Thursday Tasters – September 18, 2014 – Amalfi Affair – Navy SEALs of Valor 1

In this scene, the Switzerland bike tour has begun and Olivia is relishing the views of the Swiss countryside and the sensory experience of some fast cycling… 

As she pedaled toward Gstaad, the tension melted from Olivia’s limbs. She’d never seen pine forests and meadows as lush and green as each hillside she cycled past. Heavy gray clouds suggested the foliage would be getting another good soak before day’s end. The Swiss countryside is so green you can almost taste it.

Olivia whizzed past meadows of colorful wildflowers, inhaling their sweet scent. The Alps, all limestone layers pushed up like an accordion by the earth’s compressive forces and later gouged out by flowing glaciers, hosted many flowers she’d grown up seeing in Ohio where the soil was similar. In meadows of thick grass, rich yellow dandelions and Queen Ann’s lace waved in the gentle breeze. The Swiss chalet style homes—constructed of pine or oak—had dozens of windows framed in green-painted shutters and underlined by flower boxes bursting with red or pink flowers.

She relished the freedom of flying down the hills, hearing the wind whistling in her ears and tickling her bare skin as she accelerated faster and faster. She rose from the seat and tipped the bicycle away from her body’s center of gravity to maintain balance on the steeper curves. I can fly she wanted to shout as her spirits soared.

My snippet comes from my WIP CZECH MATE (Navy Seals of Valor 2). Anticipated release date for this book is December 1, 2014. In this scene Air Force captain Becca is shopping at the Bagram Air Force base exchange and then suddenly taken hostage by an unidentified man. Fortunately, Navy SEAL Nathan happens to be nearby…

The man’s foul smelling breath blew hot in her ear. “I want access to the data center.”

Fuck. Becca felt conflicted over what to do next. She couldn’t lead this miscreant straight to every megabyte of confidential information. She wondered how the man had evaded security. Bagram was usually tight as Fort Knox. She’d never heard of an unauthorized person getting through security during the three years she’d been on the base. She winced as the metal jabbed her ribs again.

“What’s the matter with you? Are you deaf? If you want to live, you’ll move your ass.”

“I’m going.” Becca took a hesitant step forward. All at once, the pistol slid down her rib cage and away from her body and the man groaned, sounding as if he’d been hit. Did someone attack him? She jerked around to see her attacker stumbling, still gripping his weapon. As he swung it toward her head, her view of was suddenly obscured by another man’s chest the instant before it struck her and knocked her to the floor.

She gasped for breath and tried to push herself out from beneath the dark form of the man’s rock solid body. The single shot fired rang in her ears before the gunman’s running footsteps grew more distant on the tile. Her savior’s weight was suffocating her. Every rib felt like it had been bruised. Her moan of discomfort was muffled by the man’s muscular chest.

“Are you all right, Miss?” The man had a crisp accent that sounded distinctly East Coast. She’d never been smashed up against a man so solid, muscular and strong. She felt every contour of his body–the ridges of his chest, his firm shoulders and even his thick muscled thighs. Her fiancé had been tall and lean with a runner’s physique. For some reason, this intimate contact with her rescuer ignited her desire.

She felt almost dizzy on his intoxicating scent. He smells like cinnamon aftershave, toothbrush and sweat. Who would have imagined that combination would be so appealing? She wanted to see more of his hot-as-hell physique, but she could only see his armpit. “Yeah, I’m fine, other than the fact that I can’t breathe.”

Now that you’ve seen how romantic all this looks, let me share a little snippet with you…This scene happens at Fornillo Beach, which is a few minutes walk from the busier Positano beach. Darryl realizes he has fallen for Olivia, but still believes their situation can’t last because of his life as a Navy SEAL.

They stretched out their towels on an isolated patch of beach between two enormous boulders and sat down beside each other. Olivia sifted her hands through the pebbles. “Look, Darryl.” She picked up two small rounded pieces of terracotta tile. Both had blue paint on their surfaces. “How do you suppose these ended up here?”

He reached over and stroked her fingers, studying the tiles she held in her hand. “I’m not sure.”

Her gaze wandered to the pastel buildings that covered the hillsides. “Those cliffs are so steep. Maybe during a heavy rain, fragments of someone’s patio or ceramic pot were washed down the mountain and ended up down here.”

