Comparison of Trade Publishing – Vanity – Author Publishing

.

Comparison

.

Every writer, no matter if they author-publish (self-publish) or if they have sold their manuscript to a publisher, have to do their own marketing. But how can you promote your book, if you are on the mercy of a publisher – trade or vanity?  What if you don’t own the ISBN and if you have no access to the retailers’ publishing / author pages, such as Amazon, B&N or Apple?  We had clients who’s publishers where not able to properly set up the Amazon page, did not choose the proper category, took weeks to make changes to a wrong price and months to add the images and text the author had provided for their Goodreads or Amazon page.

.

This is a huge problem (among many others) that authors face after they have given away their work for a pittance – or worse, have paid thousands of dollars to a vanity publisher. So, what’s the difference between both, beside the fact that they make it difficult for their authors to market their books?

.

TRADITIONAL PUBLISHERS

Author needs to have a platform
Trade publishers accept very few submissions (average: 4%)
Authors might have to pitch dozens or hundreds of puplishers / agents
Authors receive a small advance and even smaller royalties
They do not use POD (single or few books), rather print large quantities
Authors have barely any say to cover image, publishing date etc.
Authors cannot decide the sales price, e-book prices are often un-competitive
It takes very long until the book is published (12-18 months average)
Publisher pays for printing, editing services and cover image
Distribution services are covered by the publisher
Professional marketing services available – but only for celebrity writers
They own the ISBN for the book

.

VANITY PUBLISHERS

Author needs to have a platform
Accepts almost ALL submissions
Author never receives any advance in this “partnership
Author contracts are often worse than those of trade publishers
Author pays for printing or ebook-formatting, editing services, cover image
Authors have barely any say to cover image, publishing date etc.
Authors cannot decide the sales price
Mostly Quick turnaround and Print on Demand (POD)
Barely any distribution services, compared to commercial publishers
Vanity publishers don’t live from book sales, they live from printing/author services
No professional marketing services
Very few royalties – if any at all
They own the ISBN for the book
Your book has only 3 months time in bookstores to sell – before being discarded!
Bookstores generally are wary of vanity books (except maybe local writers)

.

AUTHOR-PUBLISHING

Authors needs to have a platform in order to build a brand
Needs to learn about the publishing / book distribution industry
Needs to plan the publishing / marketing process
Authors have to find / compare author services (POD, distribution, formatter, designer)
Authors pays for printing or ebook-formatting, editing services, cover image
Authors can decide everything: cover image, publishing date, retail price etc.
Authors can do their own or hire marketing services
Authors get up to 70% from the books retail price (or 100% if sold from own website)
Authors own their ISBN – which is FREE in Canada! and low-cost in other countrie
Bookstores generally are wary of author-published books (except maybe local writers)

.

Conclusion:

If an author has all these challenges, waiting times (or costs to cover, in the worst scenario) – and cannot even do the necessary marketing without huge problems, what is the point in having or even paying a publisher?  Why not author-publish / self-publish in the first place, and be totally independent when it comes to your marketing?

Whatever you will decide, take your time, don’t rush in anything and don’t let you sell any services, before you have thoroughly evaluated them. It does not matter if your book launches a month or a year later – important is that you have a platform as a writer and that you find a way of publishing that suits you and that gives you the freedom of your own decisions. If you decide to go with a publisher, don’t forget: Real publishers sell to readers – vanity publishers sell to writers!

How to Get More Readers to Your Blog

.

Writing-Blog-Articles

Writing Blog Articles

.

Subtitle: How to get more exposure for your articles, blogs, books …  as these tips are universal for all your writing.  Lots of visitors / readers are crucial for your success in building a following. Writing an article is just the beginning of content marketing.  If you want to reach a wide audience you have to place your work in front of many readers.

.

There are several steps in promoting your writing, no matter if you are a freelance writer for magazines and newspapers or a blogger who writes for an audience of potential readers:

Set up plug-ins to your website or blog in order to have your articles automatically pinged to Social Media sites, as soon as you hit the “publish button”.
Join as many blog directories and sharing sites as possible (see link addresses)
Set up at least two Google+ sites and join Google+ communities in your field
Claim your authorship on Google’s Search Engine
Offer your article to newspapers and magazines, starting with local papers
Split your article in sentences, add the link to your site and post it on Social Media sites
Convert your article in a short slide show and post it for free
Write guest blogs and/or comment on other blogs
Consider to re-write your article and post it on high-traffic e-zines

.

