Here in California we're still in the last hour of Independence Day, which means I still have time to share this holiday-appropriate picture of Teddy Roosevelt machinegunning Bigfoot. America -- @#$% YEAH

We are lucky enough to own this. We consider ourselves custodians. And it's all true! Jack was the best.

Good piece on the HB and why it matters. Thanks Deb, Bruce, and others for passing this around.

A million monkeys typing for a million years couldn't get me caught up.

I would have considered this one of the greatest comic book covers of all time anyway, but as a writer prone to deadline frenzies, I find it even more satisfying.

It would be nice if we could put some of that Robert-Ardrey “killer ape” crap to bed. (It’s also the foundation for a lot of authoritarian twaddle.) As usual, the truth is much more complicated and much more interesting.

I can’t believe I actually just wasted five minutes of my life arguing that Obama probably isn’t a Marxist. It’s like talking to breakfast cereal.

“WHY is Obama a Marxist?”

“Snap. Crackle. Pop!”

“But those aren’t reasons.”

“Pop. Snap. Crackle. And so are you.”

One never knows about other people’s marriages, but I have a strange feeling Katie Holmes is going to be enjoying her life a lot more in the next couple of years.

It’s a useful reminder of technology’s sway over our lives that when my internet connection and computer are balky, like today, I keep wanting to punch reality in the face.

I think I’d like to be writer in residence in a quiet bar with good food. Like as an actual job. I’d just sit there and be the quiet background noise as I typed out people’s short requests for disquisitions or stories on various themes. Every now and then I’d lean into the mike and call out dedications.

“This story about one of my animals, but written in the style of Chuck Palahniuk, goes out to Mindy and Karl. Thanks, guys. Yeah, just tuck it right in the jar, there.”

I’m in a quiet, calm late night mood again tonight, at least in terms of the music I feel like listening to (and sharing.)

NBA draft tonight. I’m all excited. I almost like the draft better than the actual season, for some reason. I guess because it’s all about possibility.