“Maybe you’re right. This place would be a hazard during a flood.” Darryl turned his attention to the pebbles, sifting his hands through them. “Oh, look what I found.” He held up a badly weathered Euro.

Olivia reached over and took it from his hand. “Can I use it to make a wish?”

“Sure.”

She closed her eyes for a moment and rolled the coin between her fingers. Her lips curled up in a playful smile and she shifted her torso back, threw her weight forward and tossed the coin into the ocean. It landed with a splash on the crest of a wave.

Darryl knew what he would have wished for if he’d been the one tossing the coin. The impossible.

After batting their way through the thick leaves, they emerged from the shade of the forest into the brilliant green meadow, constantly nourished by the rushing water.

“This is amazing.” Olivia skipped up beside Darryl like a young girl, weaving her hands through the tall grass and wildflowers. The sunlight illuminated the tips of her chestnut hair.

God, she’s beautiful. Darryl’s heart cantered inside his chest. “I’d rather you went first from now on. Then if you slip, I’ll be able to help.”

She stopped walking and placed her hands on his lower back and gave him a shove. “More like put your naughty hands all over my back side you mean. I’m not that fragile. I can handle this.”

He took a step forward and then craned his neck around to look at her. “You were the one that said you only workout three times a week. I know it’s not true, but if you lie like that, you have to expect that I’m going to think extreme activity might be beyond your limit.”

“I didn’t think you’d find me sexy if I told you how much I exercise. Some guys find athletic women off-putting.” As she stepped up beside him, her foot slipped on the wet grass.

He reached out to steady her before taking another step up the steep, wet slope. “Do I seem like some guys?”

Olivia Simpson had been thrilled to hear Darryl’s voice on the phone. After months apart, she was finally going to reunite with her lost lover. She’d flown to Italy on the first available flight.

After taking the Amalfi Coast ferry to Positano, she checked into a seaside hotel, spent hours primping in the room and rushed to the restaurant where she and Darryl had planned to meet. Olivia had reserved the same outdoor table where they’d dined together so many months ago—the one with the most prominent view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. She crossed her legs, flipped through the wine list and waited. A couple sat down and held hands across the table. Olivia sighed and glanced at her watch. Fifteen minutes late. Don’t worry, she told herself. In a few more minutes, you’ll be in his arms.

After thirty minutes passed, Olivia ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio. She gazed out at the beach and the seemingly endless sea. Families and couples frolicked in the water and the myriad yachts and other anchored boats in the harbor bobbed on the brilliant blue waves.

She glanced at her watch again and sighed. So, he’s an hour late. He probably got tied up in traffic. Olivia poured herself a second glass of wine. More diners sipped wine and limoncellos, lingered over four course meals, and left. Olivia checked the time again. Two hours late. I hope he didn’t get in an accident. She poured the remainder of the wine into her glass.

Another ferry docked, collected passengers and left. The church clock tower chimed eight o’clock. Despair hung heavy in her heart. How could I have been such a fool to fall in love with him? Still, she continued to wait, her hands clasped, hoping.

My snippet comes from my August 18 release AMALFI AFFAIR (Navy Seals of Valor 1). In this scene, Olivia realizes she’s in love with Darryl…and that their time together is about to end.

Olivia’s mind was floating away on a post-sex high as they ran and pranced through the water naked, laughing and talking. The breeze and the splash of chilly water chilled her bare breasts and wet sand squeezed between her toes.  She wondered if he was relishing this experience as much as she was. He certainly seemed to be having the time of his life.

Olivia was tempted to spill the truth about her career. What difference does it make? Their week of passion was almost over. She couldn’t risk ruining their final hours together by changing her story.

In the end, this deception wouldn’t matter much. They’d go back to their solitary lives and occasionally look back on these carefree days. She knew for a fact she’d never forget Darryl. She loved him, but then told herself that she couldn’t. Who falls in love in a week?

I do, her heart whispered. She tried to fight her emotions down with logic. For all she knew, he’d only shown the best side of himself and after another month, she’d be desperate to escape his dark moods and other flaws. It was difficult to imagine him acting differently, though. He wasn’t perfect. Even though he was strong and determined and a true patriot, he suffered bouts of post-traumatic stress disorder and kept his heart tightly locked away. But she was damaged, too—walking through life with protective armor around her heart, afraid to get close to someone. The two of them together made sense. Their deep understanding of each other’s lives had brought them closer and a long-time partnership might help heal their nasty wounds.

