Deborah was Googling to try to find out why we have an occasional curry smell (without curry) in one of our rooms, and found a blog by someone who was told it’s a symptom of the approach of a spirit guide.
So we might have a spirit guide, but my money’s on it having something to do with dogs and urine.

Tad’s Mood Today
Just finished the first draft of HAPPY HOUR IN HELL. There’s still a bit of clean-up and revision before I can let anyone look at it, including my publishers, wife, and agent — I do have my pride — but the story itself is written. Think I’m going to have a short nap to celebrate. That’s me, living large.
House is in a good mood because of an excellent review for DIRTY STREETS in Publishers Weekly. Dogs are romping. Outside my office windows the sun is shining and juncos are swarming a seed cake. I’m going to enjoy this for a little while, before life picks me up again and rushes me onward.

Tad’s Mood Today
I’M THE GODDAMN CATMAN. (Little comics in-joke.)
We had a date, the wife and I. First time in months. Didn’t go to a movie, just went out to eat at a cool place in downtown Santa Cruz. Then we went home and used this electronic magnifying science toy with our daughter to look at various things made huge that should never be made huge, like dirty carpets and a dog’s belly. Then the two womenfolk decided they had to look at their own skin and stuff and of course that was pretty much all that happened for the rest of the evening. “Eww, is that a mole? Come look, I’m serious. Is that a mole with a hair on it, or is that just a bit of fiber?”
Still, it was fun evening. Not really a conventional date, I know, but we’re not really a conventional couple.

I bet it would be less fun to be me if, instead of a fairly wide readership to interact with, I only had one patron. Like the pope or somebody.

Tad’s Mood Today
Been reading Polish poetry today (in translation, I hasten to add.) Research. I really like my job.
These transition days, when I’m working but I’m not quite certain that I’m working on the right thing, are mildly annoying. Make me grumpy, even. I wouldn’t kick an innocent person, but I’d definitely consider giving a scofflaw of some kind a vigorous nudging with my foot.

Hey, rising tide lifts all boats, they say? Any other fantasy writers received a buttload of offers for TV adaptations since GRRM’s Game of Thrones has been so successful and is now coming up on its third season? You neither?

Booklist on ‘A Stark and Wormy Knight’
From Subterranean Press:
The kindly folks at Booklist have just given their thumb’s up to Tad Williams’ hefty new collection, A Stark and Wormy Knight.
To wit:
“This is a collection of Williams’ excellent short fiction, originally published within the past 10 years. The 11 stories include fantasy, sf, and a few oddments, and they all make most interesting reading. The title story is most laughably pun-ishing; ‘The Storm Door’ is a subtle and frightful zombie tale; ‘Ants’ is a terrifying tale of a marriage gone wrong; and ‘Ministers of Grace’ is an introduction to a major novel not yet written. There is also a script for a DC Comics series that was never produced, and a screenplay for a movie never made, both of which show the breadth of Williams’ talent.”

‘The Dirty Streets of Heaven’ Early Reviews: Readers Love Bobby Dollar
Advance review copies of Tad’s latest book, The Dirty Streets of Heaven, have been circulating for a couple of weeks, and early reviews are coming in. Here is a round-up of what readers are saying about Bobby Dollar plus an exclusive excerpt from the book on Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist, and a give-away on Goodreads.
The Dirty Streets of Heaven will be released on September 4th. Read more about it here.
“When I heard that Tad Williams was writing an urban fantasy novel, I got all tingly. Now I’ve read it, and it’s even better than I’d dared to hope. It’s snarky, fast-paced, and above all, original. You should be tingly, too.”
– Patrick Rothfuss, best-selling author of The Name of the Wind

