What I'm Reading
What am I reading now...
Well, right now I am working through huge edits for Deceptive Cadence. With chopping two books down to one, I am going through the now joined manuscripts with a fine tooth comb, cutting unnecessary words, passive voice, and dialogue tags. Then I will have to go through it again and delete scenes that don't really progress the plot. This is my focus right now.
That said, I am signed up to review Fade and Fall by A.K. Morgan. I am about halfway through Fade, and really don't know when I'll get back to it. I also have one more book from NetGalley sitting on my kindle, waiting, as well as all those lovely books by my wonderful and talented writer friends.
I have two full submissions for Curiosity Quills, and two untouched subs sitting in my inbox, as well as a R&R.
I have an issue with over committing...
Or maybe there just isn't enough hours in a day.

To sail across the deep blue seas…or under.
Thank you Katie for having me here today.
Have you ever wondered if anything other than fish or half fish half/man/woman existed under all that water? I have, still do. That’s the basis for my new series, Children of the Waves. So if you’re curious like me here’s one take on who and what exist in those depths.
Sea Bride-Children of the Waves
By LaVerne ThompsonA fantasy romance
For 200 some years Xavior, a child of the waves, has searched the seven depths for his bride only to find her on land. How could a landwalker be his Queen, the one destined to stop the wars among the sea tribes? But one touch and he knew he'd defy Poseidon himself to make her his.
Cori Daniels hated the water; she'd been on board the luxury ocean liner for 2 days and hadn't left her cabin. But when she finally ventured on deck she met a man who looked like a sea god and tempted her like no other. But he tempted her to follow him into the sea.
How could she tell him she feared the water?
EXCERPT:
Xavior left the party and went for a walk around the boat, hoping to clear his head and maybe get a sense of this bride he needed to find. He’d ventured on land often in the last twenty years and met many human women he hadn’t slept with, so he had no idea which one of these his bride could be. If the tales were true, he would just know her, because he would be so drawn to her, the pull would be irresistible. After walking around for an hour, he returned to their cabin, but feeling too restless to sleep, he made his way out to their private balcony. The evening sky remained clear, the glittering points of light soothing, and the sea appeared calm, but he smelled a storm coming. It would arrive soon from the east. Until it did, he would take advantage of the calm. Sitting back in one of the lounge chairs, he put his feet up on the railing, closed his eyes, and turned his face toward the half moon. A familiar clicking noise made him open them again. The shadows of dark fins in the water caught his attention. He stood up and placed his hands on the railing, watching the dolphins play as they swam alongside the boat. They spoke to him, wanting to know how his quest went. Did everyone know he was on a bride hunt? Of course they did. Not so good, he told them. We’re rooting for you, Prince Xavior, young lord of the sea. She is right under your nose. Beware, though. There is a storm coming not of nature’s making. Good luck! As one group, all six dolphins leapt into the air in a salute to him, then swam away to most likely spread the news that after over two hundred years their prince remained unsuccessful in finding his mate. He would be the first heir to lose the throne. Pathetic. What did they mean she was right under his nose? Was the sea witch right? Is his bride truly onboard? He still didn’t fully believe, but perhaps, he just needed to have patience and he’d find her. But their words about the storm made him frown. Someone playing with the elements was never a good thing, and only one would dare. For the moment, he could do nothing about the white witch and her plots to keep him off the throne and continue the wars among the tribes. He had enough to concentrate on…He’d deal with her later.

Sea Storm- Children of the Waves
By LaVerne ThompsonA fantasy romance
Blurb:
Bring on the lightning.
For so long Des’ life was a lie. She had to hide who she really was from the world. Her survival and that of her family depended on her continuing those lies. But it was never harder than when she had to lie to the man she loved.
She was lying to him. Zek knew the woman in his house, in his arms was the bride he’d searched for all of his existence. But as a son of Poseidon nothing and no one would stop him from claiming that which was his.
Excerpt:
The fluttering sensation coursing through his soul had Ezekiel swinging his chair around and standing up. He took two steps and stood in front of the bay windows, covering the entire back wall of his office. His view from his Cayman Island office home looked out over the blue green waters of the Caribbean. He watched several dolphins leap out of the water and he heard their song above the roar of the waves in his head. While he couldn’t exactly talk to the pod or they to him, this message all the Children would understand. They brought him tidings. His brother Xavior had found his bride.
“Lucky bastard,” he mumbled. Then, he chuckled. At least one of them had mated. Zek ran his blunt fingers through dark shoulder-length hair. While he loved his brother, he disagreed with him. He didn’t believe just because Xav now sat as a king on Poseidon’s throne, the unrest in their world would stop. Xav didn’t really understand, or factor in, even the Children needed to evolve and they couldn’t do it while isolated beneath the seas.
The world on land had changed and they must, too. They were the children of gods, but not gods themselves.

