I halt in the doorway, taking in Syd's body. Unbelievably, she is back for round two. More unbelievably, I let the little crook into my house again. I still have no idea what I would tell Karl about a hotel charge, though. I will just have to keep an eye on her this time. “You're lying.” She turns to face me. “There's no downstairs. Is your mom that type who shows up every week to do the cooking and cleaning? “Can you stop asking stupid questions?” She blows air through her teeth. “You suck.” “Oh, be quiet.” I bat my hair out of my eyes. “Want some wine?” She drops her purse on the floor next to my bed. “That's more like it.” “Red or white?” “Didn't realize I was in the presence of Dionysus.” She perches on the edge of the mattress. “Red, please.” I consider skipping the drinks altogether and just taking her right there. So many beautiful things await under those clothes, ready to be explored all over again. Instead, I turn around and cross the house to the kitchen. A half bottle of Malbec waits in the fridge. I pour a glass, think better of it, and pour one for myself too. Then I return to the bedroom. She has her shoes off, sitting cross-legged on the bed, but hasn't removed anything else. Thankfully. That's part of the fun. I knock the door shut with my foot and hand her a glass. She sips her wine, looking oddly sophisticated for someone with Ozzy Osbourne eye makeup and enough silver in her ears to take down a werewolf. She peers up at me. “Is it a celebrity?” I stare at her, dumbly. “The person you protect, is it a celebrity?” Her eyes light up. “Oh! Is it Stevie Nicks?” “What? No.” “Linda Ronstadt?” “No.” She bounces a little on the mattress. “Is it Jenna Jameson?” “Good god, Syd.” I move forward and take her glass, then place it with mine on the nightstand. She says, “You didn't drink any of your wine. Did you—”

Excerpt: There are no woods in Demoria, so our hunt is along the back of the city, in a massive canyon. Demorians do not ride, as the area is not very large to traverse, but they do use the uneven terrain to their advantage. We settle in behind a mossy boulder and look out over the expanse. Wild dogs prowl through the trenches; rabbits scamper along elevated knolls. “Demoria is not so bad when it’s behind me,” I say. The vast landscape is beautiful in the shifting pinks and purples of dawn. It felt the same way yesterday afternoon atop the lighthouse. “That is how most things are in life,” Seamus concedes. He places his gun on the ground and unpacks his bag. He reveals a box of tarts in ten different flavors. Damn. “Not fair,” I say, already stuffing my face with passion fruit tart. “I did my research.” We sit in pleasant, tart-filled silence for a while, fruit pastries winning over my taste buds. They are less recalcitrant than my stubborn heart. Sanara is right; Seamus is kind of cute. He has a boyish charm, especially for someone who has probably seen things I could never even imagine. “How many people have you killed?” I’m not known for my tact. “Too many to count,” he answers quickly, not ashamed. “Don't you ever think about who they were? Doesn't it bother you?” “I know each of their names. I know who they were, and I know who was left behind when I did my job.” He’s defiant. I don't really blame him. He is a Demorian; killing is what he does. “Still, I mean, just because someone tells you to kill someone...” “I was ready to get you this morning, with exactly the right kind of bow and arrows, and a box of tarts, because I did not sleep for more than a couple hours. As charming as you are, that was not because my heart was all a-flutter at seeing you. It was because a good night is four hours.” “So why do it?” “Because someone has to, and it was destined to be me.” “I don't believe in fate. We make our own destinies,” I argue. “It is easier to say that when you are not trained to be an assassin,” he counters. Silence settles back over us. I think about what he says. Would I be who I am if I’d been raised differently? Does being born somewhere or being of a certain blood dictate the person each of us becomes? I can’t picture a different me somewhere, destined to marry and doing it because it was the assigned path I would take. Although maybe he’s right. None of my choices have involved considering the fate of another human being. If he admits that he had any control over his own life, he admits that he made the choice to murder someone else. That would be unbearable, and I empathize with his conviction that some part of our lives is set out for us before we start. “I need to be back early. Tonight is a big deal.” “Ah yes, our betrothal debut.” His tone is mocking, but it’s not an angry mockery. “It doesn't bother you, does it? Marrying me?” “I’m lucky to be engaged to you. I understand why you don't feel the same.” He packs up the rest of the tarts and stands. Bending over, he offers his hand to assist me in getting up. I am on my feet quickly, but I don’t let go of his hand right away. “Seamus, it isn't you. Of the potential mates my parents have proposed, you are the best of them.” It’s the only thing I can provide him, but it’s true. Under different circumstances, he may have even been my own choice.
Dream Cast: pdcast About the Author:Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She's written works in various genres - romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn't as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she's been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships - romantic, familial, friendly - because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn't matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future - human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah's stories. Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun. When Sarah isn't writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking the Internet for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window. She has written several books, most notably Bitter Fruits, an urban fantasy in the Eden’s Fall series, Backward Compatible: A Geek Love Story, and the six book New Adult Flowering series, including Forget Me Not, Lily of the Valley, Blue Rose, Star of Bethlehem, Orange Blossom, and Ambrosia.

