                            Nell sighed as she entered the little girl’s bedchamber. The crisp cotton bedcovers were crumpled and misplaced from their usual perfection. Her long strands of chestnut hair, an interwoven decorative remembrance, lay across the pillowcases. The darkened room and its melancholic mood were now aglow as a powdery light filtered between an opening in the drapes, eerie in appearance. To her it looked as though minute crystals hung in a display of elegance.Abigale was now a mere memory, though one held ardently within the fabric of Nell’s heart. The empty room, once filled with happiness and hours of laughter, was now an empty shroud of yesterdays gone by.Nell ruched up the coarse material of her skirt between her fingers and knelt down, her knees instantly chilled by the stone hearth as she warmed herself before the open coals. She felt angered, for the winter months had been particularly harsh this year. Cruel, she thought to herself.She gave a sideways glance and from the corner of her eye caught sight of winter’s first snowflakes. Abigale adored the snow, and had done from a very early age. Even when the end was nigh and breaths were hard to take, she was still able to offer Nell a paper-thin smile as she sat holding her hand and watched her fade away. Words were not needed, for she knew how much she was loved.Her mourning brought with it a cold reality that broke through the silence. How she would miss that beautiful girl, snatched from life so cruelly at only twelve years of age.Nell meandered towards the window, and lifting her arm slightly pushed aside the heavy velvet drapes, allowing in more light which danced around the walls of the bedchamber, illuminating the bold wooden panelling and turning the numerous tapestries into a rich display of artistry.She folded her arms neatly across her chest, pulling in her petite frame. A heavy sigh passed between her lips as she cast her gaze far out across the fifty-acre gardens. A three-tiered landscape opened up before her. Her eyes embraced an open fan of evergreens, their branches kissed by the frost, leaving only the briefest of imprints. Sporadic stepping stones weaved their way from one tier to the next, and a small stream appeared to join their divide where snowflakes fell, their individuality lost forever. Its dramatic incline gave the extensive gardens an illusion of endlessness.Nell was overwhelmed by a sudden feeling of freedom. After all the heartache, how she relished the thought of what a new beginning would bring. Perhaps she would find employment as a teacher, a path she found to be most agreeable. In her opinion she needed a change; her role of governess was all played out. The position had brought with it much isolation; she was shunned by the servants, and not valued by her employers, so she found herself to be neither fish nor fowl in the estate. She was a middle-class lady, for all intents and purposes, and it was only due to her parents’ lack of wealth that she had to seek employment; but this had prevented her from being considered an equal alongside that echelon.A warm glow inside ignited her imagination, throwing her into a fictional world where words, lines and chapters from the countless books she had read came to life, filling her mind with hope. How different her life could be if she were to become a leading lady in one of the novels she had read, how her dreams could lift her from the monotony of the life she led. The picture she painted in her mind was herself as a beautiful butterfly — a red admiral — hovering high above the world, visiting flower gardens. A peppering of light auburn streaks highlighted his sideburns and deep-brown hair. She could feel his eyes as they penetrated her own, and their softness ebbed. His eyes were like dark pools of the most unusual colour, a gunmetal grey, deep set, cold and unfeeling. She held his gaze, difficult though it was. A silence fell, broken only by the constant tapping of Mr Buchannan’s shoe on the floorboards.“No, my dear,” he said abruptly, taking a step forwards. “I find it hard to comprehend that such a handsome creature as yourself could be no more than a mere governess.”Nell frowned; she felt his words to be both belittling and complimentary, if that were possible. His tone was harsh, and it held an annoyance that she was unable to read. His offhandedness forced her to lower her eyes, immediately returning her to her station. My ReviewDisturbingly Beautiful was a glorious and rich read. I enjoyed it far better than The Untimely series, and I loved those books! With the perfect mix of regency and time travel elements, it makes for an enjoyable read. There's a few twists and turns that make you cry out and yell at the book. I totally recommend this to anyone.

The Key in the Keyword - A Marketing Secret from L.L. Hunter

Marketing is one of the hardest parts about self publishing, of all publishing really.

In my experience, these days, big publishing house are doing less and less for authors in the terms of marketing. The authors are forced to do this themselves. (I feel you should anyway. Being 'visible' is important.) In this post i am going to tell you a little something i learned during the brief time I was with my agent. It wasn't all for nothing!

If you self publish using KDP, (Kindle Direct Publishing), D2D (Draft 2 Digital) or Smashwords, or want to in the future, i am going to give you a little tip that will hopefully give you good sales and visibility in the online stores.

