Pastelería o Magia y Arte? Escribà. Hay que verlo para creerlo.

Hola a todos:

Los que me seguís hace algún tiempo sabréis que los viernes normalmente os traigo autores invitados (ya sea vivitos y coleando o clásicos), o novedades literaria (a veces las dos cosas). Como sabéis, muy recientemente he publicado mi novela I Love Your Cupcakes (Me encantan tus cupcakes) en la que buena parte de la acción tiene lugar en un concurso de repostería televisivo (os contaré algo más sobre eso muy pronto) y eso me hizo ponerme a pensar aún más en pastelerías, reposteros y pasteleros.

Ya debéis saber que aunque hace años que vivo en Inglaterra, yo soy de Barcelona, y últimamente por circusntancias familiares he pasado bastantes temporadas allí. Y aunque no es la primera vez que hablamos de comida en Barcelona (os comenté algo sobre las tradiciones por Sant Jordi no hace mucho), no podía dejar pasar la ocasión de hablaros de la casa Escribà, creada en 1906 y que goza de merecida fama.

Tiene una tienda en las Ramblas (¿dónde si no?) que es preciosa, y otra en Gran Vía más grande, y donde también reside su escuela.

 

Yo he visitado la de Gran Vía en alguna ocasión, para tomar algo, o comprar algún dulce, y para chafardear, porque da gusto ver las creaciones que allí se exponen.

No es raro, si os pasáis por allí, ver a Christian Escribà (y estaba allí la última vez que me pasé, pero estaba hablando con gente, que si no…), que no solo ha seguido la tradición familiar, sino que la ha llevado a cotas muy altas. Yo por pura casualidad pesqué su aparición en Master Chef, donde proporcionó su receta de los macaroons y fue encantador.

Como sabéis los viernes os suelo traer escritores invitados y sus novedades literarias. Hoy os traigo a Frank Spoiler, que ha venido de invitado en varias ocasiones, ya que su obra es de los más variada: micro-relatos, novelas de terror, y poesía… (de momento).

Frank Spoiler (nombre real: Francisco Javier Sánchez Mira) es un escritor de poesía nacido en Badajoz en el año 1961 al que sus padres traerían a vivir a Cataluña en el año 1973. De padre albañil y de madre dedicada a sus labores. Comenzó a escribir a la temprana edad de quince años, llevado por la afición de uno de sus hermanos (un admirador del poeta Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer). As you know, on Fridays I bring you guest authors and new books. Lola Mariné, today’s author, is a member of a group of writers in Spanish I belong to, and like me, she also comes from Barcelona. Reseña de ‘La Piel del Pecado’ de Francis Molehorn. Incesto y mucho más.

Hola a todos:

Hoy es martes,  y como durante mi viaje me dio tiempo a leer un poco aprovecho para compartir la reseña de un libro que me tenía intrigada hacía tiempo.

La piel del pecado, de Francis Molehorn

La piel del pecado de Francis Molehorn. Ética, moral, bondad, maldad y todo lo demás.

La piel del pecado es la segunda novela que leo de Francis Molehorn, después de Están haciendo Casablanca que me gustó mucho. Había leído muchos comentarios sobre La piel del pecado y me intrigaba saber qué tratamiento habría dado la autora a un tema tan complicado y peliagudo como el incesto.

No soy una lectora que disfrute las lecturas eróticas, y de hecho las tolero en pequeñas dosis si la novela me interesa (y como solía decirse de las películas y los desnudos hace años, “lo requiere el guion”. No sé yo si me acostumbraré alguna vez en la vida a la nueva regla de la Academia de que guion no lleva acento, pero en fin…). En esta novela, supongo que por razones obvias, hay escenas eróticas. Sí, incestuosas. He de reconocer que aunque no he leído muchas del género, las he leído aún más explícitas, pero no os la recomiendo si ese tipo de lectura no os va. Desde luego es una lectura para adultos.

Yo no tengo hijos (ni hijas) así que no puedo comentar si el hecho de ponerse en la piel del pecado (de Ángela, la protagonista) sería más duro o difícil (o viceversa) si lo sois. Cada uno debe saber qué tipo de moralidad gasta y cuáles son las cosas que le parecen intolerables.