Dominion (Dominion #1)by S.E. Lund

I had no idea what to expect the night I went in search of a translator for an 800-year old French illuminated manuscript but it certainly wasn't what I found -- Michel and Julien de Cernay: 800-year old identical twin vampire brothers – beautiful, tempermental opposites, both wanting me for themselves.

Michel -- dark, brooding, control-freak, former priest who broke his vows the night he was turned into a vampire. Julien -- impetuous, valiant, passionate, a brave knight who lost his life on a battlefield when a vampire claimed him.

Caught between the two brothers, I search for the truth about my mother's death, my birth, and the fight to prevent Dominion – vampire rule over humans. My mother gave her life to keep me safe, but was unable to protect herself. Now, I can't escape this fate nor can I escape them -- even if I wanted to.

This is my story.

Here Be Sexist Vampires(The Deep In Your Veins Series)
by Suzanna Wright

Sam Parker is a vampire with a gift so strong and substantial that she is invited to partake in a test for a place in the Grand High Master Vampire’s private army. She finds that not only has the army never included a woman, but it has never included a Sventé vampire; a breed that is regarded by the super strong Pagori breed and the hypnotically beautiful Keja breed to be too tame and human-like. Most refuse to take her seriously, especially a Pagori commander named Jared who she craves in spite of herself. The Grand High Master, however, sees her potential and offers her the position of Jared’s co-commander to help train the newest squad in time for the impending attack on his home. Sam has to demonstrate to Jared and the squad of chauvinists why it is incredibly foolish to underestimate a wilful, temperamental, borderline-homicidal Sventé female.

Warning: This novel contains an iron-willed female vampire with an energy whip, a sexist male vampire who is determined to have her, explicit vampy sex, and a romance story with real bite. She also meets his brother Julien, a brash and mercurial opposite to Michel's calm determination. The temperamental opposite of Michel, Julien tries to complicate the budding romance between Eve and Michel in the hopes of winning Eve for himself. The brothers play a dangerous game of power with an ancient enemy in an effort to prevent Dominion -- when vampires rule over humans.
Gifted with paranormal skills, planning to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a vampire hunter, Eve is torn between loyalty to her mother’s cause and her desire for these twins.
Erotic, suspenseful and fast-paced, the Dominion series will keep you turning pages as Eve searches for the truth about her mother’s death, her birth and her desires.

Dark Light (Dark Light #1)by S.L. Jennings

Love. Sex. Magic. Before her 20th birthday, Gabriella was pretty much clueless about all three. In love with her best guy friend since the age of 14 and too crass and intimidating for most of the male population of Colorado Springs, love and good sex were virtually a myth.
And then there’s magic. Freakin’ magic. There’s no way that legend could have a place in her less than exciting life. So why after twenty years of utter obscurity do her adopted parents hit her with the ton of bricks that is her true identity? And how the heck is she supposed to accept all this and become what she was truly created to be?
Lucky for Gabs, sexy as sin Dorian is more than equipped to help her embrace these new revelations. And while everything about him feels oh so good, she soon learns that there’s more behind his crystal blue eyes, chiseled body and exotic beauty. Something dark, menacing and downright unnatural. Yet Gabs is in way too deep to even try to turn away from him now.
Dark Light, Book 1 of the Dark Light Series, is the raw, emotional story of a young woman’s journey of self-discovery in a world that was not meant for her. And her scorching hot, lip-biting addiction for the man she can’t deny, no matter the cost.