STEPHEN ORMSBY REVIEWS THE DIRTY STREETS OF HEAVEN
The Dirty Streets of Heaven has surprised me. It is a story of Heaven and Hell and one angel, Bobby Dollar, stuck in the middle of it. He is not an important angel by any means, but seems to have a real talent for finding trouble. Or trouble finds him even if he doesn’t want it.
Souls are going missing and nobody knows why. Both Heaven and Hell are nervous and Bobby Dollar gets sucked into the middle of it.
If you are a seasoned Tad Williams fan, then you are in for a real treat. This is new ground for our fantasy favourite. If you haven’t read Tad before then you might like to read this and then have a look at some of his fantasy. I recommend Otherland. You will be amazed at how different they will read.
Tad is a master story teller and this series will be up there with his best.
SFBOOK.COM REVIEWS THE DIRTY STREETS OF HEAVEN
Here we have a modern take on the whole heaven and hell idea and the author does a brilliant job of describing the heavenly host and its angelic agents, set within an urban fantasy detective backdrop. I love how the author explains the way this afterlife works, it makes a great deal of sense and really pits the agents of heaven and hell against each other in competition for these departed souls.
Even better though is the actual story, narrated in the first person by our reluctant, angelic hero Bobby Dollar — which helps to create that detective ambience — we are treated to a twisting tale which greys the edges between good and bad and offers a plot that manages to keep the reader on their toes, although I did manage to guess what was going on before Bobby did. The story is broken up with some great action scenes and effective character building.
Williams has managed to create something really special with The Dirty Streets of Heaven that manages to breathe new life into the urban fantasy genre while at the same time retaining that magic of his earlier novels, an incredible start to a promising series.
PHOENIX RISING REVIEWS THE DIRTY STREETS OF HEAVEN
I loved that this is another one of his suck zone books! You open to the first page and you are sucked in! The story is so rich and fun that you get sucked in from the very first word! When I started to read this book my worst fear becomes…WHAT IF I DIE BEFORE I FINISH READING THIS BOOK? Truly for me Tad has once again created something new and fresh. There really is no comparison to any other book on the market, including his own. I know this because I have read everything that he has written. The best I can do is to say the feel of the flow of the story is similar to The War of the Flowers. The Dirty Streets of Heaven has a unique feeling to the story line. I love how he comes up with the new concepts and a fresh perspectives in his story telling.
I highly recommend this book to a scifi/fantasy reader, but due to cussing in the book I would say those over 17.
WHAT READERS ON GOODREADS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE DIRTY STREETS OF HEAVEN
“I enjoyed the book tremendously. It is a little more earthy than Williams’ more recent books, including colorful expletives to highlight moments of tension and a couple of adult scenes to establish the power and significance of a relationship.”
– Margit
“Another reason I loved it is it’s a short quick read. It’s a hell of a lot of fun and Bobby Dollar is a fun, multi-layered character that I enjoyed spending time with.”
– Steve Lewis
“What a great book so far. I expected another fantasy from Tad Williams but this so different. Angels and demons and lost souls. Very entertaining so far.”
– Stephen C.
“I was lucky enough to get a copy of the proof last week and just finished reading it. Warning: you may lose track of time, sleep and touch with your loved ones while reading this book.”
– Marquita

