A Prologue for "To Nowhere"

Just wanted to share a short story I wrote even before I published "To Nowhere". Nothing too excited, just a prologue for the story from Brindt's POV. Hoping to kinda share why he is the way he is in the book. Haha, please enjoy. You can check out the link here:

Or you can read the story below:

Prologue of "To Nowhere"

Insignificants. I always found it fascinating that there was a race so similar to mine, but so much smaller. I was pretty young when I found out that my mom was a Gatherer of such beings, so this piqued my interest even more. But she never let me near them.

I remember she said there was never a reason to get attached to one.

We kept Insignifcants as pets. I guess it made sense. Insignificants were small enough to fit in our hands, and they couldn't speak our language. They needed one of us to survive.

I always wanted one.

I liked the idea of protecting something so small when the world seemed so large already. I always thought I would make a good owner. I wouldn't expect a lot from an Insignificant. I just wanted a little friend, but of course mom was against it. I guess as a Gatherer she knew things about Insignificants that I didn't, but that didn't make me want one any less.

I couldn't understand how some of my friends were 'able to have Insignificants', but I wasn't. Mom said I wasn't prepared, but I could handle it.

I was fifteen years old and though I might have made a mistake in the past, I was ready for the responsibility. I wasn't a stupid kid anymore. Besides, would a stupid kid always know where the spare key was to the room where the Insignifcants were kept? Would a stupid kid knew how to talk to the targeted Insignificants so they wouldn't be frightened?

Targets.

That's what my mom called the little ones she kept in the blue light room.

My mom was pretty good at what she did because she had an Insignificant specially trained to get others and bring them back here. I figured she must have been pretty extraordinary to have a person trained to betray his own race. He always delivered the people to her and he would always come back with more.

There were usually about twenty or so in our house at any given time. Mom was the one who sold them or auctioned them off. A small percentage of the profit always went to the Targeter.

I guess that's why he kept coming back.

I'd only seen the Targeter a few times, and I was always shocked because he only looked a few years older than me.

But he was small.

Damn. Insignificants were so small.

I rarely got to see the Insignificants because mom kept them under lock and key. However, I knew where the spare key was and I would occasionally sneak into the room and visit the her targets. I was pretty sure they liked it when I tapped on their plastic cages and gave them some attention, but I was always too scared to take them out. It was for their own safety so rather than risk dropping one, or letting one slip through my fingers, I let them stay in their cages. They liked it better that way, but it would totally different if I had one of my own.

I wanted one so I could talk to him. Mom said they had their own language, but it was simple and not worth taking the time to learn. I always questioned if that was true. Insignificants must have had some sort of language complex enough so mom could work out a payment deal with the Targeter, but I never pointed this out to her. She also mentioned that Insignificants could only communicate with us if they were wearing a collar and if she was wearing her earpiece. I had to wonder... why a collar? She said it was because it was easier to manipulate their vocal cords.

Only the Targeter was allowed to wear a collar on a regular basis, but my mom had more. I didn't understand why the others in the cages couldn't also wear one. I'd want to talk to my Insignificant all the time if I could! I didn't even know how the collar worked, but if it meant we could communicate, then of course I'd want them to wear one.

When I asked mom about this she said it just makes things easier. (Whatever that meant.) I guess by wearing the collar it made it easier to view Insignificants as pets. I wondered how I would feel if my cat from a few years ago started to talk and make demands. I think I would have liked it. And know I would have liked to talk to an Insignificant and learn more about their world.

None of my friends who had an Insignificant put a collar on them. They'd occasionally bring them to school and keep them out of sight for fun, but the best was when I could go over to their houses and observe them without restraint.

My friend Tallis had an older male Insignificant who actually belonged to his dad, but they hung out from time-to-time when he was at work and his mom was busy. It was cool, but it was also one of the weirdest things I'd ever seen.

A tiny little person.

My desire to own an Insignificant returned on a particular day when Tallis invited me and a bunch of guys over to try out a new video game. He was 'babysitting' his dad's Insignificant for the afternoon while his mom ran errands.

“I thought we were here to play video games,” Devens grumbled as we all crowded around the coffee table.

“I'm starving,” Ansy said. “Where's the food?”

“In a minute,” Tallis said, holding up his cupped hands. “I've got it.”

“It?” I tilted my head.

“My dad's Insignificant.” He held up his hands and shook them. A high-pitched, but still masculine voice yelp inside.

Some of my friends grew interested, but most of them rolled their eyes.

“Who cares?” Ansy groaned as he pushed away from the coffee table so he could stand up. “I've seen them before. I'm hungry.”

“So feed your fat ass,” Tallis said.

“I will.”

“Is he really in there?” I asked as I lowered my voice.

“Sure is.” Tallis beamed. “My mom's out shopping and he's always a hassle so she asked me to watch him.”

“How's he a hassle?” I started to ask.

“I want to see it,” Martel chimed in.

“Me too,” I said quickly. My earlier question was already forgotten.

“Alright settle your asses,” Tallis said. He started to lower his hands to the coffee table and several of us eagerly leaned forward. For having a mom who gathered Insignificants as a part-time job, I didn't get to see them very often.

“Won't it run?” Martel asked.

Tallis smirked. “He knows better. He may be an Insignificant, but he's not stupid.” He shook his cupped hands. “Aren't you, little guy?”

My eyes widened. “He... he understands you?”

“No. Not really,” Tallis said. “But he gets the gist.”

“Does he have a collar?” I asked next.

