Author Interview

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

I have been writing since I was little but never thought about being a writer. I wanted to be a Veterinarian and a teacher.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

When the reality hit me that I was traditionally published.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

About 2 years.

Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?

I was a Paralegal for 7 years and am now a student at University of Maryland and a mommy.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?

The Cold hunter, The Forbidden Hunt (still playing with it)

When Jocelyn disobeys orders from her Father’s Council she’s forced to make a choice between family and fate. Is blood thicker than water?

Who is your publisher? Or do you self-publish?

Anchor Group Publishing

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

It only took me 3 months to finish The Chosen. Subsequent books are taking me longer, i think because my writing has developed and matured since I wrote my first book.

What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

I have 4 current works in progress. You can expect book 2 of The Chosen Trilogy this summer. I have another series that I started the first book in (see above) which is the similar genre to The Chosen. My third is His Obssession, an adult suspenseful romance novel, and lastly I am not telling. :) I will give you a hint, you would cross it between Hunger Games, Divergent and The Host.

What genre would you place your book into?

Young Adult Urban Fantasy.

What made you decide to write that genre of book?

The character, the title and her powers came to me first so I ran with it.

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

My favorite is Chloe because of her gift and how much she develops in the second novel.

How long have you been writing?, and who or what inspired you to write?

I have been writing since I learned how to write, however this is the first novel I have written. My push into writing an actual novel was my need to escape reality for a while. I loved reading and getting lost with fictional characters and then I became addicted to creating them and putting them into a world all their own.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?

I like to write in silence, after kids are asleep. Usually I am on my couch with my laptop and my feet propped up onto the table. If I am not there, I am in my bed with my lap top and my dog snoring next to me.

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?

Yes. I love feedback and want to know what readers think.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

It is different with every book I am working on. With The Chosen, it was Title and character then the rest fell into place. With Forbidden Hunt, I am still possibly playing with the title, but came up with the plot first. His Obsession, was plot then title. The other one that I am keeping a secret, the idea came to me in a dream and the title. I got the plot down and the title but it is not set in stone yet. I may not decide till the end.

How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?

I base names on description of character. What I think they should be based on what I picture them to look like. Sometimes I search names on the internet and one will jump out to me. A few characters are named after people I know. Places are based on the plot, do I need a wooded area, beach, swamp, hot/cold, etc.

Are character names and place names decided after their creation? Or do you pick a character/place name and then invent them?

Mostly the character is named after they are created.

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?

Both. I do a lot of it as i go along (ie. do i need this person to be shy or outgoing, strong or weak) With The Chosen, I developed the six main characters first. I may have changed hair color or things like that but personality and super natural abilities were created first.

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books? (Morals as in like Aesops Fables type of "The moral of this story is..")

I wanted to depict Chloe as strong willed and brave when she needed to be. She was the quiet type, not a part of the “in” crowd. Yet there was one shared quality that brought six totally different teenagers together and they became close friends. They had a common goal and worked together to meet that goal and became great friends as a result of it.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

Paperback or hardback. I am old school.

What is your favorite book and Why? Have you read it more than once?

My favorite book is Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. It touches close to home for me. I have only read it once. I can not choose a favorite fantasy novel. I love so many books and authors. I am a fan and inspired by J.K. Rowling, Kathryn Stockett, Suzanne Collins, and Stephanie Meyer. Veronica Roth’s Divergent recently met my list of favorite books.

Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favorite/worst book to movie transfer?

I love books transferred into movies. I actually like it when they change things in the movie as long if it makes it better. My favorite book transferred into a movie was The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks. I also enjoyed The Hunger Games transferred into a movie. I don’t think I have a least favorite … yet, but that is because I am more open than those who expect it to mirror the book.

Your favorite food is?

Chicken and Cheese Enchilladas.

Your favorite singer/group is?

I can’t pick a favorite, I am sorry. I have a love for music similar to my love for books. I like all kinds of music. Some of my favorites include Imagine Dragons, Paramore, Penatonix, and Adele.

Your favorite color is?

Hot pink

Your favorite Author is?

If I have to choose, Nicholas Sparks.

I looked sternly into his eyes.
“Chloe, I love you more than life itself. I will do everything in my power to get your life back to normal, but you have to trust me. I can’t tell you just yet. It is better this way, I promise. I will leave you alone so you can try to gather back some of your normal life again. There is no place for me in your world. I want you to be happy and safe. I promise I will make it better for you from a distance. This will all be over soon, and then you can get on with your normal, teenage life.” He was adamant; I could see that. I didn’t want to let him go, but I couldn’t handle anymore than I already had.
“Why can’t you just tell me what you know? How can you say you love me but want to leave? I want you – all of you. Please don’t do this. We belong together. I know it, and you know it.” I was crying on the outside and screaming on the inside. Why wouldn’t he fight for me?
“You deserve so much more than I can give you right now. Please don’t make this any harder than it already is.” Drake wouldn’t look at me in the eyes anymore.
I knew him well enough to know that meant he didn’t want this. It was hurting him and killing me. I did have feelings for Ethan, but they didn’t compare to the burning flame that was inside of me for Drake.
“Look at me, please. We can make this work; I know we can. When this is all over, we can be together and be a normal couple.” I grabbed his face and pulled it toward me. “Promise me you’ll come back for me. I don’t care what it is you have to go and do, just promise me, Drake. Say you’ll come back.” I couldn’t talk behind the tears anymore. I closed my eyes and prayed through all the tears. He kissed me on my forehead and lifted me up to face him.
“Chloe, if it is at all possible, I will come back for you. You know that. If I don’t, it is because I am not able to.” The look in his eyes when he said that sent chills through me and turned my stomach upside down. I knew what he meant now. He had been trying to tell me all along. If he couldn’t, it’d be because he was not able to. If he was not able to, that means he was not alive. I burst into tears in his arms. “I want you to live a long and happy life without me. I would prefer it to be with me, but you can go on without me. I always told you I would never let you get hurt. I will die for you, if there is no other way. If it means you are safe and protected, than that is what I will do.” His bravery was unbelievable. “Chloe I will destroy Aden. I won’t stop till it is finished.”
“I won’t let you die for me.” I watched his expression change from pure menace to upset and slowly back to the kind, caring Drake I had known.
“It has to be this way. Please just stay here where you are safe. Don’t go out there and do anything that could get you killed. I promise it will be over soon.” He kissed me.
            “I love you,” I whispered.
“I love you more than you could ever know.”
With that kiss, we said good-bye. I memorized his face and burned it into my memory. I felt that would be the last I saw of him. The feeling in my heart told me so, but it wasn’t him that wasn’t coming back; it was I.