La protagonista, psicóloga y profesora de universidad, Ángela Bennett, es una mujer a la que le gusta cuestionar las reglas y los dogmas. El hecho de que trabaje en una universidad Católica provoca los problemas que os podéis imaginar, y algunos que quizá no, aunque de hecho ella no intenta ofender en particular, pero no va a comulgar (valga la expresión) con ideas que le parecen poco científicas, o con la intolerancia y el afán de anular la capacidad de raciocinio de la juventud.

Debido a un artículo que ella había publicado años antes de trabajar en la universidad, se entabla una guerra entre los sectores más conservadores de entre los padres de los alumnos, y la profesora. Y parece que los “justos” según ellos, no tienen miramientos en cuanto a los métodos a usar para vencer.

La novela es intrigante en cuanto a lo que muestra de los entresijos de ciertas instituciones, y la variedad de ideas, morales y éticas, que baraja. La relación entre Ángela y su hijo Darren es interesante, penséis lo que penséis sobre la cuestión del sexo, aunque no creo que a demasiados la lectura les resulte confortable por la normalización de la relación sexual entre ellos. Incluso la propia protagonista, hacia el final del libro, se plantea si no debe haber razones poderosas detrás del tabú contra tales relaciones. Naturalmente, desde los clásicos griegos y Edipo, pasando por Freud y el complejo así llamado, el tema ha sido estudiado y teorizado. Leer sobre ello en teoría en un libro académico, y pasar a la práctica, o incluso leerlo en una historia de ficción ambientada en la época moderna, parece muy distinto.

Legalmente, como bien saben los enemigos de Bennett, el incesto es un delito. Uno se pregunta si a pesar de la mayoría de edad, uno no se plantearía el que la relación es una de influencia y poder en el que las dos partes no están en igualdad de condiciones (por bien educado, independiente y liberado que esté Darren).  Yo también me planteaba, al leerlo, especialmente los comentarios de Ángela de lo bien que encajan sus cuerpos, si no hay rasgos de Pigmalión (ya puestos a considerar la Mitología) en la relación, y de narcisismo. Si el hijo es una parte de nosotros y nuestra creación, ¿no nos amamos a nosotros mismos a través de ellos?

El mundo particular que se presenta en la novela está más allá de la moralidad al uso. De hecho, el orden “natural” y establecido de la sociedad está representado por los antagonistas de Ángela, que demuestran una falta de moralidad total, y de hecho son criminales. Por otro lado, lo que muchos considerarían amoral, es posiblemente beneficioso, o al menos, extrañamente “inocente”. No me refiero exclusivamente a la relación entre Ángela y su hijo. También la novia del amigo de Darren decide que acostarse con él la ayudará a superar el abuso que sufrió hace años, y todos están de acuerdo. Los personajes crean una moralidad propia que parece más sana que la impuesta, aunque no espero que todo el mundo esté de acuerdo.

Ángela se plantea la ética de su victoria final, ya que hay una gran ironía en el desenlace de la novela. La falta de imaginación de los “malos” los llevan a crear crímenes inexistentes y a pasarse por alto algo que no pueden ni siquiera concebir sea realidad.

La autora escribe muy bien, mantiene un ritmo ágil durante todo el libro, y crea unos personajes llenos de detalles sutiles y matices que los hacen reconocibles e identificables. Estemos de acuerdo o no con los planteamientos y las ideas de los protagonistas, resultará imposible leerse esta novela sin plantearse principios éticos y morales arraigados en nuestra sociedad. Y eso, para mí, siempre será lo que distingue a un gran libro, de uno entretenido de consumición fácil. No se la recomiendo a todos los lectores, pero si os atrevéis a explorar los límites de la moralidad al uso, y tenéis la mente abierta, no os la perdáis.

Ya sé que me he enrollado bastante, pero os prometo que el libro no lo hace.

Review of ‘Scrivener Essentials’ and ‘The Proposal’. Work and pleasure to keep the balance.

Following on from my short break, where I had a chance to catch up on some reading, I wanted to share some of my most recent reviews. And today I decided on sharing two fairly short books, but completely different.