“What?” Tallis looked confused. “Do you have any idea how expensive those things are? Insignificants are costly enough, especially for being so tiny. Now shut your stupid face, or you'll freak him out.”

I locked my lips together in anticipation as Tallis' fingers started to un-thread and a tiny being appeared through the cracks.

“Stay, Tack,” Tallis said in a warning voice as tiny sneakers hit the surface of the coffee table. “You run, you go back in cage. Got it?”

The smaller guy looked up at Tallis and nodded hard.

“He does understand you,” I breathed.

“I told you he gets the damn gist. He knows enough.” Tallis' eyes flickered back down to the tiny man. “Behave,” he warned. “No run.”

Another nod.

Unable to help myself, I leaned over the coffee table to get a better look.

“He looks just like us,” I said softly.

“No duh,” Tallis snapped back. “Just a little doll version of one of us, really. He likes my dad the best.”

“But I thought...” I trailed off and tried to focus on the Insignificant. I didn't know when I would get another opportunity to see another one this close, so I leaned in without apologizing. This particular one had dark brown hair and despite his diminutive stature, he looked strong. “He looks a lot older than us.”

Tallis shrugged. “He probably is. Like I said, he likes dad the best. I dunno. It's not like we can ask him his age.”

“But he understands you.”

“He understands commands,” Tallis clarified. At that point most of my friends had lost interest and had started to boot up the video game, but I was hooked all over again.

He reminded me so much of her.

“I need food,” Tallis said loudly. He quickly shot up to his feet and Tack staggered backwards and landed on his butt. Tallis grumbled. “Oh relax,” he said down to him before turning towards me. “Watch him, okay?”

“S-sure,” I said, stumbling over my words as the tiny guy stood up. No one paid any attention to him anymore. It was just us.

“Hey there, little guy,” I said, keeping my voice low as I started to reach for him. He stumbled away just like before and I pulled my hand back. “No?” I asked.

Shockingly, he jerked his head up and down hard.

“No? No, you don't want me to touch you?”

He tilted his head with a confused expression and I tried to simplify my words and ignore my friend's loud shouting.

I raised my hand towards him and he flinched. “No?” I asked again. “No touch?” I reached for him. He jumped back and I smiled as he shook his head again.

“No,” I said with a smile. “No touch then.” He didn't smile back. I said my name, pat my chest and tilted my head to look at him. “Understand?”

He nodded.

“Great!” I said loudly.

“Will you shut up?” Martel called over.

“You shut up!” I hissed back. Tack took a few hesitant steps away and immediately I lowered my voice. “S-sorry,” I mumbled. “Sorry.” I lowered my eyes, ashamed that I was scaring him. I was starting to feel like a monster in my skin.

“So... uh,” I started. I repeated my name, touched my chest and pointed at him. “And you're Tack, right?” I smiled and pointed at him. “Tack?”

I started to smile, fully expecting another nod, but instead he jerked his head back and forth.

“No?” I was shocked. “No Tack?”

Another sharp head shake.

“Tallis,” I called. “I thought you said his name's Tack.”

“It is,” he called from the kitchen.

“But...” I frowned and glanced down at the Insignificant, arching a brow. “No Tack?”

Another shake.

Tallis came back over and sat next to me on the floor. Tack flinched.

“What?” he snapped. “What's wrong now?”

“He keeps shaking his head no when I ask him if his name's Tack.”

“Does he?” Tallis frowned and the Insignificant took another slow step backward. “I thought I told you to behave.” I was surprised to hear his voice turn into a growl.

“Tallis, he was... it was just...”

“That's enough,” Tallis said, rolling his eyes. “You don't own one, so you don't know. Tack, I thought I told you to behave. You know damn well what your name is.”

“Maybe that's not his name—”

“Of course it's his name,” Ansy called over.

“Well, maybe he had a different name back home,” I started.

“That's stupid,” Tallis snapped back. “Alright Tack, you're going upstairs.” He started to reach forward and Tack scrambled away, fear written all over his tiny features.

“Tallis, maybe you—”

Tack let out another yelp as Tallis gripped him suddenly in a fist.

“You're holding him too tight,” I said, standing up. “Come on. He's fine. I'll watch him.”

“He needs to go lay down anyway,” Tallis said. “Sit down. Relax. I'll handle it.”

“But—”

“Sit down and let him deal with it,” Martel moaned.

I finally gave up because I didn't want to fight with Martel over a Insignificant. But still. I watched helplessly as Tallis stormed upstairs.

“He understood me,” I said as I flopped back down on the couch. “He told me his name wasn't Tack. It's something else.”

“He probably didn't know what he was saying,” Martel went on. “He's an Insignificant. They nod and shake their heads at everything.”

“No.” My voice was firm. “He understood me. His name isn't Tack.”

“Who cares?” Ansy said. “Come on. Join in the game and shut up about it.”

“But. Don't you think it's weird—”

“No. Now come on, loser.”

Though I rolled my eyes and eventually joined in, Tallis' Insignificant wasn't far from my mind. It wasn't a fluke. Tack understood me. Just like she had. His name wasn't Tack. It was just another stupid pet name.

And if Tack had another name, I wondered what else he had.

Another language?

Another life?

For the first time in five years I was super curious all over again. I had always wanted to protect an Insignificant, but in that moment I wanted one even more than ever before. I wanted to learn more about them. I wanted a little guy because I would never silence him.

I had to find a way to get one behind my mother's back.
