Homeschool Folk Art Lesson: Paper Craft Quilt Squares (Jake's Journey)
We are officially chicken farmers! So, in this edition of Jake's Journey in Art we incorporated our Silver Wyandotte Chicks into the homeschool art project. This paper craft is a pattern for an 8 x 8 quilt square. The assignment was to design a quilting pattern with shapes, colors, and a nice layout picturing a favorite activity. These squares depict egg collecting. You can cut simple shapes like these for your preschoolers or early elementary students and see what they create.

When a bunch of people get together to make a quilt it is called a quilting bee. Quilts have been an important part of history. One of my favorite books is by Faith Ringgold, "Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky". The illustrations in the book are picture perfect for quilting. Quilts were sometimes used as welcome flags for runaway slaves. Many quilts depict important events.
History of the Underground Railroad in Indiana

So, finally getting chicks is a very important event in our family. Each of us chose a different color for the background and then coordinated the other background colors into our design. If the daddy had made one, we'd have a perfectly symmetrical mini paper quilt to hang on the wall. Since he didn't, we're going to put our quilt squares in frames and hang them vertically near our front door.

Gold and Silver Laced Wyandotte Chicks at 6 days old.

Jake's quilt square is pictured above. He loves our chicks, but he is not a fan of art. However, he sat down with us and happily arranged the pieces on his background. Mommy cut out all of the shapes before we got started. This helped to set Jake's mind at ease. Of course, as usual, he complained everyone else's project was much better than his. I quickly explained American Folk Art was done by regular people without any training or even skill in some cases. Even so, it is sought after today and often sold for thousands of dollars. Probably, because it depicts their heart and home.
Jake's Journey in Art starts here
I like how his chicken is laying a pile of eggs, it has two visible feet, and the basket is full of eggs. I love that he enjoyed making this project, and he was happy to know they'll be on display in our dining room.

Crafty First Grade Art Project: Make your own quilt square paper craft.
Mayhem got creative. She cut out a yolk, sunshine, brown eggs, and was the first to include hay in her basket. She even drew baby chicks inside the eggs (in case you couldn't recognize her efforts).

Making quilt squares with your kids is a fun way to discuss history, teach layout and design, and share a special moment in time. What's on your quilting square?

Meet Amazing Crafty Kid Bloggers and find Inspiring Crafts for Kids
While searching the net for things to do with egg cartons and eggs for an
  Easter theme roundup
, I came across the most amazing blogger. I was astonished to see she only had 14 GFC followers. Say whaaat? Well, we'll fix that.

Egg Shell Chalk from Pink Stripey Socks.
So, rather than doing a round up, I decided to start a new series where I feature amazing bloggers who aren't getting the exposure and blog love they deserve. Pink Stripey Socks hasn't monetized yet. She hasn't got links for a Facebook page or Pinterest, but with some searching I tracked down her Pinterest Boards. She does have a "subscribe to posts" at the bottom of each one and you should. Her ideas are not only creative; they are inspired recycling! I wanted to pin each one.

Spring Flower Wreath made from Egg Cartons from Pink Stripey Socks.
So, who is the wo-man behind the blog? Leslie describes her crafting as crapty adventures. I love that! Like many of us, her secret dream is to be a children's book author. She hangs her magic glue stick in New Jersey. Leslie, 11 Pinterest Followers today... 1000 tomorrow. This is your calling :)
Here are some of the great ideas Pink Stripey Socks shares for things to do with eggs/cartons.

Easy Edible Easter Crafts: Things to Do with Marshmallow Peeps
Who doesn't love Peeps? Well, besides me. I don't like the tingly feeling on my tongue, but they are oh so cute and perfect for preschoolers crafts. I found these 7 adorable things to do with marshmallow Peeps. Did you know they even have an entire store dedicated to these cuties?

Chocolate covered Peep Chicks from yourhomebasedmom.com
I was inspired to surf for recipe ideas for easy edible Easter crafts after visiting an old-fashioned candy store selling chocolate covered Peeps. Everything in the store was decorated in pastels for Easter and the store windows were straight out of Wonka's factory. The Peeps from Your Home Based Mom pictured above are similar.

An M & M's Peep casserole! Yes, we're gonna try this one from thepartyanimal-blog.org
Did you know you can make a chocolate Peeps casserole? This one from The Party Animal-Blog looks fantastic even to me. I'm going to try to make the recipe for Easter this year.

Painting with Peeps from lyndsxo-glamourmoms.blogspot.com (It Mom).
Painting with Peeps is the perfect activity for preschool kids. This one from It Mom is super cute, but I'd do it with edible paint. We have lots of different recipes here just search in the browse us bar for "edible paint".

Dressed up crafts from Inspiremecrafts.com
Inspire Me Crafts offers up "dressed up" Peeps dipped in chocolate and looking like a bunny bride and groom. Wouldn't they be cute wedding party favors for a spring bridal shower. Pair them with the Peeps topiary below for a fun, spring theme bridal shower.

Make S'mores with Peeps like electicrecipes.com did.
Peeps Smore's is an easy, fun edible craft for kids. They can construct them and you can pop them in the microwave. This idea came from Electic Recipes.

Peeps Crafts for Easter from CraftsnCoffee.com
Finally, this home decor idea for Easter is perfect for a kid's party. The Peep's topiary from CraftsnCoffee is easy to make with kids.
What are you crafting up this Easter? You better hurry, if you are wondering when is Easter this year? Easter is March 31, 2013.