OR:

“Are you okay?” A voice asked from across the room.
I jumped, startled, although I knew almost instantly it was him. I sat up on my bed and looked across the room to see Drake standing next to the white and gold drapes that hung delicately across the balcony window. It was dark besides the tiny desk lamp that I had turned on earlier.
I stared for a moment. He had black pants on and a black t-shirt that outlined every muscle in his tight body. I would not have seen him blended in with the darkness had he not said anything. His green eyes were all over me. I felt embarrassed having nothing on but a robe and my soaking wet hair dripping water down my back. I dropped my head down to look at the floor. A tear escaped my eye and fell onto the cherry wood floor. The sobs, came and I buried my face in my hands.
Drake was in front of me on his knees in seconds, consoling me. He wrapped his arms around me and stroked my hair. I couldn’t stop the tears. They just kept coming. I had no idea why. Maybe I was emotionally drained from everything that had happened, or perhaps it was my fear and panic of this death that seems to await me in my dreams and Olivia’s visions. I am not one to cry in front of anyone, but Drake held me comfortably in his arms. I let my hysterics out and managed to pull myself together after a few minutes. He still had me in his strong arms, rubbing my hair, not saying anything.
He understood it was something that had to be done, and I would finish it. That was one of the reasons I was falling in love with him. Besides being so understanding, we could have a full conversation with each other without any words. He could look at me and know, and I could look at him and know. He knew I needed to do this, and that this cry was long over due, and that all he was supposed to do was hold me. No advice; no talking. Just be there.
Finally, I looked up at him. He kissed me on my forehead and placed his hands around my face wiping the tears away without saying anything at all. He kissed my lips hard and passionately. It was a long awaited kiss and the release of a day’s worth of anticipation.
“Chloe, I … ” I put my finger up to his mouth to quiet him. I didn’t want to hear anything but the sound of our breathing. He kissed me again, sitting down on the bed next to me. I climbed up onto his lap and wrapped my arms around his neck. I took control and kissed him hard, gripping his hair in my hands and running my fingers through it. I couldn’t get enough of him or close enough to him. I was never satisfied when I was with him. I wanted every single part of him.
He gave in grabbing my waist and legs while still kissing me. We never took our eyes off of each other. He stood up and carried me around to the side of the bed, and laid me down. He pulled his shirt off and my jaw dropped at how magnificent his naked body looked. I never imagined being so stunned by his beauty. It drove me wild. He climbed on top of me, his hand sliding up and down my leg while he placed kisses all over my neck. The tension was unbearable. He slipped his hand underneath my robe sliding it slowly off my shoulders as he kissed them. My hands were all over his back, nails slightly digging in out of frustration and eagerness from wanting him so badly. I gave up fighting the urge to move slowly like a good girl and unclasped his belt, and slid his pants off with my feet. He smiled underneath our kiss. He untied my rob, removing the little bit of fabric left covering me, and slid it off, sending chills through me. It joined his pile of clothes on the floor. He stopped and stared into my eyes. My heart was beating erratically.
“I don’t want to lose you,” he whispered.
“Then don’t,” I replied kissing him.

Excerpt

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

My office, like most modern offices, cranked the air conditioning down to Arctic proportions during the summer months. Consequently, we workers arrived in the morning dressed in sandals and sleeveless tops, donned heavy sweaters upon reaching our desks, and ended up shivering by noon. Ironically, when our workday ended we were hit by a wall of oppressive heat the moment we stepped outside the main doors. No, this wasn’t a flawed system in the slightest.

That day, I wasn’t having it. I had the grand idea of spending my lunch hour outside, away from the icy wind stiffening my fingers and chilling my neck. After I unwound myself from the afghan I kept in my desk (and only used in the summer months), I gathered up my lunch and my phone and headed out for an impromptu picnic in my car.

What I hadn’t considered was that the office runs the air conditioning so cold because it was, well, hot outside. Very hot, in fact. So hot that the cheese was melting in my sandwich and the lettuce looked like something that had washed ashore months, maybe even years, ago. I was parked in the shade and had taken down my car’s convertible top, but I still couldn’t manage to get comfortable. I’d already shed my sandals and cardigan, which left me wearing my sundress and…

Dare I?