Blog Tour: All I want is You by Toni Blake, USA Today bestselling author.

SYNOPSIS:

Toni Blake’s new heartfelt Coral Cove series brings Blake’s incredible talent of creating a story that’s filled with hope and love. ALL I WANT IS YOU starts off the series with the story of Christy Knight, a character who appeared in her Destiny series. Readers will remember Christy from her encounter with Anna Romo, the heroine of Hall Moon Hill (a 2014 RITA Award Finalist), the last installment in the Destiny series. Christy’s life changed when a horrible fire claimed the lives of her mother and father; she’s left to deal with the aftermath of financial troubles on her own. Christy grew up in the small, cozy town Destiny, Ohio, but she feels her future lies elsewhere. In hopes of figuring out what’s next, she’s decided to move to the city.

Christy and her roommate Bethany are struggling to make ends meet. The beautiful jewelry she creates doesn’t pay the bills. To top it off, Christy’s just found out about her Grandpa Charlie’s own financial troubles and that he may be asked to leave his assisted living home. As his only living relative left, Christy feels it’s up to her to help but she can barely help herself. Bethany thinks it’s time for Christy to grow up and find a guy who’s smart, sexy, and solvent. Though Christy’s hesitant about the plan—she’s a romantic at heart after all—faced with few options she’s willing to give it a shot.
The search spells disaster from day one. Her first date fails before it even starts! She did, however, meet her sexy neighbor Jack DuVall. He’s not quite the man she needs at the moment—if only his blue eyes weren’t so mesmerizing. It seems the rugged handyman fits the first two categories (smart and sexy), but he’s all wrong for her. As Jack helps Christy with small patch-up jobs around the apartment, they develop a friendship. Jack hasn’t been entirely forthcoming, he’s not really just a handyman and he’s nowhere near broke. Wary of trusting others because of a painful past he doesn’t want to revisit, he thinks it’s best to wait before sharing too much information about himself.

Meanwhile, Grandpa Charlie thinks it’s time for Christy to take a break from her day-to-day stresses and get some much needed R&R by visiting him in sunny Coral Cove.  Knowing she’s short on funds, Jack wants to help Christy make the trip happen, but how can he without exposing that he’s actually loaded? He joins her under the pretext of needing a vacation as well, splitting the expenses.  As the long hot days turn into sizzling nights together, Jack can’t deny his reasons for going along are far from noble.

The Coral Cove charm captivates Christy and Jack, and a passionate, loving relationship blossoms. Jack finds he had it all wrong—Christy’s not only gorgeous, but feisty and completely irresistible; after so much heartbreak and let downs Christy feels she finally has someone she can trust. But, when Jack shares secrets he’s been holding back, the relationship is compromised. As they both struggle to find their way back to each other, the quirky seaside town of Coral Cove could prove the perfect place to find a red-hot destiny of their own.
ALL I WANT IS YOUis a brilliant start to a heartwarming and sexy series, filled with Blake’s relatable blend of inspiring, passionate stories of hope and new beginnings. Readers will fall in love with the seaside town of Coral Cove and its quirky characters over and over again.

EXCERPT:

Christy stood before him frozen in horror.  Of so many kinds.  Frustration that bordered on agony.  Embarrassment that – oh God – he was really turning her down again.  And hurt.  There was no other way to describe that part of it – it simply hurt, so unbelievably much that she wondered how she would survive it. As her lower lip began to tremble, she bit down on it, trying not to let him see.  Not that that was enough to help this situation even one iota.  She wanted desperately to rehook her bra, but she couldn't do it from this angle and could only hold it helplessly in place over her breasts.  She'd never felt so rejected in her life.Trying to swallow back her pain, a spark of anger erupted from her.  "Why did you have to start kissing me?  Why did you even start this at all?"  She could no longer meet his gaze – what had become easy and effortless had now grown impossible again.  At some point her eyes had become stuck on his chest because, hot and masculine though it was, it still seemed a safer place to look."I'm so sorry, honey," he said.  "I ... didn't mean to exactly.  I didn't plan it.  It's just that you're ... really beautiful when you're passionate about something, that's all."She pulled in her breath, both flattered and bewildered – and Anna's words came back to her.  About going for it.  About never knowing how things would have gone if you didn't.  So even now, even as reckless as it seemed, she didn't hold back.  "I'm passionate about you, Jack."He let out a heavy breath.  And her heart beat so hard it hurt.  "I'm passionate about you, too, Christy,” he said.  “Believe me, I am.  I just ...""What?" she demanded. Now it was he who looked away, dropping his gaze to the flowered print of her skirt.  "Maybe I'm just worried about … attachment.”“Attachment?” she asked. He spoke more directly this time.  “Maybe I'm worried that I'll get attached to you, or you'll get attached to me."I'm already attached to you.  But this time she held the words in.  Since putting it on the line didn't seem to be working in this case.  Who'd have thought getting lucrative consignment deals for her jewelry would be so much easier than giving herself to a man – and getting him to take her.  Somehow Anna's simple story had made Christy believe that if she put her heart out there for him to see, she'd find out he loved her, too.  Anna had made it sound ... hard, and yet at the same time so very simple.  Like the happy ending would just come if you willed it to.  So where was her happy ending?  And why had she been so foolish to believe it could be that easy?Instead of saying any of that, though – instead of forcing out any more honesty and openness – now she found herself trying to deal in logic.  "I thought you said we'd come to Florida and see what happened.  That we'd let things take their course, go with the flow.  You're stopping the flow."He looked so pained for her now that she knew her own pain was written all over her face.  It didn't matter what she said – she'd already made herself as vulnerable as a person could be.  And the thing about vulnerability was – once it was out there, you couldn't take it back.  She couldn't take it back.  Anymore than she could rehook her bra."That seemed like a good idea at the time,” Jack said, eyes still fraught with distress.  “But I'm not sure it's that simple now.  I mean, it's like I said – I'm afraid ... one of us will get attached.""Don't you think,” she began desperately albeit still logically, “that most sex attaches people?  In some way?  Even if they pretend it doesn't?"  Oh crap, what was she doing?  Spilling her heart out onto the floor some more, that was all.  And maybe saying things she didn't even really know she felt until this very moment.  "And the truth is – I wouldn't want to have sex with anyone I might not get attached to.  It's a connection.  It's supposed to mean something.  Even if the whole world has tried to make it into nothing more than a recreational activity."  She stopped, sighed, let her gaze drop – because she realized she'd met his eyes again in the course of spewing out all this stupid honesty.  And she felt all the more naked, but it had nothing to do with her state of undress.  When she next spoke, her voice went softer.  "Or that's how it feels to me anyway.  So if getting attached sounds so horrible to you, then I guess it's just as well you stopped."

