Title: RAKER
Category and Genre: New Adult, Suspense Thriller
Word Count: 80,000

QUERY:
Jessamine Rhodes, a visually impaired university student, must identify and subdue an elusive killer or risk becoming the next victim. However, the cost may be her love for JD, the reclusive disc jockey with a violent past.

Marvell Lake, a summer resort and university town that appeals to an upscale clientele with an active nightlife scene, is plagued by a series of homicides. The vicious killer utilizes a modified garden tool as a weapon to dispatch victims in a graphic method unique to the motives of the perpetrator.

Jessamine, a strong, independent, young dancer may be the only one capable of ending the bloodshed. Laced with insight into dance techniques and a strict, unwritten code of etiquette, a gathering of young dance contestants compete for the ultimate dance trophy while shadowed by a vengeful killer.

FIRST 250 WORDS:

10:30 A.M. September 27. Marvell Lake, New York

Jessamine discreetly removed the forest green, satin sheet which covered her legs. She placed the soles of her bare feet on the cool, hardwood floor and rose to a standing position. The woman’s latest romantic encounter, Kurt Degen, stirred beneath the sheets and reluctantly opened his eyes.

“What time is it?” he murmured.

Jessamine did not turn to face her companion. “It’s morning...”

Dressed only in crimson red, Chantilly lace, baby-doll lingerie, Jessamine stretched her arms and casually walked across the floor in the direction of the bedroom window. She pulled both panels of the forest green, room darkening drapes aside along the curtain rod and raised the window sash. The young woman gazed out of the open, second floor window at the street below.

“Kurt, again, thank you for seeing me home last night.”

He smiled as he observed how the physique of the young woman partially obstructed the brilliant sunshine which entered the bedroom.

“You showed your gratitude yesterday evening…and once again this morning,” he stated casually.

Jessamine arched her back and closed her eyes as an early autumn breeze entered through the open window and penetrated the small bedroom. She raised her pale, slender arms above her head and exposed her petite frame to the warm air. The gentle zephyrs penetrated the bedroom and gradually dispersed the distinctive aroma of stale liquor and sex.

“As pleasurable as it was…it’s time for you to go,” she informed him.

Title:
Across Jaspen Bay
Age and Genre: NA Low Fantasy
Word Count: 119,000

Query:
Josephine may be small in stature but it’s her temper that’s really short.  No one can set her off like her younger, irresponsible brothers. She spends more time than she’d care to admit trying to keep them out of danger.  Edward is in line to the throne for goodness sakes!  They should not be in tavern brawls or sailing around with pirates.  After another all-night out, Sephine is ready to kill them.  On her way into town, she’s stopped by her younger sister’s tutor; he can’t find Vivie.

She’d never expected Vivie to be in any trouble, she was the ‘perfect little princess’.  But Edward is sure the Duke of Elmbank is responsible for her disappearance.  His newly betrothed wife-to-be, told him she was suspicious of her uncle and fears Fandora’s recent misfortune may also be connected.  But she has no proof.  They can’t toss around accusations at their closest ally, especially when Edward promised to investigate the Duke in secret.  Instead, they follow the whispers and clues to the southern shores of Jaspen Bay.

There Edward and Sephine find the Duke has assembled an enormous fleet of ships.  He’s got revenge in his grasp.  His first target is the King of Fandora; his own brother.  Next, he’ll go after Valedonia and the sibling’s home.  If he fulfills his own desire, his son will be rewarded by a greater power… or so he thinks.  Now the young royals must try to find Vivie and stop the impending attack.

First 250 Words:
~GABE~

Edward and Gabe had played cards all night.  That in itself was not out of the ordinary, but Gabe was bored.  When he was bored, he became restless.  And being restless was never good while sitting at a card table.  He’d humored the men longer than he expected; it was time to have some fun.

Dawn’s grey light crept through the taverns perfectly polished windows revealing a suffocating haze within the room. By the time the sun fully rose, the place would be an oven.  Gabe didn’t particularly care, but the other men, visibly uncomfortable with the heat, pulled and fanned their cotton shirts away from their chests in a poor attempt to circulate the air.  Not that it would do much good; it was too thick and humid.  The sweltering summer had long worn out its welcome.  Poor buggers.