I glanced around the parking lot of Real Estate Evaluation Services, the ‘go-to firm for all your commercial real estate needs’, according to the brochures. No one, human or drone, was taking a noontime stroll, and, by virtue of my being on the far side of the lot, no cars were near mine. Most of my coworkers didn’t even have cars, so the lot was rarely more than half-full. What was more, from where I sat, I couldn’t even see the office.

I dared.

I took a deep breath and channeled my inner wild woman, then leaned the seat back and slipped off my panties. Removing that small bit of cotton made an incredible difference, and the heat became somewhat bearable. Enjoyable, even. Was that a breeze?

Ignoring my decrepit sandwich, I fully reclined the seat, set the alarm on my phone, and closed my eyes. A nap. Now that would make today bearable.

Suddenly, he is there.

Here.

Kissing me, holding me.

I know I’m dreaming, because he’s perfect. His lips are soft but insistent, his hands gentle. I glide my fingers across his back, feeling thick cords of muscle, before sinking my fingers into his hair. It’s superfine, like cobwebs, and when I crack an eyelid, I learn that it’s silver. Not gray or white, but the elegant hue of antique candlesticks and fine flatware. Cool.

I squeeze my eyes shut again, not wanting the dream to end any sooner than it has to. He kisses me once more, and I can’t help melting against him. His hand travels up my leg, up past my hip… shit! No panties!

I try twisting away, but he already knows. I feel his mouth stretch into a smile, and he moves to nuzzle my neck. “What’s your name?” he murmurs.

“Sara,” I reply. “Yours?”

“Micah.” By now, his hands have traveled to my waist, and he slides one around to stroke the small of my back. “Why did you summon me, Sara?”

“I didn’t,” I protest. “I don’t know how.” I would say more, but he nibbles a trail from my neck to my shoulder, and pushes my dress to the side. As for me, I let him .

Micah raises his head, and I get a good look at him for the first time. His eyes are large and dark gray, like thunderheads, his features chiseled into warm caramel skin, and his unruly mop of silver hair seems to float around his head. He wears an odd, buff-colored leather shirt, made all the odder in this heat, and matching leather pants and boots. Boots?

“You did summon me,” he insists. “My Sara, you must tell me why.”

“Does it matter?” I ask. I pull him back to me, kissing him with all the passion I’ve never felt with anyone during my waking hours. Micah kisses me back, fingers deftly unbuttoning my dress while his other hand rubs my lower back. I’ve never felt so free, so alive as I do in Micah’s embrace, and I have no intention of rushing this. None at all.

My phone screamed for attention, thus ending the best dream that had ever been dreamed. Ever. I fumbled to silence it, then shook myself back to reality. I still felt warm and glowy from the dream, almost after-glowy. It wasn’t until I stretched and got tangled in my clothing that I noticed anything was amiss.

The straps of my dress had slid down around my elbows, and the dress itself was unbuttoned to my waist. What’s more, my bra was all askew and a nipple was dangerously close to freedom. I shot a quick glance around the parking lot as I fixed my clothing; luckily, there was no one around, either of the human or robotic drone persuasion. I hoped no one had gotten an eyeful of how I was apparently fondling myself in my sleep.

Some dream. Soon enough, I got the top half of my dress squared away and reached into the passenger seat, only to come up empty. My panties were gone.

Great. Either one of my coworkers had found me sleeping and stolen them, or a randy squirrel had absconded with my delicates. Hoping for the latter, I stuffed my feet back into my sandals and returned to the office and my ever-growing mountain of paperwork.

Speaking of the mountain there was a fresh sheaf of reports on my desk, ready for sorting. My title, if it can be called that, is Quarterly Report Collator.

This impressive moniker means that I have the ability—no, make that the responsibility—to place various documents and reports in their proper order, usually alphabetically. I’ve even been known to utilize ascending numbers when the occasion warrants, a feat those who get paid far more than I do cannot seem to manage. As long as they keep paying me, I’m fine with my place on the food chain, low though it may be. It sure beats the alternative--a luxurious but caged life as a sellout government shill, performing spells on command as if they were parlor tricks. My family may have lost much, but we still have some pride left.

I dove right into the heap of reports, for once appreciating the mindless work since it gave me the mental space to dwell on my dream lover. Why would a man in my dream claim that I’d summoned him? And what was with his getup? Micah had looked like he should be playing the part of a swashbuckling hero in a trashy romance novel, not hanging around in the parking lot of a midsized corporation specializing in commercial real estate acquisitions and liquidations.

And his name: Micah. I was certain that I’d never heard it before, which puzzled me. If I were going to create a dream lover, wouldn’t I give him a regular name like Tom or Joe? A name I was at least familiar with?

I swiveled in my chair and called up my search engine. We are not, under any circumstances, supposed to use this bit of technology that is standard issue with each and every one of our ergonomically correct workstations. I’m not quite sure what the punishment for internet usage is, but I’ve always imagined ninjas dropping out of the ceiling and hauling me off to their lair. After enduring a mild torture session, I’m given a cup of hot sake and sent on my way.

I could have waited until I got home. I had a nicer computer and better, faster internet access than the office does, but I couldn’t wait. Not while the image of Micah’s thundercloud eyes still burned in my memory, inciting not-safe-for-work thoughts.

I typed in Micah: define, and the results page immediately listed a bunch of Biblical references. Mmm, not exactly helpful. I clicked around for a while until I found one of those sites that specialized in the meaning of names. It read thusly:

Micah ( mī ' kə ) he who resembles God.