Chapter 1How do you describe the feeling you get the first time you drive down a long, winding road to a place that is all yours? To Andy Friessen, this wasn’t just a house or a piece of land: he had staked a claim in another state, in another part of the county, uprooting his family and selling everything, all for a brand new beginning. Andy took in the miles of vast hillside and the cleanest pastures he’d ever seen. The green grass swayed in the wind and, for the first time, he sensed the sun, the moon, the stars and the changing of the seasons more deeply than he ever had before. This was a part of the country he had never travelled, but it felt like coming home. He glanced over at his wife, Laura, asleep in the passenger seat, her head resting against the door, her breath whispering softly in and out. He always knew when she was overtired, as she snored in her soft, delicate way. This time, she stirred a bit before settling into a deep sleep, as if her body had finally run out of steam. She was on edge and had been for some time, but that wasn’t unusual for a mother of newborns. For Andy and Laura, there was twice as much stress with their six-week-old twins, Chelsea and Jeremy, who were sound asleep in the backseat of the truck. Their five-year-old big brother, Gabriel, Laura’s son from a pregnancy at fifteen, sat beside them. Laura was so young but had lived through more heartache, rejection and struggle than most people would in a lifetime. As a teenager, she had been tossed out onto the street by her judgmental parents, who thought she was a bad influence on her younger brothers. Laura had only mentioned it once to Andy, and only when he pushed. He wanted to know what had happened, to know everything about her family, but he saw the deep hurt like a tread mark on her soul. No matter what he did, he wondered if that was something she’d never be able to make peace with. Andy wouldn’t, not in this lifetime. In fact, George and Sue Parnell were the first people Andy had ever hated without even meeting them. They had come so far, Laura and him. At first, the only reason he had married her was to save her son when the state took him away. Laura and Gabriel had been living in her car, and Andy had married her because he felt responsible for the entire mess. After all, it had been his mother who fired Laura from her position as a maid in the Friessen house. Andy had treated her horribly at first, but so much had changed since then. He loved her—his child bride, as everyone teased him. She had recently turned twenty-one, legal in every state, and Andy would soon be thirty-three. Andy pressed the brakes to slow his pickup as the ruts deepened on the driveway. The horse trailer rattled, and he glanced in the side mirror and rolled down his window just as his three-year-old buckskin mare, Ladystar, nickered. Apparently, she’d had enough of this two-day trip, leaving North Lakewood behind and moving two states away to a seventy-two-acre spread Andy had purchased outside of Columbia Falls, Montana. “Where are we?” Laura said. She didn’t open her eyes as she yawned. Her short bob was a tangled mess, but it was cute. Andy had been irritated when she cut off all her hair, saying it was easier to look after. Maybe so, but he liked her long hair. “Andy?” she said. The leather seat rustled as she sat up. Andy had to clear his throat. “We should be close.…” He stepped on the brakes when a sprawling one-story ranch house came into view. It had a light wood finish and a post-and-beam front deck, but something about the place didn’t look right. The railing appeared broken, with pieces of wood scattered here and there. Everything looked unkempt. Piles of debris littered the yard, including a rusted-out pickup with missing wheels parked in waist-high grass that was now weighted down by the melting snow. Maybe he had the wrong place? He eased on the gas pedal and started up the slight incline that circled the house. It was similar to the photos he had seen, but the house in the photos had been newer than this. A couple of the shutters were hanging sideways, and the fence surrounding the house was falling down, as was the corral, but it was the junk, the debris, the plastic, garbage and scattered metal parts, that pissed him off. “What the hell is this?” He’d bought the place unseen. The Montana realtor had sent photos of the exterior and interior, and maybe Andy should have asked when they had been taken, but he’d been in a hurry to get Laura and the kids as far away from his family as he could. He parked in front of the house and spotted the red and white realty sign leaning against the front step. “Andy, this doesn’t look like the pictures the realtor sent,” Laura said. “Are you sure this is the right place?” One of the babies started fussing, and Ladystar nickered from the trailer. “Andy, are we here?” Gabriel called out from the backseat, rubbing his eyes. “Yeah, just stay there, bud,” Andy said as he opened his door. Laura was reaching over to unbuckle Jeremy from his car seat, his tiny hands flailing. “He hungry?” Laura appeared so tired as she nodded. “I think so. Wet, too.” She patted his bottom and rested him on the seat. “Andy, can you reach the diaper bag on the floor in the back?” She had already unfastened his sleeper as Andy lifted the blue bag, shut the back door and set the bag on his seat. “Just stay in here until I check things out,” he said. Laura glanced up with a weary smile. “Okay.” He shut the door and stepped around the truck, taking in the mess. Ladystar nickered again. “Okay, girl,” he murmured, unlatching the horse trailer and leading his horse out before tying her to the side and bringing out a flake of hay for her. “Better find you some water, too,” he said, pulling out his bucket. Around the side of the house, he found a barn with a missing door, another gated pasture, and a round ring. As he stepped closer, he noticed the round pen appeared intact, with no missing posts and all the rails up. It was probably a safe bet for tonight, at least for Ladystar, until he got a better look around. He found a water tap at the back of the house and turned it on, but rusty water poured out. “Crap!” he muttered, waiting for it to run clear before he filled the bucket. When he took it back to the trailer where Ladystar was tied and eating, Laura opened the door of the truck and called out, “Andy, Gabriel has to go to the bathroom, and so do I. Can we go inside?” Andy took in what was supposed to have been a ten-year-old sprawling rancher, with a wraparound deck where they could spend evenings and mornings looking out over their spread. Instead, it resembled the kind of house his cousin Jed would have picked up for a good price to gut and renovate—not something Andy was interested in doing. “All right,” Andy said. He opened the back door and lifted Gabriel, who was already unbuckled and waiting. “Stay here, Gabriel. Hey, Laura, Chelsea is still sleeping.” Andy lifted his very quiet daughter from the car. Laura slid down, carrying Jeremy, who was fussing again. She had on just a beige sweater. “Ooh, it’s cold,” she said. She reached in the truck for her tan jacket and pulled it out, holding it out to Andy so he could help her as she juggled the baby. Laura started up the steps, and Gabriel and Andy followed. At the sound of a vehicle coming down the road, they both turned to see a newer pickup truck flying over the ruts and then pulling in just behind the horse trailer. A woman with a round face, bright smile, and dark hair tied back in a ponytail stepped out, wearing a sheepskin coat and blue jeans. Laura shrieked behind Andy. He turned just as the screen door Laura had pulled fell over and crashed to the front deck. Chelsea, who had been sleeping, whimpered and then started howling along with her brother.