See, there is this thing called a keyword.

What is a keyword you ask?

In terms of publishing, a keyword can be crucial and if you get it right, then it can be a VERY handy marketing tool.

You should:

* Choose categories you think your book fits under.

When a publishing site asks you to choose which categories to place your book under, they only give you only 2 options.

What if my book fits into more than 2?

Ah, now this is where the keywords come to use.

The key to making the most out of the categories, is to choose 1 BIG category such as Contemporary romance, or Science Fiction, and 1 SMALL one. For example; sports fiction. (There are more general categories you could use, such as just choosing fiction > romance, but it almost impossible to be found there. Let's make this a little easy for you!)

So your categories should look something like this…

Literature and Fiction > Romance > Contemporary > New Adult and College > Sports

or

Literature and Fiction > Romance > Science Fiction and Fantasy > Teen and Young Adult > Dystopian

Now you may be wondering how come there are several categories listed at the bottom of each book's product page (on Amazon), well this due to the keywords!

After you have chosen your categories on the publishing sites, below it should ask you for keywords.

In this box you:

*Add any other category you think your book may fit under. Eg; for a paranormal romance, you may add urban fantasy (if its in a city setting).
* Mention the type of paranormal creature the book features, such as; vampires, angels, demons, ghosts etc. 
* The age group you think the book is targeted to. Young Adult, New Adult etc.

Most sites have a max of about 7 keywords, so make sure you choose 7 of the most crucial ones.

Now, remember above how i said choose 1 big and 1 small category?

This is because of the Amazon Algorithms.

There are a few loop holes in the algorithms, and if you find those, then congrats, you are on your way to a successful publishing career. It is all about playing with and researching the market.

Behaving on the Internet. You're not invisible

I didn't want to have to add my 2 cents. I hate drama. Its like highschool. I left that place for a reason. But that's what the online world is turning into: a virtual playground for bullies and gossips.

And you know what makes it worse? People in the public eye bahaving like this.

If you have created a brand, a product or are widely known for doing something, you are a celebrity. You are NOT invisible. It doesn't matter if you are walking down the street or sitting behind your computer or device, the same rules apply. Its time you start acting like the kind of role model you want your kids to look up to.

I'm not going to tell you what you should be doing, common sense applies here. Sadly some people lack common sense.

RUDENESS:

When you walk into a shop would you demand one of their products for free?
No, you wouldn't. The same rule applies to owners of online stores. You do not approach your favourite author and demand that they give you their book for free. Its rude!

Authors: readers are the people who buy your books. You do not want to scare them away by being rude. Remember the shop scenario i mentioned above? Same rule applies. You run a business, you need to apply business practises. The number one rule of customer service is: keep the customers coming back for more.

This leads me to my next point.

FIRST IMPRESSION:

When you make your mark on the world, you want it to be good and memorable. You want people to recognise you for your brand and what you write (I am going to use authors as the main example here but this could apply to anything). You do not want your brand to be that you're a rude nasty person.
First impressions are everything! They can make or break a career. Be nice and behave in front of your customers! You will not sell anything and those customers you just scared away will go and tell others how rude and nasty you were. Bad gossip spreads faster than good gossip.

SOCIAL MEDIA ETIQUETTE

Most artists, celebrities and businesses have Facebook pages and Twitter accounts. You know what? Not only your Mum can see those! Shock! Horror!
If you do not want your Mum to see how you behave online, you do not want the world to see that bahaviour. If you receive a bad reputation for spreading rumours online, being rude to customers/ other people you work with… well, this will only end bad for you. Karma has a nasty bite and she will come back sevenfold to bite you in the bum sooner or later.
Don't gossip, don't name drop the names of other people who have mishaved, you do not want to jump on the drama train, trust me. You have much better things in your life that you should be focusing on. Like your next release! Eep! How exciting!

My Review:

Disengage all distractions, fake a sickie because you will not want to be distracted while reading this book. Ms Phoenix has done it again. She has this uncanny ability to write suspense like its second nature to her. I don't think I'm going to sleep tonight! While some plot points kept me guessing, I knew who the killer was from the start! Not Ms Phoenix's fault. I like putting the clues together and often get it right. She planted the clues perfectly. Kissing Trouble is full of terrifying suspense, steamy romance and relatable, life like characters. I totally recommend this be your next read! 5/5 sparkly stars
