Friday Featured Author: Aileen Harkwood

Featured Author graphic

This week’s featured author is Aileen Harkwood. Before we get to the interview and all the deets about her new release, let me share a bit about Aileen.

Aileen Harkwood is a Readers’ Crown finalist who lives in the Southern Rockies. The Last Wedding at Drayhome is the prequel to two concurrent series of fantasy romances, Spell Touched: Breens Mist Witches, Book 1, and Wedding Spell, first in the Breens Mist Weddings series, due out in September 2015. She’s passionate about green chile and the mysteries hiding in antique photographs.

The Last Wedding at Drayhome is my contribution to the new box set Magical Weddings: 15 Enchanting Romances. The novella is a standalone, but also works as a prequel to my Breens Mist Witches and Breens Mist Weddings series. At the risk of sounding obvious, I love weddings. Whether or not the magic is “real,” it’s there for everyone to experience.

I also love romances about witches. In my novella, Drayhome, a magical estate with a mind of its own, is under threat. Colleen McColly, the estate’s witch caretaker is in the midst of preparing for a wedding to take place on the estate. Enter Terry “Ax” Paxton, a warlock with orders to evict Colleen, and end Drayhome’s century-plus-reign as the heart and soul for the magical community of Breens Mist, Oregon. It’s a duty against which Ax rebels, not just because it’s wrong, but because he and Colleen have a connection of their own, raw, passionate and too many years denied.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

A pantser. Once upon a time, I tried to be a plotter and failed miserably at it.

My favorite quote about this is from George R. R. Martin, “I think there are two types of writers, the architects and the gardeners. The architects plan everything ahead of time, like an architect building a house. They know how many rooms are going to be in the house, what kind of roof they’re going to have, where the wires are going to run, what kind of plumbing there’s going to be. They have the whole thing designed and blueprinted out before they even nail the first board up. The gardeners dig a hole, drop in a seed and water it. They kind of know what seed it is, they know if planted a fantasy seed or mystery seed or whatever. But as the plant comes up and they water it, they don’t know how many branches it’s going to have, they find out as it grows.”

Typically, the characters plot things for me. They’re much better at it than I am.

What was the most difficult part of the publishing process for you?

Trying to figure out—and I’m talking about Magical Weddings here, since I was the set’s organizer—how to round up 15 of us into a single box set. I thought I knew how much work would be involved. Wrong! I should have multiplied that by ten. Organizing a collection of mostly new releases (only one story was a reprint) is, I imagine, sort of like being a book editor. Except you don’t have an assistant, or a graphic designer, publicity person, copywriter, or proofreader, and you aren’t actually editing anything. You’re depending on your co-authors to fill many of those roles. Thankfully, the amazingly talented group of women who offered their stories for Magical Weddings stepped up to the task and have knocked themselves out, providing an enthusiasm for this project I doubt few could match. Box sets truly are a team effort.

How about the most fun?

Seeing Magical Weddings come together with so many different voices to form a cohesive whole. It sounds strange, but though I’ve dipped into each story in the set, I’ve been so busy I haven’t been able to read them until now.

I read the last one in the set first, The Wedding Guests by Sarah Wynde and was in tears by the end, the ghosts, the expression of love, even the last line made hers the perfect ending story for us.

At the other end, Leigh Michaels starts us off with this delightfully feisty romp of a Regency involving a bet between a gentleman and a lady, in Her Wedding Wager.

I found Eve Devon’s The Dress stunningly romantic with its bespelled lace wedding gown, and again burst into tears when I read the surprise in the last two lines. I also admire how Tamara Ferguson tackled the sensitive subject of an Iraq War vet who returns home to his love damaged in body and soul, and in dire need of a special brand of magic.

