Fire and Ice (A Sunnydale Days Novella)
Charlene had applied for a job at her home town hospital after her father died a year ago, and was glad to finally be close to her mother again. She didn’t expect that one of her first therapy clients would be her high school crush—the one she’d pushed away when rumors of his infidelity began to surface.
Time can be a great healer, but when Charlene saw Brian again, it was as if the last decade faded away and they were back in high school and everything that came between them hadn’t yet happened.
As a fireman, Brian knew to prepare for the unexpected—like helplessly watching the father of his old girlfriend die and the injury he incurred while fighting a recent fire—but nothing prepared him for seeing Charlene, his old flame, when he walked into his recent therapy session.
He should still be angry at her for believing the lies Suzi had spread about him, but instead he wants nothing more than to thaw the icy chill between them and rekindle the flames of passion.

Monday Motivation: Show up
Show up! It’s a message I know I need to hear on days like today: Monday.
Monday often gets a bad wrap. Everyone hates Monday. We’re tired, we’re demoralized. Sometimes we forget the hardest part of the battle is just showing up. Once we’re there and open ourselves up to the possibilities, we are in the game.
As I writer, I work from home. A lot of days all that is required of me to show up is to walk the short distance from my bedroom to my desk (Or some days, my living room couch). When I take shortcuts (Like staying in my pajamas.) my performance suffers.
That’s why I embrace the whole phrase. Walking through the stages is a preparation. Get up. Dress up…and show up. It’s that order that prepares us to never give up.

A Teaser from Royal Holiday
Today’s teaser comes from my newest release, Royal Holiday.
Royal Holiday Excerpt
I started to follow Isabel back to the kitchen when the bell over the door rang out, announcing another customer. “Go ahead and eat,” I called after her. “I’ll take care of the customer and be back in a few minutes.”
I turned on my heel, surprised to see Layton approaching the counter. He was dressed in a tailored suit. It was a deep navy with a white dress shirt under the jacket and a brilliant light blue tie that emphasized the color of his eyes.
“I didn’t expect to see you today.”
He closed the distance between us and pulled me into a hug. A welcomed surprise, it awakened my desire for him, even though it never crossed the boundary of a friendly greeting.
Still, it sent a warmth radiating from my center. I held him close a few seconds longer than good manners would call for, but he didn’t seem bothered. Instead, he held my gaze as he slowly slid back. “You are all I’ve been able to think about today.”
“I’ve been thinking about you too.” My cheeks warmed with the admittance.
Layton’s picked at a stray curl that had fallen from my ponytail. “I had to come thank you for the perfect cup of coffee you sent up this morning.”
“You’re welcome, but you didn’t have to drive all the way in to do that. I’m sure you’re very busy.”
“We have been this morning, but we’re on a break now. You must be dead on your feet. I’ve kept you out so late last night.”
“I’m a big girl. I made my own choices.” Conversation ceased, and I found myself mesmerized in his presence.
As the silence grew uncomfortable, Layton slid up onto one of the stools at the counter. “If I’m going to stay awake through the afternoon sessions, I’m going to need another large cup of your special blend.”
I turned toward my percolators to retrieve his order. “I’m sure they have coffee up at the lodge.”
“Not nearly as good as yours. I have another request. Rather, this one comes from your queen.”

Vincent Annuziato is Featured Author
I’m so pleased to have Vincent Annuziato on the blog today as our featured author.
Vincent Annuziato
In my twenties I pursued screen writing as a career, but never quite made it. I met my beautiful wife during this period and we decided to have a family. I had no choice, but to be responsible and put their needs ahead of mine. We now have three very happy children and a basset hound. The bug to write never quite left me, so at the ripe old age of 48, I produced my first novel, “Status The Game. ” I wrote it just to prove that I could. Status garnered excellent reviews and did very well in contests. These small successes made me think maybe I had a shot at something more.
I wrote my second novel at the age of 49, called 33 Degrees. I submitted the manuscript to Kindle Scout where I competed against other authors for a contract. 33 Degrees was selected as a Kindle Scout Winner and in doing so I achieved my 25+ year dream to become a published author! Besides writing, I love bassett hounds, fishing, soccer and powerlifting.