First, for all the writers who’ve been wondering about Scrivener, or might even have purchased it and wanted a set of easy instructions:

Scrivener Essentials by Karen Prince

SCRIVENER ESSENTIALS: A Quick Start Visual Guide For Windows Users by Karen Prince. Easy visual advice from an expert user.

 After hearing many positive comments about Scrivener from other authors, and taking advantage of an offer, I purchased the programme. I went through the video presentation of the features, and I’ve checked other explanations, but they all seemed very convoluted and difficult to remember at the time of actually getting down to writing. Due to that I’d so far hesitated trying to launch a full-blown project in Scrivener.

Thankfully, this book came to the rescue. It is a step-by-step guide, and best still, visual. That means you can actually open the programme and have the book by your side, allowing you to check as you go along. For me, always looking for that button at the bottom right, under the double line, with a non-descript indicator on it, having an arrow pointing, makes a big difference. Another beauty is that the writer, an author herself, gives us her personal tips, things she has discovered through use, that are invaluable (and will not appear in any of the impersonal, “how-to” guides).

The discovery of this short gem has made me feel more confident in trying and using Scrivener. I recommend it to all writers, who, like me, have been wondering for a while about the programme, but been scared by what appear to be never-ending complex explanations. Thanks Karen Prince!

And, a short while back I saw this book, The Proposal was free and downloaded it. I needed a light read at the time, and I leave you the review I wrote. When I checked at the moment of preparing this post, it’s still free so, if you fancy it, don’t hesitate!

The Proposal by Lily Zante

The Proposal (A Perfect Match series. Book 1) by Lily Zante. A fun, light read that will keep you turning the pages.

Is a male escort the Perfect Match for a high flying executive creative director of an advertising company? If you read The Proposal you’ll have the answer. Of course, Ethan is much more than just an escort and Nadine isn’t your standard executive either. However, as many tell her through the book; she could end up being one if she doesn’t listen to her heart.

The Proposal reminded me of the movie The Wedding Date that is one of my guilty pleasures. I can’t resist to carry on watching it every time I find it flicking through TV channels. It has a similar plot although in the case of Nadine her difficulties are mostly to do with her professional life. Nadine is a driven woman, focused on her career, who has put her personal life on hold to pursue her goals. She’s pressured by her bitch of a boss, Sandra, and needs to make a good impression during a marketing convention. She needs a boyfriend to share the weekend with her and here is where Ethan, whom she met while he was performing as part of a stripper trio, comes in.

The Proposal is a fun, easy read, with engaging central characters that pull the story together and some fabulous scenes that will make you wish it was a movie.

If you like chic-lit and are looking for a quick and cheerful read you’d be well advised to give it a go. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Agosto. Novedad literaria de Juan Re Crivello y unos cuantos escritores más (entre ellos, una servidora!)

Hola a todos.

Como sabéis los viernes os traigo novedad literaria. Hace unas semanas un escritor al que conozco hace tiempo, Juan Re Crivello, que mantiene un blog muy activo donde comparte y crea una variedad de series de escritura, que en muchos casos luego ven la publicación, me comentó que andaba buscando contribuidores para un proyecto para hacer más llevadero el mes de Agosto. Variedad era el motto, y aunque en aquel momento no estaba segura de que se me ocurriese nada, al ir leyendo las contribuciones de Juan y otros compañeros, me animé.

El proyecto ha sido publicado. Se llama:

Agosto de Juan Re Crivello y unos cuantos…

Agosto es un libro escrito durante el mes de más calor en Barcelona. En este trabajo, Juan re crivello se propuso escribir artículos cortos con gran belleza descriptiva y una intensa opinión para conmover al lector. Luego invitó a otros nueve escritores españoles estableciendo la misma regla literaria.

De ese trabajo, Agosto suma intensas reflexiones, frescas a veces, o llenas de sorpresa ante el mundo que nos rodea. Dirá al respecto juan re crivello:

“Aquel verano del 2014 puso fin a un año de un intenso dolor espiritual ante la enfermedad de un familiar que pudo superar su mal, pero que como autor me impedía ni siquiera plantearme publicar.