Cover Reveal: I Loved That About Her by C.R. Everett

In Love, Carry My Bags, we felt Camryn Johnson’s joy and pain during her heartwrenching and heartwarming journey through life’s circumstances, poor choices, and difficult lessons. Through her relationships with both Glenn and Reese, she became the person she wanted and needed to be. Now it’s Glenn’s turn. Glenn, who feels chronically misunderstood, shares his side of the story in the stand-alone novelI Loved That About Her, revealing his own inner struggles and showing what it’s like to live at the mercy of forces beyond conscious control. These forces take him and his family to the edge when college arch nemesis, Raine Babcock, wreaks havoc on their lives. Glenn shows us that all is not necessarily what it seems, even to himself. Walking a mile in his shoes, may change hearts and minds about the bad boy from Love, Carry My Bags that readers loved to hate.
Recommended for mature audiences 17+ for language and sexual situations. EXCERPT My job ticked along way better than expected. Once I was on the inside, had my clearance, and put my naturally excessive curiosity to work, doors opened. And I opened them.I popped my head into the lab walking back to my desk after an aircraft inspection. “Any little green men in here?” I asked.“Glenn,” my boss, who happened to be in the room, said. “I was just talking about you.”“Yep, my ears were burning. That’s why I stopped by. Whatcha need?” I asked. My boss looked like he didn’t know quite what to make of me, but overlooked any reservations he may have had, just like anyone else who saw my potential and took a chance on me had. For those folks, I was grateful. A flashback to my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Emerson, came to mind. She was the only one who took the time after class to sit down with me and re-explain each day’s lesson, because sitting there in a room full of quiet kids, listening, drove me ape shit. Instead of listening, I fidgeted in my chair wondering what was for lunch, sometimes getting out of my chair for a better view out the window, especially when a plane flew overhead. Mrs. Emerson was nice. “I have one just like you at home,” she said. I’m not sure what she meant, but at the time, I was thinking “nice little boy.” During our one-on-one’s, she’d speak to me like I mattered and never criticized me for not being like all the other kids who could sit in their chairs, listen, and understand, going off to do their homework by themselves after class. We did my homework together, and she gave me M&Ms after each problem I did right. Once I figured that out, I aced almost everything because there was a good reason to do the work. M&Ms right away, not some dumb letter grade handed back on a page three days later. When she explained to my folks that I knew the material, they laid into me about why I couldn’t do it at home in my room, but they clearly didn’t understand the power of M&Ms . . . or one-on-one.“Conroy,” my boss said, “we need you in Seattle. You’re the first guy I thought of when this assignment came up—right up your alley.”I was intrigued. My ears perked up when the words “need you” hit the air. Plus the fact that he thought of me, and “right up your alley” sounded phenom. Having gotten my attention, I listened intently as boss man outlined the particulars of the job, throwing in words like “top secret” and “special clearances” and “national security.” I was all over it and would have accepted right then and there if I didn’t need to consider Camryn.“We need you ASAP,” he said.“Let me talk it over with my wife,” I said, somehow managing to stifle my excitement. I hoped she’d like the idea too. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

LOVE, CARRY MY BAGS – EXCERPT Reese’s dad was putzing around the kitchen when we walked in. “Oh, you’re staying too,” he said, my duffel prodding his memory. “You can put your stuff in Helen’s room. Since she’s not using it anymore, you may as well.”“Hey.” Reese greeted his father.“If you want something to eat, you’ll have to fix it the old fashioned way.” Mr. Dahlgren stirred leftover spaghetti heating on the stove. “Your mother made sure I’d be living in the dark ages when she absconded with the microwave . . . . At least she left the television.” Reese and I exchanged uneasy glances.“Well, that’s a good thing because you and Reese would be bored watching the microwave together while I do my homework,” I said, grasping for the bright side. “Reese, would you show me upstairs?” I asked, conveniently escaping the awkward moment. He carried our bags up the stairs and placed mine on a low-set king-sized bed in the first room on the left. The room reminded me of my grandmother’s house with dimly lit gabled walls and a faint odor of must, the vintage green bedspread, a ‘50s remnant. “Your parents didn’t sleep together?” I asked, surprised. It hadn’t occurred to me that married people might not sleep together. Well, there were the Samuelson’s I’d heard of, but they were in their nineties and had health issues which made a shared bed logistically impractical.“They haven’t shared a room for years,” Reese said, like this was normal—at least in his parents’ household. I stood, focusing through the bed, my head, lost.“Look,” I said with reluctance, “I’ve got some homework that’s due tomorrow. Why don’t you go downstairs and spend some time with your dad?” Reese’s eyes told me he knew it was the right thing to do even though he’d rather not.“I’m so glad you’re here,” he reiterated, giving me a parting kiss then closed the door behind him. I flopped on the bed, opened Accounting II.Twenty T-squares later, Reese knocked on the door.“I brought you some water.” He set the glass on the bedside table then sat down next to me. “How’s it going?”“I’m almost done.” I took a sip of water. “Thanks.”“Good, I could use some company down there. Dad keeps bringing up sore subjects, between channel surfing. ‘Have you spoke to your mother?’ ‘Why did she leave?’ ‘The grass isn’t greener . . . it’s damn brown for me.’ ‘Why don’t you do something worthwhile with your life?’ Stuff like that.” I put my accounting text down and climbed onto Reese’s lap. I wanted to make all his bad disappear.