Best of the Web Blogs

There are many paths to building links, such as link baiting or blog roll-link swapping, but few are as easy to implement and cost effective as submitting to blog directories, just to name a few:

.

http://blogs.botw.org/Arts/Literature/Publishing/

http://www.bloggeries.com/Writing_Publishing/

http://technorati.com/blogs/directory/entertainment/books/

See all 20 Blog Directories to submit your blog

.

Document sharing sites

Scribd, a social publishing site, where millions of people share original writings and documents. Convert your original article to a PDF file and upload it to Scribd. Unlike article directories Scribd allows you to incorporate links within your content. You can upload anything onto Scribd as a way to grow your audience, just like on your personal blogs. Choose copyright settings, among many other options, making your documents most searchable. Authors are uploading e-books for sale on Scribd, and keep 80% of the profits. What’s intriguing the most about Scribd, though, is the idea of 50 million readers. Your blog certainly isn’t reaching that many people.

.

Video article

Convert your article to video by making a series of slides from your content. Import the slides into Windows Movie Maker then add music. Submit your video article to YouTube and other video sharing websites. Make sure you always include your full website address in the description meta-tag and also include it in the last slide to direct visitors back to your website.

Blogger (Blogspot)

Is a public blogging platform owned by Google and therefore is rapidly indexed by the search engines. Open another blog here and post parts of your articles.  If you already use Gmail you can simply add Blogger to your account. Every time you create new content add it to this blogging platform. Be sure to include links within the content and in your resource box that link back to your main website. This will boost the rankings of the original article you added to your blog or website.

Social Media Sites

On Google+ you can easily post your article, if it is under 500 words. There are for sure more possibilities on social media sites and on most you can add images and certainly link back to your website or blog. Read also this article about Social SEO Strategies for Start-Ups.

.

Google Authorship

Jeff Bullas explains: “What is eye opening is when I research things in the digital industry I am presented with a Google SERP (search engine result page) in which only a handful of results have a Google+ cover photo next to it! If we’re in the digital industry, and blogging extensively, aren’t we all supposed to be using Google+ and claiming authorship?  Read why Google+ authorship is important.

.

As you can see, there is so much you can do to let your articles and blogs go viral on the Internet. It takes a little bit of effort, but the results in a couple of months will be rewarding.

How Do You Plan Your Future as a Writer?

.

Fall-Mt.Tremblant

.

Where will you be as an author in one, three or five years from now? How do you plan your writing career? Do you want to write just for your own pleasure – just as a hobby – or do you want it as a profession and sell your books?  Which route will you go, and why? Questions that some writers really take by surprise…  Even more than the question:  ”What’s the benefit of your novel for your readers?”

.

Let’s Have a Look First at Your Overall Vision:

What hopes do you hold for yourself as a writer in the future? Would you like to:

become a successful writer
write more books full-time
sell your work to a (real) big publisher
author-publish your work and stay independently
learn to become a freelance writer

.

What fears and obstacles do you currently face that you wish to overcome?

don’t know how to pitch publishers
don’t know how to start self-publishing
don’t know how to market your books

Not having a clear idea of writing queries, of starting out as an author-publisher, or the promotion methods for you & your book, you might be tempted to avoid the subject entirely. Don’t!  Start learning about all these subjects, one step at a time.

.

What resources could help you to overcome these obstacles?

attend as many writers conferences / seminars as possible
hire help to teach you all the marketing strategies
read books and blogs about pitching publishers, starting author-publishing and how to write   content in order to market your books
join writers groups to learn from others

Great Ideas are not longer enough. Thomas Nelson, former CEO and current Chairman at one of the largest publishers in the world, met hundreds of hugely talented writers with outstanding books. He says: “Unfortunately, most of them couldn’t get published. Why? They didn’t have a “platform.”

We are often so immersed in our daily lives – and in writing, that we forget to think about the big

picture, about our goals and why these goals matter to us… Do you believe in your own strength

as a writer (and as an author-publisher)?  Cigdem Kobu, a business growth coach, gives dozens of examples, often from people in desperate situations, “who made it”. Read these stories, they are very empowering. Don’t forget: “If you can imagine it – you can do it!”

The Marriage Whisperer

.

The-Marriage-Whisperer

THE MARRIAGE WHISPERER

.

“You will be in awe at how many of these relationship stories will ring true …” said one reviewer of The Marriage Whisperer by registered Family Therapist Patt Pickett, Ph.D. It is designated as the “September Book of the Month” by Mid West Review.  Another reviewer at “The US Review of Books” states: ”Excellent marriage enrichment book for couples! Highly recommended!”  The Marriage Whisperer was also featured in the September 2013 Small Press Book Watch as the “Reader’s Choice”.