At the moment, I’m deep into Jody A. Kessler’s The Heart of the Secret (Witches of Lane County) and enjoying it immensely. Even if she weren’t writing paranormal, Jody would still be weaving subtle enchantment into every facet of the relationships between her heroes and heroines.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I couldn’t help myself. I was completely entranced with the idea that stories you wrote and illustrated in crayon (I was seven-years-old at the time) could be bound and made into a permanent book to read again and again. I wrote my first one, crafted a cardboard cover, and set it on my bookshelf next to The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Believe me, C.S. Lewis, though long dead, had nothing to worry about. My first effort was everything you could expect from someone in the second grade.

Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)

I wish I could say I’m one of those people who gets up and starts writing at the same time every day, but I’m not. It’s just not how creativity works for me. With Drayhome, I started the story, and did work on it every day for several weeks without a break, but that’s highly unusual for me. More often I work in spurts of a few days at time, with no set hours. You could say I felt driven by this particular story, and couldn’t let up until it was done. As far as beverages and snacks go, it’s ice tea and Raisinettes all the way.

What projects are you working on at the present?

My next book, Wedding Spell is the first of four books in the Breens Mist Weddings series. I introduced the heroine, Lysée Burke, in Drayhome, along with two of her friends, all witches, who each get their own story in the series. Wedding Spell is set for a September release. After that will come Book 2 in the Breens Mist Witches series.

What do your plans for future projects include?

That is a problem. I have too many plans for future projects! At least four novels are awaiting completion. Just wish I had some magic of my own that would help me finish them faster.

In Relics, the creatures of magic returned to Earth.

In Portals, magic itself returned.

In Magics, we’ll wish it hadn’t.

The laws of magic have become as real as the laws of physics, and humans with magical powers are becoming the norm.

But human magic is out of control – powerful, wild, unpredictable. Five ultra-powerful humans rise above the rest to begin a reign of terror, and entire cities fall. The elves and other Elder Races are desperate to find and stop these magical terrorists. But for the first time, the magic of the Elder Races is surpassed.

Thulu and La Fi join the hunt for the human supes causing the planet-wide massacres. With their own magic evolving and erratic, the race to catch the killers becomes far more difficult. They need to find them and stop the chaos before there is no world left to save.

Excerpt from Magics, Modern Magics, Book 3

The dead girl jumped as the series of explosions rocked our office. To tell the truth, so did Thulu and I. My husband and I exchanged a long look as the sounds of shrieking and groaning from metal and concrete giants shattered the morning. The time had come. My heart fell, and I felt tears threaten.

There were only those few moments of regret before the lights flickered and went out. The skylight allowed us to see each other, so Thulu and I moved quickly.

“This is it,” I said to Thulu, my heart pounding. I shook my head regretfully at our client. “I’m sorry. Things are going to be bad for a while. I’m not sure we will be able to take your case for some time.”

Blanche Nielsen sat in the chair before our desks, blond hair swinging as her head swiveled between the two of us. The look of alarm still on her slightly transparent face.

“What do you mean?”

Thulu snatched up Carter, our three-year-old son, from where he was coloring. Carter looked from Thulu to me, his small face showing alarm, but we had made sure to prepare him for this as much as we could. He didn’t say anything, just wrapped his arms around Thulu’s neck.

Thulu glanced at Blanche as he stuffed a few favorite toys into Carter’s messenger bag. “We’ve been expecting something to happen. You see, our whole solar system is moving through an area of space where magic has become real. Things are going to get crazy for a while.” He paused as he glanced around the office and shouldered the bag. “The dead should be fine, but we won’t be able to help anyone out until things settle down.”

During his explanation, I quickly grabbed our tablets and stuffed them into my own bag. I picked up our puppy, Treya, attaching her leash before putting her in the pet travel bag. In less than a minute, we moved to the back door, trailed forlornly by our dead client.

We moved smoothly, in spite of not having practiced our evacuation. However, our plan of action had been in place, and we knew what needed to be done.

