Carl Deuker I loved books growing up. Actually being a published writer felt impossible, so to actually become part of that world has been very gratifying.

New book -- rising action!

A few more minutes, and I figure I can say goodnight to my parents and my sister, take a long shower, and climb into my bed.
I won’t sleep; I’ll go over the game play-by-play like I do after every game, reliving my good plays, my bad plays, my so-so plays. The sting of losing won’t go away, but at least I’ll be alone.
As my dad turns into our driveway, the VW’s headlights light up our porch. “Our f Read more of this blog post »

Great opening, but downhill from there. Older deserted woman, titled, falls for young, poor astronomer. He loves her as well. Many problems arise, some authentic (he is 20, too young to know his heart) but many of the potboiler ilk. Dead husband died ...more

Cromwell, the Roundheads, the Civil War, the protectorate . . . all vague in my head until this book. A very interesting chapter in English history, and a very interesting man.

Watched a 1970 version with Charlton Heston as Antony. The print quality was terrible, but the play is nevertheless quite good. Heston is a far better actor then he's given credit for. Jason Robards as Brutus was equally effective. Well worth watchin ...more

Charlie Cullen was not a good nurse. He was responsible (perhaps) for as many as 400 hospital and nursing home deaths. These weren't mercy killings; they were crimes of opportunity.

Carl is 80% done with The Good Nurse: Charlie Cullen finally about to be caught. Amazing that he was able to kill at so many hospitals for so long. Truly shows the desperation of hospitals to get qualified nurses as he had numerous red flags. At this point in the story he's the major suspect, has just been fired, and still gets a job offer.

“Games are lost and won in your mind as much as they are on the field.”
Carl Deuker, Gym Candy

“There was no anger in his voice, no disappointment even. It was as if he'd given up on me. He pulled his keys out of his pocket. "I should be going now. Merry Christmas, Nick”
Carl Deuker, Night Hoops

“I heard Coach Downs never started freshman," he told us. "Well that's not how it is with me. I play the best players, period. If you're a junior with three letters on your jacket, and you shave twice a day, and some smooth-faced freshman whips your ass in practice, then your collecting splinters while he's playing. Understood?
Coach Carlson”
Carl Deuker, Gym Candy

“What she was finding also was how one book led to another, doors kept opening wherever she turned and the days weren't long enough for the reading she wanted to do.”
Alan Bennett, The Uncommon Reader

“The truth is that nothing is less sensational than pestilence, and by reason of their very duration great misfortunes are monotonous. In”
Albert Camus, The Plague

“he turned and, leaning against the shop-front, watched Rieux approach. “Oh, Doctor, Doctor!” He could say no more. Rieux, too, couldn’t speak; he made a vague, understanding gesture. At this moment he suffered with Grand’s sorrow, and what filled his breast was the passionate indignation we feel when”