Huh. My dream man was certainly attractive, but I didn’t know if I’d go so far as to call him a god. Then I remembered that there was a type of stone called mica, which also seemed like an unlikely source for me to pull a name from. In the midst of typing mica: stone, I was interrupted.

“Hey, beautiful.”

I glanced up and saw Floyd, the office sleaze, hovering at the edge of my cubicle. Better and better. I clicked off the browser and nonchalantly swiveled away from the keyboard. To throw the ninjas off my trail, of course. “You and Juliana heading over to The Room tonight?” he asked.

The Room is a local hangout, stocked with stale beer and watered-down liquor, not to mention a floor that has never, ever been mopped. Not. Even. Once. But it’s cheap and close to the office, so we all go. Since I started working at REES, I’ve been a regular. “We haven’t discussed it.”

“Everyone’s going,” Floyd pressed. “C’mon, I’ll buy you a drink. You like gin and tonic, right?”

I heaved the stack of reports from my lap to my desk and uncrossed my legs, squarely planting my feet in order to deliver the Keep Away From Me speech to Floyd yet again, when I remembered my lack of undergarments. Quickly, I snatched my afghan from where I’d tossed it before lunch and spread it across my lower body like a shield.

“Whatever,” I mumbled, which Floyd counted as a victory.

“See you there,” he drawled. I hate him.

I spent the rest of my shift with my thighs clamped together, having mild anxiety attacks whenever I stood. Or sat. Or reached for anything. Needless to say, by the end of the day I was more than ready for something eye-wateringly alcoholic. Juliana, my best friend and REES’s office manager, was game, as she usually was, and we made it to The Room in time for happy hour. Normally, I feel like I’m in her shadow, what with her long, dark hair, matching eyes, and the body of a pre-war pinup girl, but tonight I didn’t care. Right about now, a little overshadowing was just what the doctor ordered.

After a few bowls of pretzels, and more than a few cocktails, I confessed my al fresco state, to which Juliana and I clinked glasses and downed a few shots in honor of my missing panties. Floyd, the scum, welshed on his promise of gin and tonic. I really do hate him.

Book Description:

“They say I’m half demon, but I like to think of myself as half human, especially as the demons want me dead.”

Charlie Henderson is living a lie. Her real name is Muse and her attempt at a normal life is about to go up in smoke.

When a half-demon assassin walks into her life, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake, Muse must return to the one man she hoped never to see again and ask for help. The Prince of Greed isn’t known for his charity. The price is high, but the cost could tear her apart.

Trapped between the malevolent intentions of a Prince of Hell, an assassin with ulterior motives, and all of demon-kind, Muse must embrace the lure of chaos at her core; the demon inside her, in order to survive.

When your ex is the Prince of Greed, you'd better be ready to raise hell.

Excerpt

I should have known he’d be trouble as soon as he walked into my workshop, but I couldn’t have known he’d be the death of me. He wore a three-quarter length red leather coat, had platinum blond hair long enough to sweep back out of his eyes, and sported scuffed Timberland boots, but if the goose bumps shivering across my skin were anything to go by, he clearly was not as human as his appearance had me believe.

At first, I tried to ignore him, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me hesitate. A quick glance at my dusty clock told me it was late, past midnight, and I’d be damned if I was going to drop everything just because he’d invited himself in. I continued to work on the sword resting on the anvil before me. I hammered out imperfections in the blade’s surface with renewed vigor, metal singing at each blow. Behind me, the coal forge roared. Rolling waves of heat branded my back. I told myself it was sweltering temperatures sprinkling perspiration across my face and back, making my scruffy tank top cling to me, but in truth, it was fear.

Picking up the unfinished sword with gloved hands, I turned and plunged the blade into the glowing coals before facing my uninvited guest. He’d given himself the tour of my cramped workshop, seeming to admire the various swords on display, some unfinished, some as close to art as I was ever going to get. Shame I couldn’t wield them as well as I could craft them.

“Well?” I managed to instil some genuine irritation in my words in the hope it would disguise the anxiety building inside me. I tried to flick my hair out of my face but a few strands stubbornly clung to my sweaty cheek.

“Impressive.” He nodded once and turned arctic-blue eyes on me before flashing what he probably thought was a knee-weakening smile.

If my guest expected me to gush and swoon, he was in for a shock. “Who are you, and what the hell do you want?” It was late. I was tired. He wasn’t human. I figured I was within my rights to be blunt.

His expression tightened. “You’re Muse, right?” He tossed a gesture at the stuffy workshop. “I was expecting something…else.”

I hadn’t heard that nickname in years. Muse was a tag left over from dark days I didn’t wish to revisit.

Approaching me, he reached inside his coat. I caught a flicker of light slide over a handgun tucked into his waistband and tensed. An unusual motif, like entwined scorpions, adorned the grip. But he didn’t reach for the gun. He withdrew a sword and rested it on my anvil. “I want you to read this.”

I tugged off my glove and skipped my fingers over the smooth surface of the blade. The metal burned cold against my insolent touch, as though the sword resented my presence. It was a wonderful piece of workmanship. The ripple - or hamon - below the surface of the carbon-steel blade hinted at Japanese origins, and the tempered edge was sharp enough to slice through flesh with little effort. An intricate hand-forged guard and leather-wrapped hilt betrayed the sword as functional but with a flair for the dramatic, and yet it was clearly a weapon meant for combat, not ceremony.

