Twenty years ago, I met this boy...

Picture Twenty years ago, I met this boy. He was brash and argumentative and loved to push my fucking buttons. I thought he was hot-headed and arrogant. He thought I was a goody-two-shoes who was too smart for my own good. We argued a lot about everything.

And then, one day, when there was no one else around for either of us to talk to, we had an actual conversation. I can't remember what we discussed. At twelve and sixteen years old, it probably wasn't important...except it was. Our opinions of one another slowly began to change until, one day, he told me he was going to marry me someday.

I thought he was crazy.

Eighteen years ago, when I was assaulted, he was the first person I turned to. He told me everything would be okay. That I would make it through it, and he would be there to help me.

I thought he was crazy.

Six months later, when they found the first brain lesion, he was the first person I turned to. Again, he told me everything would be okay. That I would make it through it, and he would be there to help me.

I thought he was crazy then, too.

I thought he was crazy again sixteen years ago when he told me everything would be okay when I stopped going to public school and started an independent study because of issues with the lesions. And fourteen years ago, when I quit my first "adult" job and starting CNA classes. And I thought he was crazy a thousand times in between when he promised me everything would be okay when I was overwhelmed, stressed out, and ready to quit.

Thirteen years ago, when he asked me to be his wife, I thought he was crazy then, too. I was only nineteen, trying to look after my seventeen year old sister. But I didn't hesitate to say yes to him.

Twelve years ago today, that hot-headed, arrogant boy made me his wife.

I thought he was crazy then, too. But, as it turns out, he's been right since the very beginning. He's been there every step of the way since we were both kids, proving me wrong when nothing seemed to be going right in my life.

Except him. He's always been right. Right about me. Right beside me. Right for me.

So twenty years ago, I met this boy. He was brash and argumentative, and loved to push my fucking buttons. I thought he was hot-headed and arrogant. And then he changed my life.

About STRICKEN

It took only four months to bring the angels to their knees…

With a virus ravaging the fallen angels on earth, mankind’s symbol of love and hope is at risk of extinction.

Centuries ago, a group of angelic warriors known as The Fallen risked everything to save themselves and carve a future for their kind. Hope slips away as The Fallen and their kin are cut down by an ancient menace, La Morte Nera—and no one saw it coming.

Only one immortal can save them, and only one mortal can stand in his way…

When Nephilim warrior Killian St. James sets out on a quest to find a cure, he and his blade-brothers discover nineteen-year-old Aubrey Carter—a human with a past as dark as it is mysterious—cowering in an abandoned house in the heart of Memphis, Tennessee.

The corrupted races are chasing her, and Killian is determined to find out why…

But neither he nor Aubrey are prepared for their attraction to one another, or for the frightening truths lurking in the shadows. The painful childhood memories Aubrey has buried hold precious answers. Answers that threaten to tear Killian's world apart.

With her life hanging in the balance, Killian must choose between the future of The Fallen, and the human girl he's pledged to protect.

Demons are rising, and this time they plan to win the war for dominion once and for all.

Excerpt

“Evelyn, open the fucking door.” Travie stormed his way over to the door and yanked it open. “She’s here! You know falling in love with this woman will fucking ruin you, right? She will cut you open.” “Then let me fucking bleed,” Parks snarled, forcing Travie to back off as Travie’s eyes scanned the incredible body of the Incredible Hulk that stood in the doorway. Travie turned to me, nostrils flaring, temper rising, then he turned back to Parks. “I hope you know what you’re dealing with here. This bitch is fucked up and uncontrollable.” Parks’s jaw tightened and the fine angles of his face sharpened in anger right before he swung a right hook to Travie’s jaw, making him stumble backwards. Travie knew better than to retaliate, so he held his hands up in surrender. “She’s all yours.” Parks marched towards me, his stride fierce and primal. His presence stopped my heart. I knew he was about to explode, but I couldn’t help but notice the way my chest had tightened as soon as he walked in. The way the heat between my legs soared and ached as I watched his long legs coming towards me, knowing damn well what he was packing between them. It was the wrong moment to be thinking with my lady organ, but fuck me, I wanted to ride his cock the moment I saw him. At first it was tough to accept or believe that Parks affected me so vigorously. However, I had accepted it and loved it. I craved the way he made me feel. I never even got to defend myself as Parks grabbed hold of my wrist and pulled me out of the shop. I tried to move in the opposite direction so he couldn’t get a good grip on me. “Let go,” I yelled, yanking on his arm, but he wouldn’t relent. We were moving closer to his Jaguar that was parked bedside the kerb, so I pulled harder. “You forget the part where you are mine,” Parks yelled back, yanking the passenger-side door open and pushing me into the car. “I’m yours?” I scoffed as I glared at him, but instead of answering he slammed the door on me. I waited until he got into his side of the car, then punched him in the shoulder. “If I belong to you, then why are we not together? You can’t tell me I’m yours when you don’t fucking want me. If you don’t want me, then someone else will.” I yanked on the handle, trying to escape, but he pulled me back in and locked the doors. “No one else will ever touch you. Ever. You hear me? Everything about you belongs to me. For as long as I live, I will make sure you never go near any man that isn’t me.” “I can fuck who I like. You don’t want me,” I screamed, getting in his face. I was beyond exhausted, furious, and turned the fuck on by his presence. I ached for him in ways I shouldn’t have ached. Parks’s jaw tightened again. “Don’t fuck with me, Evelyn. You’re really pushing me.” “Good,” I spat insolently. “Maybe I wanna fucking push you. Because it’s better to get a reaction from you than get nothing at all.” He gripped hold of me by the tops of my arms. “This is why you did this? To push me?” I ripped away from him. “To gauge a reaction. I need you, Wade. I really fucking need you, and you’re not there to hold me at night. You’re not there to be my safe. I thought you loved me.” He punched the steering wheel again. “Evelyn, I love you more than anything on this fucking planet.” “Then love me,” I screamed.