We went through our small storage area, but it was dim without the skylight. At the back door, Thulu turned to hand Carter to me. My son’s arms went around my neck clinging tightly. I reached up to loosen them as Parker popped in, eyes huge with what I thought might be shock, but his jaw was clenched with determination. The young ghost had more substance to him than our new client. A client we might never be able to help.

“Be careful opening the door,” Parker said, just as the ghosts of my grandmother, Nana Fae, and Thulu’s mother, Mama Deb, materialized.

“How bad is it?” Thulu asked.

“Bad,” said Mama Deb at the same time Nana Fae spoke.

“Awful.”

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I aspire to plan, but always end up being a pantser. When I write, I let the characters tell me where to go. They do things that I don’t anticipate.

What was the most difficult part of the publishing process for you?

Letting people know about my books. Now that I’m a self-published author, I find it easier to market, which is the opposite of most people, but it’s working for me. In my dreams I’ll get published by one of the big publishing houses and be on the NY Times bestseller list.

How about the most fun?

The characters and seeing how they develop. Oh, and hearing from people who’ve enjoyed my stories. That’s always a banner day!

What inspired you to write your first book?

The HBO series, True Blood. I was so taken with the first season and something clicked in my brain and I started writing and writing and writing.

Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)

Coffee.

What projects are you working on at the present?

The last book in the The Last Keeper’s Daughter series.

And a mystery / romance involving stolen artwork.

The Last Keeper's Daughter - New Cover Color

COVERT WEBS Excerpt:

A sharp beep drew Dria’s attention. The communication console glowed and she reached out, touching the button. “Yes?”

“Turana, we’ve received an encoded transmission for you. The gentleman is most insistent and is using the Omega code.” The captain’s face betrayed no concern, but in his eyes, she read a hint of panic.

“Connect me.”

His face faded away, replaced by another, harsher visage.

“Forgive me, Turana Dria. My name is Commander Marcus Vane, and I am to be your contact on Earth. I’ve received some intelligence that the Incubi plan to strike when you arrive.”

She leaned forward. “I see, and you know this how?”

No matter how hard she tried, the pounding of her blood pulsed faster as interest flared deep in her belly. Her fingers flexed, and she wished for some physical outlet for the strong emotion that filled her. A hiss escaped between her tight lips, and even that angered her. After so many years of training herself to be calm and controlled in all things, how could she allow even that small sign of impatience and anger to escape?

“We intercepted a transmission showing they are aware of the suggested landing sites and times.”

Dria frowned at his words. “And so…”

“I have a suggestion that may allow us to circumvent their plans.”

Even as she weighed his words, she scanned his face, noting the full lips and cobalt blue eyes. She told her body not to respond to the unfamiliar pull of fascination, but her physical reaction only grew.

“Tell me.” She spoke harshly, and watched the way his mouth thinned at her command. The small bow of his head was the only acknowledgement of subservience.

“Of course, Turana. I propose that we bring you planet-side early. Before they have an opportunity to complete their plans. The airfield is under constant surveillance, which leads me to believe they have inside knowledge of our plans.”

“I see.” Her short answers and demands sounded almost childish, and she winced inwardly.

“You have read the briefing paper?” His voice cut through her thoughts.

“I… Yes.” The tactical briefing she’d received left more questions than it answered and anger flared, white-hot. “Contact the captain with your plan, then have him apprise me of the changes.” She kept her response brief while her fingers curled with the urge to reach out and trace the planes of his face. Stupid reaction, Dria. Control yourself!

“Of course, Turana. Do you have any queries?” His voice now was melodious, and a flare of heat warmed her belly.

“No. Send the details. We’ll make it work.”

“Then I shall leave you…”

“Yes. Good day.” The screen darkened, and she rubbed her hands over tired eyes. “Aargh!

Tugging her hands through her long curls didn’t help. Instead, yards of material pooled at her elbows, reminding her of the part she was supposed to play. Squeezing her eyes shut didn’t help either. Too many relied on her to save them to get lost in her fears.

Dria squared her shoulders and inhaled a shuddering breath. “I will not fail.”