A thin snap of power danced up my fingers, and with a small hiss, I snatched my hand back. This sword would not easily give up its secrets. “What’s in it for me?”

“What do you want?”

Now there was a loaded question. I didn’t know what or who he was, and had no idea how much he could afford or what the stakes involved. “It depends on what I’m going to find. If we’re talking murder, then I want danger money. If it’s just a lovers’ tiff you’re interested in, a few hundred should do it. I’m assuming you want recent information. If you need me to go back more than five years, it’ll be another two hundred.”

“Or I could walk out of here now and tell the world where you are. I know there are a few unsavoury characters from your checkered past who’d be very grateful for the heads-up on your whereabouts.” His smooth voice and slight smile belied the threat in his words.

I smiled tightly, my first smile since his arrival. “Now, there, you see? We were having a civilized conversation, and you just had to go and spoil it by threatening me.”

“Why don’t you just read the blade, and I can leave you to get on with your–” he cast a glance about him, “–work?”

And now he’d insulted me. “I’m not telling you anything until you give me more to go on.” Who did he think he was talking to? Some back alley half-human woman who would fall over her own feet to do his bidding? He might know my name, but he obviously didn’t know me.

He blinked, before turning back on the charm, as if I could be bought by a handsome face. “You’re right. I’m sorry. A few hundred, was it?” He dug deep into his coat pocket and pulled out a wad of cash. Without counting it, he tossed it onto the anvil. “That should cover it.”

I tugged my glove back on, pinching the heatproof fabric between each finger. “I think you should leave.”

He narrowed his eyes. “Just read the sword, Muse.”

I didn’t have time to humor assholes, especially those of the demon persuasion. “Get out.”

He pulled his distinctive gun on me, finger resting firmly on the trigger, aim rigid. “You will do this for me.” It wasn’t an order. It was fact–at least as far as he was concerned.

“Go back to hell,” I sneered, before reaching around and snatching the blade from the forge, flinging both the half-finished sword and some hot coals at him. He recoiled, cursing as the embers bounced off his coat. I dashed for the doors. My hand was on the handle, when he slammed into me, knocking the breath from my lungs.

He thrust the gun under my chin, freezing me rigid. “Why do you have to be so difficult?”

I really didn’t want this to escalate. Bad shit happens when she comes out to play. The darkness slumbering at my core began to unfurl, opening like the petals of a flower, but its intent was far from delicate. The trickling touch of power spilled into my muscles. Heat flooded through my body. The warmth of my element embraced me, threading itself through every part of me, the lure of chaos undeniable.

He abruptly released me and took a few steps back, gun up. His narrow glare measured me.

I pressed my back against the workshop door. Power dripped from my fingertips. I couldn’t see it—the human part of me was blind to the energy—but he could. His arctic eyes blazed with a promise of conflict.

He appeared to consider his next move and then, quite unexpectedly, laughed and lowered the gun, tucking it back into the holster inside his coat. “You’re right. This isn’t worth it.” With his hands up, as if in surrender, he turned and retrieved the sword in question before weaving his way back around workbenches toward me.

“I’ll leave you in peace.”

“What?” His sudden change in mood completely disarmed me.

“Step aside. I’m leaving.”

Surprised by his abrupt surrender, I did as he asked and watched him slide the door open and step out into the night. A sharp winter breeze invaded the heat of my workshop, rousing me from my muddled stupor. Confused and somewhat disappointed, I followed him out into the alley. The raw energy he’d aroused began to fizzle out. Its departure left me with a sickly chill and bitter sense of loss.

He climbed into the driver’s side of an old Dodge Charger with rust-bruised red paint. I had no idea who he was, where he’d come from, how he’d found me, or what lay hidden in that damn sword. And he was leaving. That couldn’t be right. Didn’t I deserve some sort of explanation?

“Hey!” I ventured further into the street.

Headlights bathed me in twin beams, forcing me to shield my eyes. He gunned the engine, jammed the box into reverse, and swung the car backward into a J-turn before speeding off, fat tires squealing on wet asphalt.

I stood in the street, hand on hip, head tilted to one side and breathed the crisp night air, clearing my lungs of forge-dust. Then the shockwave hit me. The explosion lashed across my back. I must have briefly lost consciousness, but the furious pain in my back quickly summoned me from the depths. A whine drilled into my skull. Alarms sounded from the industrial units around me.

I turned my head toward the heat, grit digging into my cheek as I peered into the smoke bellowing from the hollow gap between two buildings.

My workshop had gone and with it, my attempt at a normal life.

Author Interview with Author Ruthie Henrick

tourbanner

Today on the blog we have author Ruthie Henrick here for an interview. Ruthie is the author of Twice in a Lifetime, one of today’s book blasts. We would like to thank Ruthie for stopping by and sharing with us.

About Ruthie -

clip_image002Hi there! I'm Ruthie Henrick, and I’m an Arizona girl. I write romantic women’s fiction and contemporary romance.

I’ve always been an avid reader, even as a child. I’ll read just about anything, but I love anything with romance in it. I am a romance junkie.

I first started writing a couple of years ago. I’ve never been that person who dreamed about being an author or loved telling stories. I used to try making up bedtime stories when my kids were little and I’d draw a blank every time. But an idea had been running through my mind for a while so I decided to start typing and see where it led. Three months later I had a really good first draft. Let me tell you, nobody was more surprised than me!

I love music, especially country music, and that’s generally the soundtrack to whatever I have going on. At work, doing housework, in the car—the music is always on. Except when I write—that I have to do in silence.

