Remember the Midnight Society???

Hi, all! I’m so psyched to announce that Troy H. Gardner and I are writing recaps of every episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the much-beloved nineties horror show, for the very cool queer horror blog, Gayly Dreadful. And I when I say cool, I really mean it. Just check out Terry’s recent post about Tragedy Girls for proof.

The first three recaps are already available. Take a seat on the orange couch in your soul and let us know what you think.

Erin & Troy vs. The Midnight Society — AYAOTD Recap, The Tale of the Twisted Claw

RECAP

After Gary complains that the night’s almost over and the Midnight Society still hasn’t heard a complete story, David steps up to the plate.

On Mischief Night, friends Kevin and Dougie prank Miss Clove, the neighborhood “witch.” Like the silly boys that they are, they return to her house the next night to trick-or-treat. Instead of candy, Miss Clove gives them a twisted vulture claw and explains that the claw will grant them each three wishes. Dougie’s so shaken up by the experience tha...

Erin & Troy vs. The Midnight Society — AYAOTD Recap, The Tale of the Lonely Ghost

RECAP

David literally bumps into Kristin on the way to the Midnight Society meeting, then gives her a gift in a way that is super awkward but also pretty sweet. He then tells a story about a love so strong it can survive anything. Even…death!!!

Amanda’s parents ditch her at her flighty aunt’s house for the summer, and she’s forced to share a room with her terrible snot of a cousin, Beth, who happens to have a rather unsettling nanny. Beth tells Amanda that if she wants to hang with her and he...

Erin & Troy vs. The Midnight Society – AYAOTD Recap, The Tale of Laughing in the Dark

RECAP

Kristen’s petrified of clowns, so Betty Ann delights in telling a super creepy clown story, much to Eric and Kiki’s pleasure.

Weegie, his sister Kathy, and his obnoxious best friend, Josh, check out a carnival and chat with a creepy carnie about a spook house known as Laughing in the Dark. They research the attraction and learn that Zeebo the Clown robbed a bank and died inside the spook house decades ago. Josh shows off by returning to the park and stealing the dummy clown’s red nose....

Erin & Troy vs. The Midnight Society — AYAOTD Recap, The Tale of the Phantom Cab

Oh, heyyyyyyy, book fans. I know you love books and I promise I’m still writing them. But sometimes I just need to get smart and silly with my BFF, the illustrious Troy H. Gardner. What have the two of us been up to lately? Rewatching one of our fave shows from the 90s and recapping and reviewing each episode with snarky, 21st Century panache, of course! Please tune in each week as we bring you our thoughts on a classic episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? And if you want to rewatch along w...

#YAMyLife, Episode Three — That Time I Stole My Bestie’s Boyfriend

Well, I was pretty much ready to give up on #YAMyLife since it hasn’t gotten much traction, and because lately I’ve felt like I should prioritize noveling and newslettering over blogging. But then Danielle from the fantastic YA Cafe podcast had to go and tell me how cool she thinks #YAMyLife is and that it would make a great class writing exercise (she’s an 8th and 9th grade English teacher, by the by). If any adventurous teachers actually decide to do this, I’ll happily post student essays o...

THE ART OF ESCAPING has arrived…

Well, it’s finally happened. My little YA Contemporary novel about a teenage girl who leads a double life as an escape artist, and the teenage boy she trades secrets with, is finally out in the world. Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who helped make that happen.

I’m posting today to remind you to GO BUY THE BOOK if you like stories about snarky Grifflepuffs who just want to make it out of high school without getting their souls crushed. And if you bought the book (or got a free copy...

A Quick Update (before I duck back into revision hell)

I was going to do a new #YAMyLife post this week, but I’m currently drowning in a quagmire of revisions on a project that will go unnamed for now. Yes, this makes it sound much more dramatic than it actually is but, hell, this is the interwebs. The truth is that sometimes you write a book a certain way and then realize later that that way isn’t going to work, but the core story is worth saving. Such is writer-life.

But it’s not all doom and gloom over here. My debut novel, THE ART OF ESCAPING...

Why I will never say “kids these days” again unless it’s to point out how awesome they are…

I just submitted a post to the Kid Lit for Kids’ Lives project, which is collecting letters from authors, teachers, and librarians in support of the students speaking up and organizing in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Here it is below:

Dear Students of Parkland and Beyond,

You are amazing. I’m not just saying that to placate you or because it’s the thing I should be saying. I’m saying it because I feel it in my blood and guts. Want to know why? Let me tell you a stor...