THE SPACESHIP CAPTAIN’S DAUGHTER Excerpt:

“As much as I’d like to pass her about, I do know her father. He’s a good man. Give her a choice,” Blood, the captain of the Heartless, said. “She can be yours, or we can turn her in.”

“I want to deliver the medicine. It’s worthless, except to the people who are sick. Why are you doing this?” she asked in a groggy tone.

“Brizette Julius,” Blood said.

The girl flinched. Her eyes widened a bit. “How do you know my name?” She pulled the blanket securely around her. Matek found himself moving closer to her, as if he could somehow shield her with his body.

“Your father saved me once. I owe him, but this is business. There are people who would pay a lot of money to see that this medicine doesn’t arrive. I have several willing buyers waiting. The Talorians should have just given up and moved on. They made their choice to stay.”

“They’re all that’s left of their race!”

“Then, sweet Brizette, they should have been cautious about where they chose to settle,” Blood said without any hint of remorse.

“Briz, my name is just Briz. I know you think the money is what you want, but can you honestly look me in the eyes and tell me the deaths of little children won’t haunt your nightmares? You have the chance to save an entire race.”

Blood threw his head back and laughed hysterically. His wide smile made him appear ten years younger. When he abruptly stopped laughing and sneered at Briz, she took a step back, bumping into Matek. He put a single hand on her bare shoulder. She didn’t shrug his touch away.

“Money is the only thing that matters to me, little girl. Grow up. Men like me and my crew would burn the world for a handful of coins. I’ll give you a choice—Matek’s claim or I’ll turn you over to Indra. Your father’s company would never be free to transport here again, but you’ll be spared a pirate’s touch. When he tires of you he’ll cast you off to be our plaything. What fate do you choose, Briz Julius? We all make choices for our beliefs. What do you value more, your honor or your father’s company?”

The girl bit her lip. To her credit she didn’t flinch or look away from Blood’s hateful stare. She didn’t beg or cry.

“I choose to protect my father. Who in the name of the gods is Matek?”

“He’s the man with his hand on your shoulder.”

Briz jerked out of his touch and spun around. Her lips compressed and her brow wrinkled. The others laughed, but he kept his expression neutral, and he didn’t look away until she did.

“Take her and tame her. I like mine docile,” Blood said before he began a renewed session of laughter.

Matek scooped Briz up in a smooth motion. Her initial stillness spoke of her surprise, but then she began kicking and screaming. He turned and carried her down the corridor. Tanna and Okthu stomped past him and gave the girl dark looks. They’d hurt her as payback if he wasn’t cautious.

Matek’s throat tightened. When his people claimed a mate it was for life. There was no changing your mind once you made a public declaration of intent. The pirate code was much different, but a claim had still been made. She was his.

HER CLONE Excerpt:

“I always thought that, as clones, they would have been programmed what to think,” Angela said. “Until I landed, I never realized they’d be capable of such emotion, like the hate they carried for us. Fury…”

“Lust.” Damon’s deep voice clipped, the husky quality sounding bitter rather than playful. Perhaps he was angered over her story she’d revealed to him. Although Damon was still a stranger, Angela realized something deeper ran between them.

She glanced over at him as they hiked on. His eyes were set on the landscape before them as if on high alert so they wouldn’t encounter unexpected company once more. The intensity of his gaze and his lethal stride left Angela breathless. She shook it off. “I suppose I thought the clones would be more robotic in nature, stoic, like our own armies at home. They’re programmed to do as they’re told from the very first boot camp.”

Angela screamed as Damon snatched her into his arms and dipped her backward. His face hovered a feather’s width away from her own. “Never question this—there is no being on any planet that could not be stirred by your presence.”

By the time he finished speaking, her lips were all but begging for his kiss. The heat in his gaze promised she wouldn’t be disappointed. He kissed her long and slow, her body melting into his arms. His hands kneaded her curves gently, making her moan with desire as he stroked the inside of her mouth with his tongue.

