When he gets in from work, they watch tv until dark then his mother rises up from her place on the couch, and pads into the kitchen. Something goes into the microwave and then the faucet turns on, and she’s back in time to catch the start of the next program. She settles back down, reaches across the couch arm to his pack of cigarettes. It takes him a moment to realize what it is he’s watching; their shapes moving through large drifts of snow. They come down from the rocks toward the springs, hot rising off the water’s edge. They’re just like us, she says and she smokes very carefully. On the screen the monkey lowers her face into the warm of the water. She blinks a set of deep green eyes. They’re like people, she says. After dinner, he gets up and takes the tv trays into the kitchen. When he returns his mother is asleep on the couch. The shape she makes is grotesque: mouth open, her hand dangling off the edge. He takes the cold cigarette from between her fingers. The tv is still on. If he turns it off, he will wake her. He knows that. instead he stands over her— her skin taking on the blue cast of the LCD, and he watches her. Her eyes move behind her eyelids. She is dreaming, he realizes but of what, he couldn’t begin to fathom. He thinks, for a moment about trying to pick her up, of carrying her back to her room. But he doesn’t. Instead he lets himself outside onto the porch. He steps over the grass. The ground is cool, wet. Out on the street, there are lights on in all the houses. He can even make out the shapes of people behind the blinds. What’re they doing, he wonders. How do they manage.
