How To Make Homemade Strawberry Cobbler

Making this strawberry cobbler is as easy as mixing a few ingredients and letting the oven do the work! With just a handful of steps, you’ll have a warm, bubbly dessert perfect for sharing.

Pre-heat the oven to 375'F. Cut/clean the strawberries and cut the strawberries into small pieces. Place them in an 8 or 9 inch by 13 inch baking dish (based on the amount in the recipe).

In a medium sized bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder and sugar.

Add the egg and mix with a mixer until mixture is crumbly.

Then dice up the room temperature butter, and put in the bowl, then using the beaters, mix it together until completely incorporated. It will still appear crumbly.

Spread this over the berries.  Bake for 45-50 minutes, depending on how brown you want the crust. Make sure the filling is bubbling. Cool slightly. Serves 6 from a 9x13 pan.

Hint: Place the baking dish on a cookie sheet to catch any bubbling over while baking.

FAQs For Old Fashioned Strawberry CobblerWhat size baking dish should I use for this cobbler?

An 8x8-inch or 9x13-inch baking dish works well. The smaller size will yield a thicker layer of topping, while the larger dish will spread the cobbler thinner.

How can I tell when the cobbler is done?

The cobbler is ready when the topping is golden brown, and the fruit filling is bubbling around the edges, typically after 45-50 minutes of baking.

Can I prepare this cobbler ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble the cobbler a few hours in advance and store it covered in the refrigerator until ready to bake. Let it sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before baking.

What’s the best way to prevent the cobbler from being too watery?

If your strawberries are particularly juicy, you can toss them with a teaspoon of cornstarch before placing them in the baking dish to help thicken the filling.

FAQs About Blackeyed Peas RecipesCan I use canned black-eyed peas instead of fresh or frozen?

It’s best to use fresh or frozen peas for this recipe to keep potassium levels manageable. If you must use canned peas, rinse them thoroughly to reduce sodium and potassium content.

What is the difference between crowder peas and black-eyed peas?

Crowder peas are a variety of cowpeas, like black-eyed peas, but they have a creamier texture and a more earthy, robust flavor. Black-eyed peas, on the other hand, are slightly firmer and have a milder, nuttier taste. Both can be used in similar recipes with slight flavor variations.

How do I know when the peas are fully cooked?

The peas should be tender but not mushy. Taste a few during cooking to check for doneness.

Essential Foods for Every Stage of Chronic Kidney Disease CKD-Podcast

Renal Diet HQ Podcast Should I Eat White Bread Or Wheat Bread On A Kidney Diet

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects millions worldwide, and proper nutrition plays a crucial role in managing this condition. Whether you're newly diagnosed or navigating advanced stages, understanding how your diet impacts your health is essential. This guide provides practical advice for managing CKD through tailored dietary choices.

For More Recipes and Ideas --->> Get Your Free Meals and Recipes That Are Perfect for Pre-Dialysis Diets, Pre-Dialysis with Diabetes, or Dialysis Diets.

Why Nutrition Matters in CKD Management

Nutrition isn't just about avoiding certain foods; it's about including the right ones to support kidney function and overall well-being. CKD progresses through five stages, and your dietary needs may change at each step. For example:

Early stages might allow more flexibility with protein and potassium.Advanced stages require stricter control of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus intake.

Working closely with your healthcare provider to customize your diet based on your CKD stage is key to managing the disease effectively.

Key Nutritional Goals:Reduce Sodium: Helps control blood pressure and fluid retention.Limit Potassium and Phosphorus: Prevents complications such as heart problems and bone issues.Balance Protein: Ensures adequate nutrition without overloading the kidneys.

By understanding these principles, you can create meals that are both kidney-friendly and nutrient-dense.

Foods to Include for CKD

Despite dietary restrictions, there are plenty of delicious, kidney-friendly foods. Here are some of the best options for supporting kidney health:

Low-Potassium Fruits: Apples, cranberries, blueberries.Vegetables: Cauliflower, red bell peppers, mushrooms.Lean Proteins: Fish, egg whites, poultry.Healthy Fats: Olive oil, avocado (in moderation).Whole Grains: Oats, quinoa.

Many recipes online incorporate these ingredients, making it easy to maintain a balanced diet while enjoying flavorful meals.

