Chiseling a Corner
Sometimes it’s fun to dive deep into a topic. I recently had to cut a large rabbet using a rabbeting bit which resulted in rounded corners. Unfortunately, I need the corners to be square so it was time to break out the chisels. While this process may be common sense to some, the actual steps taken to achieve a perfect continuation of the rabbeted edge without mangling the integrity of the lines requires quite a bit of attention to detail. So this is a step by step review of my process.

Festool DF 500 Connectors
For my Executive Desk build, I needed to employ knock-down hardware where the center panel connects the two pedestals. Traditional knock-down hardware would work just fine but I wanted to explore a new option from Festool. If you have a Festool Domino, their connector system is a no-brainer way to make sturdy non-permanent connections, or at least if the ads are to be believed. Like anything Festool, the system isn’t cheap. But this Executive Desk is actually going to be my “lifetime” desk and build quality is a big priority, so I decided to give them a shot. The DF 500 Connectors have several configurations but I only needed one for my desk, and that’s what I’ll show you here.
From my limited experience with the connectors and this project, I have to say that these are the best/highest-quality knock-down connections I’ve ever seen. The parts aren’t likely to come loose any time soon, which is something that’s all too common with traditional cam-lock hardware (think IKEA). If you find yourself producing a lot of knock-down furniture or need this kind of joint for whatever reason, I think the system is a pretty solid investment.

A Simple Frame & Panel
I’m currently working on an Executive Desk that features large panels on the sides and front. I pondered the various ways to construct the panels along with the rails and legs that would comprise the “frame” and ultimately decided on a very simple solution: face-gluing the rails to the panels.
This method proved to be quite effective and results in some incredibly beefy panels for the Executive Desk. If you’re interested in building this desk, you can get access to the project here.

Moxon Joinery Bench
My regular woodworking bench is at the perfect height for planing wood, but I wanted something a little bit higher for doing more detailed work such as carving or joinery.
The moxon vise is made with 3/4” acme threaded rod and the matching nuts, which I embedded behind the non-moving wood jaw. The handles are made of ebony that I cut, chiseled and rasped to shape. They’re epoxied to the steel rods. The vise can firmly hold boards up to 24 inches wide.
Most materials were salvaged from the dumpster. The laminated top and the frame material were 11 feet long pallet stretchers. I took the nails out and planned them flat. I think they are some kind of soft maple. The drawer fronts and the matching side boards were long laminated pieces of oak flooring which had been left on the curb. The frame was milk painted and everything was covered with natural tung oil.
