Inspiration for Broken Legacy

I am over on tony-paul's blog- A Splash of Scarlet this week. I would like to share it here as well. It has an excerpt from Broken Legacy that I haven't shared anywhere else.
My inspiration from my writing comes from history. Makes sense being a historical romance writer, but even in my epic fantasy I draw from history. Human nature hasn't changed...it never has. Greed, corruption, lust, selfishness, the thirst for power has been the undeniable forces that have led to unimaginable horrors within our history. But even at its worse throughout history there always emerges a light—a light to remind of us of humanity—a light to lead us out of the darkness.
In fiction, it's easy to come up with a happy ending. I have control. All the conflicts and injustices I have inflicted on my hero and heroine are vindicated by the end of the book if I so choose. Good versus Evil. In my world good always trumpsevil.
History fascinates me. Certain people inspire me, but it's not always the well-known heroes that have intrigued me. Heroes are ordinary people doing the extraordinary in a given situation. Not all the good that one does is immediately recognized. Some may never be recognized. But it is from these sacrifices that humanity survives.
Evil's face is not always readily perceived as the evil they are. Evil has a way of twisting and turning the facts to justify their means to an end. My daddy always told me that most people can justify their actions to themselves, excusing their behavior for the 'betterment' of others. To us looking back, we would never justify slavery. Yet at one time it was an accepted practice. Do you realize how hard it was to stand up and say that slavery needed to be stopped? In books today, heroes and heroines always do the political correct thing and oppose the practice. It's easy to look back and say we would have made a stand and demanded slavery be stopped. I would like to think I would have, but it was a different world back then. People were ostracized for standing up and demanding slavery be stopped. It's a hard thing to do to take a stand that's not popular. To have society look down on you- telling you how wrong you are-having your life or your love ones lives threatened. Even in the North, abolitionists were frowned upon and shunned. But the adage one voice can make a difference...I think it does. Eventually, the good in people surfaces.
Broken Legacy was inspired by courageous acts by people in the face of dangers. I have always said that Irena Sendler served as my inspiration for mystory. Irena Sendler was a woman truly to be admired. She defied the Nazi’s in WWII and saved thousands of children from certain death. My heroine faces the dangers of the Reign of Terror where no one was safe.

Lord Gerard Lenister needed the lady…after their meeting, he wanted her.
Intrigue, Secrets, Romance— Broken Legacy, Book Two of Secret Lives Series!

Thrown into the midst of the Reign of Terror that the French Revolution has become, Lady Eloise has long struggled with the questions arising from her birth. Forced into a marriage she neither wanted or desired, she finds herself drawn to the man who is now her husband.
Lord Gerard puts into place a plan to save his children. Marrying Lady Eloise gives him the leverage he needs. Soon, he realizes the woman he married is nothing like the woman she has been portrayed. Never did he consider she would risk her life for him nor did he consider that Eloise would evoke feelings within him he did not know existed.
Thrown into a terror few escape, Gerard and Eloise discover a connection that will bind their lives forever—love. That is if they survive.

