Watch Over Us

*Movie Review Picture What the heck do you do when you have the devil living in your barn? You call in a few favors from your local senator; you get the SWAT team, a handful of Navy SEALS and maybe even a few cops to chase him out! You don't take no mess from the devil, right? Well, I can say Watch Over Us was built on a pact made with the devil, and as with all his nefarious dealings, the movie lost. Picture Watch Over Us is a movie that runs deep. Since arriving in America, Jon's family was struck with a bit of misfortune. But after a deal is made, things suddenly looked good for the family. Sadly, much had to be given in order to have the things they wanted.

The movie tried to carry a heavy tone, after all the devil lived on the property, but it wasn’t out carried out in a way that made it scary. The air wasn't heavy and the horror wasn’t horrific, but you got the idea it was supposed to be. The father even played more of the naive role, which made his daughters smarter and stronger in the end. I won’t even get started on his older son and brother!

Honestly, the story made sense, but it wasn’t carried out well, and the ending was a huge let down. The movie poster (A+ artwork) is creative and ominous though; totally not what you get when you watch the film!  Check it out anywhere video is rented. It released in May of 2015.

A Shining in the Shadows by Beverley Lee

An eBook review. Picture I was thrilled to finally read Beverley Lee's A Shining in the Shadows! This is the follow up novel to The Making of Gabriel Davenport, which I read in 2016. Book 2 didn't disappoint; I am happy to say.

Book two picks up where the first ended, but a short while later. Gabriel's been sacrificed, in order to be saved from a demon- the demon he and his crew from book one were battling. The problem is, Clove (a vampire) saved him; thus beginning a new journey for him. As if he wasn't already confused about who he was!

A Shining in the Shadows shares a complicated journey of revenge, hatred and eventually a surprising alliance. The story is about family and how, when united, any foe can be defeated.    I was impressed with book two of the Gabriel Davenport series. Beverly Lee gave blood and sweat to ensure the story's buildup of Gabriel's new life was understood. The hierarchy of training and when dealing with ancient ones and paranormal creatures- all the things he was being trained to fight against! Now being one with the night, he's on a completely new ballfield - and actually develops well.

The concept of information traveling through what's  called a Bloodvyne was totally awesome. It's like the internet for vamps! LOL Information of a so-called cleansing was being passed- but I can't say much more, because that would be offering up SPOILERS, and I just don't do that. It was very creative and I loved it.

The book is good and if you've not read book one, it's okay. I'd honestly say that it could be standalone, but it would be best to read The Making of Gabriel Davenport. There is a lot of references to the first book, you even revisit them, so grab that book! Also, I believe there's another coming. Don't be left behind!

Okay, so I'm on to the next read. Cheers!

The 13th Friday

*Movie Review A spherical calendar holds the key to opening the gates of hell, allowing Satan with his demonic entourage earthly access, is opened by a group of thrill-seeking teenagers at a price. Each are cursed with a job to complete in 13 months, but can they keep their end of the bargain?

The 13th Friday begins with murder, biblical narration and a group of the dumbest young adults a person could imagine! Everything told me it was going to be a dreadful view, but it tried to develop a workable plot. I waited for the story to improve, but was left wanting.

The acting confused me. There were scenes where people should have reacted to hearing their friend spotting a Picture creepy, crispy girl with glowing eyes differently. Instead they were dismissive or completely blank. The fright scenes were fragile, predictable. Matter of fact, the best scenes were emulated from other films such as Lights Out, Hellraiser and The Ring. There simply wasn’t enough of the movie that came from an original concept to hold me.

My final issue had to do with the lack of personality or depth of the characters.  Nothing was shared of their backgrounds to allow the opportunity to develop a sense of caring for them. The movie cast me into a foolish situation with supposedly drunk teens, tossed in a weak purpose to set the story into motion, then left me in a useless limbo until the much sought after ending, that put me right back at the freaking beginning of the movie- I kid you not!

I would have liked to say the movie’s only redeeming quality was the fact that there is practically an all female cast, but I can’t. In my honest opinion, The 13th Friday would best e viewed on a late, Saturday night, while inebriated with friends.

The Bride of Glass, #2 in The Glass Vault series by Candace Robinson

Picture Candace Robinson, the author of The Glass Vault series, has proven herself an adventurous gal. I am enjoying her storylines and characters, but did book two in such a fantastical tale live up to all the hype? Picture I was happy to have been given the opportunity to find out what happened to Perrie, her cousin and the now dreaded Vale! The Bride of Glass picked up pretty much where Quinsey Wolfe's Glass Vault ended- with the city in peril! Perrie's happy life turned out to be a world full of disappointment and upset. Hate, lust, revenge and more- making The Bride of Glass NOT one of the YA novels I'd expected to read. Granted, book one didn't really sit in that category either, but I was even more pleased with this. August was a sham with a plan!

Now, everyone's been turned to glass and it's up to Neven, Perrie and Crazy Maisie to bring return the world to order. I guess those new jobs, collecting souls for the glass museum turned out to be a bummer! The only problem: you can't do anything about anything until you wake up! Vale's influence is stronger than any lullaby; leaving everyone trapped in a perpetual state of insanity, of all sorts.

The Bride of Glass is a dark fairytale of an adult kind. There are things that happen, you wouldn't expect and some things I couldn't even imagine to figure it out. I was left in wonder, and that was pretty cool. I didn't like how I was made to travel back a great deal for clarity- since so much more was happening in the present, but it didn't hurt the story one bit. I found myself captivated and thoroughly enjoyed the read.