.

70 couple stories

This jargon-free, self-help title is written by an experienced Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and inspired by over 10,000 conversations. It delivers 70 couple stories with humor and includes many practical tips and tools for lasting relationship improvement. Popular themes, such as communication, habits, chores, arguments, sex, and intimacy are explored in easy-read tales.

.

Practical Advice for Couples

“Author Patt Pickett, Ph.D., has the training, knowledge and experience to create a book for married couples of all ages. She has worked with couples, listened to their stories, counseled for many years, and put all those years of expertise into The Marriage Whisperer” says a reviewer.

.

Patt-PickettWhy Patt Wrote this Book

Decades of experience in Family Therapy is the background for her book.  Patt Pickett, Ph.D. says: “We value our marriages. Most of us have room for improvement, but even still, not everyone chooses to work and nurture their relationships–proactively before trouble strikes. Times are changing. Now “even” men care about their relationships—a “winking. While twenty years ago, it was nearly always the woman / wife / girlfriend / mother who made that first call, now it seems upward of 60% of those first appointment scheduling calls are made by men.”

Bookstores to Sell Kindle and Amazon Books???

.

My first thought was: A joke!  But no, Amazon offers bookstores to sell Kindle e-Readers and to participate in e-book sales – copying Kobo’s entry into the Indie book store market. Amazon calls it: “The Best of Both Worlds: Now your customers don’t have to choose between e-books and their favorite book store.” Jeremy Greenfield, wrote: “Today, Amazon has offered an olive branch in the form of a business opportunity to indie booksellers.”  Read his story at Forbes.com.

.

Alter-Buecherladen

.

Harsh Words Came from BusinessInsider.com

“Amazon Has A Plan To Get Indie Bookstores To Kill Themselves” – which they explained: “Once a customer is on the Kindle platform, odds are they’re going to buy fewer physical books, thus killing the Indie bookstore. In essence, Amazon is telling these companies to on-board customers to a digital platform that will destroy their business. We suppose 10% of revenue is better than nothing, but this seems like a suicide mission for any bookstore that signs up.”

.

TechCrunch.com writes: “Amazon has not been seen as a fast friend of the brick-and-mortar bookstore business….” and Tim Carmody, writer at Kottke.org mused: “I have often wondered if an independent bookstore could sell their usual selection of paper books but also sell Kindle books to those who wanted them.”  And my own first reaction was: Most bookstores refused to carry author-published books – and now authors come into bookstores through the “back door” thanks to Amazon?

.

Amazon’s Press Release

“Independent Bookstores Can Now Sell Kindles and Earn 10% from Future Kindle Books Sold

Amazon Source makes it easy for independent bookstores and small retailers to earn additional revenue by selling Kindles.

Booksellers can receive 10% of the price of Kindle books purchased from the devices they sell. The first order is worry-free for retailers—Amazon will buy back the inventory for up to six months after the first order, no questions and no penalties.

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nov. 6, 2013– (NASDAQ:AMZN)—Amazon.com today introduced Amazon Source, a new program that enables independent bookstores and other retailers to sell Kindle devices and accessories, and earn money while doing so. In addition to a discount on purchasing Kindles and Kindle accessories for resale, retailers will have the option of receiving 10% of every Kindle book purchased on Kindle devices sold by the bookstore for the first two years after a customer buys a device. Learn more at http://source.amazon.com.”

What are YOUR thoughts on this?

The Soundtrack of Writing

.

Music

.

The Soundtrack of Writing, by author Penny White

Like any good movie, a good book requires the proper background music. Writing with a soundtrack can help boost creativity and productivity.

What type of book are you writing?

.

Murder mystery
Science Fiction
Western
Romance

Each of these categories has appropriate background music. Think of the last Science Fiction or Romance movie you watched. What type of music was in the background? Was it dramatic?  Was it light-hearted? Did it enhance your movie-going experience?  Whether you paid attention to the music or not, some of it probably stayed with you.  For that reason, using background music while writing will make a book stay with a reader.

.

Choose the Music for Your Writing
It stands to reason that Country Music may be best suited for writing a Western novel. But don’t rule out listening to Garth Brooks or Trisha Yearwood for Romance.  Likewise, consider Classical for Science Fiction or a Murder Mystery.
Some of the music of Phillip Glass is well-suited for stories of vampires, ghosts or the darker side of human nature. Many of his instrumentals are short and concise but have a deep sense of foreboding.
.
The Book Chooses the Music
There are times when music fits perfectly with whatever you’re working on.  For instance, for a recently completed Trilogy, all I heard was Pat Benatar.