Cards in hand, Gabe peered over at his older brother.  Edward had grown restless as well.  Hand through his black hair, pinched the base of his neck; his tell on boredom.  Why had they stayed so long?   Although each insisted he could win it back with one more game, the strangers had already lost most of their money.  A quick glance at them wiping sweat from their scruffy russet faces, brows furrowed, concentrating on their hand, reminded Gabe why he was still there… he had a reputation to uphold.

He cleared his throat and gave Edward a mischievous smile.  “Do you feel a draft?”

Title: Tides of Magic
Age and Genre: Adult Epic Fantasy
Word Count: 104,000

Query:

Elena Tarbon never dreamed she would become an Empress at only twenty-six winters past, but neither had she imagined committing mass murder.

Fear grips her town as the advent of magic causes mysterious deaths. With nothing but gems connecting the events, vengeful villagers blame Elena’s father, the mayor, for helping her mentor, the town jeweler, escape and hang him. But when Elena discovers that she controls the magic in the gems, she unleashes her own brand of justice, banishing non-magic folk from the town. Standing as a messiah for nascent magicians being persecuted throughout the land, she raises a magical city as their safe haven.

Her upstart rule draws the ire of the ruling regime. A war is stalled by the nobility-hating prince of the ruling regime, Fabius Throdden. Only he’s also the man who broke her heart ten years ago. However, Elena finds it hard to rebuff the ever-persistent and charming prince’s advances, especially when he claims he had no idea that she was even alive.

Accepting Fabius’ offer to run away and abandon their respective rules seems the obvious choice; until the elder prince of the Throddens turns up with an army of monsters capable of draining magic. Running away would mean getting her soul-mate back at the cost of deserting her people, yet the only way she can defend them is to draw magic from gems buried so deep, it could literally shatter the land.

First 250 Words:

Elena handed the child back his jeweled yoyo as a flash of yellow streaked past the window, a black jet of smoke trailing behind. Acrid fumes seeped in.

Her auburn hair came undone as Elena pressed her face to the window. At twenty-three winters past, she had handled many unpleasant people. But her heart pounded at the sight of the raucous mob gathered in front of the shop.

The flames crackled as smoldering embers of straw floated down. Elena picked up the two-year old and burst out of the shop. Fire shot though the thatched roof as two more torches landed. She clasped her master’s child closer, though he remained engrossed in the glittering blue and red toy.

“You can’t burn down the shop!” Elena shouted to the rambunctious crowd. “Have you people lost your mind?”

“Stay out of it, Elena. Dirma must pay for what he’s done.” Hogarth raised his left hand and waved her to move away.

Elena wasn’t surprised to see the burly spiteful farmer among the mob. She looked around for a sympathetic face in the throng but icy eyes fueled with rage stared back at her. “He didn’t do anything. None of us know how all of this is happening, least of all, Dirma,” she pleaded, wrapping her arms around the child tighter.

“Tell that to Samuise Lothar.” Hogarth grabbed her free hand and pulled her away from the shop. “You didn’t have to look at the horror of his body turned to ice.”

Son of a Pitch Entry #3: Traditor #sonofapitch #newadult

Title:
TRADITOR
Age and Genre: New Adult/Science Fiction
Word Count: 140,000

Query:
When Mer York meets a charming man named Bryn in the park, she doesn’t suspect that he’s actually a civil disobedient—a Dissenter—on the run from the law.  When government agents known as Company Men link her to him, Mer is thrust into a world of mind control chips and secretive organizations to which her allegiance could mean the difference between freedom and subjugation not only for her and Bryn, but for the entire country.

Traditor is a tale of adventure and romance in a society where government surveillance has grown out of control.  The novel follows protagonist Mer York’s transformation from a dutiful government worker to a Dissenter.  Although initially intending to sabotage Bryn’s plans, Mer begins to reevaluate her beliefs when she discovers that the chip he carries was designed by Company Men to control people’s minds.  Mer decides to turn traitor and fight to keep the chip safe until its existence can be made known.  At the end of many adventures Bryn and Mer seem to be in the clear—until a comrade’s death leads to betrayal by one of their own.  The book ends with Mer being implanted with the chip and interned in a facility for amnesiacs, which is in actuality a government detention center.  This sets the stage for the second book in the trilogy.

