2015 – A Year For Magic – January 1, 2015

When a year ends, I often reflect on happy times I spent with family and friends, remember with much love those who are no longer here, and ponder ways to improve myself personally and professionally in the upcoming year.  I am looking to the New Year with much anticipation and excitement. I plan to publish two more books in the Navy SEALs of Valor series for my beloved readers and spend more quality time with the people I love most.

To kick off the New Year, several authors (Hunter Jones Teresa Noelle Roberts Sherri Hayes Gale Stanley Jacintha Topaz Jade Onyx  Christina Mandara Elodie Parkes Amber Lea Easton Dakota Skye Glenda Horsfall) and myself are posting some “A Year for Magic” excerpts. The excerpt I’m sharing with you today comes from my November 18, 2014 release, CZECH MATE – Navy SEALs of Valor 2. I always enjoy reading how lovers meet, so I’ll share the scene where Air Force Captain Baylee Stiles meets Navy SEAL Nathan Brooks. So sit back and enjoy the romance, hot sex and happily ever afters that all of us have for you today.

Excerpt:

In this excerpt, Baylee Stiles has been captured by an armed gunman at Bagram Air Force base…

“What’s the matter with you? Are you deaf? If you want to live, you’ll move your ass.”

“I’m going.” Baylee took a hesitant step forward. All at once, a wall of muscle darted in front of her, obscuring her view of her attacker’s dark, menacing eyes. The butt of the pistol slid away from her rib cage and her assailant groaned. Her first thought was how large and strong her rescuer appeared and then her second was how rock solid his body felt as it struck her and knocked her to the ground.

She gasped for breath and tried to push herself out from beneath the suffocating weight of her rescuer’s muscular body. A single shot rang in her ears before the gunman’s running footsteps grew more distant on the tile. ”Ugg,” she groaned, the sound of her voice muffled by the man’s body. Every rib felt bruised and battered.

“Are you all right, Miss?” The man had a crisp accent that sounded distinctly East Coast. As her terror subsided, she became acutely aware of her rescuer’s proximity She felt every contour of his body—the ridges of his chest, his firm shoulders and even his thick muscled thighs.

As she gasped for breath, his scent tinged her nostrils. Cinnamon aftershave. Mint toothpaste. Sweat. “Yeah, I’m fine, other than the fact that I can’t breathe.”

“Sorry for knocking you down, but I didn’t have many options available.” The man pushed up on his hands before rolling away from her, sitting on the floor beside her and studying her as if trying to assess the damage.

She raised her head and stared at the handsome man, hoping her gaze wasn’t too wide-eyed. Talk about shock and awe. The Trident on his duty uniform provided all the evidence she needed to know that her rescuer was a Navy SEAL. He had lively steel blue eyes, coal black hair and his broad jaw line was dusted with a dark five o’clock shadow. She cleared her throat and blinked away her view of his mesmerizing eyes. A wave of dizziness assaulted her. She blinked a few times but the gorgeous man was still there. “I may have a bruise or two, but I’m okay. Did that man get away?”

The man’s thick dark brows tipped inward and his gaze drifted toward the door. “Yes, he fired off a round and ran. I would have pursued him, but I wanted to make sure you were okay first.”

Baylee pushed up on her hands and knees and looked up at the stunning man, who had risen to his feet and towered over her prostrate form. The top button on his uniform had come undone, revealing wisps of dark chest hair. Everything about the man’s features from his immense muscular frame to his dark hair, thick brows and blocky facial features screamed strong, masculine and sexy. She cleared her throat and willed herself to concentrate.

She ached to have Nathan peel off her uniform and make love to her under the starry sky. That’s crazy. Why not, the carefree side of herself argued. For three years, she’d done nothing but hide from feeling anything. The sexiest man alive wanted her and allowing her desire to carry her away felt right.

Even in the dim light, Baylee saw the glitter of desire in Nathan’s eyes. She knew from that look and his raspy breathing that he wanted her. And she wanted him. That’s why she allowed him to tip her onto her back on the bench, to spread apart her thighs with one knee. After he removed his arm brace and cast it aside, his hands unbuttoned her uniform, baring her skin and his hands slid inside to explore her breasts. The bra fastened in front and with a quick flick of his hand, he unsnapped it and her breasts fell free.

