Jonas’ Dressing Table
This is my take on Norm Abrams’ New Yankee Workshop Dressing Table project.
The table is close to the plans but I did make a few alterations to the depth, and most notably used local solid cherry for the entire table instead of Mahogany and a plywood core.
I got into woodworking while in my early twenties and completed a few projects with limited resources in tooling. Over the last couple of years, I began building my collection of tools most notably with a SawStop cabinet saw, custom router table with a lifting base, an 8″ joiner, and as of this project, a SuperMax 19-38 drum sander.
When starting back a couple of years ago, I found The Wood Whisperer You Tube videos served as inspiration since the New Yankee Workshop is no longer in production.
This project is my first attempt at a piece of furniture of this caliber and offered a challenge with turning the legs using my grandfather’s old Craftsman lathe, keeping in mind I hadn’t used a wood lathe in more than 20 years. The dressing table was also a challenge in that the fit and finish was very important for it to look right.
The stain is General Finishes Candlelight and the varnish is General Finishes Arm-R-Seal.

Cousin Jim’s Entry Bench
Built from a Woodsmith plan (Issue #198, December 2011), this Classic Entry Bench was constructed with quarter-sawn white oak. Once sanded to 320, it was finished with four coats of Watco Danish oil (natural).
The style is robust and simple. The curves and arcs add pleasing lines. The most challenging element of construction was locating and creating the four through mortises in the seat plank, while the most laborious part of the project was scalloping and refining the shape of the seat. I give credit, however, to Woodsmith for providing an excellent plan with good solutions to otherwise difficult woodworking. I did stray from the Woodsmith method of attaching the seat mortise router templates. I opted instead for a method demonstrated in a Crimson Guitars (UK) YouTube video, where masking tape and CA glue take the place of double-sided tape. The sheer strength is better than that of d/s tape and removal is quicker and cleaner. It’s unlikely that I will ever use double sided tape again as a means of securing templates.
Built in central North Carolina as a thank-you to my cousin Jim, the bench now happily resides in Southeast Denver, Colorado.

Dining Chair
You might recall the Gaming Dining Table I built in 2015. Ever since then, Nicole has been asking repeatedly, “When do I get my chairs?” So I started designing a new chair that I’d eventually batch out for a total of six. I did this as a Guild project where I discuss the details of my design and prototyping process. With the help of my fellow Guild members, the prototype was improved upon and the final six chairs were completed. If you want to get the plans for this project and get immediate access to all 17 videos, you can do so here.
The video I’ve assembled here is a quick look at the process of designing and building the chair. I hope you enjoy!
While my chairs will sit around my dining table, I should mention that these chairs would also look great around the Trestle Table I built earlier this year.
Get access to the full 17-video build and plans here!

Nicole’s Wooden Spatula
Nicole’s favorite wooden spatula recently decided it had enough. The spoon was a layup from multiple pieces and featured two glue joints. With repeated exposure to moisture and heat, the joints eventually opened up. While the spatula is repairable, we decided we’d try to make something spatula as a fun collaborative project. Nicole turned the handle and I carved the spatula. We pretty much winged the entire project and used the old spatula as a model for the new one, so there are no official plans available for this. We hope you enjoy!
Here are a few links to products shown in the episode:
Makita Die Grinder
Ball Nose Burr
Powermatic 3520B Lathe
Narex Rasp (not the exact rasp I used but it’s a reasonably-priced substitute)
Tried & True Varnish Oil

Adam’s Wall Hanging Jewelry Box
My wife had been complaining about how messy her small little jewelry box was and how hard it was to find matching earrings. So I started searching the internet for inspiration. I found that there were several hang on the wall and or over the door models that I thought would be really nice. So I began designing.
I started with the hanging mirror we had on the wall and used that for the dimensions. I then showed my wife several of the designs and asked her to tell me how she would like the inside to be laid out. I wanted the inside to be flexible. So I made shelving holes the entire length. I also made a french cleat system on the door so that the earring holder could be moved or other boxes/accessories could be created if desired. I used maple and finished it with an oil based poly to get the “glow” from the wood. It was a fun project!