Excerpt:
"I warned you, my lord. I tried to tell you that I was not the wife for you," she retorted. A lump rose in her throat. "Andre explained to me why he told you everything. He believed it to be the best course of action at this point. But I did not tell him that this is what you wanted to know. What you asked me the night before we wed. I will not defend myself. Never will I do so.       "I did not ask for you to defend yourself, madame." Lenister's voice was dangerously calm. "Did I not say it matter only if it interfered with my mission? Do you not suppose this will?"       "Non, it will serve you. Andre does not believe the one who betrayed us knows who I am. If they had, they would not have needed to raid a cottage. They would have gone to my uncle's. I have been thinking about it. I believe it would be best if I travel with you into Paris as your wife. My name...my story would have preceded me. It should serve you well, my lord."      "All the while they search for the White Rose." He released her. From his tone, he implied he had heard much. "You are willing to walk into the hornet's nest for my bastard children. Why, Eloise, why?"       "What do you know of me?" she demanded. She had to know. He had to say the words for she could not.       "I know about your daughter. I need to know the rest." His expression became solemn.       For a moment, Eloise had no answer. His words were as a dagger that struck the core of her heart, a never-ending ache that only dulled over time. No words could relate her grief or the guilt that weighed uponher about her baby. She studied her husband, trying to deduce whether he hated her now he knew about herchild, but she could not read his eyes. She decided she had only one recourse. She answered him honestly.       "If you insist...if you know about my child, then, too, you must know about Luc. A part of me died the night Luc died and my baby was taken from me. I lost all I had clung to in my life. I had gone to Luc for protection against the Marquis de Mortiere and Calognac, both cruel men, my lord—crueler than you can even imagine. You wonder how I could hold to the belief that all men should be equal. It was in that moment when I saw the injustice that status and wealth inflicted upon those they consider beneath themselves.      "Luc did not hesitate to give me his protection to me when I was in need. In turn, he lost his life." She paused, collecting her thoughts...struggling to find the right words. She said discernibly, "But Luc would never have wanted any of what has occurred. He was going to take me...us...away. We were going to go to America. His father died in their cause of independence. So you see, I never wanted any of this. I never wanted money or a title. I wanted only to love and be loved in return..." Her voice faded. She turned her head from her husband, and then went on. "It does not matter. It was not to be, but I could not live knowing what had happened and I was responsible for my daughter. I had to...needed to help. My life matters little to me..."      Lenister grasped hold of her and whirled her around to him, his body taut with anger. "Matters little to you! What of me? How dare you think it means nothing to me!"      Silence ensued. The thought had never occurred to her...that he would want her. Knowing what he knew about her, she thought he would hate her. Her eyes widened in disbelief.      "Since we parted, I have thought of nothing but you!" He looked at her hard. His voice took on a dangerous tone of a fierce anger underlying a brewing emotion. "I clung to the memory of you lying beside me, loving me. I had dreams that you were safe at Ashwin Manor. If I was not successful in my mission, I thought...I hoped you would be happy. That thought gave me peace! Now, I find you here!"      He gave her no time to respond. His mouth came down hard on hers, kissing her until her legs weakened.      "No, no, no," she pleaded, pushing back against his chest. "Do not do this to me."      "Do what, my lady? Love you as I desire?" He stared at her with his thoughts deepening in the depths of her eyes.      "Tell me that you want me," she breathed against his lips, but she did have a need for him. As much as she wanted to deny the feelings he invoked within her, she wanted him. How could she? Yet her body cried for him. "I'm afraid..."      "I told you I do not want you to be afraid of me," he whispered.      "Oh, but I am afraid, my lord...I'm afraid of you," she confessed in a small voice, surprising herself. "I can't do this..."       "You can," he said huskily, leaning down against her lips, and then he kissed her. "You are a strange one, Eloise, but if you think for one moment I'm releasing you...that I'm letting you go...you are sadly mistaken."       "But..." She was so confused! Despite everything, she was drawn to this man and had been from the moment their eyes met. "You are telling me after all you have learned about me...that I'm not who you thought...yes, yes, I can try to help you save your children, but I'm a fraud. I was never Lady Eloise Granville. I'm nothing more than a common bastard..."      Lenister moved her chin upward gently, coaxing her to look at him. "There is nothing common about you, Lady Lenister. You are my lady..." He kissed her again. "Always my lady."

Book Signing—Saturday, April 27

If you are going to be in the Boston area on Saturday, April 27, join me for my first book signing! I won't be alone...Julia Quinn, Caroline Linden, Donna Alward, Hannah Howell, Marie Force...are only a few that are attending.
I will be signing Seductive Secrets and Broken Legacy. Excited! This is the first time I'm doing a book signing. I've given away signed books, but I've always been too shy to do a book signing on my own. I have greatly enjoyed attending these romance conferences. I thought this would be a great way to start getting out and meeting readers instead of meeting readers only behind my  computer.
So if you are around, please join me. Would love the support! Click here for the whole list of authors and who will benefit from the book signings.

Goodreads, Reviews and Bargains

Amazon bought Goodreads. What do you think? I'm not sure. I'm taking a wait and see attitude. I like the premise of Goodreads. I like interacting with readers and other authors, but honestly I didn't give it much thought until I read an article on Publisher Weekly. I confess I don't update on Goodreads page like I should. I mean I only just set up Colleen Connally's account. I think that's what I have to do for my pen name...not even sure. I'm there under Jerri Hines, but I know I don't use it to its full potential. One thing I do enjoy is being able to talk easily to readers. I hope that doesn't change.