“Is this okay?” Nathan asked. One hand gently smoothed over her breast, sending excited heat scattering through her body.

Baylee’s head tipped back in a groan of pleasure. “Oh, yes, Nathan, it feels great. Please don’t stop.”

“You’re so beautiful Baylee and you really turn me on. If we keep on going, I don’t think I’ll be able stop.” His voice was raspy with lust.

Every nerve ending in her body was on fire for more of his touch. “This feels right, Nathan. Don’t worry. Just be with me.”

Nathan’s fingertips stroked her nipples, sending more warm heat scattering between her legs.

My Sexy Saturday – November 29, 2014 – Czech Mate – Navy SEALs of Valor 2

For this week’s Sexy Saturday post, we are challenged to share an excerpt with historical context. To read some more My Sexy Saturday posts, click here. Although my November 18, 2014 release, Czech Mate, Navy SEALs of Valor 2, is a contemporary romance, it takes place in Prague, a city with a rich and complex history. I spent three weeks in this magnificent city in 2007 while taking a writing workshop through Western Michigan’s Prague Summer Program.

Darryl and Olivia often reflect on Prague’s history, including in this scene where they have just made love in the enormous stretch of beautiful trees, meadows, historic buildings, streams and lakes that comprise Stramovka Park. Olivia shifted off of Darryl carefully, resting her head on his chest and intertwining her legs with his.

They mated with their bodies, but their minds were interconnected as well. Olivia knew how to respond to Darryl and he knew how to respond to her. No topic was off limits when they talked—they’d come to know each other inside and out. This connection of their minds made sex all that much more uninhibited.  The knowledge of how to please each other was already there. There were no awkward moments, no fumbling or learning this or that didn’t work. Their bodies and minds were so attuned to each other’s needs, every meeting of their bodies became more satisfying.

As the wind rustled the leaves of the maple tree branches that shaded them, speckles of sunlight flickered over their bodies. Olivia relished the soft dance of warm sunlight and the tickle of the gentle breeze on her bare back. She raised her head to look at Darryl. “I wonder if other couples made love in this park, not just recently, but hundreds of years ago.”

Darryl brushed a stray strand of hair away from her face. “I was thinking about that, too. The past seems to follow you in Prague. Everywhere we go, I find myself looking back, wondering what the streets looked like, what clothing people wore, and even about the slang they used years ago.”

“Women wore corsets and dresses with so many layers they looked like wedding cakes—they must have been a bitch to remove in the heat of passion. I can imagine couples in love strolling through this park holding hands and stealing passionate kisses, but I bet no one made love here until more recently. “

“If you were wearing a wedding cake dress, I’d find a way to get you out of it,” Darryl teased.

“Now that I can believe.”

Baylee pushed up on her hands and knees and looked up at the stunning man, who had risen to his feet and towered over her prostrate form. The top button on his uniform had come undone, revealing wisps of dark chest hair. Everything about the man’s features from his immense muscular frame to his dark hair, thick brows and blocky facial features screamed strong, masculine and sexy. She cleared her throat and willed herself to concentrate. “He threatened to kill me if I didn’t give him access to the mission control center.”

“Yes, I heard the whole interchange.” The man extended a large, sturdy hand in her direction. “Here, let me help you up.”

“Thanks.” Taking a lunging step forward, she reached for the man’s large, strong hand. Electric heat spiraled through her body as he pulled her to her feet. She was reluctant to release his firm, comforting grip. Once she did, she jammed her hands into her uniform pockets, hoping he wouldn’t sense her nervousness. She’d nearly forgotten what attraction felt like… after three lonely, painful years. Suddenly she felt like a giddy high school girl. “We need a plan.”

“I’ll call security. If he’s headed for mission control, they can intercept him there. I’m Nathan Brooks by the way.” Nathan reached for her hand a second time.

She jerked her right hand out of her pocket, vowing not to be wowed by the attraction she knew she’d feel once their hands connected again. Her facade was supposed to be tough and in control, not silly and frivolous and tending to melt into mush. Her hand trembled in anticipation of his touch. “Baylee Stiles.” When the handshake ended, she frowned and perched her hands on her hips.

”I better get to this call.” After dialing a number on his smart phone touch screen Nathan held the phone up to his ear and turned his back to her. His uniform clung to his tight buttocks and showcased his broad back.