EXCERPT
I can’t get her to look at me, I think she’s ashamed that she has no experience to go with. When I’m finally begging, she looks up and I can’t help it. She looks so lost, so sad. I know that she just needs the courage, but how will she ever find it if she doesn’t know what the reward is like? So I lean over, I place my hand on her cheek, and my lips on hers. She doesn’t freak out, so I use my tongue to entice her. I run it along her lower lip. I feel her breathing pick up and I’m nervous she’ll push me away, but when she doesn’t I try to coax her lips apart so I can really kiss her. When she opens them, her tongue meets mine and I have to keep repeating to myself, “Slow, slow, slow,” or my body might take over and try to push her past her limits. She’s not ready for more than this.I don’t let myself linger too long. I would love to kiss her all night, but she needs baby steps. I need to give her that or this won’t work. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself, but I should’ve made sure it was okay first.” I say it knowing that she needed the surprise of it or it would’ve never happened. Her response takes me by surprise, “Don’t. Be. Sorry.” She is breathing hard and can’t form a sentence. I love it. That means she loved it. When she brings her hand up to touch her lips, I know I can make this better for her. I stop her hand with mine and leaving the other on her cheek, I lean back in for a deeper kiss. She responds immediately. I make this one longer, but not much. This time when I pull back, we are both panting for air.“Wow.” A simple statement from her confirming that she liked it.

Excerpt:

Brian stood with one hand on his daughter’s shoulder and one on his son’s, looking out over Erin’s bowed head. He felt like he’d been thrown back in time, back to a day he would never forget. Their blond heads perfectly matched as they tilted toward each other in an iron embrace. He remembered the day like it was yesterday, the picture clear as the bright blue sky above. He knew right then—with every breath—he loved Melissa. Who gets this stuff at eight years old? He would’ve laughed at the idea if he had the energy. Who the hell understands what love is at eight? It didn’t make sense, but he couldn’t deny it.Watching Melissa and Ali cry over their father’s coffin twenty-six years ago was so like today. There they stood, holding each other again, Ali’s hand reached out to Johnny’s, but her arm around Melissa, their heads together, crying all over again. He remembered how hard it had been for them both. He wanted to cry, too, and he did, for Ali and for Melissa. It hurt him in his soul to see the pain and tears in her eyes. He looked again at Julie’s shining coffin glinting in the bright sun and wanted to kick himself for thinking about Melissa on this day, the very day he had to put his wife in the ground. If Julie could hear his thoughts, she would hate him. Ironically enough, so would Melissa. Melissa would never respect him, not after what he’d done to her, especially if she knew what he was thinking about now.  How did we get here? How did so many things change since that day?Nothing had turned out the way he’d planned. Back then, and for years after, his future was sure. He never doubted where life would lead him. But how could he regret? How could he—as he stood there with his kids—regret his family? Regret his life to this point? Regret Julie? No, he didn’t, of course not, but regret Melissa? Yes, he regretted losing Melissa. He loved Erin and Cody with his whole heart. He’d loved Julie, too, but Melissa was different. He couldn’t explain it, just different than Julie. Melissa held a part of his soul. To this day, she still gripped it in her hands. That part of him had been missing the day he’d proposed to Julie, and every day since then.  Melissa will always have it, even after she marries that jerk-off from Berkeley. Even then, she’ll still own a part of him. His stomach lurched at the thought of her with him, that puny, little clone with no heart or passion. Melissa was full of piss and vinegar, how long would it take this jerk to squash that out of her. Is this what it felt like to Melissa? Had she felt this sinking, overwhelming sickness when she’d found out about him and Julie? Had she been living with it for all these years? Had her love for him been equal to his for her? He couldn’t remember if he’d ever told her how much he loved her. Did she know? Did that make everything harder for her? Did Julie understand how much he loved her? It’s too late to fix that—she’s gone—Jules is gone. Julie is dead! Did she understand how important she was to him? Even after the hateful things he’d said, he still loved her, and now she was gone.