- EXCERPT -
While I was working backstage later that evening, I heard a few new guests entering the premises. One was K.L., and the other was Ella Green. Ella Green was well known for her publicity stunts and her YouTube videos. Although I had never seen one, I was pretty sure she was here to interview the band. As for K.L., he was here for the same reason he was at the diner where we had lunch: to reel me into his world. I refused, knowing that wouldn’t stop him from trying again.
“Frances, can you take Ms. Green and Mr. James to the green room?” one roadie asked me. I threw the towel I was haphazardly folding to the side, and I went to guide Ella and K.L. to the green room.
When we got there Ben was celebrating something, and he wanted me to hear it. He showed me the invitation that had been waiting for them when they got here. It was for the American Music Awards in November, and when I saw that he and the band were nominated for an award, I was just as giddy with excitement as the whole lot of them. Ben and I hugged and jumped up and down, squealing in excitement.
After we came back to our senses I said, “Oh, guys Ella Green and K.L are here.” The sound of Ella’s name struck a fire in Ben. Not a good fire either.
“Is something wrong?” I asked.
Ella was suddenly screaming at Ben. I was so confused, and so when Ella kept yelling, I yelled over her.
“Shut up! What the hell is going on?” I asked.
Ben waved his hand, signaling that I should leave this alone and I ignored him.
“Don’t you know?” Ella said. “I wanted to date the wonderful Ben Morrison, but he refused. He refused! Like, who refuses to date me? I’m Ella Green for Christ’s sake, I’m the mother—”
“It’s time to shut up, Ella. I can see your ego loud and clear.” She gasped at my comment, more enraged that I even spoke to her during her outburst than the fact that my brother had refused her invitation.
“Who are you? Like, what are you even doing here? You were folding towels when I came in, you’re a little good for nothing—”
It was a reflex, and I mean it when I say this—but I punched her in the nose. Usually I’m pretty good at controlling my anger, and other times I don’t realize how angry I am and my reflexes take over. She was wailing like a child, and holding her head back as she stumbled around as if my punch to her nose had debilitated her ability to maintain her balance.
“Dammit, Frances! Do you know who she is?” Ben was yelling at me now, and I didn’t know how to react. He was rushing to get towels and ice for Ella.
After a medic checked her nose and said it was fine, she was escorted off the premises, all the while shouting about how I was going to pay for this. I was like a child stuck in the time out corner when Ben came back. My arms were wrapped around myself for safety, and I hung my head in shame.“What are you doing, Bea? Do you want to get us into trouble? She’s a YouTube star. She could easily post a rant about this and make it go viral overnight!"
It was time to prepare for the show, and I tried to leave, except Ben wouldn’t stop yelling.
“Frances, if you keep screwing things up the way you are, I'm going to regret ever bringing you on this tour! How can I show the world how wonderful my sister is if she keeps acting like a whiny, spoiled brat with an uncontrollable right hook?"
I could tell Everett was about to call him out on his behavior, but I shot him a look that told him not to.
“I’m sorry, Ben, it won’t happen again. I’ll go back to folding towels.” I had never been so isolated and demeaned in my life. So much for sibling love.