The kiss broke, but instead of releasing her, Damon scooped her up and began carrying her.

Her brows furrowed automatically. “We’re on a mission, not a honeymoon, Damon.”

My mission is to keep you out of harm’s way. We were nearly spotted earlier, we need to lay low.” He carried her toward a steep hill. “We’ll hide in plain sight atop that plateau. It’s small enough we won’t be caught unaware, and we can watch for anyone on the ground.”

“We don’t have time for a field trip.”

“You’re wrong.” Damon never faltered as he began climbing up the hill with her in his arms. “We have all the time we need, for you won’t find what you’re looking for. The damage was done long ago.”

Angela sucked in a breath, the hurt still burning within her chest. “Aren’t you a ray of sunshine?” She watched the hill slowly pass beneath Damon’s feet. “I can walk, you know.”

“I know.” He cast her a sly grin. “I’ve never had something I’ve cherished to hold in my arms. Now I’m reluctant to let it go.”

Angela raised a brow. “Jungle fever, eh?”

Damon took several long strides and soon they arrived on top of the small plateau. He laid her on the ground, a primal glint in his eyes and a smile on his lips that sent a jolt of electricity through her body. “A fever indeed.”

When she meets him again, Kory isn’t the human boy she remembered. He has survived a horrific scientific experiment that has changed him into a hybrid—half human, half TEV. Can she trust this man who has now, essentially, become a member of the enemy?

BOND Excerpt:

He completely surprised Freya when he bent his head and kissed her. His firm lips covered hers, teased them apart until his tongue swept in to dance with hers. This wasn’t the kiss of a young boy fumbling where to put his hands or how to hold his head. This was the kiss of a man claiming what was his. He took, overwhelming her, laying siege to everything she was. One of his hands cupped her breast, squeezing it through the cotton shirt to flick across the nipple.

She moaned. The sensations were so new, so raw, that he took her breath away. Freya didn’t know what to do, so she went with what her body demanded and surged up, undulating her hips and thrusting her pelvis against his. The friction was so heady that she did it again, dry humping against him as a coil tightened deep inside.

He suddenly rolled away, settling next to her.

Freya was thrust into shock, her body still craved his weight, his heat.

“We need to leave,” he said, panting slightly.

“What?” Her thoughts were completely discombobulated.

He sat up and wouldn’t look at her. “It’s a long trek back to the mountain.”

“Wait! You just kissed me.”

“And you just let me.”

They stared at one another and all sorts of recriminations swarmed through her body. How could she kiss an alien? Betray her species? And how could she still crave his touch?

“Why did you stop?” she asked, biting her lip. She hated the fact she was so weak.

“Because you deserve something better than a bed of dirt.” He sighed and ran a hand through his mop of dark hair. “Besides, we just found each other again. It’s been thirteen years, Freya. We need to learn about each other again, not to mention the fact I want you to believe that Iam Kory.”

Friday Featured Author: Josephine Templeton

Featured Author graphic

Today, Josphine Templeton is our Featured author. Please welcome her to the blog!

About Josephine Templeton

As the youngest of nine children, I’ve learned a lot from my older siblings.  I’m still amazed at how different we are, but at the same time, how much alike.  I was the only child in the house by the time I reached high school.  So I had plenty of time to nurture my reading and writing skills.  My favorite author at the time was V.C. Andrews, and my first story was what is now known as fan fiction, with Indiana Jones as the main character.  In fact, one story I wrote had him switching planes in flight, and my mom pointed out that was impossible.  Who would have guess many years later that Harrison Ford would star in a movie in which he actually DID switch planes in flight (Air Force One, 1997)?!

I’m a member of HeartLa (the Baton Rouge chapter of Romance Writers of America) and have done freelance writing with Baton Rouge’s Town Favorites, Lafayette’s 008 Magazine, and Baton Rouge Parents Magazine.  I have three previously published novels under my wings (Convicted of Love – a historical romance, Forever Yours- a vampire romance, and A Pirate’s Kiss – a historical romance).