The Interview
Tell us about your latest release?
Serafina is based on the character from Sariah Wilson’s, “Royal Date.” When I wrote Serafina I had images of “Alice In Wonderland” and “Wizard of Oz.” I wanted her in two worlds. The palace of Monterra carries its own special magic, but I needed something special for the spry young princess. So, I built an open garden room in the middle of the palace that contained her childhood imagination. The room always acted as an escape and if you could imagine the pressures of royalty the open air room could be used as a perfect escape.
I hope readers will enjoy getting to know Serafina more intimately. She is a bit brash and needs refinement. I think this first story really sets that premise in motion.
As a note, the book is specifically designed for readers of all ages. Ladies, I hope will enjoy, reliving the moment of young, innocent love. And hopefully children will enjoy the fantasy of it all.
I joked with Sariah when I completed the book that we should be ready to sign over the movie rights to Disney.
Are you a plotter or pantser?
Undoubtedly a pantser. Part of the reason I also write across genres. Some people may find it interesting to hear that I write the first act without any plotting. Then I write the ending. Then I outline the middle to track plots, sub-plots, themes, character arcs, etc…. And then I write the rest.
What was the most difficult part of the publishing process for you?
Marketing. I work full time for the government and I am not the best social guy in the world. I think the ladies have it all over me in that department. They are very natural. For me as an example…. Invite me to a party and I want to hide behind a curtain until its over. Now if you trap me and make me talk one on one. I am all for it. Speaking in front of large groups. No problem. But I am not a very good “in between” guy and therefore trip through social media. Blah! J
How about the most fun?
I love the initial write the most when it is raw. I call it the “honeymoon period” and absolutely love it. Character development is special to me and my characters really do come to life for me.
What inspired you to write your first book?
If you read my author bio, you’ll see that I started out wanting to become a screenwriter/director in Hollywood. I had to give up my dreams to do the responsible thing and I wouldn’t trade any of it for all the success in the world, because I have a wonderful family who I cherish with all my heart. That being said, I have never been able to stop writing. I would find myself writing on pieces of paper and throwing them away, but always thinking about writing. Eventually, I couldn’t fight it anymore.
Now here’s the catch. I had to commute two hours each way to work and it was killing me. I bought a Kindle Fire from Amazon. Loaded up a couple of apps and just started writing. If you read “33 Degrees” you will find a theme centered around trains. This was an embellished from my experiences on riding them.
I also wrote most of “Status The Game” while riding the train which wound up becoming my first self-published book.
*Side note: 33 Degrees won a contract with Kindle Scout and that’s how I met Sariah.
Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)
No. No rituals. I write when time allows me and make sure to not neglect my family. Everything I do has to fit in around them.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I love exercising. My father holds the world record in the deadlift. He is age seventy and truly inspiring. We, my dad, myself and my family workout with him on Saturdays. I also love to read and walk with my wife.
What do you think makes a good story?
There are several distinct things: Conflict. Character Arcs. Believeability.
As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
President, cowboy, police officer, soccer player…. Shall I keep going? lol
What projects are you working on at the present?
I am soon to release another short story called i-human. It’s an interesting piece where I challenge the reader to figure out who is human.
And as a tease…. I firmly believe I am working on my NY Times Best Seller right now. My writing has matured and this concept is definitely a beautiful topic. It’s working title is called Snow Angels right now. A sweet love story, readers should stay in touch if they want to hear more as it develops.
What do your plans for future projects include?
I am going to write my first comedy soon. It’s been building inside of me for a while. I am also going to publish my second book in the Status series and I am considering my second in the Degrees series.

Tuesday Teaser: Serafina
Oh the perils of a first kiss! Serafina’s mission seems easy enough, especially for a young and very pretty Princess. Unfortunately, life isn’t always that easy.
I’m so pleased to be sharing one of my fellow January authors in the The Royals of Monterra Kindle World: Serafina.