- EXCERPT -Connor leaned against the window frame with his arms crossed as he watched the waves crashing against the rocks. In front of him, as wide as the horizon, was the ocean. With the clouds drifting in from the sea, the sky had turned grey and dark, and he knew there’d be even more rain coming later in the day.
He would’ve enjoyed the scene if it hadn’t reminded him of his changing life. He’d been back in Fermosa Bay for two days already, but the memories of the first seven years of his life he’d spent in this small Australian coastal town were tucked away in the back of his mind. Seemingly inaccessible. Nowadays, his life was in London and had been for the last twenty-three years. He took a couple of deep breaths as he looked towards the harbour in the distance, and the small town in the alcove with the hilly forest in the background where he’d spend the first seven years of his life. It was truly one very picturesque little place.
A noise from the other end of the house hauled him back from his thoughts, and he stepped away from the window. Over the last few weeks, since he’d decided to accept Jack’s invitation to Australia, he’d had visions of what he’d find here. His mother hadn’t told him much about the time she’d lived here, except about Jack owning a pub. Connor had been furious for her lack of memory, but in the end admitted to himself it’d probably not been a time she’d like to remember.
So he was surprised to find out that Jack lived in this massive house just outside Fermosa Bay, on the top of the cliffs, with a view over the ocean. The house had five rooms and a small study at the back. The lounge room, with a high pitched ceiling, had wood fire heating and a big window front. Connor had loved the house the instant he’d stepped into it.
When he entered the hall, he saw his father and said, “Good morning, Jack.”
The old man sighed sadly. “You still can’t bring it over your heart to call me Dad?”
Connor’s gaze wandered from his father to all the many framed photos along the wall. Jack was in many of the photos, but most them had people in them he didn’t know, except the biggest one, which showed Connor as a child in Jack’s arms. A wave of sadness shook him. No, it wasn’t in him to call him Dad. Or to even think of him as his dad.
After a moment’s silence, he turned to his father and shook his head. “Sorry.”
Jack coughed, and Connor quickly rushed to his side, holding him upright.
“Another bad day?” Connor asked.
“Son, there will be no more good days. One day is like the other, until it will be the last.”
The words struck Connor deep enough to feel some emotions for his father. He knew time was running out, but hearing it made it sound final.
“There’s a front coming, but I think you’d be able to sit outside for a little while. At least until the nurse comes.”
Jack simply nodded.
Connor helped his father out onto the deck where the old man sat down on his swing seat.
“Thanks, Son.”
Without a reply, Connor stepped away and watched the sea again.
“I couldn’t keep you away from the water when you were a child,” Jack said.
“What do you mean?” Connor asked.
Jack didn’t answer, so he turned around to look at his father. The old man stared into the distance, a withdrawn expression on his face.
“You were constantly in the water. Whatever opportunity you had, you grabbed your little board and spent most of the day there.”
“So what happened?”
His father shrugged. “You left with your mother.”
Sitting down on the chair next to Jack, Connor let out a long breath. “Something must’ve happened. I never go near water, let alone go in it.”
Still gazing into the distance, Jack said, “I still have the blue board. Ethan’s little son sometimes uses it nowadays.”
Not sure where the conversation was heading, Connor just went along. “Who’s Ethan?” he asked.
The reaction from his father wasn’t what he expected. With his shoulders sagged, Jack closed his eyes. He looked so old and frail. From what Connor saw in all the photos around the house, cancer had taken a lot of life out of his father, leaving behind a haggard body with no energy left. Initially, he’d been taken aback by their similarities in looks, with their dark brown eyes and dark blond hair, including the stubborn curl above the ears, but after all, Jack was his father.
“Ethan was your best friend when you lived here.”
Pain shot through Connor as he was again confronted with a piece of information about his past that he knew nothing about. What had happened all those years ago, that his memory blocked these recollections of his childhood?
“How is your mother?” Jack asked suddenly.
Was it a sign of his illness that the old man wasn’t able to hold on to one topic anymore, or was he out to annoy Connor?
“She’s doing well.”
“Married?”
“Yes.”
Jack nodded. “She was beautiful when she lived here. So beautiful.”
Leaning forward to rest his arms on his knees, Connor asked, “Why did you ask her to leave?”
Finally, their eyes locked, and his father’s confusion took Connor aback.
“Son, what are you talking about?”