She licked her lips, distracted by the view. She struggled to tame her mind so she could focus on what Nathan was saying. When he mentioned pursuing the gunman once he got the Air Force Captain to a safe location, her chest tightened. Dust swirled up from the parched ground as she leaped in front of him, interrupting his conversation. “What did you just say?”

My snippet comes from my WIP CZECH MATE (Navy Seals of Valor 2). Anticipated release date for this book is November 25, 2014. In this scene, Air Force captain Baylee Stiles has avoided Navy SEAL Nathan Brooks ever since he asked her a question that brought back her painful past. Baylee battles with her past and her fears, which are standing in the way of a second chance at love and happiness.

After an eight-mile run and a weight workout, Baylee still felt like she wanted to punch the first person she saw. Why can’t I get a handle on my emotions? They lapped around her like an encroaching sea, threatening to drown her.

Ever since her recent conversation with Nathan, she kept flashing back to the day of Tyler’s death. If she didn’t put a lid on her feelings fast, she’d be back to not being able to drag herself out of bed and bursting into tears randomly during the day.

No, I won’t let that happen. She knew the best way to keep her feelings at bay was to remain detached from everything. She couldn’t allow herself to care about Nathan or anyone else.  Caring about people was dangerous. Pursuing work that involved compassion and kindness was dangerous. She needed to bury every sliver of love and compassion and keep anger and aggression in the forefront of her mind.

She hadn’t become whom she’d aspired to be, but that was okay. She had become the person it was safe to be. The person she had wanted to be was weak and inclined to cry or hug a stranger in need or to share an inspiring story in hopes of helping someone else. What a bunch of crap.

Baylee strode toward the punching bag that hung from the workout room ceiling. Gloveless, she attacked it, imagining the bag was the weak person she wanted to drop to the floor.

She slugged the bag with a right hook, grunting and then jabbed with her right hand. Feeling completely crazed, she pummeled the bag over and over again, grinding her teeth together and fighting tears that threatened to burst free and flow like wild rivers. No, I’m not going to cry, she told herself. And then she unleashed another round of fury against the bag.

An hour later, she emerged from the gym with bleeding knuckles. Her body sagged with total exhaustion and her mind felt deadened and emptied of feelings. It’s better that way, she thought, as she walked back to her bunkhouse alone.

In this scene, which immediately follows last week’s Sexy Saturday post, Air Force captain Baylee Stiles was taken hostage at the Bagram Air Force Base Exchange and then rescued by Navy SEAL Nathan Brooks…

“Sorry for crushing you, but I didn’t have many options available at the time.” The man pushed up on his hands before rolling away from her, sitting on the floor beside her. He gazed intently at her. “I hope I didn’t hurt you.”

She raised her head and stared at the handsome man, hoping her gaze wasn’t too wide-eyed. Talk about shock and awe. The man was stunning. He had lively blue eyes, thick dark brows and his broad jaw line was dusted with a dark five o’clock shadow. His hair was as black as coal. She cleared her throat and blinked away her view of his mesmerizing eyes. That’s a Caribbean Sea you could drown in. A wave of dizziness assaulted her. She blinked a few times but the gorgeous man was still there. “I may have a bruise or two, but I’m okay. Did that man get away?”

The man’s thick brows tipped inward and his gaze drifted toward the door. “Yes, he fired off a round and ran. He needs to be stopped.”

Baylee pushed herself up on her hands and knees and looked up at the stunning man, who had risen to his feet and towered over her prostrate form. “He threatened to kill me if I didn’t give him access to the mission control center.”

“Yes, I heard the whole interchange.” The man reached for her hand. “Here, let me help you up.”

“Thanks.” She reached for the man’s strong, lithe hand. Electric heat spiraled through her at his touch, making her forget her tender ribs. His sturdy grip felt comforting. She was reluctant to release him. Once she did, she jammed her hands into her uniform pockets, hoping he wouldn’t sense her nervousness. She’d almost forgotten what it felt like to be attracted to someone… ever since that awful race. “I guess we better come up with a plan.”

“I’ll call security. If he’s headed for the mission control center, they should be able to intercept him there. In the meantime, let’s try to chase him down. I’m Nathan by the way.” Nathan reached for her hand for a second time.
