Yesterday, IN REAL LIFE, I signed copies of FRIENDS LIKE THESE, fell in love (look at my face) with brilliant fellow author @julietgrames, heard some of my favorite readers laugh, saw their beautiful (masked) faces, got to see one of my most beloved booksellers and met some incredible librarians—things I have not done since before the pandemic began. That I never got to do with A GOOD MARRIAGE.

And IT WAS GLORIOUS.

First, she lets me stage a murder at her glorious weekend house, then she drops this tearjerker of a post on my launch day. With FRIENDS LIKE THESE who needs anything else? And I remember that day in that diner when we were 18 like it was yesterday—and I kept thinking through my cigarette smoke: why the fuck is this girl so shiny and bright? And so many other things too it would turn out—smart and delightfully weird and wickedly funny. But that light of hers, it’s gotten me through some dark times. Love you @ccragan. My upstate house inspired the setting for “Friends Like These” (released today!) and our college years at Vassar inspired the story 😳. I’m not sure “proud” is the right word (it’s a murder mystery), but it’s close. @kimberlymccreight has been one of my best friends for 30 years. We met before freshman year at a diner in CT. We were 18, she was drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, talking about “men” with a mountain of blond hair piled on her head while I nursed my Diet Coke feeling overwhelmed and enchanted, not realizing that we’d be be friends forever, soul sisters, navigating the ups and downs of life together (with @lelenaeva and @meganmcrane too).