Thank you so much for hosting me on your blog today!

Enjoy the demon-wings!

The Interview

Tell us about your latest release?

I’m super excited to announce the re-release of Scorned, Book 1 of The Fallen Angelle Series.  This new and improved version of my Urban Fantasy with Romantic Elements is set in and around Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Angelle, God’s first Angel, fell from grace along with Satan. However, after thousands of years as Satan’s girlfriend, Angelle wants back into heaven and becomes human. Now she must atone for her sins and save as many souls as she damned while fighting vampires and demons. One more condition — she must remain celibate.

Jack, a vampire hunter, visits Angelle’s bar, and their attraction is instant. But after watching her walk away from a car accident, he’s convinced she’s a vampire and must die. When Angelle doesn’t burst into flames at sunrise, Jack joins her quest to save souls. The partnership is jeopardized when two of the Scorned Bride’s daughters enthrall him.

Angelle must save Jack from another dimension, but in doing so, she risks her salvation. Will Jack want to be saved by the time she finds him? And if they survive the Scorned Bride, can they survive each other?

Are you a plotter or pantser?

We all start off as pantsers, but over the years, I became a plotter. I’ve recently had to go back to my roots and “put my pants back on”. So I guess you could call me a plot-ser!

What was the most difficult part of the publishing process for you?

Getting my name out there. I work 40 hours a week at an accounting firm, and while I attend one or two conferences a year, I have to rely mostly on social media, which is swamped with other authors and more.

How about the most fun?

The most fun is getting the first look at the book cover!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00066]What inspired you to write your first book?

Going back to my ten year high school reunion. I’d written plenty of poems and short stories, so I took one of those and wrote Forever Yours.

Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)

The only ritual would be to put on some music. I listen to a wide variety – from classic rock (LOVE Stevie Nicks) to country to jazz (Michael Buble!!!)

Who is your go-to author, the one you know you can always count on to deliver a great story?

Jim Butcher and Laurell K. Hamilton

What projects are you working on at the present?

I am currently finishing the first rough draft of Broken, Book 2 of the Fallen Angelle series.  I only have 4 chapters left!  Woot woot!  Then the editing process begins …

What do your plans for future projects include?

Heeled, Book 3 of the Fallen Angelle series.  Ideas are pouring into my head for that one!

Tuesday Teaser: Arlene Hittle’s Just Right, Part of the And They Lived Happily Ever After Boxed Set

The Path to Just Right

A good chunk of JUST RIGHT was written during a fairly dark period in my life. I’d just been informed the company I’d been working at for the last 15-plus years planned to let me go.

When I came up with the idea of making Goldilocks a Hollywood megastar in hiding who clashes with three hunky contractor brothers by the name of Behr, I was gainfully employed and brainstorming ideas with my friend Anne Marie at the local Starbucks. However, by the time the story was due, I was experiencing (f)unemployment for the first time in my adult life.

As I grappled with losing the job—and a part of my identity—I struggled to keep the story upbeat. But since my writer’s “voice” has always been light, bright and funny, I had to stay in character.

I write romantic comedy. Folks read my stories to be entertained, not dragged down.

So I pulled up my big girl panties, planted my too-ample butt in the chair and wrote the funny, sweet story that I’d originally imagined.  It’s packed with the light banter that readers have praised in reviews for my Love & Baseball series—banter that my editor for JUST RIGHT absolutely loved.

Just Right

Home improvement shouldn’t look this good…

America’s Sweetheart, Callista Gold, needs an escape from Hollywood—and the scandalous photos hackers leaked to the tabloids. She buys a cottage in northern Arizona, sight unseen, and heads for what she thinks will be a mountain retreat. But like her now-tainted reputation, Rosewood Cottage needs some major fixing-up. Contractor Tyler Behr—one-third of Behr Construction—is just the man for the job. Problem is Ty had other plans: buy Rosewood and flip it. He agrees to work for the frosty beauty, with thoughts of delaying the project long enough for her to get bored and go back to wherever she came from.

