Fluid Restrictions for Kidney Failure
What does fluid restriction mean?
When you have kidney failure your body is unable to filter and control the amount of liquids in your body. Fluid restrictions refers to the limitation of fluids you put into your body to prevent an overload of fluids in your system. This means drinking less fluids and also controlling the amount of certain foods you eat that contain a large amount of fluid.
What is the point of fluid restriction?
When your body is unable to filter out the amount of fluids it should due to kidney failure, your body could react badly to an overload of fluids. When your body cannot get rid of excess fluids, it can result in worsening health conditions. Health problems can start with headaches, feeling sluggish, shortness of breath, and increase to more severe health conditions. Fluid overload can cause high blood pressure and severe swelling of the extremities, called edema.
Edema is the buildup of fluids in your body that causes swelling. Edema usually starts in your ankles and moves up your body. If left untreated, the swelling and fluids could travel up and settle in your lungs. This is a life threatening condition called pulmonary edema.
The amount of fluid restrictions is directly related to the level of kidney failure. The higher the function of the kidneys, the better able your body is to flush out excess fluids. Your doctors will help you determine what level of fluid restriction you need to follow.
What about dialysis?
Dialysis is an artificial replacement for the function of your kidneys. It can help you with fluid retention by helping to rid your body of excess fluids; however it cannot do all of the work for you. First of all, dialysis is typically only done for a few hours two or three times a week. Your body’s fluid levels need to be controlled at all times. Not only that, but the better you are able to control your fluid intake, the more comfortable dialysis will be for you.
How does fluid restriction affect the foods I eat?
The foods we eat often contain significant amounts of fluids. Depending on your level of fluid restriction, you will need to monitor all forms of fluid intake. Foods like soup, ice cream, jello, popsicles, gravy and even syrup can make a big difference. Your sodium intake also can have a large impact on how much fluid your body retains. Stay away from salt and high sodium foods. Instead, look for foods that are marked as “low sodium” or have no salt added.
What are some steps I can take to restrict fluids in my diet?
Start by drinking fewer fluids. If you are thirsty, only drink a small amount of water or consider sucking on ice chips instead of filling a glass. Be wary of the foods you eat. Stick to low sodium foods that do not have a high fluid content. If soups or cereals are on the menu, try eating them with a fork to drain off some of the fluid.
Avoid over excursion or overheating. When your body is working too hard or gets overheated, it will crave fluid and make you very thirsty. Try to avoid these situations.
Remember that every bit of fluid counts. Take note of every sip. Even the sip of water you use to take your medicines needs to be accounted for.
If you have been put on a fluid restriction diet for kidney failure, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed. Fluid restriction may seem daunting, but once you are taking steps to control your fluid intake you will notice how much better you feel. You will get the hang of it, and it will make all the difference.

Renal Diet Headquarters Podcast 004 – Lowering the Salt In Your Renal Diet
This week I am discussing all the ways you can lower the salt in your diet. It’s important for all kinds of reasons to lower the salt in your diet.
I discuss several strategies – like lowering the salt in your breakfast meal without adding phosphorus and potassium. I also talk about ways to ensure you are feeling full at that meal so it lasts all day. You can also learn about foods and snacks that make great foods to take with you and what are the high potassium, high phosphorus and high sodium foods in your diet. Salt can be important to some recipes, but not all of them. Finally, I am talking about spices that enhance the flavor of the meal – like lemon and vinegar. And much more.

Renal Diet Headquarters Podcast 003 – Habits Are Better Than Goals
This week I delve into the concept of creating habits that are stronger than goals. While we discussed goals last time, many of the concepts are actually good ways to change your habits. I talk in detail about how goals might be short lived, but a habit is a much more long term plan. I also talk about the time that I moved from saying “I can’t” to “I choose not to” and how it changed my life! So I want it to change yours as well.
Finally, add your comment to the post about what challenge you want to take on! I am challenging myself to create 52 podcasts this year – I am on #2!

Drinks for Renal Diet Patients
What about drinks for a renal diet?
Renal diet patients have many dietary restrictions. They are all necessary in order to maintain optimal health and promote positive kidney health from this point forward. For all the restrictions on food, however, it’s the restrictions on drinks for renal diet patients that often receive the strongest reactions.
Some consider drinks to be very near and dear to their hearts — especially their personal preferences. People have preferences and no other drinks will do. If you have any doubts, try to convince die hard tea advocates to switch to coffee (or try the reverse). It isn’t pretty. These great tips can help you maintain your sanity while getting better mileage from your drinks for renal diet needs even if you’re facing fluid restrictions.
Choose Drinks with Extreme Temperatures
Drinking drinks that are either extremely hot or extremely cold forces you to sip more slowly. This makes the drink, and the pleasure it provides, last even longer. Hot apple cider, hot tea, hot cocoa, ice cold beverages, and the like each represent temperature extremes that force drinkers to slow their drinking. Consuming fewer drinks throughout the day is a worthy, and sometimes necessary goal. This will help.
Add Festive Touches to the Drinks You Have
Little things like adding cranberries or cherries to lemon-lime soda can greatly increase your appreciation of the drinks for renal diet enjoyment. Some people like to add peppermint sticks to hot cocoa, while others enjoy hot apple cider with a slice of apple and a stick of cinnamon. Also, if you’re approaching holidays, try to select drinks that are a good match for the holiday in question. Hot apple cider, for instance, is a good match for many winter holidays.
Avoid Drinks that Increase Thirst
Some drinks leave you feeling thirstier after drinking them than when you began. Whether it’s the result of high sodium content or other factors (it may even be something that’s completely mental), doesn’t matter, the fact remains that these are not good drinks for renal diet needs. The goal is to reduce your intake of liquids to avoid the unnecessary buildup of fluids in your body. With that in mind, it’s simple smart drinking to get rid of high sodium drinks altogether.
Resist the Temptation to Over-Indulge
At one point in life, it may have been all about resisting the temptation to over-indulge in specific beverages. When you’re facing renal failure, the focus shifts.
Your goal suddenly becomes one of limiting drinks for renal diet success — all drinks. If you’re on fluid restrictions already, follow the plan. If not, but in later stages of chronic kidney disease, it’s simply smart planning to begin restricting your fluids, to some degree, in anticipation of further restrictions down the road — and to give your kidneys a chance to catch up.
It’s not always easy to know the right drinks for renal diet needs, but following the tips above will help you avoid a few critical mistakes that could slow your progress and increase any damage that’s been done.