Darryl splashed a sheet of water in her direction and she turned and splashed him back. He grabbed her arm and pulled her in toward him. “You’re getting rather out of line. I might just have to dunk you.”

“Better not,” said Olivia, pushing his hand away. But before she could step out of reach, he’d scooped her up and dropped into the cool seawater, holding her in his arms.

A second later he surfaced still holding her. “Hey, no fair,” she sputtered. “I could have swallowed water.”

My post for today is the opening of an outdoor sex scene. Darryl and Olivia are frolicking beneath Murrenbach Falls in Switzerland…

Darryl jerked the jersey over her head in one smooth move and then reached around to unclasp her bra. She had just gripped the waistband of her cycling pants when he scooped her up in his arms. “Before you have a chance to escape, I think I’ll take you into the water.”

Olivia kicked her legs and thrashed in his arms. “No. Put me down. I don’t want to be wet all day.”

“Wet all day could be exciting.”

Olivia’s cheeks were flushed and she sat on the pool step tracing figure eights through the water with a red-painted toe. He felt relaxed and sated after their lusty interlude, but knew that feeling wouldn’t last long with her around. After a single day, he’d become addicted to her, constantly craving her body wrapped around his. Whenever too much time passed, a sudden desperation overcame him without warning and he felt like he had to be inside her, to possess her with every ounce of his being.

My Sexy Saturday – July 26, 2014 – Amalfi Affair

My snippet comes from my upcoming release AMALFI AFFAIR (Navy Seals of Valor 1), to be published mid-to-late August.

But first, here’s the blurb:

On a cycling tour through the Swiss Alps, CIA agent, Olivia Simpson, meets handsome Navy SEAL, Darryl Jennings. Her lust shifts into overdrive for this man on leave from missions he won’t discuss. A one night stands leads to a blissful week traveling the Amalfi Coast. Because of their secretive careers, their love affair is destined to end. Olivia immerses herself into her Intelligence work with memories of Darryl never far from the surface. When she receives a surprise phone call from him nine months later, she dashes off to meet him in Italy. Too late, she realizes the call had been made by an imposter to lure her into a trap.

Despite Darryl’s decision to end his relationship with Olivia, he returns to his missions in Afghanistan unable to shake her from his heart. Regret for letting her go gnaws at him until he decides to search for her. After following numerous dead end leads, he gives up on ever finding the elusive woman who stole his heart nine months prior. When he’s called in for a mission to rescue a high-level intelligence officer who’s been kidnapped, he realizes the woman in question is his Olivia. Pressure mounts as he becomes embroiled in a mission where the fate of his country and his true love falls on his shoulders.

Here’s Darryl and Olivia’s first meeting…

A deep masculine voice broke into her reverie. “May I buy you a drink? I saw you at the pool earlier. Not only are you beautiful, but you look like you’d be fun to talk to.”

She bit back a smile as she realized why Peter and Colin had disappeared. Those two are just too much. Olivia turned to see the drool-worthy man standing so close she could reach out and touch him. Wavy reddish-brown hair framed a chiseled face. Sexy dimples accented his full lips. A white scar marred the tanned skin above one of his thick eyebrows. His yellow-flecked emerald eyes were nothing short of mesmerizing. He wore a worn Stanford University T-shirt and faded jeans that hugged muscular thighs and an obviously more-than-adequate package. I can’t believe you just thought that. Her voice caught in her throat and for a moment she forgot to breathe.

Despite the fact that his attire contradicted the five star hotel dress code; every item he’d chosen to wear suited him perfectly. A suit or a tie would have ruined his signature look, which was breathtakingly masculine.

She realized she’d gawked too long when he crossed his muscular arms over his chest.

“Oh, yes, of course, have a seat.” Olivia waved a trembling hand in his direction.

“Thank you.” He extended his hand toward her, initiating a handshake. “I’m Darryl Jennings.”

Remaining seated so she wouldn’t look too eager, she fidgeted and reached for his hand. “Olivia Simpson.” She hoped he didn’t detect the nervous tremor in her voice. His fingers laced firmly through hers and he seemed in no hurry to let go. Warm tingles raced up her arm. The sudden attraction astounded her, but then she brushed it off as inevitable. Any woman would go wild for him. The man was so hot; he could melt chocolate. Hell, her hand felt like it was about to melt and drip onto the floor.