Blog Tour: Secret of the Corpse Eater (Undertakers #3) by Ty Drago

The Corpses are up something.U.S. Senator Lindsay Micha had been kidnapped and replaced with a “dead” ringer, the sister to Lilith Cavanaugh, the Queen of the Dead. Now Will Ritter must go undercover in our nation’s capital to ferret out the truth and try to stop this ambitious deader. But his mission becomes even more dangerous when he learns of a mysterious ten-legged monster that prowls the halls of the Capitol Building — a lethal monster with a taste for Corpse flesh.
Can such an alien “enemy of his enemy” truly become Will’s friend?
I write novels for kids, which I suppose allows me to bring a very specific perspective to the topic of “character building” After all, the overwhelming majority of the characters in my Undertakers series are teens or preteens. There are adults in the mix, though not many, and most of these tend to stick to the sidelines of the action — with the exception of my villains, of course, who are just plain evil. But, in order to convince my young readers, to have them relate to and connect with the characters, my heroes need to much more than simply “good.” They need to have recognizable and predictable patterns of behavior without devolving into caricature or cliche. They need to have virtues but also flaws, though these must be acceptable and relatable flaws. Most of all, they need to “fit,” whatever that means.Of course, every author tries to do this, or should, and most succeed to one point or another. There are at least a half dozen schools of thought as to how this aspect of fiction can be achieved. Here's mine.Predictable PatternsEver have a co-worker who's addicted to coffee? Then you come into work one morning to find the coffemaker busted and think to yourself: Well, I'd better stay out of Sharyn's way today! If so, then you're already halfway there. All of us, at one time or another, have demonstrated repeated responses to certain situations that others see and, after a while, can accurately predict. It's something so ingrained in the way human beings interact with one another that nobody really acknowledges it anymore. But — and this is important — readers notice when it isn't there.Over the years, I've worked out this little exercise. When I'm building a character, I start by putting him or her (in my mind) into a series of scenarios. These scenarios can be an banal as a conversation about the weather, or as vital and immediate as a fight for one's life. But I use the same scenarios over and over again. In fact, here they a few of them, written down for the very first time. Bear in mind that these are designed for male characters of about twelve or thirteen years old.1. Will Ritter sees his first “Corpse” — a walking, talking animated cadaver. Does he (a) scream for his mother, (b) run blindly and hide, or (c) stand his ground and try not to give away what he's feeling?2. Will is standing next to his friend Helene Boettcher who, without warning, slides her hand into his. Does he (a) snatch his hand away like it's on fire, (b) pull her into his arms and plant a sloppy kiss on her using both lips, (c) freeze where he stands and become too tongue-tied to form words, or (d) give her hand a supportive squeeze and offer her a look that tells her, “Yeah, I feel that way, too.”?3. Will and his injured friend Dave are attacked by walking dead men. Does Will (a) abandon Dave and run for his own life, (b) grab whatever weapon is handy and quietly vow to defend Dave to the death, or (c) keep Dave quiet and try to create a diversion to lead the monsters in another direction? There are other such scenarios, plenty of them, but you get the idea. Based on the results, Will's patterns of behavior begin to emerge. This makes the writer's life, my life, much easier, as I quickly come to know exactly how to write this character under any circumstances. Better still, it gives the reader a baseline by which they can read the build up to a situation and think, “Oh, I know what Will's gonna do now.”Then, if you wish, you can either vindicate or surprise them!Breaking the pattern is, of course, entirely acceptable. In fact, in any narrative arc, a certain about of personal growth on the part of a key character is expected. So the pattern may change. But it's important to manage that change, to “hang a lantern” on the moments when Will responds in a way that he never has before to circumstances that would seem similar. Some heroes, after all, only find their courage as the story progresses. This is fine, provided that the evolution is careful and at least somewhat conspicuous. This is especially true in children's fiction, where too much subtlety and nuance can be lost on one's readership.Acceptable But Relatable FlawsWe all have our little foibles. Heaven knows I probably have more than my share. You'd have to ask my wife how many of these are “acceptable.” This same is true of your adolescent character. Heroes shouldn't be a paragons. If they are, then your readers will reject them. What's more, they'll reject them without really understanding why.To avoid this, I generally throw a bug into the character's emotional machine. My hero Will Ritter, for example, harbors a clumsy crush on one of his friends, Helene. His best friend, Dave “the Burgermiester” Burger, is a mountain of a boy, loyal to a fault, but with an often disastrous temper. Tom Jefferson, leader of the Undertakers, is as close to a paragon as they come. But even he struggles with fears and insecurities that he doesn't dare share with the kids he commands, and this can make him seem distant. Small things. Subtle things. But definitely there. The adults in my Undertakers stories, and there are a few, tend to all share a common fault. To their eyes, the Undertakers are kids in over their heads, and the grown-ups struggle with the one unbendable truth of this war that's being fought: It can only be fought by kids. This makes them frustrated and often combative. It allows for a rich, confrontational subplot to counterpoint the Undertakers' battle against the Corpses.Making them “fit.”The Undertakers are more than an army of kids. They're also a community of children, with all that brings to the table. There are those characters who are seen as “cool” and those who aren't, those who have a fortune in friends, and those who don't. There are superstars and there are wallflowers. There are bullies and there are nerds.Every character needs to have a place in that structure. So, when the storyline calls for me to introduce a new Undertaker, I ask myself yet another series of questions:1) Is this boy or girl socially “successful?” If, yes, then he or she will quickly develop a broad circle of friends within the Undertakers, with at least one best friend. If no, then he or she will keep to themselves, be largely overlooked or perhaps even bullied, but may connect with a second, similar character.2) Is this character a warrior? The Undertakers are an army, yes, but not all of them see combat. It takes a very special child to learn how to fight and kill Corpses. Those who do tend to become my primary or secondary characters, simply by virtue of the fact that I'm writing an adventure story. Those who don't tend to be more tertiary, often lending support to the war effort through medical aid or weapons design.3) Who is this character's enemies? In this case, I'm not referring to the invasion of murderous animated cadavers. I'm referring to other Undertakers. No one gets along with everyone, especially at their age. So some degree of conflict is expected. If it's missing, then my readers will notice. So pretty much everyone needs to have someone who doesn't like them.Tapestry WeavingWhen I've finished, if I've done my job correctly, I have a tapestry of different personalities that lend depth and richness and, most importantly, relateability to my characters. I frequently get emails from fans identifying their favorite character is and, even more telling, their leastfavorite.Which leads me to my final point: Mix it up. Just like characters, readers come in all flavors. Give as many of them as you can someone in your story who acts almost as a mirror. Let them read of this character's struggles and say to themselves, “He or she's a lot like me!”That's what makes them keep coming back for more.