But Callie is no prissy miss. She jumps in to help with the renovations, perfectly at home with construction—and one particular construction worker. Sparks ignite between them with every swing of the hammer, until a photo of Ty and Callie in a compromising position creates another scandal for her and a dilemma for him. He’s never been big on sharing, not even something as simple as loaning power tools to his own brothers. How can he share the woman he loves with the movie-going public?

JUST RIGHT is part of Turquoise Morning Press’ new And They Lived Happily Ever After boxed set—six modern fairytales for one low price.

Arlene Hittle is an Indiana girl who now makes her home in northern Arizona. Just Right, her fifth book with Turquoise Morning Press, has absolutely nothing to do with her All Is Fair in Love & Baseball series—but it was a lot of fun to write. She enjoyed putting a sexy spin on one of the fairy tales she grew up reading. When she’s not writing, reading, spending time with her boyfriend or slurping down Starbucks drinks, she works as a page designer/reporter for the Daily Courier in Prescott. As most of you know, I spent the past weekend near Cincinnati, Ohio, for Lori Foster’s 11th Annual Reader Author Get Together. As usual, I had such an amazing time. It seems like it takes forever for June to roll around, and the weekend is always gone to soon.

I’m using this space today to share some of my pictures from the event.

Thanks for having me on your blog!

Tell us about your release?

Begin Again is a new adult novella starring Tyler and Chase – both sophomores in college. What’s fun about this story is the role reversal. Chase works at a strip club as a waiter and Tyler is the good girl. There is a lot of drama, some steamy sex and laughs as well. Although this is book three in the Wish Come True series, it can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone book. And at 115 pages it is a fun, quick read.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Definitely a pantser. Most of my books start out as a high level idea of what I want, then I rough sketch the ideas in Word by giving each chapter a name that reflects what I hope to achieve during the chapter. Then I’ll write one short paragraph of each character’s background. That’s about it before I start writing and just let it flow. My stories never end the way I originally anticipated. In fact, it wasn’t until Chapter 11 out of 14 in Begin Again that I figured out how I would end the story.

What was the most difficult part of the publishing process for you?

Marketing is always the most difficult part of the publishing process. It drains a lot of time that I’d prefer to spend on my writing. But someone has to do it.

How about the most fun?

The covers are always a lot of fun. I enjoy watching my story come to life on the cover.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I’ve always loved writing. But soon after reading my first romance novel in college, I knew I had to try my hand at writing one. It took me twenty years to actually put pen to paper but I finally did it. And I love it!

Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)

Not really. Other than having peace and quiet, I don’t really have any rituals. I can write any time of day and on any day of the week. But when I’m not feeling the muse I stop. I’m not one of those writers that forces myself to write every single day. Writing if fun for me. I want to keep it that way. Forcing the words would make writing into a chore.

Who is your go-to author, the one you know you can always count on to deliver a great story?

Jane Austen! LOL. Seriously. I read her books over and over. I’m a big fan of diversity. If you follow me on GoodReads, you’ll see that I read a wide variety of authors. It’s rare that I read many books from just one author – that only happens if I bought a series and loved it.

What projects are you working on at the present?

Right now I’m writing a “Billionaire Obsession” erotic romance serial under my erotic romance pen name – Vickie Valentine. The first book, Meeting the Boss, was published recently. It’s a lot of fun because the heroine is super confident and sassy. I’m also putting the finishing touches on Make Me Whole which has a release date of June 2, 2015 with Loose Id.

What do your plans for future projects include?

I’ve had several requests for a 4th book in the Wish Come True series which would include Derek Murphy (the hero’s brother from Date Night). I hadn’t planned to write it, but I might. I really enjoy writing short stories so I’m sure there will be several in the near future.