What reviewers are saying about ECHOES OF THE PAST:
I received this book as an ARC - and absolutely loved it!!!!
It is sweet and gentle yet filled with very strong emotions book, which will make you ponder upon the fate and decisions of the characters long after you finish reading :)

It will appeal not only to the true romance-loving readers, but also to those who, like me, reach for that genre occasionally, when in need of a read that would touch their hearts :D And this is it!!!
I honestly do not remember last time I've read something so gentle, so dear - yet tugging on all the inner feelings strings with quite a strength!

Who said you can’t find your soul mate at seven years old?

For Emily, who lived her whole life in the sleepy Fermosa Bay Australia she always knew that Connor was the one. At seven years old, the whole town had them married off living a quiet happy life. But when an innocent accident happens, Connor’s mother takes the opportunity to whisk her son away to a life that offers more.

Growing up in London in the shadow of his step father, Connor becomes a successful and sought after lawyer with the world at his feet. When his biological father tracks him down, a father he has no memory of and asks him to return home to Australia, Connor can’t say no. Especially to his dying father.

This is a beautiful tale of rediscovering what you already had and what really matters. Reconnecting with old friends and old loves opens Connor’s heart to a world he never anticipated. Iris had me in tears with this sweet story of coming home. Congratulations. A must read for anyone with a romantic heart!

New Release: Target on Our Backs by J.M. Darhower #romance #suspense

Picture #nazisback, you guys! Target on our Backs, the third book in J.M Darhower's Monster In His Eyes series, is LIVE! Picture Summary

The best way to keep your word is never to give it.

Not long ago, in a chapel in Vegas, I swore to love Karissa for the rest of my days. But nobody's promised an infinite number of tomorrows. Nobody's promised forever. Sometimes, all we have left is today.

Carpe Diem
Seize the day.

It should've been over, we should've been happy, but people are making it hard for me to live in peace. I've got so much blood on my hands they'll never be clean, and somebody out there seems to want me to pay for it. Happily Ever After always comes at a cost, one any real man would be willing to pay. But that doesn't mean I'm just going to roll over and accept these consequences.

Because when it comes to the woman I love? The life I've fought for?

Nobody is safe.

Picture Picture Killian stepped forward, forcing her to tilt her head back to look up at him. He still seemed so big to her. He still overwhelmed her. But he didn’t frighten her anymore.

“You look tired.” She fought the urge to lift her hand to touch his gorgeous face.

“I am,” he said, the corner of his lips turning up in a half smile.

“Oh.”

He stared down at her, his half smile slipping. A dizzying parade of emotions swirled through his eyes. She couldn’t read them all, but she understood enough. He felt as torn as she did.

“Will I remember you three years from now?” she whispered, her heart aching with the fear that she would forget him as she had so much else…and with fear that she would remember him. That she would survive this nightmare and he would haunt her for the rest of her days like so much else did.

“Do you want to remember me?” He took another step in her direction.

“I don’t know.”  She frowned, confused. “You make me feel like maybe the world isn’t so bad. Like maybe I’m safe with you. I don’t think I want to forget that.”

Killian tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and cupped her cheek gently in one big hand. “You are safe with me. I won’t let anyone hurt you, Aubrey.”

She stared at him for a long, silent moment. He’d promised before that he wouldn’t hurt her, but even then an unspoken fear had stood between them like a wall. A little voice whispered that if she got too close, he would hurt her as badly as the things in her past hurt. That voice had stopped whispering when he’d kissed her today, and wasn’t that odd?

“You hurt me today.”

He bowed his head, letting his hand fall away from her face. “I’m sorry.”

Her heart ached a little at the agonized way he said it. As if it shamed him to know he’d hurt her. As if, maybe, he cared more than he should too.

“Why did you?” she asked, not accusing, but curious. She wanted to understand him. No, she needed to understand him on some level she couldn’t even explain to herself. “You wanted me, didn’t you?”

His gaze sought hers, honesty shining from his angel-bright eyes. “More than you know.”

Aubrey took a deep breath, letting her lungs fill with air even as her heart filled with his confession. And just as quickly, the buoyant feeling vanished. “It doesn’t change anything, though, does it?” she whispered.

“Do you want it to?”

She hesitated for a long moment, unsure. And then her shoulders slumped, the breath she’d taken expelling in a long sigh. “I’m sorry.”

Killian gave her a sad smile and reached for her again. He swept a finger beneath her eye, collecting the teardrop she hadn’t even realized had fallen. “No apologies,” he whispered, bringing his finger to his mouth. He stuck out the tip of his tongue and lapped that single bead of moisture from his fingertip. “You owe me nothing.”

If that was true, why did she feel like crying?