Check out the series while I move on to the next read!
Cheers!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Off on Holiday with the family! Picture Hello friends! Guess what... I am not home! I ran off to spend time with the family, so there are no reviews for this week. I thought long and hard about this. I have pushed all month long for NaNoWriMo (I hit my 50K on Saturday, btw), teaching my son and singing with church. My hands were mad-crazy and I now feel exhausted.

So with this 8-day getaway, I will continue writing for NaNoWriMo, but I'll also re-read one of my short stories, as well as write another that's been on my mind. I hope you don't mind the time, and I'll stay in contact while away through social media. But as for reviews, there will be none.

Cheers to those who celebrate Thanksgiving, and for those who do not- Have an awesome week!

The Quiet Thinker by Valarie Elena Stephens

*Lessons of Love, Spirituality and Self-Acceptance from the Mid of an 'Introvert'. Picture Do you know an Introvert? Are you an Introvert?

This is going to sound strange, but I know many introverts. I didn't think they were, not until a particular conversation, or until I came across this book by Valarie Elena Stephens. The book is called The Quiet Thinker, and it tells what In Introvert is, how they think and feel, but most of all, Stephens shares how she was able to step out of her comfort zone with an acceptance of who she was, as well as explains how many never get to shine from fear of judgement... I am definitely an extrovert, but only because I used to sit in introvert status, and it was maddening! I was always the new kid so I sat in a sort of bubble off and on most of my life, but the description Stephens gave on how she felt and lived was totally foreign to me! That's one of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much.

Stephens begins the book with an explanatory story- going to Pre-K for the first time. She shares the comfort of security, viewing her mother as a sort of safety net while moving about the class with other students, but when the second day arrived, when she had to go alone, everything was different. There was no security and everything felt wrong, off and frightening.  It's a great share and excellent example but The Quiet Thinker is so much more. It goes deeper.

The author also describes how she had dreams of doing things most Introverts never dare too. She dreamed of travel, she sought a spiritual comfort, and she found a way to marry and have children. There's a cycle she's broken and you can feel your way through this book, into understanding her method, which may be 100% different from another's.

For anyone to open up and share what she did, is near heroic. I found it precious and special- unlike any book I've read in this genre. If you're interested, you can either visit Stephens on her website, by clicking on her name, or simply typing: The Quiet Thinker in your search engine.

I'm off to the next read. Cheers! The Quiet Thinker

Kyle Alexander Romines: A Sound In the Dark

Picture I am a Romines fan!

His first novel, The Keeper of the Crows was fantastic; filled with paranormal horror, I couldn't stop reading it. The same happened with A Sound In The Dark. This fast-paced novel will suck you in and you will not stop, won't be able to stop until you've finished it! I started on Wednesday, but had to go to church. I finished it off Thursday, and was like, "WOW!"   Picture The story is about a young man, doing his best to deal with a devastating loss. Feeling he needs to rage against God, friends and life in general, he becomes a self-made hermit. But his friends won't relent. They talk him into a camping trip at a national park.  But the forested land is a breeding ground for death. Something is out there, and it wants to pick them off, one at a time...

Kyle Alexander Romines is a talented author and this is a cool read. This novel, originally started when he was in high school, happens so fast, is so surprising and thrilling- I felt like I was watching everything take place. The story consumed me and I couldn't stop reading. At. All. Except when I was forced to, due to an engagement.

Filled with twists and turns, I studied to keep up- I even managed to figure out two of the many factors to the story. With a proud chest, I set the book down, completed with a grand smile on my face and no one to share it with. Don't you just hate that!?

Anyway, check out Romanes' A Sound In The Dark- available everywhere! I'm off to the next read.  Cheers! A Sound In the Dark

Interior

*Movie Review Picture Interior, Zachary Beckler’s first movie, was filled with comedic realism and a little scare. Sam, doing a favor for his ex-girlfriend, decided to investigate her home. She claimed it was haunted and her daughter spoke with one of the inhabitants who went by the name of Emily. So with rented equipment, he went for an over night to make contact with the ghost. What ensued was jocular, practical and perplexing. Picture The movie carried a small bit of history, lending substance to the plot of the story, but it wasn’t really about reaching Emily; it was all about Sam. Without giving any SPOILERS, I admit I found Sam’s character likable. His actions were easy to see truly happening in real life, especially when one is alone. I didn’t like his setup about the house, so much was missed because he wasn’t as much of a professional as he pretended to be, but what was seen and affected him was enough to keep me interested.

The climactic ending held a strange vortex that didn’t make much sense, but I managed to walk away from Interior with a smile on my face. It was entertaining and gave me a couple of jump-scares, and isn’t that what all horror lovers long for?

I believe Beckler can create more and will improve in time. I’ll be watching for him.  Interior released on October 26th of 2014 and can be viewed anywhere online streaming is available.

Investing Isobella by Jason Werbeloff

*Short, Sci-Fi Horror Picture This story is terribly sad! I knew it wouldn't have a happy ending because it's written by Jason Werbeloff- a man who specializes in endings that leave you thinking to and probably bellowing from the shock! This is good.

Investing Isobella, by Jason Werbeloff, is about a man who thinks he's figured out a way out of debt. The method does not win  win out by any means! There's an ending I saw coming, but wow is it amazing!

If you like weird, gross and even ghastly- this is your read. Check out Investing Isobella while I move on to the next read.  Cheers!