Foods to Avoid for Kidney Health

Certain foods can strain your kidneys and should be minimized or avoided altogether:

Processed Snacks: High in sodium and refined sugars.Red Meat: Contains saturated fats that can elevate cholesterol and strain kidney function.Dairy Products: Often high in phosphorus.Refined Sugars: Can cause blood sugar spikes and worsen kidney-related complications.

Instead, focus on plant-based alternatives like legumes, nuts, and seeds, which provide essential nutrients without overloading your kidneys.

The Importance of Portion Control

For individuals with CKD, portion control is as important as food selection. Overeating—even healthy foods—can lead to an imbalance in nutrient intake.

Tips for Portion Management:Use measuring cups or food scales to ensure consistency.Divide meals into smaller, more frequent portions throughout the day.Pre-plan and prep meals to avoid impulsive eating.

Portion control helps you meet your nutritional goals without overburdening your kidneys.

Sodium Reduction Strategies

Sodium management is critical for CKD patients. Excess sodium can increase blood pressure and fluid retention, worsening kidney function. Aim to keep sodium intake below 2,300 mg daily or follow your doctor’s specific recommendations.

Simple Ways to Reduce Sodium:Cook with herbs and spices instead of salt.Choose fresh or frozen foods over canned products.Check food labels for “low sodium” or “no salt added” options.Request no-salt-added meals when dining out.

With these strategies, you can still enjoy flavorful meals while protecting your kidney health.

Why a Plant-Based Diet Works

Plant-based diets are especially beneficial for CKD patients. They are rich in essential nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber, all of which promote overall health and reduce inflammation. Additionally, they offer high-quality proteins without overworking the kidneys.

Benefits of a Plant-Based Diet:Lower cholesterol and blood pressure.Reduced risk of CKD progression.Improved energy levels and mental well-being.

Incorporating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts into your meals can transform your diet into a powerhouse of nutrition.

Monitoring Your Food Choices

Keeping track of your meals helps ensure you're meeting your nutritional needs. Use a food journal or mobile app to log your meals, snacks, and beverages. This practice helps identify nutrient gaps and allows for adjustments.

Meal Planning Tips:Work with a dietitian to create a tailored meal plan.Use portion control tools like measuring cups.Prepare meals ahead of time to avoid last-minute unhealthy choices.

By staying organized and proactive, you can maintain a kidney-friendly diet without feeling overwhelmed.

Building a CKD-Friendly Meal Plan

A well-structured meal plan simplifies your dietary journey. Consult a dietitian to ensure your plan aligns with your CKD stage and personal health needs.

Quick Meal Ideas:Breakfast: Oatmeal topped with blueberries and almond slices.Lunch: Grilled chicken salad with olive oil dressing.Dinner: Baked fish with roasted cauliflower and quinoa.

Flavor your meals with fresh herbs, garlic, or lemon juice instead of salty condiments for a satisfying and kidney-safe diet.

Final Thoughts: Thriving with CKD

Living with CKD requires dedication, but with the right dietary choices, you can lead a fulfilling and healthy life. Focus on lean proteins, low-potassium fruits and vegetables, and heart-healthy fats. Stay proactive with meal planning and work closely with healthcare professionals to adjust your diet as needed.

Substitutions For A Stuffing with Vegetables

For those needing to tailor the Vegetable Stuffing to specific dietary requirements, these substitutions can help maintain kidney health without sacrificing flavor.

Low-Sodium Broth Alternatives: Opt for homemade vegetable broth or water infused with herbs if low-sodium broth is unavailable.Replace Eggs: Use a flaxseed mixture (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed 3 tablespoons water per egg) as an egg substitute for those managing cholesterol intake. No Balsamic Vinegar: Substitute balsamic vinegar with apple cider vinegar or a splash of lemon juice to reduce acidity and match CKD requirements.

These tips, variations, and substitutions ensure this stuffing remains versatile, flavorful, and suited to your kidney-friendly lifestyle.

Perfectly Done Vegetable StuffingVariations on Stuffing Recipe with Vegetables

To make this Stuffing with Vegetables even more adaptable to your dietary needs, consider trying these CKD-friendly variations. Each option ensures you can enjoy new flavors while staying within safe nutritional limits.

