Hollins Ghost Stories and Personal Experiences

Every school has some sort of supernatural or psychological phenomenon being talked about around campfires and in the dining hall. Here are the stories of Hollins’ ghosts.

The Nurse of Swannanoa and West

There was a time when the English Department was the college infirmary and a time when West switched from being a dorm and a part of the infirmary as well as a few other things. There was a nurse who used to do her rounds every night at the same time. Not much is known about her life or how she died, but I can give you a personal experience with her.

One night while I was feeling a little sick so I dozed off. She was standing over me when I woke up checking my temperature. She was gentle and she talked to me in a low voice as she checked me, hand on forehead and everything. I felt much better.

At one point during the year I was having a coughing problem that persisted for three months. It would keep me from sleeping for hours. When she visited she eased the cough enough so I could sleep.

She’s part residual specter because she is frequently seen making her rounds around the second floor of West as well as all of Swannanoa. She’s intelligent because she can interact with the living.

She’s a friendly spirit, one of many on the campus of Hollins.

Elizabeth of the Theatre

The story about Elizabeth in the theatre is a short one. We don’t know much about her, just her name, but she doesn’t like to be alone so the theatre is always lit at night. She also doesn’t like it if she hears you don’t believe in her or ghosts. People have come down with coughing fits and other problems. She’s friendly otherwise. I always sense her presence at rehearsals and during productions. She must have been a theatre major at one point because the theatre is important to her. I’ve never actually seen her, so I don’t know what she is.

Haunted Presser

Here at Hollins we have two ghosts, one with a tragic story and one with no story at all. We don’t know anything about him.

The first one was a young lady who was a student of a music teacher. She fell madly in love with him while he was married. He carried on the affair, but when it came time to choose he chose his wife. The girl was crushed. She walked into a piano-wielding classroom and slit her wrists before playing until she finally died.

The story says that she can still be heard playing in the halls of the music building, Presser.

There’s one more story, but it’s not the origin of the ghost. He lurks in one of the third floor classrooms of Presser where students go to practice. A girl was practicing for her class the next day and out of the corner of her eye she saw an old man crouching in the corner. At first she thought she was just imagining things, but when she looked full on he was still there, staring at her. The student got up and walked around a bit and he followed her with his eyes.

Reasonably freaked out, she went to the door to leave, but she couldn’t get it to budge. The door could only lock from the inside, but it wasn’t locked. It wouldn’t budge. The more she tried the more she started to panic, so she rushed to a window, threw up the sash and ripped open the screen. She screamed for an hour before the firefighters came. They rushed to the room before finding that the door could be opened.

Based on that story and the feeling I get on the floor he is hostile. I felt him in the day time which is against his MO.

Aborted Baby

There are rumors of a room in Tinker Dorm where a girl had to face the consequences of being unsafe in sex. Pregnant with a child she didn’t want, she didn’t know what to do. So she performed an illegal abortion on herself, killing the child and herself in the process. Rumors say that you can hear a baby’s wail late at night.

Hanged Herself

In Randolph Dorm there is also a room, this one on the second floor, where a student lived and was failing an important class. She couldn’t take the pressure, so while her roommate was gone she followed through on her plan. She hanged herself in her closet. I don’t know if the door of the closet was opened or closed, but her roommate found her. It is believed that you can hear her sobbing and screaming around finals.

Mystery Man in Randy

This one isn’t much of a story, but there is a man in the Randolph Dorm who roams the halls of the first and second floors. He sometimes appears as a dark shadow out of the corner of your eyes. I can tell you he likes bathrooms. I’ve seen him a couple of times. There was a reason I sprinted back to my dorm room from the bathroom at night.

The Green Drawing Room Suicide

There are two versions of this story, the first what everyone says.

A girl had written her dissertation, but it wasn’t good enough. She was a perfectionist and she had to read it out to the group of students and teachers who would be coming to the Green Drawing Room. So she started to read it to the audience and halfway through she pulled out a gun. What did she do with that gun? She shot herself in the head.

There was a girl who killed herself, but she was alone and it was night time. Either way the story ends the same:

It is said that if you look in the mirror in the Green Drawing room you can see the girl’s face staring back at you.

Strange Phenomenon I Have Personally Encountered:

These aren’t stories, but just brief experiences I had personally.

On the way back to my dorm in West I saw girls dancing around a pole in the center of front quad.

I have seen soldiers, disease victims, wheelchairs and gurneys that were waiting to be used, as well as the nurse mentioned earlier in West.

There’s a strange entity down in the basement of the library that isn’t good. I don’t like being down there alone.

Elder Futhark Runes: Wyn

The Elder Futhark Runes were made up of 24 basic runic letters. There were more added at points in time. The basic 24 are the runes that are normally used in divination and runic magic. The Elder Futhark alphabet starts with Feoh and ends with Dag. Each letter has its own meaning and correspondences.

Wyn is the eighth rune in the Elder Futhark alphabet and is the last in the first aett. Wyn stands for joy and prosperity. In magick, joy refers to the balance in nature and the people. It removes anxiety and uncertainty because it is the mid-point between extremes. It is also the prosperity rune since when you are in balance all things are easier. This prosperity doesn’t just include wealth, but also love happiness and joy. It is a great rune to use in combination with other positive runes for added magickal and spiritual energy.

Like the Gyfu rune, the Wyn rune is represented by the Ash tree, especially by the most sacred tree, the Yggdrasil. Ash is the tree traditionally used for making fence posts as well as the handles of tools and weapons.  In this, it represents order.  Ash is also the wood that is used in Druidic wands as it is a great conductor of magickal force or önd.  The smoke from burning Ash is said to chase away evil spirits and negative energy.