Guest Post: Angela Archer's Musical Tens List
Top Ten Instrumental CD's to listen to while writing.I have always been a fan of instrumental music, especially good instrumental music. One of my favorite soundtracks is for the movie The Last of the Mohicans. I love to write to instrumental music, and my favorite style is Celtic. It has a strong presence to it that just hits me in the core of my imagination – fiddles, bagpipes, dulcimers, pennywhistles, and harpsichords, all instruments that bring out my inner writer.

A young woman defying the laws of her country, a young man hungry with greed and power, a brave soul who falls in love with one he shouldn’t; all three caught in a country divided by war and a forbidden love torn apart by blackmail and disparity.
Alexandra Monroe is a slave smuggler, smuggling slaves north where they can live as free people. Her crime is sedition and her punishment, if caught, is death. The daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Montgomery, Alexandra lives a life not by her own accord, but a life she willingly accepts for her secret quest to save the lives of slaves. Her ultimate sacrifice is to marry the town's most eligible bachelor, Thomas Ludlow—who has deadly secrets of his own.
One afternoon, Alexandra comes face to face with handsome William Graysden. Although, forbidden for his Creek Indian heritage, he captivates her. They fascinate one another, and ultimately find in each other a bond they don't wish to ignore. After a series of events; however, William must face the choice to continue the dangerous pursuit of Alexandra's affections or forget about her.

Born in Nevada, Angela and her husband made the bold choice to move halfway across the United States, away from all they knew. They have no regrets and have never looked back. Life on a farm can be hectic with children, horses, a dog, a cat, chickens, goats, and the summer frogs that love to take up residence in her backyard, but she wouldn't have it any other way.
