers a heads up to a potential problem.' Let me ask you a question. If you became aware of a component of every Air Force aircraft which was subject to sudden, catastrophic in-flight failure, would you simply write an innocuous 'heads up to pilots' at the end of an obscure article in your magazine? Of course not! You would take immediate emergency action to ground all aircraft until the safety-of-flight item was removed. Aspartame (NutraSweet/Equal) is that safety-of-flight item! I do not expect to see Aspartame banned from the marketplace at this time; that is an unrealistic expectation. My immediate, personal goal, however is to have all pilots informed of the potential safety-of-flight hazard posed by Aspartame. At least, they could then make an informed decision whether they wished to risk their lives and careers by playing airborne Russian roulette with Aspartame-laced products. Of course, a more appropriate question may be asked: 'Should pilots even have this right, when other people's lives are at stake?"
Aspartame was discovered as a drug in the 60s (first approved in 1974 then rescinded because of the brain tumor issue — then approved again, over the objections of many scientists, in 1981) and is composed of two synthetic amino acids, Phenylalanine, Aspartic Acid and Methanol (10% wood alcohol). At temperatures exceeding 85 degrees F (body temperature is 98.6) the substance breaks down further into Formaldehyde, Formic Acid, and Diketopiperazine (a brain tumor agent). Aspartame complaints make up 80% of all complaints volunteered to the FDA. Aspartame is often the unidentified environmental trigger for: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Alzheimers, Lyme Disease, Post Polio Syndrome, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Epilepsy, Anxiety/Phobia Disorders, Manic Depression, Graves' Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Heart Disease, Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome and others. Many Doctors have reported drastic improvement or disappearance of symptoms after removing Aspartame from the patients' diet. On rechallenge, the symptoms tend to return. Symptoms reported to the FDA include: headache, nausea, vertigo, insomnia, numbness, blurred vision, blindness, memory loss, suicidal depression, personality and behavior changes, hyperactivity, gastrointestinal disorders, seizures, skin lesions, muscle cramping and joint pain, fatigue, heart attack symptoms, hearing loss and tinnitus, pulmonary and cerebral edemas, shock and death.
The FDA continues to ignore this imminent danger to the American public, choosing instead to call moratoriums on things having no absolute proof of danger, no emperical data, no double blind studies showing harm such as Dow's breast implants and L-Tryptophan. They even allow the newest Monsanto fiasco, Bovine Growth Hormone to be injected into our previously safe milk supply. Registered Dietitians have been handed $100,000 to set up a hotline to tell callers how great BST is for their families. Monsanto is suing small dairies who wish to state on the label that their product is BST-free. Judge Clarence Thomas, a former Monsanto attorney may have a difficult job remaining absolutely neutral if Monsanto (his former employer) is brought before the Supreme Court. If you want to know more about the underhanded dealings of the makers of Aspartame and BST, rent the movie "I Love Trouble" starring Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte. It's all about a fictional chemical company [makers of an artificial sweetener and a bovine growth hormone] whose employees attempt to kill people who get too close to discovery of their darkest secrets.
Ironically a major soft drink manufacturer made a conscious effort to target pilots for sales of their Aspartame sweetened product as they feature two pilots [diet drinks in their hands] flying a chopper in their commercials on TV. Their management was notified fully of the problems associated with aspartame ingestion on the part of pilots and others in the spring of 1991. At that time we were told they were switching to another sweetener in six months. What happened? We may never know. Diet Pepsi is now expiration dating their product in what we can only assume is a vain attempt to spare some customers the agonies of possible brain tumors from the breakdown product, Diketopiperazine (DKP) which kept Aspartame off the market for many years. Because military participants in the Gulf War were rehydrating with Diet Drinks furnished free by the soft drink companies, it is likely that Desert Storm Syndrome may simply be serious reactions to Aspartame. In desert heat the breakdown products reach toxic proportions much more quickly … leaving a virtual witches brew in place of the original chemical sweetener.
By the way, FDA Director, David Kessler told a Time magazine reporter that he starts every day with a diet drink.
George E. Leighton is a pilot and noise control consultant based in Orange, CA., and an FAA certified ATP flight instructor.