I also wanted to mention readers reviews. To everyone that has taken the time to write a review after reading one of my books—thank you. I have been told that a review is left on average of 1:1000 downloads. I personally think the number is even higher. So for everyone that has left a review I just want you to know I appreciate it. And I encourage everyone to leave a review for a book you enjoy. The author will be deeply appreciative. I wanted to share another reader's review one from Broken Legacy and the other from Seductive Secrets.

Broken Legacy Reader Reviews:   Amazon

Simply mesmerizing..., March 31, 2013 by Jackie
This review is from: Broken Legacy (Secret Lives Series) (Kindle Edition)  Colleen Connally has a gift for weaving love stories filled with conspiracy, sacrifice, deceit, loyalty, hardships and least of all love. I am completely enthralled with her work. Eloise' s character in this story has experienced so much hardship and difficulties I am humbled with the ease the author was able to make me feel and see the heroines live. Colleen has the ability to transport you in time and place you within the story. The way the characters are introduced and how their relationship begins was brilliant. Eloise's story was heart breaking. Colleen was able to again merge different worlds from different social standards and had a great supporting cast that enriched the plot of the story full of betrayal and conceit.

Making the reader connect with the protagonists is difficult but Colleen has the ability to make you see through theirs eyes and feels what they felt. I felt pain for Eloise with all her predicament and admired her strong will and courage. This is the first novel I have read where the heroine is so powerful in characters yet her endurance was not over bearing on the hero, Gerald. I would have given the story a 5 star but I think the author was a little redundant after a while and the end of the story (epilogue) could have been a bit more heart felt. I don't want to spoil the ending but if you call yourself a friend and your live is saved wouldn't you do all in your power to reciprocate especially to remedy a terrible wrong once you were on free territory. I felt the author did not redeem Giselle very well and some of the other characters. Overall, the story was mesmerizing with a heart felt plot and magnificent work!

ENTERTAINMENT SERIES—Television, Movies and Books!

It's almost April which means lots of things. The end of the TV season will be upon us soon...lots of cliffhangers to look forward to this coming May. Some TV series are only just beginning, like The Voice! I'm a huge fan of The Voice. Don't really know why except I have to watch it. I'm looking forward to tonight with Shakira and Usher! I think I like it so much because they're so encouraging toward the singers. I used to watch American Idol. Haven't watched it in years. Have never seen the first episode of the X-Factor. Never did enjoy the cuts with the singers that couldn't carry a note.  It's not fun to me. I felt bad for them. We all love to sing and we all have our dreams. I know that we all aren't professional singers like Adele, but I don't feel that a TV show should capitalize on the misfortune ones for whatever the reason show enough courage to reach out for their dreams and fall short. I don't care for those that choose to make fun of others to make themselves feel better. Instead, I like the fact that all the singers on The Voice can sing and are given a chance to follow their path. I also enjoy getting a glimpse of the judges' personalities.

I confess I like some reality TV...I have never watched the Kardashians, Housewives of anywhere, Jersey Shore... I like the The Amazing Race, Survivor, and if the truth be known, I occasionally catch an episode of Celebrity Apprentice. I don't watch all the time, but I keep up with them. My husband's hooked now on the new cop show on TNT, Boston's Finest.

I have made a discovery. I can become obsessed with series on Netflix...you have all the episodes at your fingertip. I couldn't stop watching Merlin the Series until I finished the last episode that Netflix had in stock. Not happy that we can't get the series over here in the US because I know there's a whole season I haven't seen yet. I have to wait and I'm not a patient person. Netflix is where I first watched one of my favorite series— Downton Abbey ! Love that series! At least its on PBS and only have to wait six months to watch it...although I have to say that last season I was let down when I discovered on a spoiler that Matthew died! Oh...I should have never done that.

But series can be addictive. Am I right? Take Game of Thrones, the Walking Dead, Homeland ...I also like Revenge, Once Upon a Time and Grimm. I'm still debating Revolution. I want to see where it goes...kinda forgotten about it after it has been off for so long.

Series catches our attention. When we enjoy a series, it draws us back. Take The Hunger Games ...last year brought the first movie of the Suzanne Collins' book series. Now we're looking forward to the next...
Back last year, I will admit I went to The Hobbit solely because I'm a avid fan of Lord of the Rings. I knew that making three movies out of one book would drag a tad, but I enjoyed it anyway. I love books by Nicholas Sparks so I'm looking forward to seeing  Safe Haven.