Coming Soon: The Dirty Streets of Heaven
The first book in the Bobby Dollar series to be published in September 2012
Enjoy a teaser extract of The Dirty Streets of Heaven:
“It was a relief to see the dead kid’s soul actually waiting there…”
Bobby Dollar is an angel—a real one. He knows a lot about sin, and not just in his professional capacity as an advocate for souls caught between Heaven and Hell. Bobby’s wrestling with a few deadly sins of his own—pride, anger, even lust.
But his problems aren’t all his fault. Bobby can’t entirely trust his heavenly superiors, and he’s not too sure about any of his fellow earthbound angels either, especially the new kid that Heaven has dropped into their midst, a trainee angel who asks too many questions. And he sure as hell doesn’t trust the achingly gorgeous Countess of Cold Hands, a mysterious she-demon who seems to be the only one willing to tell him the truth.
When the souls of the recently departed start disappearing, catching both Heaven and Hell by surprise, things get bad very quickly for Bobby D. End-of-the-world bad. Beast of Revelations bad. Caught between the angry forces of Hell, the dangerous strategies of his own side, and a monstrous undead avenger that wants to rip his head off and suck out his soul, Bobby’s going to need all the friends he can get—in Heaven, on Earth, or anywhere else he can find them.
You’ve never met an angel like Bobby Dollar. And you’ve never read anything like The Dirty Streets of Heaven.
Brace yourself—the afterlife is weirder than you ever believed.
Three books are planned for the series: The Dirty Streets of Heaven, Happy Hour in Hell, and Sleeping Late on Judgment Day. Each will be somewhat shorter than Tad’s usual epic science fiction and fantasy fare, and although part of a series, each may be read as a stand-alone novel.
The Dirty Streets of Heaven will be published in September by DAW Books in the US and by Hodder Stoughton in the UK.

Baseball fans only: I think it was Rob Dibble and some New York sportswriters whining about Sandoval and Cabrera making the starting line-up. As it turns out, S. and C. have darn near won the All-Star Game by themselves. So you can eat a bag of raw *gaebul*, Dibs.

Been doing research. Don’t want to be culturally insensitive, but I doubt I will be trying this food very soon. It’s called “gaebul”, a kind of marine worm. It’s popular in some Korean and Japanese cuisines, is served raw, and is called either “Fat Innkeeper Worm” or “Penis Fish.” For a guy who doesn’t eat sushi, there are several deal-breakers in this one.
We have built an entire culture on “colorless” classical statues and friezes. I suspect if we could, we’d go back in time and scrub the paint off them all, just so they’d match what we thought for so long.

I have set out to solve two fairly basic backyard creature identification problems in the last week, and both have led me into fascinating and confusing lines of zoological inquiry. This stuff is hard, at least when you only have books and the internet, but I can see why people devote their lives to such things.
Besides the second Bobby Dollar book, HAPPY HOUR IN HELL, which I’m just finishing, I’m also working on four short stories at the same time. The titles (working, at this stage) are: THE OLD SCALE GAME; GOD BRINGS HIS DAUGHTER TO WORK; MEDICINE DANCE, ARIZONA; and BASHO. (I don’t know how to do that Japanese “O” with the line over it.) With luck, I’ll have most of them done in another week or so. And not be dead.

I am in a sort of high-heat, fast-cooking mode at the moment with my writing, trying to get a huge number of projects done, a first draft of second Bobby Dollar novel and several short stories due for anthologies being the main culprits.
And at the moment it’s going well enough that I’m reluctant to take time off to do other things, like get exercise or hang out with my family. I find it interesting how the essential fulcrum of life for me is always work (which I love) versus family and friends (which I love more).

Boudicca: From ‘Publishers Lunch’ 6/19/12
Interesting breakdown of Seth Godin’s Kickstarter — note that it’s therefore mainly carried by his big fans, in a limited edition kind of way. It’s how to publish niche successfully — it’s not necessarily a lesson for big publishers beyond that.
It’s no surprise that Seth Godin‘s Kickstarter effort announced yesterday morning to jump-start his new book THE ICARUS DECEPTION successfully drew his “tribe” of most loyal followers: in just over 24 hours the project has garnered pledges of nearly $200,000, with many rewards offers fully claimed. One interesting potential takeaway for other authors and publishers is that these early supporters are not driven by the lowest-priced offerings. His recommended “no-brainer” package was fully subscribed with 800 backers at $111 each (and 3 of the 4 higher-priced packages are also filled). That’s about the same number of backers who have now elected for the least expensive $4 digital preview only–with the former generating almost $89,000 and the latter accounting for only about $3,300 in sales. It would take over 22,000 cheap previews to equal the revenue from those higher-priced pledges.