We have three sons and they’re all grown and scattered around the country, but the Big Kahuna and I are still ruled by a fifteen-year-old deaf Pekinese with OCD. Life is interesting!

I’m not much of a TV watcher, except for shows like The Voice and American Idol. Gives me lots of time to write, and read. Like many of you, I have a one-click compulsion. The number of unread books on my Kindle is really embarrassing.

I love chatting with other readers, sharing my favorite books and authors, and discovering those new to me. Come by and hang out with me on any of my social media.

Author Interview

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

I never aspired to write. I’ve always been an office manager and a bookkeeper. I generally enjoyed the offices I worked in and am good at what I do, but my poor husband has had to listen to me complain (yes, we should probably call it whine) forever that I felt there was something else I should be doing. Something creative that would satisfy my soul. Well, as I was writing my novel and loving every minute of it, I realized…THIS WAS IT!

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

I probably didn’t consider myself a writer until after I’d completed the manuscript for Twice in a Lifetime. It was the first novel I’ve attempted—the process of writing was still very new and surprising to me. And honestly, I felt that wherever this story was coming from, it could just disappear and go back there without warning.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

It took me about fourteen months from the time I finished my first draft until I hit publish.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?

Twice in a Lifetime. Is it possible to find your one true love…twice?

Who is your publisher? Or do you self-publish?

I am self-published

What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

Right now I’m working on several different projects, but I love writing contemporary romance. The book I hope to release next is a small town contemporary romance that’s full of quirky characters and witty dialogue. I also have another contemporary romance about a couple struggling to get the spark back in their marriage and basic outlines for three more books in the Love Found series. I need to become a faster writer!

What made you decide to write that genre of book?

I guess I write what I like to read!

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

I love all the characters in Twice in a Lifetime, even the self-absorbed bitch, but I have a soft spot for Jake. He’s such a guy’s guy, yet he knows how to make a woman feel special.

Who or what inspired you to write?

I honestly don’t know what inspired me to write Twice in a Lifetime. Actually, I call it the book I wrote on accident. I’ve never been that person who dreamed about being an author or loved telling stories. I used to try making up bedtime stories when my kids were little and I’d draw a blank every time. So when these characters came to me with their story and then started waking me up in the middle of the night with their chattering mostly I just wanted them to go away, haha! I decided maybe if I started writing down their story they’d be happy and leave me alone. Let me tell you, nobody was more surprised than me when they didn’t shut up for two whole months and I ended up with an entire novel!

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?

There’s a lot of controversy about whether an author should read her reviews or not, but I do read them all. I appreciate the time readers take to let me know what she did or didn’t like about my book.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

::Chuckles:: I think this book had three previous titles before I finally came up with Twice in a Lifetime. But once that title popped into my head I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before because it’s perfect.

How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?

It’s funny, but my characters all seem to come to me fully formed with names, faces and voices. Places not so much. Generally I just try to come up with something that fits the situation, then Google it to make sure it doesn’t already exist. Sparky’s (the pub where the blind date occurs in Twice in a Lifetime) was fairly easy because that’s the mascot’s name for the local university. In the small town contemporary I’m working on right now I needed a name for the town. The setting is in Tennessee—I went through about thirty possible names and was nearly ready to move my fictional town to Georgia when I finally came up with something I liked that wasn’t already the name of a real town.

Are character names and place names decided after their creation?

Or do you pick a character/place name and then invent them? Either way. Sometimes I know I need a certain character or place and then decide on the details. Sometimes they just invite themselves into the book and then I need to decide what to do with them.

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?

I’m a true pantser once I start writing. All the details are decided on the fly.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

I love them all! eBooks are easy because I can take them anywhere in my phone. I still prefer paperbacks to read outside, and I have certain authors that I only buy in hardback—true keepers.

Your favorite singer/group is?

I am a huge country music fan, and Chris Young is my music boyfriend!

Your favorite color is?

Blue

Your favorite Author is?

My favorite author of all time is LaVeryle Spencer. I started reading her contemporary and historical romances years ago and love her characters and story lines.

Remember to check out the book blast below to find out more about this amazing author and her book, and don’t forget to enter the rafflecopter.

His hands forged a path down her rib cage, her abdomen tightening with a quick intake of breath as his thumbs grazed the sides of lace-covered breasts. The mewl of satisfaction that escaped on her gasp had his erection throbbing. His breaths came in harsh gasps. He dropped to his knees. His work-roughened palms rasped against the satiny skin of her hips as he tugged open the snap of her jeans and lowered the zipper. “Jesus, Allie, did you paint these on? Help me out here.” With a laugh she wriggled until he had the curve-hugging denim down and off.
Lust threatened to consume him as he uncovered her silky limbs and left her standing in nothing but mind-altering scraps of pink silk. She palmed his head, her fingers tickling through his hair and across his scalp as his hands explored the firmness of her toned runner’s thighs, roamed her trim hips and kneaded the lush globes of her ass. Jesus, she was…perfect. Better than anything good and soft he could ever imagine. He dragged open– mouth kisses over the front of her panties and was rewarded when she drew in a ragged shudder. His heart raced in his chest.
More. He needed more and he needed it now. Needed to bury himself –. Ah, fuck! Abruptly, he tightened his arms around her thighs and dropped his forehead to her belly. “Shit.”
Her hands held him close. “Not the reaction I was looking for, Jake.”