Whole Grain Twist: Use whole-grain bread for added fiber if tolerated, which can support better digestion and kidney health.Add Fresh Herbs: Substitute dried poultry seasoning with a blend of fresh thyme, rosemary, and sage for a burst of natural flavor without added sodium.Vegetable Variety: Swap out carrots for parsnips or add diced bell peppers for a slightly different taste that remains low in potassium.Storage

To keep your Vegetable Stuffing fresh and maintain its CKD-friendly qualities, follow these storage tips:

Refrigeration: Store any leftover stuffing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Be sure to let it cool completely before sealing it in the container to prevent moisture buildup.Freezing: For longer storage, freeze the stuffing in individual portions or a single large container. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, then place it in a freezer-safe bag or container. It can be stored for up to 2-3 months. When ready to eat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven for the best texture.Reheating: To reheat, cover the stuffing with foil and warm it in the oven at 350°F for about 20-25 minutes, or until heated through. This helps maintain its moisture and ensures the top stays crispy. You can also reheat individual portions in the microwave, but the oven method keeps the texture better.

These storage methods will help you enjoy your Vegetable Stuffing safely and conveniently while keeping it fresh and kidney-friendly.

Top TipUse Day-Old Bread: If possible, use slightly stale bread, as it absorbs the broth better and gives the stuffing a great textureFAQs about Vegetarian Christmas StuffingCan I make this Vegetable Stuffing ahead of time?

Yes, you can prep the stuffing a day in advance! Prepare the vegetable mixture and toast the bread, then store both separately in the refrigerator. When ready to bake, simply combine the ingredients and proceed with the recipe as instructed.

Can I use a different type of bread for this recipe?

Absolutely! While French bread works well for this stuffing, you can substitute with whole-grain bread for added fiber, or gluten-free bread if you need a gluten-free option. Just make sure the bread is firm enough to hold up when mixed with the broth.

Is this recipe suitable for someone with high potassium levels?

Yes, this recipe is kidney-friendly, with low-potassium ingredients like celery, carrots, and mushrooms. However, if you're particularly sensitive to potassium, you can adjust the vegetables by limiting higher-potassium items or consulting with a healthcare provider for additional guidance.

Step 4of Boneless Pork Ribeye Roast with Pan Gravy

5. Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium - high heat. Once hot add the olive oil to the pan, and swirl around to ensure it coats the bottom of the pan. Add the roast and sear on all sides until it forms a nice crust, 5 minutes per side.

Step 5 Boneless Pork Ribeye Roast with Pan Gravy

6. Once the roast is seared, place the whole skillet in the preheated oven with the garlic side up. Roast the pork for about 18 minutes per pound, or the internal temperature of the roast reaches 145'F on a meat thermometer.

Step 9 of Boneless Pork Ribeye Roast with Pan Gravy

10. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, making sure to scrape the bottom of the skillet to incorporate any flavorful bits stuck to the bottom. Continue to cook the gravy until it thickens to your desired consistency - about 7-10 minutes.

11. After the roast has rested, slice it and serve with homemade gravy.

Hint: Searing the roast: Make sure the skillet is hot before adding the roast to ensure a perfect sear. This helps lock in the juices and gives the roast a delicious crust.

Reheating: When reheating, gently heat the pork and gravy separately in the microwave or on the stove, ensuring they reach a safe internal temperature of 165°F for food safety.Refrigeration: After the roast has cooled to room temperature, store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. This will help preserve the flavor and prevent bacterial growth.Freezing: If you have leftovers and want to store them for a longer period, slice the roast into individual portions, place them in airtight containers or freezer bags, and freeze for up to 2-3 months. Be sure to label the containers with the date for easy reference.Gravy Storage: Store any leftover homemade gravy separately in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply warm it on the stove over low heat, adding a little more broth if it thickens too much.Top TipGravy consistency: If your gravy thickens too much, add a little more low-sodium broth to reach your desired consistency. Always whisk gently to avoid lumps.FAQs about Boneless Pork Rib Roast In The OvenCan I use a different cut of pork for this recipe?

Yes, you can substitute the pork ribeye roast with a pork tenderloin or pork loin roast. Both cuts are leaner and still provide great flavor, though you may need to adjust cooking times based on the size and thickness of the meat.