.

Invincible accompanied my protagonist as she rode her black steed, Galindore, to rescue her daughter
Le Bel Age was background for every sword fight
All Fired Up was instrumental in helping my protagonist face her worst fears

.

The strength and the wherewithal in the Benatar tunes helped to draw out the strength in my characters. My protagonist in the Trilogy lacked self-confidence in the first installment. By the final book, she was very comfortable with herself being the Queen of a Realm.
.
Song Lyric Interference
Afraid that song lyrics may interfere with your writing?  Give Classical compositions a try. Many movies utilize Classical music to set the tone. Those Classical pieces serve just as well when writing. A number of Classical pieces are available for free download at http://www.amazon.com/.  The music of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, et al, are timeless pieces and capable of evoking a myriad of emotions and visualizations.
.
It’s About the Reader, Too
Using music to set the tone for writing doesn’t just benefit the writer. It also serves to enhance the reading experience.  Like music enhances a movie, the music you hear in your head while writing will enhance every aspect of your writing. It will attune you to dialogue, character development, emotions and descriptions. The stronger and more realistic the visualization, the better you will write it.
.
The reader will not be able to hear what you hear. She or he may have an altogether different soundtrack in mind while reading. Or no soundtrack at all.  Regardless of what the reader hears or doesn’t hear, use your favorite tunes to create. The important thing is that you use the music to reach your best writing potential.
.

Any tool a writer can use to enhance her or his writing is invaluable. Create a Playlist that will enhance your writing experience. It is sure to flow over into the reading experience as well.
.

Pen’s Bio

Pen has written and published six novels in the science fiction/fantasy/adventure genre in the past three years, with more to come. She has also published a number of non-fiction titles as well. Pen still lives in the Atlanta area where she is staff to two felines.
Pen suffered a heart attack on June 18th of 2013 upon completion of the Sword of Tilk Trilogy. Surviving this experience has motivated her to plan a 600-mile walk from Atlanta to Washington, DC in 2014 as a celebration of life and to gather background information for a novel in progress.

Has No One Told You This?

.

Riverbank

.

There are lots of possibilities to let everyone know about your book, without even incurring any costs.  Browsing through our more than 900 blog posts, you will find an abundance!  However, most important is, to have a solid amount of friends and followers on Goodreads, Twitter, Google+ and Facebook  - at least 2,000 on every Social Media site, and a long list of opt-in email addresses to send out invitations for your book launch or any other news-worthy events – or for your readers to download single chapters or short stories as a teaser.

.

Check out the genres that are popular and announce your books on these book reader’s blogs and websites:

http://www.Wattpad.com

http://www.ebooksjustpublished.com/about

http://jcphelps.blogspot.com/p/submit-content.html

http://www.manicreaders.com/index.cfm?disp=authors

http://www.Goodreads.com

http://books.google.com/googlebooks/tour/

Google writes:  “Once you send Google your titles (or upload them as PDF files), we’ll add them to our index for free. By matching the content in your books with user searches, Google Books connects your books with the users who are most interested in buying them. Each Google Books result will display the book’s title and author, a short excerpt containing the highlighted search terms, and other public data about the book.”

.

Get as Many Book Reviews as Possible:

Finding reviewers is so much easier if you are well-established in Goodreads communities and other writer / book forums. Start a book giveaway on Goodreads at least a month before your book will be printed (create “dummies” with the help of a digital copy/print company or through “espresso book machines”. When giving out these early copies, try to solicit as many reviews as possible. Use the best reviews for blurbs on your final book cover.

If you have an Amazon account, you could visit the Amazon Kindle forum, where Kindle users share their experiences with the Kindle reader, and also talk about books available for the Kindle. Many authors also post about their new books and join the conversations. When you introduce yourself, consider telling folks there about your book.  Be polite and conversational in tone, and be sure to provide direct hyperlinks to your book page.

.

Benefits of Content Marketing

Why asking for (media) reviews, when you could get both: book promotion and at the same time (often) being paid?  I know, it is a new concept to many writers, but when you think about it – it makes really sense: why use your time and effort to chase reviewers, when you can use your energy to leverage your books content and your research content - to create articles that you can pitch to both, print and online newspapers and magazines?  And as an added benefit: You get valuable back-links to your website/blog or book sales page!

Make use of your assets!

The three main assets you have as an author:

your writing skills
the content you already wrote
the research you have done for your book(s)

.

Again: Start Early!

