She waited in the blackness. Silently breathing in the night air, willing her eyes to adjust, praying she couldn't be heard.
Hannah knew she had just minutes to make it out alive. She peered through the gloom toward the sanctuary of the sea. The moon was rising in silver shadow. The sounds of distant crackling, breaking the silence from the eerie flames the angels had set. Head down she finally plunged into obscurity, seeking haven in the bordering trees. One last burst. One last sprint for freedom, Hannah rushed along the softness of the ivory sands. She dared a glance back at her cliff top which was now a mile away. Only the sound of the sea’s soft ebb and flow could be heard. Danger was not yet in pursuit.
