FINALE at Mohegan Sun - 2013 Connecticut Authors Trail
The link to my author site has some photos from the 2013 FINALE event of the 2013 Connecticut Author's Trail. The "trail" begins in July each year and runs thru mid-September. In 2013, 20 or so eastern Connecticut Libraries hosted authors who have a connection to Connecticut.
One of the great benefits of participating was meeting readers and also other authors who have written what sound like fascinating books. I shot the photos quickly at the end so didn't capture all the authors present, but the little blurbs give a glimpse of the talent represented.

Ancestral trip to Lithuania - June 2013
In June, I visited the homeland of my grandmother, Marianna. For those who have read my book, UNTIL THE ROBIN WALKS ON SNOW, a work of historical fiction based on an event in my family's history, you may recall that Marianna is the mother of the 1.5 pound newborn in the story.
Today, I wrote a blog piece about the sense of "home" that wafted through my visit to Lithuania, like a feather tickling my heart now and then. If you have the opportunity to read the blog piece, let me know what you think.

In the season of light...
An ugly act stopped life today in a beautiful Connecticut town.
When I turned on the television during lunch, a breaking news story was on many channels. At first, the reports were about a single shooting incident, a person shot in the foot at a school in a nearby town. I could picture a teacher taking a weapon from a young child who might not have understood the danger.
Within minutes, a far more disturbing picture was emerging. Part of me wanted to shut off the TV, but I couldn't. I clicked back and forth, back and forth, across the channels and their conflicting information. When the extent of the devastation was finally being reported by all, I felt sick to my stomach. Tiny little children and their teachers. So many families affected---so much loss.
Then, I felt angry. The story seemed a ditto of too many others from recent years. The same question screams. Why can't we recognize the patterns soon enough, of those who are crossing over to the dark side? And if we could recognize the patterns, would most people take constructive action?
I had to go outside ---do something physical. Back and forth, I carried and spread the leaf mulch over my bare gardens. No wind. No sound. I tried to concentrate on my task. When I looked up, streaks of color were painting the western sky. So blazing a display it became that I'd like to think the universe was saluting those 27 people that were taken today. I pray they are in a better place.

Congrats to the Winners and Giveaway Part 2...FREE eBook Nov 16 and 17, 2012 AMAZON KINDLE
Congrats to the two winners of my Goodreads Giveaway for UNTIL THE ROBIN WALKS ON SNOW! I have just ordered your paperbacks and hope you enjoy the story.
Since many added it to their "to read" shelf and I know the book is not in many libraries yet, I have scheduled a FREE download of the eBook from the Kindle/Amazon store NOV 16-17, 2012.
Producing a first book is an amazing experience, as was watching the registration climb up and up on my Nov 6 Goodreads giveaway! I was overwhelmed with joy and appreciation -- especially after a grueling year of preparing this book for publication and wondering, of course, whether it would appeal.
If you get a chance to read my book, I'd love to hear what you think. Also, please check out the list of my upcoming appearances. If you live in the CT/RI area, drop by and say hello.

Riding out storm "Sandy"
A week ago we basked in the warmth of autumn gold. Tonight, storm "Sandy" stretches 900 miles, a spiral of lethal symmetry twirling her way north.
Having lived in the northeast U.S. my entire life, I know what people do to prepare for the fury of hurricanes like Sandy. I've often wondered, though, how soon animals, birds, and trees know that devastation is nearing their world. My cats have been on edge and bunkered, one in the linen closet, and one in parts of the house unknown, since this morning. It must be the pressure change, and this storm is a low pressure standout.
The families of robins and catbirds that nest in our bushes and trees, and bring us joyful baby bird dramas in June, have been absent a few weeks already. Hopefully, their route south will not betray them, and they will return to raise their families again here next year. The cardinals and migrating kinglets were noisily flitting around while I raked pine straw today. I pray that they have tucked themselves into a safe thicket and do not perish in this "perfect storm."