CHAPTER ONE (first half) The night was cool and thick as it sheathed me in total darkness. The satin shorts and camisole that I’d gone to bed in were now damp from the moisture hanging heavily in the air. Holding my hands in front of my body, I blindly wandered around in blackness as I tried to find some kind of clue that would give me a better picture. My bare feet told me that I was standing on soft ground, the tall grass tickling my calves as I moved. It was possible that I was in a large pasture, though the clean, crisp scent of the air let me know that no large animals were near.
Thunder cracked in the distance and the ominous, coal-black clouds had even chased the moon and stars into hiding, not even the faintest glow giving away their location. It took a moment, but my mind was finally beginning to recognize this place. This was a dream world, one that I’d seen before. With every passing night, with every passing dream, I was able to travel further and further into this illusion as I tried to discover its meaning. I’d had recurring dreams before, but there was something different, disturbing about this one that seemed to speak to me. There was something that I was supposed to learn here and I needed to find it.
The wind began to pick up and I looked to the north, the same direction that I looked to every night. Lightning cascaded across the sky, illuminating the massive, empty pasture in which I stood. The momentary flash brought something to my attention that I’d never seen in the dream before. Two figures stood off in the distance, several yards between them, facing off. Even with great distance between us, I could feel the tension rolling off of them. That must be the dark, heavy feeling in the air that I’d felt: anger, hatred.
Thunder rolled again as the lightning danced across the sky. Using the display to light my path, I ran toward the figures ahead of me. As I approached, a bolt of raw, electric energy reached down from the sky and ignited the immediate area in flames. The swift turn of events stopped me short, nearly throwing me to the ground. The flames spread into a perfect circle as it surrounded both figures, blocking any further approach by me. Sharp chills cut through me from head to toe as I realized that one of them was fully controlling the blaze.
Now that I was closer, I could tell that the figures were women. One woman, maybe an inch or two over five feet tall, stood around fifty feet away, and to my right. Her long, jet-black hair reached just below her hips and whipped around in the increasing wind. As I studied her, I began to see a deep-red, transparent cloud, like an aura surrounding her. She was strong, very strong, and I could feel her overwhelming power from here.
Looking to my left, her opponent was roughly the same height; only her hair was frosty white and hung to her knees. This woman was much different. She was surrounded by an aura cloud as well, though hers was dark blue. Something about her called to me and it took everything I had not to trudge barefooted through the flames to reach her.
Rain began to fall and quickly soaked everything around us, though it was still unable to extinguish the fire. Movement brought me to attention as the white haired woman lifted her arms. The earth began to quake beneath me as it broke free all around her. She looked like a dancer as she maneuvered her body, forcing the element into submission under her power. The packed earth sailed through the air towards the dark haired woman, but she was quick to react.
In a flash, she completely disappeared from my sight, managing to dodge the attack. My eyes moved quickly as I focused to find her. My body locked up as my vision was suddenly clouded with the mysterious dark haired woman as she appeared before me, seemingly out of nowhere. Her dark, emerald green eyes and dilated coal-black pupils stared into mine, glinting in the firelight. Her raven hair seemed alive as it brushed my skin and sent tingles running through my body. Her flawless, olive-toned skin nearly glowed as she stood there, concern in her expression.
“Kailah.” As her soft, sweet voice spoke my name, I inhaled sharply. Though her mouth barely moved as she spoke my name, her perfect, white teeth showed just enough for me to make out four tiny, yet still elongated, razor sharp fangs. My heart fluttered rapidly as I wondered if this woman was the creature that she appeared to be, and if so, how did she know me and what did she want with me?
“Y-yes?” I stammered.
“This is not a dream, Kailah. It’s a warning.” She leaned in closer. “Run,” she whispered.
“Wait, what?” I asked, chills once again stabbing me like thousands of needles running from the roots of my hair to the bare, wet soles of my feet.
Run!”
As soon as I turned to run, the dark thunder cracked overhead and the lightning began touching the ground all around me, trying to hold me where I stood. I heard a loud growl sound out from behind me, but decided not to look back. The earth began to shake again and my bare feet slid on the wet grass, the soft ground cushioning me as I fell hard on my right hip.
“Hello Kailah.” The new voice sent a shiver down my spine as I looked into the icy blue eyes of the white-haired woman.
Though her hair would have suggested otherwise, she looked no older than me: around twenty. Her skin was also olive toned and absolutely flawless, just like the other woman. Though, normally, one would look to the light as salvation and the darkness as hell, I didn’t think that was the case in this situation. Her crystalline blue eyes had death in them and I found myself backing away from her, toward the raven-haired beauty.
She laughed and the sound enveloped me like frigid water. “Kailah, you would choose the Vampire over your own grandmother?”
Before I could digest the words that she had unleashed on me, her attention shifted and the blue aura cloud surrounding her exploded into a barrier. Instinctively, my eyes closed and I threw my hand out as a large throwing knife bounced off the cloudy shield and headed for me.
“It is you!” she said with wonder.
My eyes snapped open and surrounding my hand was the same blue energy that surrounded the white-haired woman, only mine had a throwing knife buried in it. I couldn’t stop the scream that bubbled up out of my throat as the energy dissipated and the knife fell in my lap. What the hell was going on?
Her attention shifted again and with soft, graceful movements, a lightning bolt responded as it split from the sky and reached for her outstretched hand. She caught the energy easily before throwing it at her opponent. Another loud growl sounded out only a moment before something slammed hard into the barrier. That something, I realized, was the woman she had referred to as the Vampire.
Dark red energy swelled around the supposed Vampire as she pushed against the barrier of the opposing woman. “Kailah! She can find you in your dreams! Go, now!” As soon as the order left the raven-haired beauty’s lips, energy exploded from her body as the white-haired woman was thrown several feet away. “This dream is a figment of your own mind but, make no mistake, this is a premonition. You are the key to ending this war and if she finds you, it will doom all humans to a fate worse than death. Leave this realm now and prepare your mind. Your life is about to change.”