First 250 Words:
She was never sure what woke her.  Maybe there was a noise; something she couldn’t remember when she was fully awake.  Maybe it was a sort of sixth sense, the feeling that lets you know you’re being watched from behind.  Whatever it was, Mer opened her eyes just as the heavy moon hid its face behind a cloudbank.

She lay immobile for a moment.  She often woke before her alarm, a product of years of conditioning.  Normally it was two or three minutes before, however.  Judging from the darkness Mer thought it must be much earlier.

She should just go back to sleep.  Maybe she ought to take a pill?  No, no need.  Mer could feel fatigue pulling her under.

Her eyes had drifted shut, the wisps of dreams just beginning when she heard the creak.

Her first instinct was to sit up, but Mer forced herself to lie still.  It was a neighbor, she told herself.

There was another, softer this time.  It’s the floorboards.  This isn’t exactly a new place.  Houses get old, houses groan.  It’s nothing.  Go back to bed.

There was a definite thud, and a muffled curse.  Mer shot up, stumbled over her clothes, strewn upon the floor, and fell into the dresser.  She rose, swearing under her breath, then struggled into a threadbare nightshirt.  Kicking on a pair of sneakers, she grabbed the only heavy thing available—a vase—turfed out some dead flowers, and opened her door.  All in the hallway was silence.

Title:
  Jake Whittaker, PI
Category and Genre:  NA PI
Word Count:  55,000

Query:
Jake bumbles his way in most of his PI cases, but he solves them in the end—even if it may end up completely silly!

250 Words:

She wasn’t cute, she wasn’t ugly.  She didn’t look confident, she didn’t look scared.  She was maybe ten years old, with a short, faded dress over baggy tights. Looking into her big eyes, there were two things I was sure of:  She had problems, and I don’t deal with kids.

It was late on a summer night as she stood in the doorway of my office, first staring at me and then at the lettering on the door that said “Jake Whittaker, Private Investigations.”  I stared back, willing her to disappear.

She closed the door and moved toward my desk.  “Are you Jake Whittaker?”

“Yeah.”

“They said in the deli you might be able to help me.”

Oh boy!  “Look, kid,” I said, “I don’t work for free.  I cost more an hour than your whole year’s allowance.”

Damn if she didn’t burst out crying.  She just stood there with shaking shoulders and tears dripping on the floor.  She bobbed around, shifting her legs up and down, one at a time.  A strand of dark hair escaped from the rubber band at the back of her neck.  Her thin cheeks were pale, and she looked tired and hungry.  Now she looked more ugly than cute and more scared than confident.

Then I sucker-punched myself by saying, “Okay, let’s talk about it.”  I pointed to the torn seat on the client chair and got up to search through the debris on top of the file cabinet.

Title:
 The Collective
Age/Genre: New Adult/Dystopian
Word Count: 84,000

Query
Aaron had worked his whole life for this opportunity. He was actually going to become a Central Health Admin, tasked by the Superiors in the Capitol to save their people from disease, catastrophe, and chaos. Little did he know that one of these deadly epidemics would launch him and his family into a deadly political struggle.

The Collective, a 84000 word New Adult novel, is the story of Aaron’s unanticipated foray into a world of deceit and political power. Stuck between the all-powerful Collective and the mysterious Counter Collective Rebellion Force (CCRF), Aaron must find a way to ensure the safety of his family and friends, including his long-thought disappeared father and little brother.

Despite his superior analytical skills, Aaron’s frustrating lack of street smarts leads him down a bumpy path as an unlikely agent for both the Collective and CCRF. Those around him try to steer him in in the right direction, but their motives are never truly known, as all are more than willing to manipulate Aaron for their own objectives.

First 250 words

My wrist began to beep and vibrate wildly. Startled, I clumsily jumped up off my cushion. One would think I’d be used to these alarms by now. Why was I always such a jumpy mess? That beeping and vibrating meant my literary escape was over though. I had 15 minutes to get myself back to the Health Administration for the afternoon shift.

I eased open a floorboard underneath my cushion and unscrewed the top of a hollow beam to unveil a hidden mini-library of stories and novels. I liked to think it was one of the biggest in Glendale, maybe in the entire Collective. The Superiors in the Capitol didn’t see a need for novels or any sort of literature. Sure, each region had their unique traditional verbal stories passed down from generation to generation. We also had reference and textbooks used during schooling. But stories for entertainment or discussing new ideas were deemed inappropriate, unnecessary, and thus illegal. I never really understood why they had to be banned. I never saw their harm. All they did was give me a chance to escape from life for a brief moment in time and to explore new unknown places. Everyone could use a little escape from reality. Right? But the Superiors had to have a good reason for it. Who was I to question them?