BROKEN LEGACYIsn't that what we do? Look forward to something we enjoyed in the past in hopes of enjoying a similar experience with their next movie or book.
SEDUCTIVE SECRETSWhen I write a series, I write with the next book in mind, except for Secret Lives Series. My other series, Winds of Betrayal, Whispers of a Legend, or Tides of Charleston, you really need to read the first one to fully enjoy the book. Not with Secret Lives Series, this series is a series of stand alone books with a theme that ties them together—the heroine is living a life of deceit in some manner. In Seductive Secrets, Alyce is living under an assumed name because of her father is thought to have been a traitor to the Crown; in Broken Legacy, Eloise's legitimacy is in question. In the next book, Seductive Lies, my heroine makes the decision herself to live a life not her own after a being betrayed by the one she loves.  But it's my hope that in all my series, you will find yourself waiting for the next one!

What do you think of series? Like them? Can't wait for the next one? Let me know. Love to hear from you!

Have a good one! Keep reading!

The Truth Behind The Fantasy

I write Romance. I write what I feel and Romance is what I feel. More than likely, the Winds of Betrayal series would be considered Historical Fiction, but on the whole Romance is the driving force behind my books.
I was reading an article on the internet that someone said that romance novels are bad for your health. I disagree. On the contrary, I believe it is just the opposite.
While I'll concede that romance novels are fantasy, the love behind the books isn't a fantasy. Sometimes we need an escape for a few hours into a different world than the one we live in. Not that there is anything wrong with the world we live, but sometimes its nice to be reminded about the love we share with our better half or that there is someone out there for us. In the midst of  all the appointments, grocery stores, laundry, rushing the kids from one activity to the other, the phone calls, bills...we live on a merry-go-round.
When you pick up a romance novel, there is one certainty before you even turn the first page—there will be a happy ending.  It's the Golden Rule in romance. I myself love a happy ending. It's what we all strive for in our lives.
I believe in love at first sight. I believe that there is a love that completes me. I believe in that happy ending. In reality, maybe our better half isn't 6' 5'', a body to kill for and eyes to get lost in with one glance. But to us, they are perfect. In reality, we have every day chores that have to be addressed. Perhaps that is more of a fantasy in the romance novels...that our characters don't have to take the trash out, go to the grocery store, or stay up late waiting on your teenager to come home. But the love...love isn't a fantasy.
In my romances, there is always something within them that is the substance of the story. I'll take my book, Seductive Secrets, as an example. It's a true romance complete with the happy ending, but I did something in the tale that was a tad different. My main secondary character is gay. Having a gay character in a book isn't life shattering, but I put him in a traditional historical romance novel. I had a purpose behind doing so.

get-attachment (15)
I have someone close to me that is gay. In a conversation, this person expressed to me growing up they didn't have anyone to connect with that was gay. They grew up feeling that something was wrong with them. There was no one to look up to and the gays that they were exposed to in the public eye were ridiculed. I can't do much, but I could write a gay character in a positive light. I believe in Seductive Secrets Charles comes across as a respected member of society.  It was my intent.
Seductive Secrets has had many ups and downs. It has changed titles and pen names. I even decided to simply give it away. It has always done well free, but yesterday it skyrocketed back up the rankings. I'm happy to say that it's ranked as #3 overall in Amazon free rankings; #1 Historical Romance and #1 Romantic suspense.  Simply thank you. Even if it is free, I appreciate that readers enjoy my book.
brokenlegacy AMAZON US       AMAZON UK    BARNES AND NOBLE
Following up Seductive Secrets, I released Broken Legacy last month. Again, this book was inspired. Broken Legacy was a hard book to write because of the subject matter—the French Revolution. In Broken Legacy, my heroine is truly a hero. She overcomes many obstacles and places her life in danger to save others. Fantasy? Perhaps but I want to acknowledge Eloise was inspired by a true life hero, Irena Sendler. Although Ms Sendler may have lived in a different time and place, she exhibited true courage. So yes...my romance novels are a fantasy. But behind every fantasy there is inspiration, purpose and...a happy ending.

THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING

Am I seriously supposed to know what I'm doing? There have been several times in my life I have felt like this. Starting a new job. Getting married. Having children. Then after I took the plunge into a new experience, I figured out that it all works out in the end.Hasn't been that way in my writing career. I thought the hardest part would be writing the book. It hasn't been. The hardest part is the business end of everything. I'll let you in on a little secret. I'm not a business person. Never have been...never will be. My heart rules me.My major in college was in sciences. My love was writing and reading. Accounting and bookkeeping...not so much. So it goes with Indie publishing. This has been a learning experience. On one hand I love the control I have with Indie publishing; on the other I want to scream to have a publisher. Why? Because all I want to do is write. There is so much I really don't want to deal with that pulls my time away from my writing. But in the scheme of things, it's part of the business so I don't have a choice. I have to readjust my way of thinking. The way you approach a task does affect the outcome.
There is power in thinking positively.

The Power of Positive Thinking
I admire Oprah Winfrey. I do. Usually I talk about my books or someone or something that inspired me in history. I don't usually write contemporary. I have an old soul, but Oprah Winfrey inspires me. It’s pretty simple really. She’s gives back.
Oprah Winfrey is the epitome of positive thinking. I need that. Everyone needs to think positively. But in real life it’s easy to say, a lot harder to do. That’s why Oraph Winfrey is inspiring. I’m not an expert on Oprah’s life story, but I do know this — the path she walked wasn’t easy. She overcame adversity and obstacles that most of us wouldn’t even understand.I miss her show. I always enjoyed that part of the day. Oprah has that way about her that she could be your neighbor sitting down for a chat over coffee. What I miss most is listening to her talk. Do you? I miss her voice. It had a calming, soothing tone to it that allowed me to accept what she was saying whether I agreed with her or not. To be honest, if I didn’t agree with her to start with, I usually did by the end.I believe she was the first one to make me see the world around me a little differently. Oprah is from Mississippi. So am I. I love my home. I hold fond memories. I love the people, the countryside, the food… Oprah, though, grew up a tad different than I did. She grew up with a different perceptive. Yet, even though her hardships, she survived and thrived. I believe it was because of the way she looked at life.
I pulled Oprah up on the web the other day and found this.

-To Practice any art, no matter how well or how badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it-  Kurt Vonnegut

When you're an Indie writer, it's hard at times to expose yourself to the public. Sometimes its hard to stay positive. In reality for me, being an Indie is kinda like being stranded on a deserted island not knowing what is going on in the outside world. In the world of publishing, I am stranded on a deserted island. I'm not a member of a writer's group. I work too many hours and nothing is close by me. I have friends that serve as my beta readers. I hire an editor and she seems to like my books well enough. But when I release a book, I feel like I'm going in it blind. Will they or won't they like my book?
When my children were growing up, I always told them to do their best and don't look back. It's all I could ask is for is their best. Now that is what I give to my writing. So I waited to hear what readers thought about Broken Legacy. I'm going to share a couple of the reviews.
I also want to add a thank you to the readers that take the time to write a review. Reviews are so important to an Indie author. Thank you.
Amazon reviews
Jenel MesserFormat:Kindle EditionThis novel was so enthralling, it captivates me the moment I started reading the book. The characters/plot was expertly crafted. The scandal, politics, greed of power, and a steamy romance was lusciously erotic, and proved to be a lethal combination of the story. If you're a fan of Johanna Lindsey or Virginia Henley.......you would want to read this book.

The protagonist was a courageous woman who was used by her families as pawn in the middle of French Revolution. And yet, was able to smuggle food, and people. She was well-known as "White Rose" to her network to helped for those in needs, to escape madame guillotine.

Lady Eloise Granville has lost hope, and giving up everything when the people she loved has perished. With the aid of the Earl of Lenister a flicker of trust unfold, and hoping for a promising future. The question is......if their love survive at the end.

I'm a particular fan of this authors brand of historical romance. The landscapes are vibrant and beautifully written. I can visualize the settings and want to visit them. I am drawn to the characters. I feel empathy for their plight. I enjoy particularly the strong female leading lady in this book. I would recommend this to anyone who loves being taken back in time and treated to a love story that has depth. This story wraps you up in interesting people and places. I couldn't ask for more.

I am drawn to the characters. I feel empathy for their plight. I enjoy particularly the strong female leading lady in this book. I would recommend this to anyone who loves being taken back in time and treated to a love story that has depth. This story wraps you up in interesting people and places. I couldn't ask for more.
