Where to start in The Demonic Series: Roses at Dusk! Reviews Welcomed.
She waited in the blackness. Silently breathing in the night air, willing her eyes to adjust, praying she couldn't be heard.
Hannah knew she had just minutes to make it out alive. She peered through the gloom toward the sanctuary of the sea. The moon was rising in silver shadow. The sounds of distant crackling, breaking the silence from the eerie flames the angels had set. Head down she finally plunged into obscurity, seeking haven in the bordering trees. One last burst. One last sprint for freedom, Hannah rushed along the softness of the ivory sands. She dared a glance back at her cliff top which was now a mile away. Only the sound of the sea’s soft ebb and flow could be heard. Danger was not yet in pursuit.

It was dark, only illuminated by flowing shades of red coming from pockets of fire rising out of the ground. Smoke and heat haze filled the air. Charred remains of burnt-out tree carcasses littered the surrounds as molten rock and parched earth stretched as far as the eye could see. Lucas looked down at the blazing earth beneath him. His skin was already welting from the intense heat. It was then that he noticed that he had landed in the middle of a tiny island, in the dead center of a pool. He didn't dare move. The liquid surface that encircled his safe place was bubbling, spitting sparks into the sky. One slip and he would only feel pain.
A movement on the horizon caught Lucas’s eye. Perched on a withered branch, watching him was an enormous black crow. On either side, Lucas could make out only shadow. A ring of dark silhouette faces stood motionless.
“Somebody help me!” Steam billowed skyward as his shrieks reached fever pitch. The figures remained silent, as Lucas tumbled sidelong into the molten heat.

It was still. A tense still, riddled with anticipation. I flicked on the light which haloed an eerie glow over the heart of the room. His painting hung there – cold and uninviting. I stepped close to it and pressed my hand to the surface, willing my earthly body to pass through. Shutting my eyes I pressed my cheek to his, feeling the cold texture bite my skin. His painting felt like a door to his world, where I could not follow. I went rigid, suddenly immobilized with terror.
Whispers were coming from deep within the wall. Louder and courser they grew, hundreds of voices, a babble of sound: I tried to pull back but I was being sucked closer to the noise. The huge canvas began to flex and contort. I strained to let go, but the painting wouldn't release me. I tried screaming but it just lodged in my throat. Only a whisper escaped.

When morning came it was a fitting tribute to the night before. My eyes were nudged by the warm breath of the sun shining golden ribbons through the gap in the drapes. I chanced a glance outside. The storm clouds had been replaced by an endless blanket of teal. All around my room, the surfaces were draped with strands of wax, once melted had petrified in their patterns in time. The candles were now long gone, but the scent of cherry blossom hung deliciously in the morning air. The aroma flooded my memories of each moment we had shared. He had bared his soul, in rolling fields of heather and dancing waterfalls under crystal skies of blue.