Serafina
A first kiss should be a very easy thing to accomplish for a pretty, young and vibrant thirteen-year-old princess. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for Princess Serafina. One innocent and curious attempt with her lifelong friend, Nicholas, turns into one of the most humiliating experiences of her life. And to add to her misery . . . Her selfish and immature actions threaten to put a truly noble and innocent boy in jail. Problems compound problems, and ultimately, she has no one to blame but herself. Follow along as Serafina tries desperately to repair the damage she has caused. Take a mythical adventure through strange lands filled with fairies and ogres, talking insects and some pretty nasty frogs. Watch as her two worlds collide, and she is put to the test to see if she is worthy of one of the most sought after and coveted prizes in this young lady’s life—her first kiss. A story for all ages, Princess Serafina will remind those who have forgotten about and excite those who have not yet traveled down the road, that young romance is as complicated a journey as any on earth.

Royal Holiday Out Now!
I’m so proud to share Royal Holiday with all of you. This story is part of Sariah Wilson’s Royals of Monterra Kindle World. I fell in love with Sariah’s books, and devoured the series in just over a week. To be able to play is this big, colorful world was truly an honor for me.
Royal Holiday
Ronaria’s Prince Layton’s work with orphaned children has brought him to the Summit in Monterra, but it was by chance he walked into the quaint bistro in search of a treat for the kids in his care.
The bistro’s owner Georgianne Bosco doesn’t first recognize him, and her blunt honesty and warmth to his children has him longing for a way to turn this business trip into a royal holiday.
Tonight, all of the authors in this group release are partying it up on Facebook!
Come join the fun and enter to win some great prizes!

An Interview with PM Kavanaugh
I’m so happy to have PM Kavanaugh on the blog today. Before we get to the interview and the details about her brand, new release Ready or Die let’s take a peek at her bio.
PM Kavanaugh
A writer of thrillers spiked with romance, PM Kavanaugh has always loved a potent mix of intrigue, danger, and adventure. She shares her home, dreams and some of her plotting dilemmas with her clever-enough-to-be-a-spy husband and her feline office mates, Finn and Dash.
Connect with PM at her website or her Facebook.
The Interview
Tell us about your latest release?
Ready or Dead tells the story of my heroine, Anika Washington, as a new recruit in the global black ops counterterrorist agency featured in my debut novel, Die Run Hide. It’s the prequel to that novel. Perhaps more importantly to romance readers, this novella shows how Anika and Gianni, the hero and her superior at the agency, fall in love!
Are you a plotter or pantser?
I consider myself a pantser with plotter aspirations! So far, with the two books I’ve written, I’ve known how each story begins and ends. But getting from those two scenes is definitely a pantser activity.
What was the most difficult part of the publishing process for you?
Waiting! It’s so hard to be patient and steady between sending out submissions and waiting for responses from agents and publishers, especially that long-hoped-for “yes.” Fortunately, for this book, my editor at Crimson Romance was very quick to reply. I heard from her within HOURS of my query and within TWO WEEKS (not including her vacation time) with an offer to publish.
How about the most fun?
You mean, besides the “yes”??? With Ready or Dead, I loved the copy line editing phase where I got suggestions for how and where to correct some pesky grammar and punctuation snafus and a few “blips” in plot. This time, I learned that, per the Chicago Manual of Style, titles of politicians, like the president of the United States and the secretary of state, are not capitalized because they refer to the generic positions and not to individual people. I LOVE learning those kinds of grammar-nerd rules.
What inspired you to write your first book?
Since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed up mini-vignettes based on favorite TV shows and characters. No surprise that my first book, Die Run Hide, is loosely based on the TV show, La Femme Nikita, particularly a promised episode that never ran and whose title inspired the basic storyline of my book about a female agent on the run from the agency that is trying to either retrieve or kill her.
Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)
My first book, Die Run Hide, was written in the mornings at a lot of different Starbucks after I had consumed my go-to beverage–a venti-sized, decaf, non-fat, no-whip mocha. Yum! For Ready or Dead, I relocated to my upstairs living room with a wide-open view of my city, San Francisco. The timing was mid-morning, after my daily run to Starbucks and that mocha.
