Clear and brilliant

Wasn’t it a great fall day yesterday here in Connecticut?

My husband and I walked with friends at the White Memorial Sanctuary in Litchfield on pathways covered in leaves and pine straw. We were surrounded by clear colors and so many tall, old trees. At one point a family of robins followed us, sailing along from tree to bush to tree. (It does seem there were robins in great numbers all over my yard this summer as well!)

Later, after a late lunch with a five-star view from the patio of the Hopkins Inn Restaurant, I walked down in front of the Inn, to take some photos of the stunning Lake Waramaug vista before us. While I shot the photos, I did notice this young couple sitting on a nearby bench, wrapped in mutual attention.

As I was about to head back to the restaurant, the young man approached me and asked if I would take a few photos of them against the beautiful vista. “Of course, I’d be happy to do that for you,” I said. I took two photos and extended my arm to return his camera. He paused, then asked if I would take another photo. His smile was broad now, and his eyes and face were so full, so lit with emotion. He returned to his beloved for the pose.

As I framed the two of them again in the camera’s preview window, I saw him suddenly turn and take one step back and kneel on one knee. Oh my goodness, I thought. I started clicking --- and kept clicking as he spoke whatever wonderful words to her, and then extended a small box. I clicked and clicked. She began to react, her limbs moving in all different directions, then she kissed him and hugged him, they embraced and I clicked more pictures, one after the other. I think I clicked enough shots that they could turn it into a movie with the right software!

When they returned to fetch the camera, I said that there just had to be at least one great photo in there! Arm in arm, with giant eyes and electric smiles and voices they thanked me. I returned to the restaurant patio to my husband and friends and learned that many on the patio had been watching the event unfold. I understand that one table of women from Forest Hills even cheered right after the event concluded. I hadn’t heard them cheer. I was sealed in that intense moment like the couple. Afterwards, I talked with the four women from Forest Hills. There was ease in the chat, like we were old friends. I wonder if the other diners on the patio went home feeling as great as we did --- tables of strangers who had shared in the glow of love and leaves on this glorious afternoon.