EXCERPT:
Her hands were on my waist and clutching the untucked flannel she’d told me was a hot wardrobe choice earlier that evening. I dropped one hand to the small of her back and pressed her against where I ached for her the most. Both our chests heaved, and we gasped for air, though neither of us moved any closer. Becki slid her hands under the t-shirt I had on under my flannel. Her soft, warm hands swept across my sides and up my back until she was holding onto my shoulders from behind. Her nails dug in; not enough to break the skin but just enough to buckle my knees slightly. There was a fire ignited in both of us during those few moments, one that would be nearly impossible to squelch.“Calon?” She spoke between a couple deep breaths.“Yeah?”“I want to kiss you so badly.” She pulled back a little and looked up at me. “Yeah.” I was speechless at how far she’d climbed into my soul without even kissing me. “I’d like that an awful lot, but I want you to let me know when you’re ready.”“I’ve never been too picky about the guys I make out with.” She rolled her eyes and turned away from me a little as if she was embarrassed.“Okayyy.” I drew out the word and chuckled completely out of discomfort. I had no idea where she was going with that comment.“No, listen a minute. That gets old. It makes kissing as easy as—as dancing with someone. And, I read somewhere that kissing can actually be more intimate than sex. I think that’s what I want. I don’t want it to come too soon. I want to ache for it.” She blinked away the apprehension I sensed in her voice then smiled my favorite shy smile.“Do you ache for me, Becki?” Yeah, I did that on purpose; pulled the sexy romance novel line right out of my head. She dropped her head back and groaned. We both burst out laughing, and I continued walking her to the door to the building.“I mean it, Calon. You only had to turn me down a couple of times to make me reconsider giving away something so intimate, so quickly.” She looked away again and shivered a little in the cool night air. I’d never seen her so unsure of herself. She was letting down her walls.I took off my flannel and draped it over her shoulders then ducked down to catch her offset gaze. “Becki, I want you to know I haven’t kissed anyone since Gracie.”“Okay…one, mentioning making out with my best friend just moments after we almost kiss for the first time just docked you a couple points.” She poked me in the chest. “Second, dude, that was like two yearsago. You can’t be serious.” She shook her head in disbelief then let it fall against my chest.“Okay. One, I’m sorry for mentioning it. Second, yes, I’m serious.” I needed to touch her again, so I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into me, making it look like it was partially to keep her warm when really it was a sure way to feel her against my body again. “I have no doubt a kiss between you and me, whenever it happens, will be worth the wait. You’re worth the wait.”I felt her sigh, and she shook her head against my chest, then pushed herself away from me slowly. “Look, smooth talkin’ rock star, I’ve got a huge exam tomorrow, so you need to go home. Now. I won’t be able to sleep if you stay here getting all deep and shit.”“Oh, sorry for getting all deep and shit.”“I like your deep shit. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t ask you to take me to dinner tomorrow night.”“Right.” I chuckled at how weird she could be. “Okay, then go! Go study. I’ll see you tomorrow. For dinner.”We shared one last way-too-sensual hug, then she bounced through the door and she was gone. I floated home, just me and all my deep shit.