How can I make the gravy even lower in sodium?

To reduce the sodium further, you can make your own low-sodium broth or use a homemade vegetable broth instead of store-bought low-sodium beef broth. This will give you more control over the sodium content while still providing a rich, flavorful gravy.

Can I prepare the pork ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the roast and sear it ahead of time, then refrigerate it. When ready to cook, simply reheat the roast in the oven until it reaches the desired internal temperature, and then make the gravy. This can save time for a busy weeknight meal.

Navigating Holiday Meals with CKD Tips for enjoying festive foods without worry-Podcast

The holiday season is here, bringing joy, togetherness, and delicious meals. But for those managing Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), festive foods can pose unique dietary challenges. With a little preparation and smart strategies, you can enjoy the holiday spirit without compromising your health. In this post, we’ll share tips to help you navigate holiday meals while sticking to your kidney-friendly diet.

Plan Ahead: Preparing for Holiday Meals

Preparation is key to enjoying holiday meals without worry.

Research the Menu Beforehand
If you’re attending a holiday gathering, try to learn what will be served ahead of time. This allows you to identify which dishes align with your dietary needs and avoid any surprises. Consider discussing your dietary restrictions with the host in advance so they’re aware of your requirements.Bring Your Own Dish
Bringing a kidney-friendly dish is a great way to ensure you have something safe and delicious to enjoy. Options like a festive salad or a low-potassium dessert can be wonderful additions to the table and something you can share with others.

By preparing in advance, you can reduce stress and fully enjoy the holiday experience.

Smart Choices at the Table

When it’s time to sit down for the meal, making informed decisions will help you stay on track.

Focus on Lean Proteins and Low-Potassium Vegetables
Choose lean proteins like chicken or fish and opt for vegetables such as green beans or carrots, which are kidney-friendly. Be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overloading on potassium, phosphorus, or other nutrients.Know Your Limits
If you’re unsure about certain dishes, stick to smaller portions or avoid them altogether. Balance is key—this way, you can enjoy a variety of foods without compromising your health.Handling Social Pressure

Navigating food-related social situations can be tricky, especially when others don’t fully understand your dietary restrictions.

Politely Decline Foods That Don’t Work for You
It’s okay to say no to foods that don’t align with your needs. Your health is your priority, and you don’t need to apologize for taking care of yourself. A polite “No, thank you” is enough.

Remember, your loved ones want you to enjoy the holidays—staying healthy is part of that enjoyment.

Stay Hydrated Within Your Limits

Proper hydration is essential, even more so during the holidays.

Choose Kidney-Friendly Beverages
Water is always a great option, and you can add a festive touch with a slice of lemon. If you’re on a fluid restriction, monitor your intake carefully throughout the event to stay within your limits.

By keeping hydration in check, you’ll feel better and stay on top of your health goals.

Enjoy the Holiday Beyond the Food

While food often takes center stage during the holidays, it’s important to remember that the season is about so much more.

Focus on Connection and Activities
Spend quality time with loved ones, engage in meaningful conversations, and participate in games or other activities. Shifting the focus away from the food can help make the celebration even more memorable.

Holidays are about creating lasting memories, and those come from shared experiences, not just what’s on the plate.

With a little planning and these tips, you can navigate holiday meals with confidence while managing CKD. Prepare ahead, make smart choices, stay hydrated, and remember to focus on the joy of the season beyond the food.

Enjoy the festive season without worry and take care of yourself. If you found these tips helpful, don’t forget to subscribe for more kidney-friendly advice and share your holiday experiences in the comments below.

Happy holidays!

Italian peas

This Italian Peas recipe is a simple, flavorful side dish perfect for anyone following a CKD-friendly diet. Made with heart-healthy olive oil, garlic, and low-sodium vegetable broth, it provides a nutritious, low-sodium alternative to traditional vegetable sides. The combination of green peas and aromatic seasonings makes it a delicious and kidney-friendly choice for anyone looking to manage their renal health while enjoying a tasty meal. It's just 5 ingredients for a delicious and wholesome way to cook peas from frozen.