If you’re waiting until the book is finished to start marketing, you’re already behind the curve. As an author, you should devote a portion of every day to get your name out there and to build relationships with prospective readers, partners and friends.  And with relationships I don’t mean advertising your book (tweeting: buy my book, buy my book, buy ….) this is not relationship-building!

.

All books live or die, based on word of mouth!

If you try to build your network after you release your book, you’ll face a more difficult challenge. If you build a large social network BEFORE you release your book, your marketing efforts will be much more successful.

.

Help is on the Way:

If you have a full-time job and / or other commitments and not at least an hour per day left to build your platform and network with potential readers, let us do a good part of your book PR, and at the same time we will coach you over the phone and teach you how book marketing can be done on a very low budget – all for less than two dollars / day.  Read more about this valuable and extensive package we offer to authors.

5 Habits of Smart People

.

#1 Smart people are avid readers.

Or in other words:  For those who want to lead – READ! A study conducted in Stanford University, proves that reading is the workout the brain needs in order to stay in its optimal health.  In a blog article “20 Reasons to Become an Avid Reader” is for example listed:

It boosts imagination and creativity
Enhanced intelligence
Improves empathy
Self-improvement
Better thinking skills

#2 Smart People Have Dedication

Jenna Goudreau wrote in a Forbes article: “One thing successful people know: Dedication and blind persistence are two different things. You can work hard but not smart. When something’s not working, you’ve got to tweak it. Successful people maintain success by consistently learning and adapting to the environment around them.”

.

#3 Smart People Set Goals

There are hundreds of research studies going back decades showing that setting goals can increase people’s performance. How to avoid the four common mistakes in goal setting is well explained in this PSY blog.  Now, who accomplished the most goals: 64% who had written down their goals and 76% of those who shared their goals with friends!

.

#4 Smart People Are Self-Aware

Author Scott Berkun wrote: “There are many methods that can help an interested person in learning more about themselves:

Meditation
Keeping a journal (and reading it periodically)
Trying new experiences that challenge you, such as traveling alone
Asking close friends ‘What am I not aware of about myself?

When we focus our attention on ourselves, we evaluate and compare our current behavior to our internal standards and values. We become self-conscious as objective evaluators of ourselves.

.

#5 Being Self-Disciplined

“It’s easy to think of the highly self-disciplined as being miserable misers or uptight Puritans, but it turns out that exerting self-control can make you happier not only in the long run, but also in the moment” writes Neuroscience journalist Maia Szalavitz in a TIME magazine article

Furthermore: “Through a series of tests — including one that assessed 414 middle-aged participants on self-control and asked them about their life satisfaction both currently and in the past — and another that randomly queried volunteers on their smartphones about their mood and any desires they might be experiencing, the researchers found a strong connection between higher levels of self-control and life-satisfaction.”

.

If you’re looking to improve your success at home, work, school or at your writing you can start by working the positive habits of smart people into your daily routine.

S.O.S. Animals And Other Short Stories

.

Short-Stories-by-Fiza-Pathan

Short Stories by Fiza Pathan

.

How did the animals aboard the Titanic save themselves?

Fiza Pathan gives readers answers to questions, such as: How did a lion save Christians in distress? Can dolphins pray for the dead and can a snake solve a riddle? Do last wishes come true and is there really a Santa Claus? Can animals lie like human beings? Why did barn animals enter a mall? Can Tigers long for peace? Can a giraffe be self-conscious of its looks and is the strayed lamb saved by the shepherd?. All these and other questions are answered in the book “S.O.S. Animals And Other Stories” in a manner never narrated before.

.

“Beautifully written, touching and original.”

Fiza Pathan writes: “‘S.O.S. Animals And Other Stories’ was the first book that I wrote, a book of short stories which can be read by people of all ages, and I am delighted and humbled that the stories were appreciated and reviewed by Margaret Kell Virany, who said: “beautifully written, touching and original.”  And I might add: the ideal bedtime stories to read to your children and talk with them about the stories’ content.

.

Fiza-PathanFiza Pathan is a teacher for History and English to the Senior students. Being literary minded from a young age, she participated in and won many competitions at College in essay writing and short stories. Review ‘S.O.S. Animals And Other Stories’ by Margaret Kell Virany

Review by Br. Joshan Rodrigues

“SOS Animals and other Stories is a beautiful expression of faith through the eyes of a believer, in a manner both different and unique. The language is simple and lucid, yet enticing and appealing at the same time. The book can be used as a veritable resource book for catechesis and for moral development. The stories in this book can also be used as a simple read for daily reflections.”
Br. Joshan Rodrigues- The Examiner Issue, date 03 November 2012.