I closed the hollow beam and started toward the front garden. Jessie was the only one who knew of my solitary acts of literary rebellion. Only Jessie understood the burden of our work.

Title:
No Halo
Age and Genre: NA UF
Word Count: 113,000

Query:Nineteen years old and well over six feet tall, Abigail Aristoklis is a legitimate contender for heptathlon at the next Olympics. She can thank her guardian angel, Malakim, for her tremendous athleticism and natural charm. However, “Kim” is on a mission, and she’s using Abby body as her instrument of vengeance.

When Abby finally slays the demon Kim has sought for twenty years, she draws the attention of the supernatural community. Against her wishes, she's now their newest field agent for daytime emergencies.

Abby's first mission fails disastrously when Kim seizes control and nearly gets them both killed. Their target escapes, Abby is wanted for murder, and she now worries Kim might not be the benevolent angel she claims. After Abby’s new coworkers explain that a Malakim is actually a type of demon, Abby immediately banishes her. But when an archdemon threatens to rampage across Los Angeles, only Abby is in a position to stop it. To do so, she’ll need Kim’s assistance — if Abby can still trust Kim with her soul.

First 250 Words:

Dammit. 7:02 already? Van Priestley would be here any second and I was still getting dressed.

You didn’t have to invite him over for dinner, you know. We could have just gone to a restaurant like normal people, rather than wasting an entire hour grabbing take-out so we could pretend like I had cooked.

Naturally, my “live-in partner” didn’t let that one go.

I paused in the middle of putting in my earrings.

But are you sure he’s the one, Kim? I mean, he could just be some dude. And a really hot date.

I eyed my only pair of stilettos. At my height, heels required a particularly special occasion. Then again, this night was almost twenty years in the making.

Addled! My brain is not--

My hands moved on their own, ditching the pumps for a pair of ill-matching flats. With Kim’s fashion sense, I was grateful she didn’t grab sneakers.

Under my guardian spirit’s control, my body trotted out to the living room of my cramped one-bedroom.

★ ★  WHAT EARLY REVIEWERS ARE SAYING ABOUT HIS CONFESSION ★ ★

"His Confession was a surprisingly engaging read with believable characters who were easy to connect with.It dealt with subjects a little different to what I'm used to, but the author did a great job of pulling me into her world.” - Mia Hoddell, YA/NA author.
”His Confession pulled me through from the first paragraph! The enigmatic Darion practically leapt off the pages and I could picture his every move and facial expression clear as day in my head! This story is definitely one to add to your “want-to-read” list-especially if you love a captivating plot as well as scenes so hot that they fog up your glasses. I don’t want to say too much and spoil it for future readers but DARION and GABI put Christian and Ana to SHAME! Enough said. LOL.” - Kiarra M. Taylor, contemporary romance author of THE QUARTER CHANGE.
”I loved it and I'm excited to read more to find out what happens. Darion is a great guy who was hurt badly and doesn't know how to handle, which in steps Gabi. Love love love her! Hopefully she fights for him! When does the next book come out, as I'm dying to know what comes next! I also hope the girls get their own stories.” - Susan Flynn, Beta reader Writers club.
”S. Valentine does an exquisite job at creating a dynamic between two characters, both from different worlds, that goes beyond a physical attraction. His Confession is book one in The Black Door Trilogy. It is a fast paced story that is full of hotness and anticipation that heats you up from your head to your toes. Gabi, is tired of always playing it safe. Darion, has demons that he can no longer control. When these two get together, boundaries are pushed, control is tested and emotions run wild.” - AV. Scott, author of High Heels & New York.
"A brilliant book which leaves you wondering what happened in Darion's past that has left him so wary and so afraid to put himself and his heart out there not to mention to put his faith and trust in Gabi, the one woman whose managed to penetrate the walls he's built. I can't wait for book 2 and I'm hoping that Darion and Gabi can overcome the obstacles that stand in front of them, including Eva, Darion's ex wife.” - Rebecca Barber, author Nobody's Obligation.