Who is your go-to author, the one you know you can always count on to deliver a great story?
I love, love, love JD Robb and her Eve Dallas books. Their near-future setting inspired the same for both of my books.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I like to have a lot of different activities going on in my life. As a Gemini, I need to bounce between rational-left-brain things and creative-right-brain things. Besides handling all the finances in our household, I freelance as a marketing consultant; am a volunteer with the local SPCA as a cat socializer (yes, that’s the official job position—isn’t it great?); study and play guitar. Most recently, my husband and I started volunteering in Ethiopia at two schools. We teach English to the kids and computer skills to the teachers. Like writing a book, the effort is challenging and exhilarating.
What do you think makes a good story?
The mix of action-adventure AND romance. That’s all I need.
As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
Hmmm. I didn’t have a clear picture. I knew I didn’t want to be a nurse, a teacher, a soldier, a nun—any position in uniform. Maybe because I went to Catholic school and grew up wearing a uniform? I always envisioned myself in an office or business setting. Some type of executive. That’s probably why I pursued a degree in business even though the classes I enjoyed the most were in liberal arts.
What projects are you working on at the present?
Promoting my book, Ready or Dead! Other than that, my husband and I are so wrapped up in preparing for our return trip to Ethiopia, I don’t have time for much else.
What do your plans for future projects include?
I started the sequel to Die Run Hide right after its debut a few years ago, but couldn’t get any traction with the story. Newly inspired by having successfully completed the prequel, Ready or Dead, I might just re-open that file and see if the story speaks to me now.
This or That
Breakfast or no breakfast? Breakfast which always includes a venti-sized-decaf-non-fat-no-whip mocha from Starbucks!
Eggs or pancakes? Eggs.
Pork Bacon or Turkey Bacon? Turkey Bacon
Scrambled or Over Easy Eggs? Scrambled.
White or Wheat Bread? Wheat bread.
Macaroni Salad or Potato Salad? Potato Salad.
Mashed Potatoes or Baked Potatoes? Baked Potatoes. What happened to French Fries?
Hot Dogs or Hamburgers? Hamburgers (with the French Fries from above)
Cookie Dough or Cookies from Scratch? Cookies from scratch. Chocolate chip, please!
Pumpkin Pie or Apple Pie? My Mom’s favorite dessert is apple pie so I’ll go with that. But I prefer chocolate cake.
Ice Cream or Frozen Yogurt? Ice cream, with chocolate cake OR brownies. Yum!
Taco Bell or McDonalds? McDonalds. I live in San Francisco. There’s no excuse for going to Taco Bell when you can buy great-tasting taqueria food on the cheap all around San Francisco.
Carrabba’s or Olive Garden? Olive Garden. But again, living in San Francisco, great Italian non-chain food is all around me!
Sweet or Sour? Sweet.
Sushi or Smoked Fish? Sushi.
Chicken Nuggets or Chicken Fingers? Having tried neither, I’ll go with Chicken Nuggets.
French Fries or Salad? Okay, here’s the French Fries question! Fries. Definitely.
Pringles or Lays? Lays.
Salt and Vinegar or Sour Cream and Onion? BBQ!
Coke or Pepsi? Coke.
Surge Soda or Mellow Yellow? Having tried neither, which one goes better with Chicken Nuggets?
Black Coffee or Cream and Sugar? Coffee with Cream. Hold the sugar.
Gatorade or Powerade? Powerade.
Ready or Die
Recruited into a global counterterrorism agency from a network of federally-run orphanages, Anika Washington is training hard for promotion to field agent status, which requires the successful completion of her first mission. The prospect of failure and being forced to leave the agency haunts the trainee. She can’t bear the thought of enduring yet another rejection, a painful reminder of her institutional past.
When a fellow recruit makes a rookie mistake and is killed at the start of her own first mission, Anika is ordered to step in. Now, she must prove to her superiors—including Gianni Brambillo, the enigmatic male operative who takes a special interest in her—that she is mission-ready. Or die trying.
Have you entered to win a copy of Ready or Die? Please check out the post from earlier this week for information!