Excerpt

I head over to the library to kill some time before my next class. It’s quiet and peaceful in there, and I always feel a wave of calmness when walking through those doors. I think it may have something to do with all these words that have come together, creating stories, written by all these amazing authors who now surround me. I love books. Something about seeing through someone else’s eyes and living a mere moment in someone else’s life soothes me.

I take a seat at the table in the back, take out Christopher Pike’s Blood Thirst from my book bag, and dive into the book. The main character, Sita, is so empowering, bold, and immortal, yet carefree and fragile all at once.

The thought of living a thousand years is so intriguing but ultimately depressing, having to outlive everyone and anyone who enters your life. Still, it makes me wonder, what would I give to have all eternity in my hands?

As I contemplate this, I hear a chair skid across the carpet in front of me. I slowly bring my book down, low enough to peek over.

I furrow my brows. “Can I help you?” I ask the boy sitting at the table across from me, feeling a bit perplexed and apprehensive. A smirk spreads across his face as his smoky golden eyes bore into mine.

“No, just taking in the view,” the boy answers back with swagger.

Is this kid crazy or something? I know he can’t possibly be talking about me, and the library isn’t much to look at either.

I glance behind me. “The view, huh? Kinda hard to believe, since we’re sitting in a library,” I comment sarcastically.

“Very true. But I wasn’t talking about the scenery; I was more or less talking about you,” he replies. “My name is Brent,” he says while extending his hand for me to shake. Immediately, I feel the thump-thump, thump-thump of my heart pumping with great intensity. An ice-cold shiver rushes down my arms and throughout my body, and I can’t help but stare at his soft, pristinely manicured hand, as though touching it would be the death of me. An end to all means. But most of all, I’m afraid of the burning scar his touch might leave on me.

I continue to stare at him, not sure where this is going. He eventually drops his hand. I’m kind of wondering if maybe this is a joke, like he was put up to this or something. Maybe I’m being punked and everyone is hiding behind the bookcases, waiting for him to make a fool out of me.

But Brent just continues to gawk at me with this indescribable charisma. I feel as though he’s drawing me in with the golden blaze of his eyes but making me question his intentions with a devilish grin.

“Ahem.” Brent clears his throat, looking amused, and leans his head to the side, waving his hand to get my attention.

“Oh, sorry. I’m Raina,” I finally reply after leaving my trance.

“Hi, Raina. It’s nice to finally meet you,” he says, as though he’s been waiting for this moment his entire life.

“Finally?” I question, feeling the blood rush to my cheeks. “You say that as though we should already know each other.”

I watch as he adjusts his shoulders and reassesses himself before responding. “I saw you in the hallway this morning and then again in the cafeteria. I just felt like you were someone I wanted to meet,” he confesses. “The cafeteria felt a little crowded, with all eyes on me, so I left to get some air,” Brent finishes, shrugging his shoulders.

“And you followed me here?”

I can’t believe that just came out of my mouth. Of course he’s not stalking me! Why would anyone want to do that?

“I wasn’t stalking you, if that’s what you’re thinking. When I passed by, I saw you sitting alone. I felt like this was my chance to introduce myself without any watchers lurking,” he admits with a kind of sincerity. At least, I think he’s being sincere.

Before I can even respond, the bell rings. I stand up and quickly gather my book off the table to place in my book bag. I push in my chair and smile at him as he begins to stand up. I turn to walk away, not knowing what else to say to him.

An intense warmth stings my hand, goose bumps rage through my skin as my hair rises from my body. I pause slowly, turn around, and look down. Brent’s hand is now touching mine.

“Raina, when can I see you again?”

The energy from his hand is climbing through my every limb, awakening the parts of me that lay dormant for so long.

“Why would you want to see me again?” I question, a little dumbfounded, taking my hand back.

He steps closer. “Because I like you.” Straight to the point.

I turn slowly around, not sure how to answer this, and I can feel the heat off his body as he walks beside me. I stop when we get to the glass doors. “Listen, you seem nice and all, but I have a boyfriend,” I say, leaving him speechless. I’m completely shocked that this lie just came rolling off my tongue so easily. I hate lying, but I hate being let down even more so, and I’m sure that’s just what he would do eventually.

She’s an avid reader of genre fiction, she writes contemporary and paranormal romance, and she listens to an eclectic mix of music that spans from pop/rock to country to gospel. She loves a good story whether it’s an erotic short, a full-length romance novel, or the narrative slice-of-life found in country music. In any story, emotional integrity and authenticity are most important to her as well as a big dose of romping hot sexual tension. She enjoys smart-mouthed, sexy heroines, hunky alpha heroes who know how to take care of their women, and plot twists that surprise her, but most of all, she just wants to experience a satisfying emotional arc of a character falling in love and finding what he or she needs most in life.

Mac is a small-town country girl with a world-traveler’s soul. She grew up in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and she’s lived in Dublin, Ireland, in Long Island for a summer, and now resides in the Washington, D.C. area.