Kidney Disease Labs: “Kidney Disease: Common Labs and Medical Terminology”
The Patient’s Perspective, Volume 4 of 12
Every week I receive questions via email and phone about lab results, like what should I do if or what does this mean. So, I decided to write a book in my Renal Diet HQ IQ series on labs and terminology. Kidney disease labs are important in the understanding of what is actually going on with your kidneys. It is important to be able to have a knowledgeable conversation with your physician about your lab numbers and be able to understand what the nurse and doctor are taking about when you are around.
Kidney disease labs and medical terminology will keep you up to date on the latest jargon. Anemia, Dyslipidemia, Electrolyte Balance and Kidney function all are terms that mean something to me, should mean something to you and will after you read this book. Stages of kidney failure, blood sugars, bone conditions and protein all are important and are discussed with in this read. I know that your doctor has overwhelmed you with big words and terms, no fear, follow this short read to a better understanding.

Renal Diet Headquarters Podcast 002 – Goal Setting For A New Year
Welcome to the Renal Diet Headquarters podcast – hosted by Mathea Ford, RD/LD. This podcast is all about goal setting and how to make great resolutions for the New Year. While I don’t always recommend making resolutions, you can find some great tips on how to set new goals and make them stick.
We talk about looking back at your last year – ways to help you be more consistent. Some patterns might emerge and you can identify the things you are doing consistently well. Then identify the things that you are not doing well and see if you can understand what went wrong. You can identify the ways that you are possibly sabotaging yourself. Then look forward at the new year and what you should expect it to be – talk to a future version of yourself. Make a big goal, then break it down into smaller goals. Create SMART goals and break them down then identify daily actions you can take to be successful. Finally, track your goals. And make yourself accountable to someone, then adjust when necessary.

Making Kidney Smart Choices to Avoid Renal Failure
Chronic kidney disease is no picnic for anyone. In fact, it can be a downright scary time. Sometime, you may even feel a little bit hopeless. The fact is, that kidney failure is not inevitable. The sooner you begin making kidney smart choices, the better your odds are of stopping the progression into full renal failure. These are a few of the choices you definitely want to make.
Quit Smoking
Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Do not wait for a New Year’s resolution. Quit smoking today. It’s that important. Not only does smoking increase your risks of full renal failure, it also hastens the process.
Additionally, smoking places greater strain on your heart and lungs creating situations where heart disease and lung function may be impaired. There’s no good that can result in spending another day smoking. If you’re struggling to quit, talk to your doctor about prescriptive help in your efforts to quit. There are no more important and directly beneficial kidney smart choices you can make than to quit smoking now.
Get Active in Your Daily Life
While not quite as beneficial among kidney smart choices as quitting smoking, getting active has a few fringe benefits of its own. People who are active enjoy a better quality of life than those who lead sedentary lifestyles.
Activity gives you exercise that doesn’t necessarily feel like exercise and being active keeps the blood flowing throughout your body, which moves minerals, nutrients, and oxygen to the places it needs to reach in order to be used by the body.
Take Control of Your Treatment
So often, by the time people reach the stage where they’re entering into kidney failure, they’ve been “victims” of circumstance in their health so long they don’t know any other way to be. It doesn’t have to be that way and it cannot be that way if you’re serious about making kidney smart choices. You must become an active participant in your health plan in order to make it work this time around.
You can’t passively let things happen to you as you approach kidney failure and hope it will work itself out. It won’t. It’s up to you to make kidney smart choices and one of the first choices needs to be to inform yourself about your condition, the risks, the responsibilities, and the next steps you need to take.
Why is it so important to make kidney smart choices?
The kidneys are vital organs that are necessary for eliminating toxins and fluids from the body. When they don’t operate as they should, these things remain within the body longer, leading to bigger health problems down the road. Sometimes the path leads to dialysis and a new way of living for you.
Making kidney smart choices now can stop the progression of kidney disease, but you must begin making those choices today. The sooner you accomplish this particular mission, the greater kidney function you’ll be able to maintain.