As a registered dietitian specializing in chronic kidney disease (CKD), I understand the importance of creating kidney-friendly recipes that support overall health and well-being. My goal is to provide reliable, evidence-based information that helps individuals with CKD make informed dietary choices. With years of experience in renal nutrition, I ensure that every recipe is crafted with a focus on managing sodium, potassium, and other essential nutrients for kidney health.

This Green Peas recipe is ideal for those following a CKD-friendly diet because it is low in sodium and potassium, making it gentle on the kidneys. The use of heart-healthy olive oil and low-sodium vegetable broth ensures it meets dietary guidelines for managing fluid balance and blood pressure, essential for individuals with chronic kidney disease. This nutrient-rich dish provides a flavorful, kidney-friendly side that supports overall health without compromising taste.

I love this kidney friendly side dish with a nice kidney friendly beef entree, or even a pork loin medallion with pan gravy. You can enjoy a holiday meal for Chronic Kidney Disease and have this as a side dish with your pork ribeye loin roast.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]Ingredients for a Peas Side Dish

This Italian Peas recipe features a blend of simple, kidney-friendly ingredients, including olive oil, garlic, and frozen green peas. These ingredients come together to create a flavorful and nutritious side dish that's easy to prepare and perfect for any meal.

Olive oil: A heart-healthy fat that adds richness and helps sauté the vegetables, providing flavor and moisture without added sodium.White onion: A flavorful vegetable that adds a subtle sweetness and depth to the dish when sautéed, enhancing the overall taste.Garlic: Known for its aromatic and savory flavor, garlic adds a burst of taste and is often used to boost the dish’s umami profile.Frozen green peas: A nutritious and fiber-rich vegetable that offers a mild, slightly sweet flavor, making it a perfect base for this simple, healthy side dish.Low-sodium vegetable broth: A flavorful liquid used to add moisture and depth to the peas without contributing excess sodium, making it kidney-friendly.Black pepper: A common seasoning that provides a subtle heat and enhances the overall flavor of the dish without overpowering it.

See recipe card for quantities.

Best Way To Cook Frozen Peas

Now that you have your ingredients ready, including your cooking peas from frozen, let’s walk through the simple steps to bring this delicious Italian Peas dish to life. Follow these easy instructions to create a flavorful, kidney-friendly side that’s perfect for any meal.

Step 1 of Italian Peas

1. Add the oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and saute until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add the garlic and cook another 30 seconds.Add peas, vegetable broth, and black pepper. Cover for 2-3 minutes until the peas are tender and heated through.

Hint: Avoid Overcooking the Peas: Be sure to only cook the peas for 2-3 minutes to maintain their bright color and texture, ensuring they don’t become mushy.

Substitutions

If you need to adjust the recipe based on dietary preferences or available ingredients, here are a few kidney-friendly substitutions:

Garlic Alternative: If garlic is not suitable for your diet, try using herb-infused olive oil for a gentler, kidney-friendly flavor.Olive Oil Substitution: Use avocado oil if you prefer a higher smoke point while still maintaining a heart-healthy fat.Vegetable Broth Substitution: Swap low-sodium vegetable broth with homemade vegetable stock to further control sodium levels.Bowl of Italian PeasVariations

This Italian Peas recipe can be easily adapted to suit different preferences or dietary needs, all while staying kidney-friendly. Here are a few variations to try:

Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a few diced jalapeños for a mild heat that enhances the dish’s overall flavor.Add Carrots: Incorporate finely diced carrots for added color and a mild, sweet flavor that complements the peas.Sauté with Mushrooms: Add sliced mushrooms to the skillet to introduce an earthy flavor that pairs wonderfully with the peas.Storage

To keep your Italian Peas fresh and maintain their CKD-friendly qualities, follow these storage tips:

Individual Portions: For convenience, consider storing the peas in individual portions, which makes reheating easy and helps maintain proper portion control for CKD-friendly meals.Refrigeration: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of water or low-sodium broth to prevent drying out.Freezing: While peas can be frozen, it’s best to freeze them separately before mixing with the other ingredients for the best texture. Place the cooled peas in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months, then thaw in the refrigerator and reheat as needed.Top Tip

Cook on Medium Heat: To prevent burning the garlic, cook it on medium heat, ensuring it’s fragrant without turning bitter.
